Being part of the rebellion meant there was often items difficult to get ahold of. (Dad!Maul and tomato 🍅 baby drabble)
Almost immediately did Aster grimace at the thought of rations.
They kept on going, made sure your belly wasn’t empty but…
Her little sister Danica immediately chucked her portion away from her. The small girl demanded Nyduck, or shrimp or something else than that terrible thing.
Starlight tried their best to explain that was what they had now. They still had plenty of stock from the plentiful gardens from the Fortress.
But…
Danica and Aster were half Zabrak, carnivorous in nature, they needed some other protein.
Maul was somewhere else looking through the stores in hopes of some sort of preserved nyduck, maybe a bit of jerky? Something for his girls was they adjusted to this new life.
“But I want shrimp! Or Bantha!”
Chopper Base had little game for them to hunt.
Aster stayed quiet and tried to stomach the ration bar.
How had Maul adjusted himself to such foods? When he was fully Zabrak?
Aster knows her father did not adjust himself to such things. He survived. He just did. It made her head hurt to think of having to stomach such things for years…
—-
“Here my little darling.” Maul has scrounged up some jerky at the least. Danicas eyes widening and her little tongue licking her lips.
“Maul,” Starlight sighed , exasperation in their voice. “You know we have to help them get accustomed to…”
It pained them every much as it did Maul, not being able to readily provide food to the girls.
“Not today. “ the crimson zabrak said. He handed a piece to Aster and then to Dani. The small girl immediately trying to eat it quickly only to be scolded.
“Dani that’s the only bit you’ll get!”
“Danica Oppress.”
“There’s no more.”
It seemed to wash over her at the moment the reality. The lives they once knew were altered.
Danica munched slowly on her jerky, hot tears spilling over her rounded cheeks.
Her tummy growled. She whimpered and Maul hugged her close. Promises of more whispered.
Aster got up and left. Starlight and Maul calling after her…
——
The delicate balance of her home was resurfacing. It wouldn’t be long before Maul went off somewhere in hopes to ensure better for the family…or convince himself of an old enemy he could pin this on.
Her buir would try and remain strong. Ignoring themselves to keep Danica content and Aster from trying to delve too deep into their sorrow.
Aster would….
“Hey…”
It was Ezra. The familar blue hair would never be lost in the crowd.
Her hearts beat a bit faster, “ You’re worried.”
She at times she joyed and greatly disliked their bond. “ Danica’s hungry.” Aster muttered.
The young Jedi quickly looked about, “ I can definitely get you all some more ration bars! It be no trouble.”
The girl shook her head, “ We have plenty. It’s different for us. We need more protein and the packs don’t have what is needed.”
Ezra frowned, “ Will she be okay?”
Aster shrugged, “ Given how my family is my father will scour all the base for more. Stars knows he’d do anything for her.”
“For you both.” Ezra reminds her, “ You know he may be the bane of my existence but he’d do anything for you and Dani and your Buir….the Mandos! Oh have you checked with Rau? I bet he’s got to have something!”
Aster once more felt her hearts race, “ The man loathes me.”
Ezra shrugged, “ I think he feels like that for everyone, but you know he’s got a soft spot for lil Dani! “
The other day the youngest Oppress was following about the leader of the Protectors with her pet massiffs at her sides and millions of questions.
Fenn Rau made the mistake of indulging her questions. A whole day used to answer questions! But….Ezra was right. Danica had that gift, many of those at the base had a fondness for the child.
“She’s what they are fighting for when think about it. So she doesn’t grow up like us.”
Hiding. On the run. Keeping away from suspicion.
Aster sighed, “ Thank you,” a smile on her lips. “ You are quite wise Ezra.”
“Please tell that to Kanan,”
—-
“Miss Oppress you know quite well I have barred you from.” The older Mandalorian warned as Aster and Ezra approached the Protectors area of the base.
“Do you have any preserved meats or any similar proteins?” Aster immediately asked.
“First you barge in for trainings, then challenge a head ranking officer and…”
“It’s for my little sister, we don’t have any and our kind require…”
“Oh no is something wrong with little Dani?” A helmeted protector overhears.
Aster gives a glance to Ezra who nods, remember she’s what they were fighting for.
“Even as half zabraks our diet requires more protein. Sadly we can’t acquire it with the rations supplied. There’s little to hunt.”
Rau contemplates the information. “Your father has gotten along fine with the rations…”
Aster knew Rau would delve into such a question, “ My father has a penchant for doing what it takes to survive, it has not been kind to him. Such a thing would likely be damaging to someone as young as Danica.”
Too small. Too little. She felt the gnaw of hunger in her own stomach.
Before she realized it there was tins and sealed packages in her arms.
Aster half listening half shocked at the amount as one protector was rattling off how to make it last longer, what recipes to try and something about a bone broth.
“Thank you.” Aster said softly. “Thank you really…”
Ezra helped her carry the items. They were just a few meters away when Rau caught up with them.
“Here,” he muttered. He placed a pack of tins atop the pile in Aster’s arms.
Her eyes widened. “Mackeral!!!” Her absolute favorite.
“Don’t mention it.” He warned.
Ezra laughed, “ Aw Rau we promise, can’t let everyone in on that you have a soft spot for Aster.”
The Mandalorian glared at the young Jedi before glancing back to Aster, “ Should you need more just let us know and keep us posted on how little Danica is doing.”
“I will.” She promised.
“You can come observe drills tomorrow.”
“I will be there.” She smiled, “ Thank you Fenn Rau.”
The Mandalorian waved them off.
—-
Danica went to sleep with her tummy full and asking for some more in the morning.
Starlight profusely thanked Ezra for his help while Aster and Maul spoke.
“I do not want to be indebted to them.” He growled
“You won’t be.” Aster argued. “They did it for Danica. It was for her.”
“You are showing them we are vulnerable.”
“I showed them that a child needed help.”
“What does that make me? That I can’t provide for my family?”
“No one is saying that, no one mentioned that. No one thinks you would stop. “ Starlight starts, taking their daughters side, “ they are like us, we want to be sure the little ones are alright. It’s why we are here.”
—-
Aster kept the mackeral tins hidden. Carefully opening one and bringing a bit to eat. A pleased sound from her lips.
It was different now. Things were different but somehow the same…
They would survive…for once not on their own.

🌌
“On the night of the comet is earth given voice,
As five children are born, and great clans rejoice.
One to the Cats, prideful lords of the hunt.
One to the Herds—stout of heart, and teeth blunt.
One to the Bears, strong as mountains and clever.
One to the Eagles, of sharp eyes and swift feathers.
And from an egg unforsaken, hatched deep in the wilds—
One to the Dragons, the First Fire’s own child.
Five with the embers of gods in their bones,
Gone forth together to perish alone.
Five sparks and five chances to cure the earth’s veins,
Else cede them to devils as deeper they drain.”
Characters from my original story! As kids, and about a decade later.
