Who Am I?
We all know people who identify with their political party affiliation. We all know people who identify with the foods they choose to eat or not eat. People who identify with their personalities, their occupations, their social statues, their financial situation. And yet we have seen these things change in and for people, and these people themselves have not subsequently disappeared off of the face of the Earth. While we can identify with anything we choose, that does not mean that with which we identify is who we really are. For your whole life, you have always felt like YOU, despite the state of external people and events. Many people identify with their physical bodies. But of course, we are not our bodies, we have bodies and our bodies are our own. If I interact with someone who has had a limb amputated, I am not interacting with only 90% of a person. You have a foot, but you are not a foot. Many more people identify with their minds- their thoughts, memories,.emotions, or intellect. But of course our minds are objects of our perception, which means they can't be what is doing the perceiving. You have a mind, but you are not your mind. Who we really are is beyond mind, body, and attributes. One word that fits well is Light. Light, as a word to identify with, seems to satisfy people identify as spiritual, people that Identify as religious, and people who identify as scientific as a kind of common denominator. Light is not created or destroyed. Light is not good or bad. Light is free of value and judgment. Light is eternal. Light travels at a constant speed, and yet is in all places at once. Light can be perceived as a spectrum. Light can act like particles and like waves. Light is neither substance nor absence, but illuminates both. In this sense, Light is soul, Light is Spirit, and Light is star-stuff. Light is who we really are deep down. Everything else is just a story we tell ourselves about the past and sometimes the future. That story is no more real than anything else we can come up with in our head. It is a dream. You have been dreaming. And when you are completely ready to wake up, you will.

I am surrounded by the sounds of heaven
I am surrounded by the sounds of heaven, a blanket woven from rubbing two things together. I feel the cradle. I feel its scruff. It's really fucking entertaining, actually, So much so that I am SO invested in these characters in this plot In the way that I dream that my actions and my words can change things Or slow them down. I'll do the advertizing, I've drunk the kool-aid. Highway, crickets, buzzing lights, I am surrounded by the sounds of Heaven.

You don’t have to feel guilty anymore
There are two major misconceptions about guilt in Western culture that are kept alive by major social, religious, and government institutions as well as the mental health field.
The first is that guilt has something to do with what we did or didn’t do/say, so that if we feel bad it is because we deserve to feel bad.
The second is that guilt motivates positive behavior change/will prevent the behavior from occurring again.

The last time I was able to travel, I was in an American airport on a layover on my way home from overseas. I headed to the bar and found that there was only one other person sitting there, an executive-looking woman in a business suit with her head in his hands. I couldn’t help myself- I sat down right next to her and asked her what was wrong.
“I feel so guilty,” she replied.
“What’d you do?” I asked, smirking. She looked up at me.
“I was waiting for my flight home. It was a full flight, and there were a lot of people on standby. I was waiting to board first class when I overheard someone at the agent counter by the door pleading with the person behind the counter to let him board the plane. He was saying that his wife was in labor with his first child and that he needed to get home to be there for when the baby is born. I was sitting there, imagining what it would be like to not be able to get home in that situation. My wife is 8 months pregnant with our second. I couldn’t take it after a little while, and I went up to this guy and offered him my ticket.”
“You gave someone your first class ticket home so that he could make it back in time for his kid to be born? Wow. I think that’s the nicest thing I’ve ever heard about anyone doing in an airport.” I paused.
“Wait,” I said. “But then why do you feel guilty?”
She said, “because as the place was leaving the gate I called my wife to tell her that I’d be home tomorrow instead of today. She said, ‘you idiot! I’m in labor!’“ Her head dropped back down into her hands.

Now if we had the ability to decide who should feel guilty and who shouldn’t, this woman would not be on our short list for guilt. She acted compassionately to help another, and it turned out to have an unfortunate twist; Her kindness didn’t necessarily work out in her favor completely. And yet she felt immense guilt.

I was returning home from Nepal, where I’ve been lucky enough to do some work against child sex trafficking. While I was there I met an ex-trafficker, which I think is rare.
I decided to ask him why he stopped taking and selling children to foreigners.
He replied, “it really just wasn’t that lucrative anymore. Not worth the risk.”
That answer made me regret asking. I still feel like I’d like to take a shower every time I think about it.
How much guilt do you think the ex-trafficker feels?
0. None.

If guilt had something to do with what we did or didn’t do/say, these two would be switched. Alas, people who do things we’d actually deem worthy of guilt rarely feel any guilt at all, whereas people who have positive intentions often feel it like a 1000 lbs. weight.
People don’t get what they deserve, they get what they get. Which means the concept deserving has no influence on our lives whatsoever.

We know that right now there is someone opening a bottle of whiskey because they feel guilty about the case of beer they drank the night before, and someone ordering a 2nd pizza because they feel guilty about the ice cream they binged on earlier in the day. And of course, our prison system works to make people feel guilty for their actions, which is one reason why prison recidivism rates are so high.
So guilt doesn’t have anything to do with what we did or didn’t do/say (the concept of deserving is nonsense) and it doesn’t motivate positive behavior change (it actually tends to lead to more of the same).
I haven’t been able to find a value or point to guilt, other than to make us feel bad and make things worse. It is simply a misread of information by the brain.
Which means we don’t have to feel it. And being ok with not feeling guilty is the first step doing being free of it.

Not getting what you deserve
One child is born into wealth and ease, another child to poverty and strife a half of a world away.
Which one got what they deserved? Which was fair?
Who decides that?
If there is something or someone deciding that for all of us, they have been doing a terrible job.
Good and bad things happen to mean and nice people.
Which means no one gets what they deserve or what's fair, rather they get what they get.
Unless we are too small and simple to understand the system. Which means deserving and fairness are not applicable concepts for understanding, predicting, and lamenting the fate of humans.
Deserving and fairness are make-believe concepts. Treating them as real clouds clear thinking.
Acceptance of what is actually happening isn't necessary. Curious observation and investigation of what is actually happening can be useful.

People get what they get. We were all taught that good things happen to good boys and girls before we had the opportunity to think critically about the accuracy of that statement. To learn is to automate.
The brain is an automating machine.
Automation occurs as a direct result of conscious- even if unintentional- rehearsal and repetition.
Sufficiently hostile circumstances necessitate hyper-conscious rehearsal, implementation, and repetition of defensive/protective reactions from a child.
This, in effect, automates these reactions.
The child is protecting themselves emotionally without any degree of awareness of the lasting effect that this conscious repetition would have.
Outside of these hostile circumstances, these adaptive programs (automated reactions) are not relevant or useful.
Thus one's behavior and/or mental activity is perceived as harmful at worst and extremely frustrating at best, by themselves and others.
These automated reactions must be deprogrammed in order to experience the full benefit of metaprogramming.
This deprogramming is best achieved through a combination of RRT and IFS.
Once the 'debris' of the past has been neutralized, a new foundation can be firmly established.
Metaprogramming is best achieved through cognitive rehearsal.

Meanings have words makes more sense than words have meanings. The mean- the average, the essence, the signifier, the gist, the distilled, that which is representative of..... Meaning is the result of the mind contextualizing experience. This process happens separately of experience, but is a part of experience. So while experience is real, meaning is malleable. It is what we attach to experience. We've merely automated the meaning-attachment process. Getting it off autopilot is easy only when you see that it's on autopilot.
