Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a Titan vs. Titan fight and I apologize for nothing. I woke up and chose violence throughout this entire poll.
Seven-time Tony nominee, two-time winner Bernadette Peters (1948) has a sixty-plus year stage career of monumental proportions. Considered the foremost Sondheim interpreter, their collaborative works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Gypsy (2003), and Follies (2011). She has a thriving concert career, and was a co-founder of the beloved Broadway Barks event each year in Shubert Alley. She has an honorary third Tony (Isabelle Stevenson Award) for her outstanding advocacy and philanthropy.
Eight-time Tony nominee, three-time winner Patti LuPone (1949) has a staggering fifty-plus year stage career. Award-winning roles include Eva Peron in Evita (1979), Gypsy (2008), and Company (2022). She has toured the US with her wildly successful concert and cabaret acts, and will kill you on sight if she sees a cell phone in the theatre. Patti was NOT Norma Desmond on Broadway, and because of it, is the proud owner of the ALW Memorial Pool. She is no longer a member of Actors' Equity.

"Do I even need to write propaganda for these women? Do they not speak for themselves? Very well. Bernadette Peters in Cinderella (1997) was my very first, official, undisputed gay awakening. I was three, and enamored with the stepmother. This would prove to be a blueprint in my life, and well, here we are, twenty-some-odd years later, with a thing for stage actresses who play redheaded stepmothers in various Cinderella adaptations. It's a surprisingly common phenomenon."

"This woman can breech the sound barrier. The reverberation she gets on that one note in her Anything Goes Tony performance physically rearranges every atom in my body every time I hear it. Patti is THE definition of a Broadway Diva, with more than just a little touch of star quality. Her 54 Below show was an absolute riot from start to finish."

(Please note, dear voters, that the above quote is from a clickhole article, and Patti LuPone never actually said it, but it would be on-brand of her if she had.)

Don't Be a Drag, Just Be a Queen
It was my ten year HRT anniversary, and I originally planned to just stay in and celebrate at home, but my boyfriend convinced me to go out to my local gay bar. I resisted originally, but after ten years of transitioning, it felt right to celebrate in public, to show how confident I was in my body, after plenty of surgery and hormones.
After a couple drinks, it was time to go to the bar, the bouncer raised an eyebrow at my ID, but let me in without issue. I'm used to people questioning me, so it's nothing strange. As soon as I walked in the front door, dressed to the nines with my best makeup look, a stranger came up to me, grabbing my arm and hurrying me towards the back of the bar.
"Hey, let me go! Who the hell are you?"
I looked the stranger up and down; a fabulously made-up drag queen, in a sequinned dress with an obvious bulge. He ignored my question, guiding me toward the stage.
"Hush up honey, you're on in ten minutes! I hope you got a great act planned, especially with that wig..."
"It's...it's not a wig..."
I feel my scalp tingle, and self-consciously rub my ha- my wig. I didn't think it was THAT obvious, it's not my fault I could never grow my hair very much.
"What show? I'm just here to drink, I'm not an entertainer"
"You're a riot, Felix, but be serious, you've been performing here for years."
"My name isn't Felix, it's Felici- Felic- it's Felix!"
"Yes honey, I know your name, now get your ass made up, right doll?"
I feel my head start to haze over, I'd never been here before tonight, had I? That's ridiculous, of course I've been here before, I'm the Queen of this bar. I feel my thighs tingle as my heels heighten, sending me tottering, but I quickly adjust, moving forward with a sassy strut to the backstage area. A chair faces me in front of a well-lit dresser as my second in command Poppy pushes me into the chair.
"I don't get why you even try to pass hunty, you're so OBVIOUSLY a Queen, I mean, look at you!"
Poppy turns the chair around, and my heart jumps at my reflection. My jawline is much stronger than it should be, a slight shadow of stubble, my face much more obviously masculine. My makeup is...not what I put on? A dramatic, draggy, faaaaabulous look that all my fellow fags love! Wait, what? But I'm...I'm a straight woman, right? I grasp my boobs to reassure myself, but my chest feels nothing, as I lift my oversized breastplate.
"Babes what the RU happened to my titties?"
"I told ya, you shoulda gone bigger hun, I got your spare back here, wanna switch out?"
"You know it bitch!"
It's getting harder and harder to remember how I got here, my brain reshaping into something new as I remove my top and oversized bra, and I have one more flash of lucidity, reaching my hand to my surgically perfect pu- to my tightly tucked cock.
"Oh thank Gaga, I thought something was HORRIBLY unfabulous darling, now help me into my titties~"
I work with Poppy to get my J-cup breastplate on, then slip into the most scandalous, glitzy latex minidress in my wardrobe, giving Poppy an overly-flamboyant kiss on the cheek, teasing my hair even bigger than my titties. I give Poppy a big, false-eyelashed wink and sashay out on stage, posing for the spotlight.
"Welcome, Ladies and Gays, to Fifi Nova's Fabulous Cabaret! Are y'all ready for an utterly slaytastic evening?~"

i've been, perhaps i can say habitually at this point, ruminating on retro throwback style. there are distinctly two sorts of ways to do it -- sabrina carpenter's bombshell styling is very boring to me, because it's an implied fantasy of "sexy" while being "modest" (the quote marks are part of the fantasy here). it's exactly as reactionary as when starbucks did a barbara kruger style BLONDE IS BOLD ad blast during the riots while everybody was trying to smash their windows and rolled out "mediterranean inspired" za'atar salads (which is to say, they were doing middle eastern food the way white people might do it in italy). the other way is authentic kitsch. like a double edged sword. you have to delve into the kitsch so genuinely that it comes out the other end ambiguous. this is why for example pizzicato five and deee-lite can pull off 60s in the 90s while every proverbial millennial who tries to do a goth-adjacent 1920s fascinator at the generic brand dresden dolls cabaret falls flat. it's like one of them springs out of a real love for the style and the other springs out of wanting to be seen as stylish, you know what i mean? one is terrified to offend or to be caught in a faux pas and the other is really gunning for that exact reaction so they can have a laugh about it. "isn't this the ugliest paisley you've ever seen?" with a wink and so on

Hi! What’s a song that makes you think of your favorite character or ship from Bob’s Burgers?
uuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Okay
I think Louise would 100% be into riot grrrl bands or dark cabaret because it's also very "prohibition era criminal" which is a concept I'm clearly obsessed with and I think she would be too.
I think these give very much her vibes:
Piss Punk by vial
It gives the same angry rebellious essence she has.
Girl Anachronism by The dresden dolls
Similar to piss punk but a little sadder
Louise by TV girl
cuz the title and the emotional constipation it sings about
And on a more Louigan note:
I love you like an alcoholic by The taxpayers
It's what I listened to while sketching my first prohibition louigan drawing.
Francis Forever by Mitski
It makes me think of coming to terms with romantic feelings that I don't think come easy to our girly.
And Guys my age by Hey violet
It was the first song I put on my louigan playlist cuz it felt fitting.

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bold and brassy beltress Beth Leavel (1955) burst onto the Broadway stage in 42nd Street in 1985, and has since been in eleven additional shows. She won a Tony in 2006 for her showstealing performance in The Drowsy Chaperone, and was subsequently nominated twice more. Other stage work includes The Prom (2018), Mamma Mia (2009), and Lempicka, slated to open this spring. She is a frequent solo cabaret artist, and regional actress.
Donna Murphy (1959) is a two-time Tony-winning legend of the Broadway stage, with five nominations in all, each for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Her gripping performance as the chronically ill Fosca in Sondheim's Passion (1994) may have disgusted and disturbed audiences, but earned her immense critical acclaim. Two years later, she won her second Tony for The King and I (1996), and the year after that, earned a Daytime Emmy. She adopted a five-pound dog named Pippi Shortstocking Murphy-Elliott, and it's one of the cutest fucking things you'll ever see.

"With a voice like a foghorn to rival that of Ethel Merman, Beth Leavel is still as strong and brassy as ever. I've been to two of her cabarets, and have fallen a little in love each time. Many women (and men) have done "Before the Parade Passes By," but her version is my personal favorite."

"She's Donna Fucking Murphy. A certified Sondheim Lady in Red DIVA who Sondheim himself considered one of his greatest interpreters. I cannot stress enough how much I desire this woman carnally. She has spent decades of her life shamelessly dedicated to the no-bra/stiff-nipple combo, and I am appreciating it respectfully. Also, this woman is a Grade A Flirt who knows exactly what she's doing. I am in love, and have been for decades of my life. I saw 150 shows in 2023 and Donna Murphy in Dear World was at the top of the damn list. Beth Leavel, I love you, but I need Donna Murphy to sweep her section of this tournament, because if she doesn't, I will riot. "
