On a more personal note, I am personally an animation graduate who graduated in 2021 and has not been able to get a job in animation. I am lucky enough to have a job in reprographics and a member of LOCAL ATU 241 (union strong baby!) but unfortunately a lot of my fellow graduates are struggling in the field or unable to find jobs. This is a symptom of the problem. Which is why it is important not just for us animators but also for YOU to help TAG win their fight!

Wiskayok High School VS Landmoore High School, the much-awaited regional game is on the rise! Its 2.43pm on a Tuesday afternoon and im sat on the bleachers with my camera, essentially looking like a total spy – (i am not) – whilst the Yellowjackets are in full swing of a very heated scrimmage, It was Coach Scotts idea for me to document the Yellowjackets’ success, so I have made the effort to show up to their practices whenever I can.

I give my lens a wipe with my sleeve and begin to take a handful of half-decent photos, god, some of these girls are not photogenic at all… oh and theres Misty... she doesnt know that she doesnt have to actually be here, shame. I snap a few shots of her anyway, she notices the camera pointing her way, and gives me a big wave, I wave back, shes a sweet girl.

They are now halfway through the scrimmage and my camera keeps finding its way back to one particular person – Van Palmer. The Yellowjackets’ Goalie. Ive had a few light conversations with her, the usual “have you got a pen?” in history, or the “do you mind running to reprographics to print something for me?” when van needs a couple copies of study materials printed, because its gotten to a point where i run reprographics, i am the designated printer girl, atleast, thats what van calls me. I do catch my eyes finding her in the hallways accidentally (staring at her by her locker on purpose) and ive begun to think about her more often than not. Now, I wouldn’t say I’m yearning after her, that might be a bit of a stretch (it isn’t. at all.) but she looks like she was made for the camera, the way she brushes her hand through her hair, the way she defends her goal almost territorially. its just so captivating.

As I am actively giving Van a photoshoot, I don’t know when, i was too engrossed in her, but I now realise she is staring directly into the camera, eyebrows raised with her tongue in her cheek, the unexpectency of the expression startles me - I end up quickly stealing a photo of her in that moment, looking at me like that.. for documentation purposes of course. I quickly pan my camera down and take a deep breath before looking up at the field, finally making eye contact with Van without the barrier of a lens. I can't read her, she looks amused but also, knowing? Like she knows ive been watching documenting!

3.30pm and they reach the end of their practice, I begin to pack away my camera into its sticker-clad case, and then I quickly scurry off back into the main building to print my photos, i did not wanna be approached by van.

Reprographics room has become kind of like a hide out for me, ever since our rep guy retired, I have been given the keys from the principal as per my request, as long as I “use it sensibly” I am unsure how someone could use a room with a computer and a couple printers insensibly, but I digress –

I walk in and sit myself down, taking out my camera and sifting through all the photos Id taken, theres quite a few good ones of Jackie, the captain, and some of a very just-happy-to-be-there Misty, and oh, wow, some good ones of Van, really good ones.

I insert the memory card from my camera into the computer to see the pictures a bit clearer, and then start printing, I have about 29 in total, so it could take a while. I click through the photos of Van on the computer, gazing at the bigger but slightly staticky screen - so maybe this is yearning, wanting.. so what? crushes are totally okay, im just documenting mine, and even if i-

my train of justifying-my-actions-thoughts is interrupted by a voice behind me

“Didn’t know this was my photoshoot”

I almost shit myself.

I turn around in my spin chair, visually stunned, hand clutching my heart

“Please, god, announce yourself when you come in, that was so creepy” I can barely breathe out

Van is incredibly pleased with herself; I can tell from her face that she wanted to catch me off guard because she knew i had been focusing the camera on her all practice

She leans over my shoulder from behind me and rests her arm on the desk, practically trapping me in, staring at the computer screen infront of us both

“Wowww, you got some pretty good ones, ill give you that” she murmurs

“I think they’re all good” I proclaim quietly

“What, you actually got some photos of other people? Its not all me?”

I let out an exaggerated ‘pffft’ “of course i did, i mean, look-“ I frantically grab for some of the printed photos, trying to defend my case with every inch of my being “look see! See! Misty! Right there” I jab at the paper I am showing her “and here!” I find the only other piece of paper that isnt her or Misty “Jackie!! i have some pictures of Jackie!!” i announce, sounding farrr too excited about my defense

Van is amused by the entire ordeal, she stands there, slying smiling at the photos, totally playing into whatever this was becoming

“yeah, of course, the Misty and Jackie photos are a staple in your collection, but you have... maybe 24 photos of me? Why is that?” she quizzes, smirking over at the now rather large stack of printed photos, like shes playing some sort of game with me

“you just, erm, the lens captures you quite well, and you, er, stay in the same spot at the goal so its easier to capture you still?” yeah, that was such a weak answer. my reasons sound more like excuses being pulled from thin air, and Im beginning to not sound so sure of myself.

I stand up to collect my prints when Van jolts, she grabs them out the printer before I can

“Oooooh! me.. me.. me laughing.. me stretching.. and more of me!” Van teases as she flicks through the stack

“Give them back! I need to put them in my folder!” I try and grab them back, but she holds them above my head

“what like, your own personal folder?” She teases “because i think this is too many copies of me for the yellowjackets folder”

I back her up against my desk

“Give me my photos” I whisper, inches away from her face

“You mean my photos?” She whispers back, challenging

we stand in silence, the tension is loud, it feels like our eyes are communicating, yet i have no idea what hers are saying

Van jumps at the opportunity to catch me off guard again, she drops the pile of pictures, & cradles the side of my face sweetly before pulling me into a heated kiss – it was messy. It was loud. It was it was desperate. It was genuine.

she gets needy, grasping at my shirt and pulling me in at the waist to try and get even closer, not that its physically possible – she flips us around, I’m backed up against the desk with her leg between mine. She lightly moans into the kiss, like she couldn’t be having a better time if she tried, my hips jolted forward involuntarily at the sound, looking for any type of friction

within minutes im desperately grinding myself against vans thigh, wishing she would just do something, she finds a rhythm of adding more pressure with her thigh with every roll of my hips, trailing kisses down my neck, hands under my shirt messing with my bra clasp, whilst im throwing my head back in lust

she stops momentarily “Do you really want me like this?” van breathes out against my neck, unsure if shes teasing, or asking

“i nee-“

rattle rattle rattle

are you actually being serious right now.

A voice can be heard from beyond the locked door (did van lock the door on her way in?), stopping our rep room rendezvous

“Janitor! We are lockin up now, everybody out”

“Come over later?” I look up at her

“Maybe I can watch you organise those pictures” She winks as she backs up off of me, grabs her stuff, and walks out the room, leaving me completely winded.

Today i printed out my final illustrations into sticker paper in reprographics, i then cut them out to finally stick them on the bins outside LCC i hope they stay there and are used.
