MEETING THE NEGLECTED BODY
Neglect is the trauma of not sufficiently experiencing something that we need.
- our body not experiencing sufficient touch, regulation, warmth, physiological safety
- our emotional body not experiencing enough emotional attunement, regulation, safety, vulnerability, connection, trust, intimacy
- our Self not experiencing enough acceptance, safety to express authentically
What is the impact of emotional neglect on our body? Our body not recognizing or not being responsive to what was missing: physiological and emotional safety, vulnerability, support, love, intimacy, trust.
Because it doesn't recognize them, our nervous system will respond in survival ways to these experiences: freeze, defend, disconnect, shut down, rationalize.
Ways to explore:
1. GIVE IT TIME. Healing neglect takes time, as we're starting life from scratch and teaching our body something it might have never experienced.
2. REPETITIVE EMBODIED EXPERIENCES. An important part of healing neglect is to stimulate parts of the body that have been dormant for so long. Our body needs to experience something consistently to activate dormant pathways.
PRACTICE: Touch your body as though you have never touched it before. The experience might feel strange and you might wanna escape it. At first, you might feel the disconnect. But keep touching and engaging the body.
3. LETTING THE BODY GRIEVE. Emotional neglect, often subtle and insidious leaves the body yearning for experiences it might have never fully experienced.
There's a lot of life that our body is forced to suppress because of neglect. Hence, a lot of loss for what was not experienced.
More insights, frameworks and tools on healing trauma and the nervous system, in the book Embodied Healing. Grab your copy via the link in the bio.
Love,
Ally

Denying the body is denying humanity. When on the healing path embodiment is key.
Our bodies are a gateway to loving connections with others, community, ecosystems, the world and ultimately, metaphysically the universe.

“Perhaps real wisdom lies in not seeking answers at all. Any answer we find will not be true for long. An answer is a place where we can fall asleep as life moves past us to its next question. After all these years I have begun to wonder if the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company.” -Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen | photo: @mollyboha | There is so much about trauma that cannot be answered or explained or rationalized away from the pain and the injustice of the experience. Finding environments and people with whom we can feel connected while navigating through the space of infinite questions, may enhance our capacity to be more safely with the not knowing. Perhaps there is some freedom, however slight, in that which is unanswerable, which is moving, which is unbound by time and space and cognition, and which is transforming both within and around us at all times. Friends, healers, family, mentors and guides, animals and nature, and practices that nurture us at our core, can accompany and contain this process of inquiry into being with what is. #survivor #trauma #overwhelm #sexualtrauma #embodiedjustice #embodiedhealing #heaingisnonlinear https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw9707rgpXJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rujwkw00e81i

Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives. 💚 - Bessel van der Kolk Reposted from @the.embodiedtherapist 💭Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives. @bessel_van Safety with self, with others, and within the context of the larger world in general is greatly impacted with repeated exposures to trauma. Reconnecting to self to regain safety and with others to attach and trust is a journey. It’s a process that may take time. Nourishing Strategies
What are your personal strategies for finding nourishment? Not just physical nourishment, although food and water are certainly elements to be considered and reviewed today. What is your strategy for finding emotional and spiritual nourishment? Spiritual starvation, as well as spiritual toxicity, are both real. Both deserve your attention today. What are you taking into your body, mind, and soul, that feed you? What do you ingest, read, experience, that helps you see yourself at your best? That washes you in refreshing hope? And what are the things that poison you? What are you ready to set down? What only gives you pain?

‘When you shut down emotion, you’re also affecting your immune system, your nervous system. So the repression of emotions, which is a survival strategy, then becomes a source of physiological illness later on.’ - Gabor Maté

One week until our course on trauma-informed yoga and meditation for survivors launches! I’m reviewing videos today and really moved by the ways in which our network of practitioners shared about their experiences not only working with survivors but also navigating their own healing through a variety of practices. This little clip is from my welcome video. I thought it was important to name my own experience engaging with these yoga and meditation, the vulnerabilities and the opportunities that somatic approaches to healing revealed. We are registering new participants every day now and would love for you to join us. Also, many of you asked so I wanted to share that yoga teachers affiliated with the Yoga Alliance will also receive 16 noncontact CEs for participating in the course. Stay tuned for more videos in our Instastories! A somatic check-in is a tool I will be introducing in our follow-up resource to our Guide to Survival Mode Plans, Identifying and Coping with the Emotional Triggers of Parenting. Thank you @the.embodiedtherapist for sharing this ❤️ Posted @withregram • @the.embodiedtherapist 💭Somatic check-ins can help us start to orient to our bodies with intention. 👉We often disconnect from our body when we experience high levels of stress and trauma. 👉Reconnection to the body can feel scary at first. 👉Slowly cultivating an awareness to your body sensations after long periods of dissociation is embodied healing. ⬇️ Let us know some go to somatic check-ins you have learned and have helped you reconnect to the body again? — #body #embodiment #embodied #embodiedhealing #healingjourney #ptsd #cptsd #cptsdawareness #neurobiologyoftrauma #trauma #traumahealing #partswork #dissociation #anxiety #depression #posttraumaticgrowth #resilience #selfcare #hope #growth #therapy #traumabonding #traumatherapy #traumainformed #somatics #coregulation #corebeliefs #neuroscience https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZljGIHAM4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Making Requests
Self-exploration has been working in your best interests lately. It helps you review your impulses and identities in a way that puts you in a position to ask for what you really want. This also serves you spiritually- when we know and advocate for our desires, we grow deeply connected to ourselves. Make sure to check in with your requests - ask yourself a few questions: Is this really what I want? Is it a fair thing to request of the person I'm asking? Will it nurture me, feed my soul? Is it a good time to ask for it, or would it be more strategic to wait?
