For the context behind this photo, this Trumpeter Swan flew 60 feet across the pond beside the trail to launch herself at this Canada Goose that was absolutely minding its own business.

The criminal photographed after her crime, Miss P18 all stanced up. I'm obsessed with her....
#the trumpeter swans are tagged in the area to keep track of where they hang out in summer vs winter#and other stuff#theres been a reintroduction effort for these guys for years in the area where i took this#trumpeter swan#canada goose#mine#she literally fought this goose for no reason#it was incredibly funny

I need you all to appreciate how crazy it is to have watched the scimitar horned oryx go from a poster child for "it only exists in zoos" to merely endangered (not even critically endangered!) over my lifetime.
So many heroic people contributed ridiculous amounts of time and effort to make this captive breeding and reintroduction effort a success.

PEOPLE THIS IS NOT A DRILL BEAVERS ARE GOING TO BE FREELY RELEASED INTO THE WILD IN THE UK THIS IS HUGE!!!
It is such, such a big deal. The difference this will make for biodiversity, for carbon sequestration, for protecting us from flooding, for nature connection. People have been fighting so hard for so long to bring our beaver neighbours home and free them from the fences they’ve been kept behind. Not ashamed to admit I’ve cried a bit today after hearing this news. This is a wonderful step to make us just a bit wilder, a bit more ecologically intact, a bit more free. Moments like this remind me that progres seems unthinkable until it happens, and then it feels inevitable. I can’t wait for the first release - and shoutout to the illegal beaver bombers who got them a foothold when red tape was holding people back.
Lynx next!!!!

This bird came back from extinction - now scientists in a glider are teaching it to migrate
Extinct in central Europe for 300 years, 36 northern bald ibis are following an ultralight aircraft on their long-forgotten migration route from Austria to Spain

Fritz was inspired by the 1996 film Fly Away Home in which the main character flies an ultralight plane to show orphaned geese their migratory path. The film was based on the work of “Father Goose” Bill Lishman, a naturalist who taught Canadian geese in the same way in 1988.

Breeding efforts to increase their population over the past two decades have been successful, but without guidance from wild ancestors, the birds – known for their bald red head and long curved beak – no longer had any knowledge of which direction to fly for winter. Early reintroduction attempts were largely unsuccessful – instead of returning to suitable wintering grounds such as Tuscany, Italy, the birds flew in different directions and died.

When they reach the wintering grounds, the birds become fully independent and no longer need their foster parents, although they still recognise them years later and actively approach to say hello (the birds have a ritual greeting in which they spread their hair and bow, making a “chrrupp” noise). The central European population has increased from zero to almost 300 since the start of the project in 2002, and in 2011 the first bird migrated back to Bavaria from Tuscany without human help.
This is amazing and also very sweet. Do click though and read the whole article at the Guardian.

Dandelion News - November 8-14
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $kaybarr1735 or check out my Dandelion Doodles!
1. Agrivoltaics for sustainable food, energy and water management in East Africa
“[… C]ertain crops […] thrived under the partial shade provided by solar panels. The shade also helped to reduce water loss through evaporation, leading to more efficient water usage. Additionally, rainwater harvested from the panels could be used to supplement irrigation needs.”
2. The world’s largest wildlife crossing is now standing in California
“The structure crosses a 10-lane freeway and has been built to help protect all sorts of wildlife[….] And it’s not just for fauna: some 5,000 plants grown from seed collected within a five-mile radius have been nurtured in two specially created nurseries. The bridge will be topped with wildflowers, shrubs and native grasses that will also benefit insect populations.”
3. Judge rules the military must cover gender-affirming surgery for members' dependents
“[Judge] Torresen found that [gender-affirming] surgery is indeed medically necessary and that the Defense Department had not shown that any important governmental interest was advanced by denying the coverage.”
4. Social Media Can Boost Caracal Conservation

“The team found that searches on the species doubled after the project [using “social media to educate about the caracal”] launched. […] ”The research demonstrates how a public interest in urban ecology and the global phenomenon of ‘cats on the internet’… can be harnessed to leverage conservation action.””
5. US Labor Board Bans Captive Audience Meetings to Ensure 'Truly Free' Worker Choice
“[T]he National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday ruled that employers cannot force workers to attend anti-union speeches. [… W]orkers will no longer have to take part in so-called "captive audience meetings," which employers often use as a union-busting tool and a form of coercion.”
6. Study links grazing with plant phenology and abundance
“In general, plants where caribou or muskoxen were present experienced earlier green-up and greater abundance later in the growing season. “We're used to thinking of the timing of plant availability as impacting the productivity of grazing animals, but not the reverse," Post said.”
7. Frog populations once decimated by disease mount a major comeback
“"These results provide a rare example of how reintroduction of resistant individuals can allow the landscape-scale recovery of disease-impacted species, and have broad implications for amphibians and many other taxa that are threatened with extinction by novel pathogens."”
8. California Announces Special Session To Protect Trans People
“Newsom’s directive is clear: safeguard reproductive healthcare, support immigrants, and shield LGBTQ+ people from what is viewed as existential threats to civil rights and democratic norms. […] California has a unique opportunity to set the blueprint for other states in resisting a Trump administration[….]”
9. When ‘OK, Boomer’ Means ‘Let’s Go Protest’
“Youth activists across the country recognize the efforts of their eco-minded predecessors and welcome them as mentors, role models, and collaborators in their battle against the climate crisis. […] “The idea that Boomers don’t care, he said, is “just misinformation.””
10. How Aussie Waste Warriors are Redirecting Excess Food to Those in Need
“A growing movement is working to reduce perfectly good food going to waste by redirecting it to homes and charities. [… C]haritable organisations [… are] transforming fresh produce that would otherwise have gone to waste into millions of cooked, nutritious meals for people in need each year.”

cant really begin to care too much about 'de-extincting' mammoths (by making proxies out of elephants) as a real thing tbh bc the ppl behind it are not gonna convince me that engineering a proxy mammoth has any actual intended utility to them other than "being on display for money".
#their talk about reintroduction just completely ignores the material reality of the fight to get EXTANT megafauna back in their native range#i wish we could put even half this kind of passion towards bison#what about the material reality of the challenges ELEPHANTS already go through in their native ranges?#you cant even whisper about putting wolves back in europe w/o ppl bringing out pitchforks but ur gonna just have these guys wandering around#ok.

#sobble#now THIS was the starter that i chose in my actual playthrough of swsh. this little fucker was Basically my reintroduction to pokémon#bc as i've talked abt many times i had a long reprieve from pokémon during my teenage years and only got back into it#with the release of swsh. and this thing was the starter i chose at that time#subconsciously i think the reason i chose them is because i wanted to be subversive. right#i do this sometimes. for some reason. where i know there's an obvious option i wanna pick but i don't do it because i don't wanna be#“obvious” and choose the “obvious” choice that everyone knows i would pick so i pick a different‚ more obscure option for some reason#i did this with sobble over scorbunny. more recently i did it in every playthrough of bg3 i've ever done#where i've never played a dragonborn despite OBVIOUSLY KNOWING i would choose a dragonborn#because i don't wanna be too “obvious”. i dunno i should just play a dragonborn already. and i should just admit to liking cinderace

With Vijinx it's the obsession, it's the love and devotion. The endless chase and hunt of it all. It's the never going to leave you, I'll always find you, I will always love you in every timeline, in every conceivable way. It's the 'I'll never turn away from you if it was my decision' OF IT ALL man.
Jinx and Caitlyn literally have to gatekeep knowledge of Jinx being alive from Vi because they both know she'll doggedly chase Jinx down to the ends of the earth. And Jinx would do the same if she didn't think Vi would lose it all for her. They will always incorporate the other into their lives, the way they live, the reason to wake up every morning, a hair stripe, a necklace, a partner that almost a 1:1 mirror of them, a shrine devoted to them. Even when they aren't physically in each other's lives anymore they find a way.
They've witnessed who the other was and used to be, missed what changed them and how they changed, and now they're at a point where they don't really know each other anymore. And they get to find out and I think that's beautiful.
I want them to have a sappy reunion, a heartfelt talk. This could definitely not be read as a ship for this post but I do fully mean it that way 🤷♀️ I also think they should make out passionately and aggressively for all the time they lost together.
#vijinx#i think they are so so in love with each other it's sickeningly sweet#love isn't everything though#i also think their dynamic is funny#i want them to bother each other and annoy each other#i also want them to get to know who the other is as they are now#a reintroduction of sorts#turns out regardless they're still madly into the other
