African Sea Forest Named One of the 7 Wonders of the World.
Bloomberg has released its list of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and the kelp forests, also known as the Great African Sea Forest, are a special mention.
Located just 10 miles from Cape Town, South Africa, the kelp forests are a diverse and fascinating ecosystem. They are made up of kelp, a type of brown seaweed that grows to very large sizes. They grow on the ocean floor and can reach lengths of up to 150 feet. These seaweeds thrive in shallow, clear waters at low temperatures.
As the seaweeds grow, they form what we call a forest. The African Sea Forest serves a similar function to its Californian counterpart, providing food and shelter for a variety of marine life, from game species like lobsters, crayfish, and abalone to large predators like the Cape fur seal. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Great African Sea Forest is the diversity of shark species that call these pseudo-arboreal environments home. The forest is home to a number of rarely seen shark species, including the charismatic pyjama catshark and the shy spotted gully shark. Between the African Sea Forests are stunning reefs with gullies and channels.

At last we covered Bear Gulch! One of the most dreaded and anticipated localities on the wheel. We are looking here at an incredibly diverse marine ecosystem from the Carboniferous dominated by chondrichthyans of all shapes and sizes.
Tumblr media
What is preserved here is the fauna of a large bay spanning dozens of km². Several environments are present here, most prominent the shallow sponge reefs and the deeper algal meadows. What you see here is the very edge of the reef going into the algae.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks to the seasonality of the locality we sometimes have plant remains being carried out into the bay where they would encrust in all sorts of organisms. In my piece it's a the roots and trunk of a Lepidodendron.
Tumblr media
The size chart this time is one of the largest we had so far and was started months ago. It's a collaboration between discord member Montana and JW. Included here are many taxa that are not formerly described yet!
This piece was planned not only so much in advance because of all the creatures included but also because Montana had access to the largest collection of specimens from here and was able to provide information and specimen photos we otherwise wouldn't have been able to get!

spinner sharks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
spinner sharks are sharks which live in many subtropical waters, such as the mediterranean and the gulf of mexico!
these sharks get their name from the way they spin out of the water to catch prey
they prefer shallower offshore waters no more than 350 feet deep!
spinner sharks grow from 6–10 feet in length
they grow roughly 2 inches a year until maturity, for 10-20 years!
spinner sharks can leap up to 20 feet in the air :]

The smell of rain fills the air, though not a single drop has fallen. A huge Mosasaurus slowly swims through a warm, shallow sea, unbothered by the noisy pterosaurs.
The world seems half asleep.
Everything is gray.

Движемся навстречу солнцу с элегантным скатом (Обыкновенный пятнистый орляк). Moving towards the sun with an elegant eagle spotted stingray.

Eagle spotted stingray(Aetobatus narinari).
It is a species of cartilaginous fish of the eponymous genus of the eagle ray family. The eagle spotted stingray belongs to the genus Aetobatus, its specific name can be translated as "eagle–stingray". This is a large-sized stingray (up to 8.8 m with a tail), whose maximum wingspan can reach 330 cm, body thickness in the head area is 50 cm, and weight is up to 230 kg. The eagle stingray looks like a floating chi under watera bird of prey -- it got its name for a reason. The movements of its fins are similar to the flapping of wings, its nose is like a bird's beak. The dorsal surface of the eaglet is colored dark blue or black with white dots, the ventral side is white. The tail is longer than that of other stingrays and carries 2-6 poisonous spikes.
It is widespread in the tropical zone, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Hawaiian Islands, along the coast of West Africa, in the Indian Ocean, Oceania and along both coasts of America at depths up to 80 m. It usually leads a solitary lifestyle, but outside the breeding season it can form large flocks. In the wild, if the eagle spotted stingray is not touched, then this animal is harmless and timid. But if you step on a eagle stingray, it wraps its tail around the leg of a swimmer or fisherman who stepped on a fish and pierces poisonous thorns.People often get lacerations that need to be washed and treated.
The eagle spotted stingray has a protected status on the Great Barrier Reef along the east coast of Australia.

1. An ink that boosts coral settlement by 20 times could help rebuild reefs worldwide
Tumblr media
“Biologists have recently discovered that certain rocky pink algae, called crustose coralline algae (CCA), play an important role in attracting coral larvae and encouraging them to settle on the reef. [… Scientists] developed a transparent ink material infused with metabolites derived from CCA[, d]ubbed SNAP-X[….] By applying SNAP-X to rocks or other surfaces, researchers can create an inviting microhabitat that helps coral larvae settle and grow.”
2. New Legislation Offers Vital Support for Habitat Conservation in Cities and Towns
Tumblr media
“The bill establishes a new dedicated investment of $1 million annually for the Urban Bird Treaty program[….] In addition to supporting birds, the program supports efforts that can deliver tangible benefits to people and businesses, from increasing green space and enhancing outdoor recreation to improving resilience to flooding and minimizing urban heat islands.”
3. Has Maine learned how to make heat pumps lower electricity costs for all?
Tumblr media
“Over the next three years, the incentives in the plan are forecast to support 38,000 new whole-home residential heat pump systems — including 6,500 in low-income households — and weatherization for 9,900 houses. […] This strategy should decrease annual heating costs by more than $1,000 each for homes that switch to heat pumps [… and] suppress electricity rates by more than $490 million over the long term.”
4. Montana court strikes down ban on gender-affirming care for trans minors
Tumblr media
“[Because t]he ban violates the rights to privacy and free speech guaranteed by the Montana Constitution, and it amounts to discrimination based on viewpoint, [… the court] issued a permanent injunction against its enforcement. […] Since the ruling is based on the Montana Constitution, not the U.S. Constitution, trans youth, their families, and health care providers are protected from any potential negative outcome at the U.S. Supreme Court[….]”
5. Solar, batteries and an EV charger win funding for energy resilience scheme
Tumblr media
“[… T]he fund provides grants for projects across AusNet’s electricity distribution network […] that help build long-term community energy resilience and provide support to communities during severe weather events. [… Recipients include] nearly $50,000 for the Taggerty Community Progress Group to create a solar hybrid microgrid at its Community Hub which will act as an emergency hub for the local community.”

Here the result of the last formation stream of 2024. Over the course of 6 hours we explored the many organisms that inhabited the reefs of the Whitewater formation.
Tumblr media
This formation preserves a rich benthic community with many sessile animals. Towering above all were the giant columnar sponges of the genus Aulacers, up to 3 m tall Ordovician skyscrapers. Between them hovered cephalopods and swam the eurypterid Megalopraptus.
Tumblr media
Most organisms from here wer small, just a few centimeters, which is why Discord member JW made a second size chart just to bring across how the largest animals, Megalograptus and the giant trilobite Isotelus, compared to the rest.
I think something that is often overlooked in discussions about these formations is the animals we don't have. There are no crustaceans here, no jellyfish, although they probably still made up a significant part of the biomass. These animals are simply not preserved which makes our image of the Whitewater formation incomplete and biased towards the hard shelled organism. As a paleoartist one is constantly reminded of such gaps, we have to decide how much we want to speculate or borrow from other localities, or if we want to stick strictly to the fossil record.
In these formation pieces I usually do the latter but I'm painfully aware how much I miss in each piece.
Btw. since this is the last formation piece of the year I would love to hear which one was your favorite?!
