The footage from this 7-episode series is from my New Orleans (Nola) travel vacation from Nov 23 2023 to Nov 28 2023. The commentary and opinions from these videos are my own. 

 Episode four I take y’all to the 300+ year old African Drum Circle at Congo Square! This tradition began with enslaved Africans during the colonial period under the Black Codes. This tradition continues every Sunday as a method of cultural-heritage connectivity, communing, ancestor worship and artistic expression. I then refreshen for a night out at the jazzy Blue Nile! I emerged myself in some Nola live Jazz performed by The Soul Rebels! You know you’re good when you can play Juvenile’s Back That Ass Up to a funky jazzy beat! Lastly, I had to fill my watermelon margarita stomach up with Willie’s Chicken Shack! One chicken meal from Willie's will sweep up any loyalty from Chick Fil A, Wendy’s, Popeyes, Burger King and the infamous mediocre McDonald’s. Cap NOT detected. Comeback for episode 5 next week and complete the 7-episode series!

Girls of Paper and Fire - A quick book review!

Things I liked about this book:

• It takes place in an atypical setting; most YA fantasy books I’ve come across played in the US or in UK. This one takes place in a world inspired by Malaysian culture and it’s refreshening and lovely.

• It was pretty easy to get familiar with the world. The terms and all that. Some books offer an overwhelming amount of information but I got a nice overview of the world of Girls of Paper and Fire.

• The writing style was easy to read (which I appreciate as a non native speaker) but it was not too simplistic. I think the author uses beautiful metaphors.

• Kenzo. He’s such a cool character.

• I loved Wren’s initial demeanor. She was so mysterious and intriguing - and I loved her backstory, too.

• Multiple characters had backstories or secrets that I just didn’t expect at all.

• Physical affection between characters, including opposite-sex or same-sex where one has same-sex attraction, that has no sexual undertones but is purely platonic. I don’t think most books show enough of that.

• The plot was not predictable at all. I expected things to go into an entirely different direction. This book surprised me over and over again.

• I think the pacing was really good. I read some complaints about it but I thought it build up really nicely.

• The society. The way they kept telling themselves that being a concubine for a king is an honor. It reflects real world dictatorship brainwashing.

Things I didn’t like: (Subtle Spoiler alert)

• The way Miss Blue was written. Sorry, but she’s just such a stereotypical character. I really liked the part where more of her backstory was revealed and she became sympathetic, but I think they messed her up. Why make a character sympathetic to later write them like this?

• The protagonist was a bit boring at times. A little too typical YA protagonist.

• I’m not quite sure what to think of the word in Lei’s birth pendant. I was a bit disappointed to read that. Yeah it was unexpected, but kinda boring, in my opinion.

Charley's Cheesesteaks

Today we will be reviewing Charley’s Cheesesteaks and I ordered the regular chicken Philly combo which comes with all-white meat chicken, grilled green peppers, onions, and mushrooms topped with melted provolone cheese and served on their signature toasted roll. This cheesesteak comes with optional lettuce, tomato, mayo, and pickle. My side was the original fries seasoned and strawberry lemonade for my drink. The chicken Philly is my favorite cheesesteak and I will always give it a 10/10. The fries are always fresh and crispy and the strawberry lemonade has actual strawberry pieces in it and tastes very refreshen.

Pleasing complete review (drop 1)

I got all of the pre-sale products from Pleasing, so I thought I'd post a review for everyone. Items included are:

The Perfect Polish set - $65 (x)

The Pleasing Pen - $30 (x)

The Pearlescent Illuminating Serum - $35 (x)

Overall:

They all came in one white box with nondescript packaging. Each of the 3 products came in their own box, with a marble design and the words "open here with care" on the side. Something I noticed right away was how much smaller the boxes were than what they appear to look like online. I've included a tea bag in pics for size comparisons.

Yes all products came intact and in perfect condition.

The Pleasing Pen

This product consists of a

refreshing eye gel and

matte lip oil

The pen comes in a recycled material black box with all the information about the product. The pen itself looks sleek and is quite large and just like official pictures. The component is glass, and connects both sides in a plastic closure coated in metal. Each side is labeled with a lip or eye sticker so you know which is which. And they both have a metal roller ball applicator.

The product itself has no scent or taste, and the lip oil is matte once it's on, so it's not shiny and it's virtually invisible to the eye.

The eye gel is indeed refreshening, I could feel it under my eyes for a while after I applied it. It dries down quickly, and is not tacky or oily. I have dry skin, so this isn't enough to give me all the moisture I need, but its design is great if you want to just throw it in your purse and use throughout the day. If you have oily skin this might be good for you as it's not greasy or heavy. Although it is refreshing, it doesn't seem to actually depuff the under eyes, tho it might have that effect with continued use.

What I love:

Dries quick and is not tacky

Notes of improvement:

Since this seems like more of a 'on the go' product, the glass component makes me think that it could break in the bottom of my purse, so maybe a plastic one could be safer? Tho that would cheapen the overall appearance and it may not even be an issue.

The Pearlescent Illuminating Serum

Like the pen, the serum comes in a recycled material black box with all the information about the product. The component is glass and has a plastic light green lid and pump dispenser. It feels substantial and has weight to it. The pearls look pretty inside it, and kinda look like mermaid eggs.

Although it's a 'illuminating' serum, I didn't find it to be shiny once applied. It dries down completely and is not oily either, so even if you have oily skin you could still use it. This product is meant to be added to your skin care routine and is not a substitute for a regular moisturizer, and makeup would layer perfectly on top of it. Because it's a illuminating serum with the pearls inside it does leave some minimal shiny specs throughout the skin, tho its illuminating quality is very subtle compared to a illuminating primer for example.

The Perfect Polish set

The polishes look gorgeous in person, and are the same size as a regular nail polish bottle. The pearl marble tops are removable, tho I could not get 2 of them off because they were on there very tightly. The bottles are very pretty, I will be displaying them on my vanity.

I wanted to preface this by saying that I have been doing my own nails for nearly 20 years, and I use nail polish for that, so this is right up my alley.

The polishes smell like nail polish, tho the scent is actually not strong at all when compared to your regular polish. The applicator is perfect and covers the nails well, and the consistency of the polish itself is also excellent.

The black polish is by far the most pigmented - one coat and my nails looked perfect and really black.

The white and pink polishes need additional coats, tho that is normal - I usually do 2 coats with every single polish I've ever used.

The white polish has a very very minimal blue shift in the shimmer, tho it's not easy to see when it's on.

All the polishes have shimmer to it, except the black one. Although they are shimmery, they dry down more towards matte as opposed to shiny. If you add a regular top coat they'll look shiny.

The Pearly Tops polish is a matte polish with shimmer. When added on top on the polishes it 'transforms' them each differently. The black polish turns into a shimmery dark blue that is gorgeous. The pink gets a pearly coat with barely noticeable specs of blue in the shimmer shift and the white looks like matte pearls.

I used 2-3 coats for each, and found that regardless of that they all dried down exceptionally well and quickly. More so than a regular nail polish. And despite using several layers NONE OF THE POLISHES WERE LUMPY! They did NOT lump, and can be layered very easily! Their formula is excellent in this regard.

The white and pink need 3 layers to completely cover your nail without streaks. If you have any imperfections on your nails like dips, bumps or lines they show through and are difficult to cover. I have that issue, and you can see the natural lines I have on my nails showing through because I didn't want to add a 4th layer.

I added a base coat and top coat to some nails, and left others with just the Pleasing polish for comparison. I'll update later to see how they wear and how long they last.

The black polish is by far my favorite. I mostly only wear black nail polish, so if they start selling this as singles, I will buy this polish from now on.

Things to note about the pics below:

the bubbles on the pic w/ the top coat are from my quick dry top coat (above), not Pleasing. Pleasing did NOT bubble up despite me using several layers.

you can see the natural lines of my nails peeking through the white and pink polish (I used 3 layers for the white and 2 for the pink).

on the pic w/ top coat: compare the thumb and ring finger and you can see that adding the Pearly Top polish adds a lot of shimmer to my thumb.

on the pic w/ just Pleasing you can see how matte the Inky Pearl turns once you add Pearly Tops. The black polish turns into 2 polishes (shimmer blue vs black) and that's quite visible on this pic.

Excuse the messy nails, I didn't have time to clean up the smears or fix the imperfections. And also excuse the super yellow cast lighting, I was trying to capture the shimmer but my living room lights are quite yellow.

Things I love:

The overall look is excellent, pleasing and chic. I'll be displaying them

I can tell this is expensive nail polish, even without considering the packaging. The product itself feels high quality.

The formula is really good, not lumpy, layers VERY well.

The scent is not overwhelming, tho it's still nail polish

The Inky Pearl black polish is a standout 100%. I love that it's essentially a 2-in-1 polish when you add the Pearly Tops and it becomes a midnight blue polish. Overall super high quality and pigmentation is 10/10

Dries fast, not goopy, very easy application

You can layer a lot without it turning into a mess

Notes of improvement:

The white and pink polishes require a few layers to not be sheer or not appear streaky

If you have natural imperfections on your nails they'll show through unless you add 3+ layers (with the white and pink only).

I wish they were sold individually, as I would continue to buy Inky Pearl alone since I mostly wear black polish and this polish is excellent and so beautiful.

I did film myself putting the nail polish on, so if you'd like to see that let me know and I'll try to edit and post that.

I am seeing some weird defensiveness in the community lately so, I thought I’d write a little something up on my thoughts regarding it. Because though I love Final Fantasy XIV, my experience getting into it seems to begun to echo through the influx of WoW Refugees coming. So before I go forward let me say, I enjoy FFXIV. I think Shadowbringers is the best MMORPG story, I’ve ever been through. That being said, Heavensward was over hyped for me and Stormblood might be slightly worse than ARR for dividing its focusing among two separate revolutions. One which takes up a sizeable chunk of the game and doesn’t impact it until precisely the penultimate quest before the end of the main Stormblood MSQ. That being said, I have like 50 Million Alts and am planning an OC AU Comic to be posted eventually. With that out of the way let me say my peace:

I am glad, there is a surge of new players in FFXIV but like...ARR is still a hurdle. The story time meanders, it rarely finds focus and it feels very monster of the week up until the very end and not every player is going to wait or want to wait for that whole “It gets better later” spiel. If a game doesn’t grab a player within its first few hours, its its own fault. Another wave of new MMOs doing something different is on its way. Between New World and Ashes of Creation, the MMO Market is about to be bombarded with potential once more. After Endwalker, ARR is gonna have to be polished and shifted even more to compensate because the stagnation of the last twenty odd years ain’t cutting it no more. MMORPGs gonna have to sink or swim. No matter how much I like this game, I am not going to be writing home about how surprising the twist behind the ambush before Ifrit was. Or that same story beat is used in quick succession for Laurentius and again for Tiduslayer also being an imposter or for Thancred being possessed by Lahabrea or how it turns out the Inquisitor is also an imposter spy.

Like ARR has one twist beat and it is always that someone is a spy or isn’t who they say they are and it never refreshens it. By the end of Post-ARR its the same story beat they used for Ungust and that’s like Hours of Content that amounts to, “Yeah so, here’s another person who isn’t who they say they are.” Final Fantasy XIV is a fantastic game and all, but the incoming population shouldn’t be expected to stick around especially if we as community keep hyping up, “Oh it gets better in Heavensward” or “Oh Shadowbringers is where its at”. You set the expectations too high and they’re going to expect the second coming of Christ and as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077 or No Mans Sky or hell who remembers Spore? You put too much stock in something it is never, ever going to deliver on that promise.

I came to FFXIV during WoW Legion which is turning out to be the last good thing that MMO has done. And the grind, the overused story beats, and the world did not warm itself to me. It wasn’t until BFA that I actually broke into FFXIV and the only reason I broke through ARR is because I had already done the same thing with Dark Souls. A game about banging your head against a wall until it submits itself in defeat out of pity. Pretty sure general population didn’t get into Dark Souls either.

Point is, I am starting see a lot of defensiveness when a WoW Refugee comes over and isn’t instantly enamored with FFXIV and goes to try something else. If someone is turned off by something and goes to do something else they aren’t worst for it and they didn’t personally break into your house and steal your pets. They’re giving valid criticisms as to why it just didn’t connect with them. No one should have to get use to a look or a story. The story and look should be there to draw them in. Serve as a way to hook them and if it doesn’t there is little you can do about it.

And actually now that I think of it, I feel the need to quote a game critic talking about Dark Souls that I feel holds true for FFXIV experience and how the community seems to have to hint at it getting better at certain story beats later on:

“Now, I never reviewed Dark Souls because other titles were out and my playtime was limited, and every time I sat down to it, it was like walking into a dark shed full of rakes, immediately treading on one and getting blatted in the face. Other people with more time on their hands started telling me it was the greatest thing since tummy-rubs, so I'd go back in the shed thinking, "Well, maybe there was just the one rake," before BLAT in the face again!

So I left it for a while, but this week with plenty of free time in my schedule, I thought to myself, "Last chance! I'll just keep tanking the rakes and maybe I'll somehow become really psychotically into being rake-faced just in time to be prepared for the sequel." And I'll be blatted in the face with a rake if that isn't kind of what happened. I've been raking myself all week right up to bedtime, I'm at risk of going blind!

You see, I resisted Dark Souls partly because people kept telling me, "It's good once you're used to it" and I've always held that the same thing can be said about being boiled alive, so I'd ask them to explain why it's good and they'd reply, "Ooh, we can't tell you. You'll just have to find out for yourself." And then I'd say, "Shut up or fuck off, ideally both, in either order!" But then after watching a decent Lets Play of the game, gone over the wiki a few times and a six week preparation with a team of advisors and physical trainers, I was able to break through the wall. And I suppose that's the first failing of Dark Souls; that you need the fucking Cliff's Notes to get into it.”

Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn treads the same road and is unfortunately the entry point in the series and not everyone is built to do the grind all over again after coming from another MMO. Heavensward is an okay story, the aether currents if you’re not an altoholic like me are irritating to track down especially if, like me, you pick up flying to finish exploring a zone. Stormblood leaves much to be desired from the way it sort of forces Lyse down your throat to the way Hien just sort of goes about thing a little too pragmatically to be called a hero and doesn’t enamor any more confidence during Yotsuyu’s amnesia arc. Shadowbringers is the moment the story becomes about you. Which is kind of strange in the context that an MMO should make you feel like you are the central character and WoW’s greatest failing is in that the world changes about you and you have little say in how things actually unfold. It is a difficult balance to find but one Shadowbringers has done beautifully.

But again, to have to drag yourself through a two expansions to get to the actual goods while having the ever present need of FOMO to be with your friends. ARR certainly isn’t doing the influx any favors.

I am happy our community is welcoming and that there is a sizeable group of people sticking with it til the good stuff. To expect everyone to immediately become entranced by this new world we’re being thrown into is a little silly.

I am sure no one I follow or who can see this is causing an uproar but hey it never hurts to just get it out my system. Oh hey and there’s only 3 months until Endwalker. Here’s hoping for another solid expansion folks. Be excellent to one another even those who only stick around for five minutes and then leave the game for something else.

Introduction

I decided to say hello since I want this blog to be a kinda-studybrl.

Were there any characters you thought were badly developed and didn't get much character development in Fruits Basket or were you satisfied with pretty much everyone's arcs? Was there anything you would've liked to change if you could?

~Thank you for asking a question :). This is fun! I wrote a whole review a while back on the manga series, and I had to look at it to refreshen my memory. I fell in love with Fruits Basket ages ago, so I was really blinded by what I loved that I could not really look for the negative aspects of it (or any series) until I grew older and started to think critically.

1) One of the biggest thing I would love to change is the huge age gap between the characters that are in relationships. It really frustrated me when it came to specific characters because as an adult I just cannot accept it. I cannot justify it. I understand it’s a story, but this series means a lot to me, and I would love to be able to share it with other people in my life without them having to be creeped out by it. I can also imagine young teenagers finding this type of relationship to be ideal or even romantic when it is not, and if so, very rare. In addition to that, I cannot imagine people who have been taken advantage of in that way connect with this manga or the characters without it being triggering. I do not know how to explain it; I just feel like this series did so well with exploring the concept of abuse and trauma EXCEPT for that type of abuse, and it’s a shame. I’m just lucky I’m able to objectively look at it, appreciate the good and easily let go of the bad because I did not relate too much to those characters. You know, if those type of relationships were introduced at the very beginning of the series, I probably would have dropped it immediately back then.

2) As I reflect on your question, I wish they explored Kagura’s character a little more. I never really empathized with her because of how abusive she was (I know it was for humor, but I have never found that type of humor funny), but she was more than the girl who just liked Kyo; there were only a few moments when we actually got a glimpse of who she really was. There must have been something more to her as not only did she train with Shishio , but we also know she had some strong bond with Rin and Ritsu.

3) I’m also really biased since Yuki is my anime-spirit, but I would have loved Machi to have more of the limelight. We know her story, but I want to see her personality shine as much as Kakeru or Yuki (e.g. Yuki is presented as this kind, soft, well-mannered teenager, but eventually we realize that he is slightly a jerk, mean, weak, and awesome at the same time) 

  4) REN! I  could care less about her, but she wasn’t really explored. Her motives seemed comparatively superficial; judging how this series attempted to make one empathize with all the characters, even the mean ones, Ren did not have a “redemption” arc like the others.

4b) I think I wasn’t a fan of the adults in this series; their problems just seemed so trivial to me (*cough*Shigure’s romantic life*cough*). I did not like Akito either but I understood how necessary this character was. hhhmmm…maybe, just maybe, when it came to the adults, I wish Kureno had more of a story. They kept saying that Kureno was similar to Tohru, but we also know his relationship mirrored Katsuya and Kikyo …AND I REFUSE TO BELIEVE TOHRU IS LIKE KATSUYA OR KURENO! lol

5) I believe the ending with the dramatic injury was very quick-paced and rushed. I loved when Yuki and Kyo had their moment yelling at each other, but I do not believe the injury should have been the reason why Kyo confessed his feelings. Borderline soap-opera.

6) As I watched this new series, I forgot how episodic the story actually feels. It does not bother me, but I can imagine people dropping it because the meat of the story has yet to be introduced.

(I heard Natsuki Takaya mentioned that she wanted to write more about Ritsu but just did not have the time to do so, so I’m not going mention that character)

~ Overall, I was really satisfied with the characters and their development. I honestly felt that the main trio and their personal growth is what made Fruits Basket unique. I love my three children, and I’m so grateful that they exist within this fictional story. Fruits Basket has taught me so much, and it continues to teach me. ~
