➶ going on late night walks near Han river *ೃ༄
Going on late night walks was something that unexpectedly brought to you so much comfort, you spent almost every weekend’s late evenings right near the Han river. The way soft breeze hit your skin with the slightest blow of wind, the way cicadas sang in the bushes along with the buzzing of street lights, the way he held your hand dearly rubbing it with his thumb from time to time, it all made your heart bubble up with joy. Jungwon also never seemed to get tired by your late night strolls, but he genuinely always awaited them. Even though the distance from your apartment to the riverside wasn’t small, and the time of your strolls was rather too late to take a metro, nothing could take away the bliss it made both of you feel.
The night was quite chilly, even though it was beginning of May. Not many people dared to have a walk near the river in this weather, and only a few cyclists rode past you. Walking hand in hand you talked about this week’s work you had, gossip, and what you planned for the weekend. Swinging you arms back and forth you started laughing and just fooling around in the surrounding full of trees and sound of cicadas.
“Are you not cold?” he asked softly after you calmed down and zipped your jacket up.
You watched as he did so with a slight frown knitting on his brows. You smiled and reached on your tippy-toes to kiss him sweetly, taking him off guard. In response he just wrapped his hands around your waist and deepened the kiss, the calmness of the river favouring to the intimacy you had at the moment.

One of Jungwon’s favourite traits for you was how talkative he became around you, sharing uncommon conversations that brought up his opinions, never shared thoughts and worries but also funny stories. He could talk with you for hours and would not get bored. Seeing how late it got he often would just ask you if you were willing to stay up with him to talk a bit more, making your heart melt at the way he still didn’t have enough of your company.
“Are you not tired already? We can already go and sleep,” Jungwon reassured you, hoping you would disagree, which you did.
“I’m not, Wonie.”
“Then, can we talk a bit more?” he asked, his eyes holding both bright stars and his fond love as he looked at you. You nodded in response, not being able to contain your smile.
He continued to tell you passionately about his recent observations waiting for you to tell him about yours too. He listened to them attentively and nodded constantly, making his remarks from time to time.
“You know, I think I will never have enough talking with you,” he suddenly confessed.
“Then I guess we should stock up with plenty of coffee because I could talk to you day and night.”

I think we all know how many pictures he takes daily. When you started dating him his friends warned you to never leave your phone with him unattended, while some stated you shouldn’t listen to them. Leaving you confused you once decided to put this to the test. While you were hanging out at your place you went to the toilet purposefully leaving your phone with him not expecting to find almost 100 selfies taken from different angles with cute or angrily cute facial expressions.
“I need to go to the toilet.” Jungwon heard and soon you left him on the couch, stopping a movie you’ve been watching.
He followed you with his gaze until your silhouette disappeared behind the bathroom door. Noticing you left your phone he thought for a second, hesitating if he should take it. The urge to leave you bunch of his selfies though was much stronger than that momentary scruple. He swiped to the camera and took about 30 photos (at least that’s what he thought). Knowing which pose worked well and which expression to make your gallery was soon full of pictures of his face.
As soon as he heard you flushing the toilet he put your phone right from where he took it and tried to not let you suspect anything weird. When you came back he just send you a smile and just said pointing to the TV with his head: “Let’s continue.”
➶ playing with your jewelry *ೃ༄
At first you didn’t even notice when he started doing playing with your earrings, necklaces or bracelets. What made you realise was when he stated that one bracelet in particular was his personal favourite to play with leaving you pretty confused. Then you started to actually notice that he continuously played with the beads or pendants of your jewelry. It became such a routine for both of you, first him helping you wear it and keep the clasps at the right place to unintentionally ruining it and messing it with his fingers.
You sat comfortably at the table along with your friends, finally having time for shared meal at your favourite barbecue place. To your left sat your boyfriend, whom you met thanks to the group. Few of them even called themselves godmothers of your relationship, claiming that if not for them it would have taken much longer for you two to start dating.
You laughed, shared recent news about your lives, so much none of you noticed how much time you’ve spent together. Taking a short while to eat and drink you noticed how Jungwon started fidgeting with your bracelet on your left hand, that rested on his thigh.
Watching if the rest is paying attention you softly asked: “Are you okay, Won?”
Your question confused him and he shook his head with a frown. After you took a quick glance at your hand and him following your gaze he realized why you could have thought he was feeling somehow anxious. He laughed slightly and assured you: “I’m okay, lovely. Thanks for concern but assure you I’m having a bliss right now.” He stopped playing with the beads of your bracelet and took your hand in his.

Hopefully one day he will realise how much of an impact this has on you. Jungwon would just casually put his hand on your waist when trying to walk past you, the thought of you getting immense amount of butterflies never crossed his mind, leaving him confused on why you’re blushing so hard. For some time he stopped doing that, thinking it made you uncomfortable. Until one day, his hand slipped in front of his, forgetting to not do that. He cursed himself in his thoughts, but all the guilt disappeared when one of his friend’s commented while you were gone. “Wow, the impact you have on them, Jungwon.”
“You think so?” Jungwon asked, remembering all the moments you blushed whenever he did that.
“Of course! Can’t you see? They’re totally whipped!”
His friend exclaimed and he started to beat himself for not realising earlier on. He decided to put that to the test, now doing it almost every given possible moment, and just like he wished your reaction remained the same. Getting bold because of it he held you for a little longer this time, pulling you body against his in the swift motion. That’s when he could clearly see your flustered face that got rosy red from the sudden blush. He smiled to himself, feeling excitement and somehow pride he had such affect on you. Not wanting to bother you any longer the planted a soft yet quite long kiss on your lips and just walked away, leaving you confused for the rest of the day.

Jungwon’s heart despite his quite sarcastic nature was warmer than the Sun itself. The way he cared for his loved ones was sometimes intense, but mostly just made everybody feel at ease around him. His love for you was seen mostly in those kind gestures, just like him putting a blanket for you while you’re taking your nap, or just fell asleep while he worked until late night hours. He would gently cover your body, not making even a slightest blow of a wind with the movement, taking his time to watch the peacefulness of your sleeping form.
Jungwon was about to exclaim he was back home, but the apartment seemed to quiet. His immediate thought was that you were once again asleep, too tired to wait for him. He felt guilty, but since it was quite stormy moment in his company he had to stay at work until ungodly hours. He made his way to the living room, where only one lamp’s dimmed light illuminated the room. He heard soft breathing and soon also saw how in deep sleep you were in the moment. Smiling to himself with eyes filled with his pure love he brushed away the strand of your hair in a careful motion. Reaching to the armchair he took a blowsy blanket and slowly covered you, tucking you in. Gently kissing your forehead, he decided to let you sleep a little longer before he wakes you up to lay comfortably in bed.

NASCAR Numerology: How NASCAR's Current Teams Got Their Numbers: Part Three.
Alright guys, we've done Trackhouse, Penske, Wood Brothers, RCR, and SHR, now we're gonna cover the numbers for Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, and Spire Motorsports. That's a grand total of nine cars to cover and some very historic numbers, so let's get on with the origins, the meaning, and some of the notable events in the history of some of the most significant numbers in modern day NASCAR.
We start with Hendrick Motorsports, which is a bit of a mess for two reasons:
The first is that Hendrick has like three different numbering schemes simultaneously: One built around the #5, one built around the #24, and a handful of car numbers that don't fit into either scheme.
The other is that Hendrick Motorsports has recently restructured, to the point where...the #5 is the #48, the #48 is the #88, the #9 is the #24, and the #24 is the #5.
Confused yet? Don't worry, I'll explain it all.
The Hendrick Motorsports story begins in 1984 with the All-Star Racing #5 of Geoff Bodine. This team initially had high aspirations, trying to sign the likes of Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Tim Richmond, but after sponsorship and co-ownership deals fell through, Rick Hendrick was left holding the bag alone, he and Geoff Bodine would need to make do with each other.
Well...they won Martinsville, Nashville Fairgrounds, and the season finale at Riverside.
This was enough to keep the #5 team alive, and for 1985, they returned, now properly under the Hendrick Motorsports banner. The #5 didn't win in 1985, but improved results throughout the season moved them up from 9th in the standings to 5th.
This was enough to finally win over Tim Richmond, who came over to start a second team with Folgers sponsorship - this was the #25, and Rick Hendrick's dad, Papa Joe, co-owning this entry.
Tim Richmond took seven wins in 1985 and finished 3rd in the standings, but unknown to everyone else...he was suffering from AIDS all this time. This would keep him out of the car for most of 1987 - with Benny Parsons running a Folgers #35 car in his place - but he would return midseason and immediately win two in a row at Pocono and Riverside.
Unfortunately, Richmond's return would only last eight races. Tim Richmond would attempt to return to NASCAR for 1988, but the medications he was taking to manage his illness conflicted with NASCAR's drug testing policy. Richmond would die from AIDS complications in August 1989.
Hendrick Motorsports at this point ran three numbers built around the #5 - the #5, the #25, and the #35.
They were also running the first non-scheme numbers in the form of the #17 with Darrell Waltrip, however, DW would take his team and his number in 1991 to start his own team, Darrell Waltrip Motorsports. The split was amicable, and Rick Hendrick actually helped DW get the team setup.
The next team - and the next numbering scheme - came in 1993, when Hendrick Motorsports hired Jeff Gordon to drive the #24. Initially, the team had intended to run the #46 - because for the movie Days of Thunder, Hendrick Motorsports provided the car and had Greg Sacks race at Phoenix 1989, Atlanta 1990, and Darlington 1990 to acquire footage.
The City Chevrolet sponsorship on the $46 Days of Thunder car is actually modeled on a real Chevrolet dealership that Rick Hendrick owns in Charlotte.
Unfortunately, issues with Paramount - who distributed Days of Thunder - prevented Hendrick Motorsports from running the #46 for real. So instead, they picked the #24, because it had relatively little history in NASCAR prior to Gordon, it was available, and it came right before #25. Thus began the most dominant partnership of the 1990s.
Jeff Gordon would win 93 times and would win championships in 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001.
Terry Labonte in the #5 would add to Hendrick's 1990s domination with a 1996 championship.
Such was Jeff Gordon's success that, in 2001, Rick Hendrick allowed Jeff to become the co-owner of a new entry - the #48 of Jimmie Johnson. #48 was double #24, beginning the new numbering scheme. This would also see a part-time #84 car for Kyle Busch in 2004.
Jimmie would win the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2016 championships in the #48, equaling the 7 titles of Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.
Then we get the #88 car, which was set up in 2008 for Dale Earnhardt Jr. when he moved to Hendrick Motorsports. Why #88? Well, his DEI number was #8, Dale Jr. had a rabid fanbase, and a lot of people already had #8 merch and #8 tattoos. How to keep those people invested in Dale Jr.? Simple, make his new number two 8s, hence #88.
Thus, come 2017, Hendrick Motorsports has the #5 of Kasey Kahne, the #24 of Chase Elliott, the #48 of Jimmie Johnson, and the #88 of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Then everything started to change.
For 2018, Chase Elliott moved to the #9, taking the number most associated with his famous father, Bill Elliott. Bill had run the #9 at his own team from 1975-1981, then continued running it at Melling from 1982 to 1991, and then ran the #9 again at Evernham Motorsports in 2001, 2002, and 2003 as he spearheaded Dodge's return to NASCAR.
Chase was in the #9, but he took his #24 team with him. Hence my joke about the #9 really being the #24.
Meanwhile, Kasey Kahne dropped out of Hendrick due to chronic dehydration issues impacting his ability to race. Kahne's #5 team became the #24 team for rookie William Byron.
Also in 2018, Alex Bowman took over the #88 for Dale Jr.
Fast forward to 2021, and Hendrick Motorsports shuffles things around again.
Kyle Larson started the 2020 season win Chip Ganassi Racing, however, during the COVID-19 hiatus, Kyle Larson used a racial slur on a hot mic during an iRacing event. McDonalds, Credit One Bank, and Chevrolet dropped him that day. This left Chip Ganassi no choice but to fire Larson the next day.
Kyle Larson was highly rumored to replace Jimmie Johnson in the #48 for 2021, but after the n-bomb incident, sponsor Ally didn't want to touch him.
Nevertheless, Larson dominated in dirt racing in 2020, completed a racial sensitivity course, and made outreaches to black communities to apologize for his actions, including a visit to the George Floyd Memorial in Minneapolis.
All of this convinced Rick Hendrick that he should hire Kyle Larson after all, but he needed to shuffle things around to make it happen.
The flagship #5, Hendrick's original number, would return for the first time since 2017, with Kyle Larson running it, primarily sponsored by Hendrick Cars, but also Valvoline, Cincinnati Inc., and Tarlton. The team, however, would be the same as Jimmie Johnson's 2020 #48 team.
Alex Bowman's #88 team, however, would switch to the #48 plate and take on Ally as their sponsor.
Thus the #24 became the #9, the #5 became the #24, the #48 became the #5, and the #88 became the #48.
An awful lot for one team, huh?
Roush is thankfully a bit simpler.
The #6 is Roush's flagship car and has been ever since they were founded in 1988. Why the #6? Then sponsor Stroh's Light wanted a one-digit number to be instantly recognizable. Thus, Mark Martin's time with the #6 began.
Initially, Roush built around the #6 brand, with their second car being the #16 Family Channel Ford and them running the #60 Winn-Dixie car for Martin's Busch Series starts.
Their third car in in 1996 was the #99, which didn't really fit - other than the coincidental of 9 being 6 upside-down so #99 is kinda like two sixes, but Jack Roush says that was a coincidence. But Roush Racing went back to the sixes scheme in 1998 with the #26 car. They also bought the #97 John Deere Pontiac in 1997 and changed it over to a Ford for 1998, bringing it into the team for a five-car effort.
Roush had a couple of six car races in 1999 because Jack grew interested in Busch series racer Matt Kenseth, who was running a Chevrolet for Robbie Reiser. Jack didn't seem to mind too much, and by the time 2000 rolled around, he took Reiser, Kenseth, and their #17 car into the Cup series, running the DeWalt Ford.
Matt Kenseth won Roush's first Cup championship in 2003 with the DeWalt #17, and so in 2024, RFK Racing's two cars are the #6 and the #17.

Now for Spire Motorsports real quick.
The #7 car in NASCAR became famous due to owner-driver Alan Kulwicki, who in the late 80s and early 90s, insisted on doing things himself even as NASCAR was starting to move towards bigger, multi-car teams. Alan winning the championship himself in his own equipment in 1992 would inspire a slew of drivers to follow his lead in this era, but for Alan himself...well, he died in a plane crash on the way to Bristol in 1993.
He never got the chance to defend his title.
The #7 AK Racing team was taken over by Geoff Bodine in 1993 - 'member him from Hendrick? - and ran as Geoff Bodine Racing for awhile, before selling to Ultra Motorsports for 2000. Ultra Motorsports and the #7 car of Jimmy Spencer had precisely one notable moment to their name.
At the 2003 MBNA America 300 at Dover International Speedway, the #7 Sirius Satellite Radio Dodge was a lap down when the caution came out, becoming the first car to benefit from NASCAR's new beneficiary rule - implemented to stop drivers from racing back to the line after the caution flag came out - which led to commentator Benny Parsons dubbing him the lucky dog.
Sirius' logo at this point included a little dog.
So yeah, that's where the term "Lucky Dog" in NASCAR comes from, the more you know.
The #7 then went through Robby Gordon Motorsports for awhile, followed by Tommy Baldwin Racing - in which Danica Patrick made her final NASCAR start in the 2018 Daytona 500 - before winding up at Spire Motorsports for the 2021 season.
Corey LaJoie has run the #7 from 2021 to 2024, accomplishing fuck all, and will be replaced for the 2025 season. It is currently unknown who will replace him. Justin Haley has been linked to the ride, and he actually won Spire's only Cup series victory in only his third start at a rain-shortened 2021 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona.
Spire then built out their numbering scheme off the #7, with Carson Hocevar running the #77 and Zane Smith running the #71 - though he is due to be replaced by Michael McDowell for 2025.
So yeah, that's Hendrick, Roush, and Spire down. We've done #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, and #10 already, so next time we'll pick up with Joe Gibbs Racing and their #11 Toyota.

KEN’S FATAL CRASH - 17th AUGUST 1966
After a fantastic year of racing for Ken and his team including wins at Sebring and Daytona plus the race he could have won at Le Mans.
It was August 17th 1966 at the Riverside International Raceway in California. The Shelby American Crew were testing a Ford known as the J-Car. Ken was in the car and all was going well until the final lap on the final day of testing.
As he approached turn 9 which was also at the end of the lap, the car left the road and broke into two, bursting into flames in which Ken died instantly.
Ken son Peter was at the test. He got to the scene as fast as he could. Peter wanted to get him out of the car, but was informed by a member of the crew that he wasn’t in the car. He had been flung out and was lying in the dirt with his helmet next to him.
It has never been proven what happened with the accident. It seems the car had either break failure or the driveline had locked up.
Due to Ken’s death, Ford updated its safety program with a stronger roll cage and changes to prevent fire.

This aircraft was built in 1945 as the fourth and final in a series of 1/3 scale test prototypes models for the Northrop XB-35 flying Wing bombers.and was the grandfather of today's B-2 Stealth Bomber. The only surviving one left,  this aircraft was  75 years old in 2019 when it was lost in a fatal accident in Riverside California on April 22nd, 2019 after suffering a loss of control in flight.

Ostara/Spring Equinox Festival Part 3 It starts -> here
After all this action they got hungry. Arturo had prepared the meals for them. It's good to see them all together again. It's been a while. Let's hope the Therapy Game can help them out of their slump and Saiwa, Jack and Ji Ho can return back home to the others soon.

They gathered at the fire. Ji Ho looks so happy, his spell worked and they'd spend a great day together despite of their hardships.

But by looking at Jeb's face he felt that his Siren's Song was fading and it's time to part. And the way Jack looks at Kiyoshi made him think that the spell maybe hit Jack a bit too hard. Better they leave soon before he does anything stupid ö.ö They all seem to react different. He'll have to work on this.

After they cleaned up and cared for the horses and goats (and Kumo), they said goodbye by the riverside and Ji Ho and Vlad charged their bond before they leave for their homes.

Jack, Saiwa and Ji Ho south over the bridge to the Beach House and Vlad, Jeb and Kiyoshi back to their crappy/happy home in the opposite direction.
Ji Ho had hoped for a kiss but Vlad kept it short and left. Vlad knows that it would improve their relationship if he agreed to get physical with Ji Ho, but it just feels wrong for him. Tomorrow he will continue to test the Therapy Game. Let's hope there is another way for Ji Ho to learn how to love Vlad.

The Village Bridge Holiday Festival of Lights is a reoccurring holiday dash event hosted by @unovasrose. It is a flexible, open RP event meant to be done at your own pace, with no pressure to participate every day or even every week, and it extends a bit before and after Christmas and New Year's so those who are very busy during the holidays still have a chance to partake in the holiday fun. Additionally, the date constraints only apply to a few (optional) interactive events offered by the blog, so participants are more than welcome to continue any event-related threads even after the festival is officially concluded.
This year, the event will take place from December 15th, 2023 to January 5th, 2024.

The event is set up in a “choose your own adventure” format so your muse(s) can take part in any and all parts of the event they are interested in. The following amenities will be available:
Riverside Dance Party — The Village Bridge waterfront doubles as a dance floor open to all of those interested in grooving to dance-worthy holiday tunes. A DJ will be rockin’ around the clock and the Bridge Quartet will be providing live music every evening! If your muse is a performer and would like to be featured in the festival during impromptu open mic nights, send this blog an ask so they can be included in the lineup! If you write any posts of them performing, tag this blog so the performance can be reblogged onto the festival page for all to see!
Bridge Concession Stands — Enjoy mouth-watering holiday-themed treats from the concessions area!
Festival Games — Try your hand at winning an adorable poképlush and other great prizes. Test your aim by trying to knock off all the stacked MooMoo Milk bottles on the platform during MooMoo Milk Knock-Off or show off your strength by attempting to Ring the Bronzong. Better at hand-eye coordination? Try your best to score a winning shot in Holiday Hoop-as! Each muse will have one (1) chance to participate in each game and the results will be determined by the booth runners by rolling a d20.
Snowball Fights — Challenge your friends (or sworn frenemies?) to a snowball fight! Snowball fights will be 3 v. 3 (trainer + 2 pokémon), with the results determined via a dice system.
⭐ Christmas Lights Displays ⭐ (MAIN ATTRACTION) — The fields outside of Village Bridge are transformed into a winter wonderland filled with spectacular Christmas Lights arrangements spanning over three miles! Grab a cup of Sweet Heart Hot Cocoa and enjoy a magical stroll through the displays!
Route 12 Fire Pits — In the outskirts of town and along the path for the lights displays, festival attendees will come across many firepits where they can ward off the winter chill and roast some delicious Litwick S’mores!
Cozy Cabin Stays — Don't want to travel from a hotel the next town over? Book a stay in a rustic log cabin in the outskirts of Village Bridge! The cabins are fully furnished for a comfortable stay. Bookings are reserved for festival attendees.
Fireworks Displays — A spectacular fireworks display will take place on December 31st at midnight. Gather up your friends or cozy up with your sweetheart to bring in the new year with a bang! Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or fire-type Pokémon to help stay warm.
Custom sentence starters and short opens featuring festival workers will be provided for each of the areas to assist in interactions, but don’t be afraid to come up with your own scenarios!
The event is open to everyone with a Pokémon muse or a Pokémon verse. There is no need to register in order to take part. Just use the tag #vbholidayfestival2023 in your festival posts and have at it!

This is my cat Hank. He's 9 years old and I love him like the stars.

Hank was diagnosed with lymphoma this week. It took about a month of blood tests, ultrasounds, a cytology, and an oncology visit.

I adopted Hank when I was in the middle of a mental health crisis, and I just needed something to give me a reason to be here. I drove from Los Angeles to Riverside CA because I had seen a gorgeous long-haired lilac pointed kitten that was going to be at a rescue event. By the time I got to the event, that kitten had already been adopted, but I stuck around to look at the others. My sister had come out to help me choose a kitten, and she was actually the one who picked up Hank. He crawled all over my sister and I and sat on my shoulder purring, and that's when I decided to take him home.

My sister is also the one who named him. We were both watching The Vlogbrothers together, and she named him Hank because he was curious, friendly, and loved "talking". He hates being alone, and you can always find him in a five foot radius of me or mom.

Hank has seen me through a severe mental health crisis, my mother's stroke, two years of treatment for an autoimmune disorder that wrecked my body, the worst of the pandemic, and my bother's suicide. He means the world to me. The fact that a bunch of imaginary numbers in a computer somewhere can determine whether he even gets a CHANCE to beat this cancer is a horrific, awful thing that is tearing my heart apart. I can't do this alone.

An Iron Box - A Lantern in the Rain
I really don’t know if I did this chapter justice or not. It’s the big one some of you have been waiting nearly a year for. 
Let me know if you spot any mistakes or weird, clunky sentences! I’ve proof read this without having much sleep.

I felt the bullet tear through my hood, but it was insignificant. The fire, the game, even that idiot waving around his submachine gun… Everything was meaningless. Her breath, rapid and warm, I could feel it against my neck. I was alive. We both were. 
Seconds passed, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. For the first time in a long time, my heart was pounding. The sensation was distinctly uncomfortable, but it was remedied by one thing. Her head was tucked under my chin, my fingers digging into her shoulders - a closeness that would have annoyed me in the past. In this moment, it no longer bothered me. Instead, I could feel the heat of her, I could feel that overwhelming emptiness drifting into the recesses of the room. 
‘Chishiya?’ 
What am I doing?
I backed away, assessing her for any injuries. She was chewing on her lower lip, watching the flames spreading in the corners of the lobby, clearly unharmed. And aside from a slight sting in my side where my wound hadn’t quite fully healed, so was I. 
Ch, I can’t say the same for my hoodie. 
‘I need to go down there,’ (name) said, coughing a little from the smoke. ‘I need to help them, or at the very least, apologise to Usagi and Arisu for what we did. And I need you not to stop me again.’ 
You’re really going to ignore my warnings?
So be it. Realistically, I couldn’t keep her here forever, even if the thought was tempting, just out of spite. But that didn’t mean I was done with her yet. ‘Meet me by the river afterwards,’ I told her. ‘And use your head, stay away from Niragi.’ 
Shoving my hands into my pockets, I turned the other way, heading down the hall in the direction of the staircase to the floor above. I still had unfinished business, after all. 
‘Where are you going?’ 
I glanced back. How self-righteous of her to be worried about me now, after everything she’d said. ‘There’s something I need.’ 
You did ask for proof…
Taking care to avoid pools of black smoke, I jogged up the stairs. It would be rather inconvenient to die from asphyxiation now, of all times. Navigating the hallways upstairs was difficult through the haze, but following the gold lettering on the doors, I managed to uncover my room behind a wall of black smoke. 
I tested the handle. It was cool, and so I slipped inside. Aside from a thin strip of black smoke curling under the closed door, and the moonlight that bathed the room, it was more or less exactly as I’d left it. I didn’t waste any time, moving straight to the desk - more specifically, the second drawer down.
I slipped my hand inside, feeling around until my fingers closed on the little black box that I’d intentionally left in here earlier. It was rather annoying how things had turned out. I could have saved myself a hell of a lot of time and effort if I had just taken it with me earlier. The box sat open in my palm, and the tiny golden-green sun beamed at me, glistening like a lantern in the darkness. 
I didn’t even know why I was bothering. 
All this trouble for a woman. I hope you’re grateful. 
A calm female voice sounded from inside my pocket, breaking the silence.   
‘GAME CLEAR - CONGRATULATIONS’
I pulled out the phone, staring at the screen. They must have only just burned Momoka’s body in the fire of judgement. It took them long enough. A game like this really didn’t need quite so much fuss. But more importantly… 
The riverside. 
Sliding the black box into my pocket, I doubled back the way I came. I had to hold my sleeve over my mouth and nose to keep the smoke at bay. It didn’t do much, but it was enough to keep from coughing as I backtracked down the stairs, avoiding the balcony areas where the flames were now licking the carpets and walls, crackling with an untamed ferocity. As I headed back down the final hallway on the ground floor, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten something. 
The pistol. 
It was still in the third drawer back in my room. But no matter. It was too late to go back and get it now. And besides, I could just come back once the flames had died. I exited the hallway, crossing the empty lobby. 
Well, it was almost empty. 
Oh? How sneaky. 
In the centre of the room was a small white table, as expected, right in the middle lay a single playing card. The Ten of Hearts. I picked it up, satisfied that the last numbered card was finally in my grasp. But what did this mean? The timing of the Witch Hunt, the last of the numbered cards, the switching of the generators, even the fact that this table had been laid out so inconspicuously…
I thought back to my many conversations with (name). How, just like God, there was no way to prove whether or not Hatter’s theory was correct without having collected the numbered cards first. However, because of that, we also couldn’t prove that it was incorrect, either. But now things had changed. It was simply a matter of waiting. Would the numbered games continue, or would something different occur?
‘You’re quite persistent too.’ 
Kuina appeared at my side. The fire threw shadows over her features. Despite how she’d stumbled into the lobby earlier alongside An, she seemed to have recovered well. 
‘I started to think that it’s pointless to collect all the playing cards,’ I said. 
She folded her arms. ‘What’s with that?’  
‘But now,’ I explained, ‘we’ve got everything except for the face cards. I wonder what the gamemasters want us to see?’ 
‘Who knows? I guess we’ll find out soon anyway.’ She nodded towards the exit. ‘For now, let’s just get out of this place before we burn alive, yeah?’
She ushered me out of the hotel, stepping around the mangled remains of players still sprawled across the courtyard. At the side of the building, the fire of judgement glowed with an entanglement of limbs, heads, faces permanently etched in fear. 
What a mess, I thought. But it was bound to happen eventually, with or without the Witch Hunt. 
We exited through small path at the side of the hotel. Kuina scanned the area in search of something, or someone. 
‘Where is she?’ 
‘Who?’ 
She glared daggers at me. ‘Don’t give me that, you know who.’ 
I stared out in the vague direction of the riverside. ‘She’s waiting for me,’ I said. ‘You should find somewhere for us to lie low for a while.’ 
Kuina pursed her lips. ‘Bold of you to assume I’m going with you.’ 
I raised a brow. She was wasting my time. ‘If you weren’t, you would have left with the others instead of walking back into a burning building to find me.’ 
She sniffed and nodded. ‘Touche. You got me there. But you’ve got to promise to bring her with you. I’ll set up camp in my uncle’s furniture store. You know, the one near the arcade where we had that game once?’ 
A furniture store? It’d do rather nicely. It would have seats, somewhere to sleep, a staff kitchen, a toilet, shelter. 
‘Fine. I’ll meet you there soon.’ 
Kuina’s eyes narrowed. ‘We’ll meet you there. We. Honestly Chishiya, if you ditch her after all this, you’re dead to me. Capiche?’ 
The threat didn’t really come down to much, but she shook a fist to make her point clear, then strolled off into the darkness of the city. I watched her leave for a moment, before directing my attention to the riverside. 
I walked back around the side of the hotel until the river came into view. The water was calm, waves glittering gold and white under the flames and the moonlight. The pebble bank led down towards the water’s edge where a familiar figure was sitting, head against her knees and arms wrapped around her head. She was shivering. I touched the deck of cards in my left pocket, trying to ignore the weight of the tiny box in my right one. 
‘Crying again?’ 
She flinched, raising her head. When she spotted me, her eyes filled with something I couldn’t name.I stopped several feet from her. It would be best to keep at least some distance, for now. 
‘You don’t have much faith in me,’ I said, drawing the Ten of Hearts from the top of the deck and pulling it out to show her. 
Her face fell. ‘You’re right,’ she said. ‘I don’t have much faith in you. All you’ve done is lie to me.’ 
‘Hmm…’ I glanced back at the burning structure behind us. From this distance, I could see the rooftop where we had been standing, less than two hours ago. ‘That’s not strictly true.’ 
Her eyes suddenly widened, as if a realisation had struck her. ‘Kuina. Is she?’ 
‘She’s fine.’ 
‘That’s good to hear.’ She exhaled softly. I could almost envision her thought process, the question that lay unspoken on her lips until… ‘Did you tell her to become friends with me, for your plan?’ 
Not in quite so many words.
‘At the very beginning, when I asked her to take you some food, she offered to become your friend,’ I said. There was no point in lying anymore. ‘But that was before she met you. She asked me to change the plan to keep you out of it.’ 
‘So that’s why you decided to switch from me to Arisu,’ she replied, visibly disappointed. 
‘Kuina had nothing to do with it. I changed my mind for my own reasons.’ 
Surely, I made that clear earlier, no?
She shook her head grimly, still reluctant to accept the truth. Such a stubborn girl. ‘I already told you back then,’ she said. ‘I don’t know what’s real and what’s not, so I can’t believe in anything you say anymore.’ 
Aside from one loophole… 
‘You also mentioned proof.’ My fingertips brushed the black box in my pocket. 
‘Only because you can’t prove it.’ 
‘Actually, you’re wrong.’ I took out the tiny black box and held it in my palm, that small green lantern, tucked away inside. And that poem of hers. The lines haunted me even now, ringing through my mind like a train whistle. 
‘Do I dare disturb the universe?’
‘What are you doing?’ She was squinting, trying to see what was in my hand. 
‘In a minute there is time for decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.’
I smiled, selecting my words carefully. ‘I’m forcing the moment to its crisis.’ 
Her whole body froze, eyes wide as she realised that yes, I had remembered the words she recited back in that cold, blue pharmacy as I bandaged her arm. Yes, I have read the poem in its entirety. And yes, I hated it just as much as I thought I would.
Then her eyes lowered to the small black box. I tossed it to her, and she caught it with both hands. I could see her fingers trembling as she opened it up. Her lips parted, and she stared intently at the tiny ring. No doubt she knew the name of the mysterious stone along with its meaning. I didn’t care about these things, but I could see a light in her eyes, radiating that warmth and fascination that had always drawn me to her - moth to flame.
‘I was in a game when I saw it,’ I said, watching the gentle flow of the river. ‘The Eight of Diamonds. At the time, I didn’t know why I took it.’ 
From the corner of my eye, I could see her crying silently. As always. Comfort had never been my forte - it was a performance I reserved for relatives of sick children in the hospital bays. But something about her tears irked me. 
‘This isn’t fair.’ Her voice was slightly hoarse from the smoke. ‘You can’t just do this after everything. You can’t just expect things to be okay now.’ 
‘I know.’ 
It probably never will be. 
‘And you can’t just pretend like none of it ever happened.’ 
‘I know that too.’ 
And then she took a step forward. Her arms wrapped around me tightly, fingers knotting in the back of my hoodie. I froze on instinct. She was close, far too close, and I was torn between pushing her away and basking in the heat of her body, even if it burned me. But all at once, that pressure in my chest, the vast emptiness that I had grown so accustomed to, began to drain away. The iron box had washed ashore, finally freed from the ocean’s depths. 
‘You…’ she mumbled into my hoodie. ‘I… I hate you so much.’ 
Ch… as if. 
I placed my hand on top of her head. Her hair was soft. ‘No, you don’t.’ 
I expected her to pull away, but she didn’t. Her fingers were still laced in my clothes, clutching me tightly to her, even as a soft rain began to fall around us. To my surprise, I realised that I no longer minded the proximity. 
Since when did I begin to feel this way? 
However, she was still crying, and I wasn’t sure how to make her stop. Finally, I felt her fingers loosen and she slipped away, moving back a few paces as she placed the ring on her finger and threw the box into the river. 
I noted that she had slid the ring onto her right hand. All this poetry talk…if I wasn’t careful she would come to the wrong conclusion. Even if what I had read was a translation, I wasn’t blind to the deeper meaning of that poem.
‘Before you get the wrong idea, this isn’t a—‘
‘I understand,’ she cut in, using her sleeve to wipe the rain from her face and dry her tears. ‘I don’t care about any of that. Especially not while we’re still in this world. Just stay with me for a while. That’s all I want.’ 
Very well. 
If that’s what she wanted. 
Suddenly, she frowned and patted her pocket. Or at least, what looked like a large lump in her pocket. Then she began to tug whatever was inside free, revealing that battered looking copy of Wuthering Heights which she had obviously curled up into a roll to force it to fit in such a small space. I couldn’t help but raise a brow. Why on earth she would bring that book with her was beyond even my comprehension. Shielding the pages from the rain with one hand, she flicked through it and held it open before me, her thumb marking a page. 
‘Of all the things to save,’ I muttered. 
She tapped her thumb on what was an underlined quote of text. ‘I’ve been meaning to ask you about this for ages. You’ve underlined it, but I can’t seem to translate it.’ 
Obviously, I had no idea what she was talking about. She must have wrongly assumed I’d left her a little message just for fun, when in actuality it was whoever owned this book last. But I didn’t tell her that just yet. I’d already crushed her dreams once tonight. Perhaps twice was a little too much, even for me. 
I took the book and skim-read the quotation. ‘“I’m tired of being enclosed here. I’m wearying to escape into that glorious world, and to be always there; not seeing it dimly through tears, and yearning for it through the walls of an aching heart; but really with it, and in it”’ 
What a stupid book. Out of all the lines to choose. 
It just had to be one that simplified her - a mirror image of her life before the Borderlands, and of course, her yearning to separate herself from her father. I closed the book and passed it back to her. ‘I didn’t underline that.’ 
‘You didn’t?’ She appeared puzzled. ‘Why was it highlighted then?’ 
I shrugged. ‘It was used when I found it. It probably belonged to a student at some point.’ 
‘Oh…’ 
There was a funny kind of sadness in her expression, like she had been expecting something far more grandiose when in actuality, it was nothing more than a coincidence. I had told her so many times to get her head out of the clouds - that naivety of hers would get her killed. 
‘Chishiya,’ she whispered, twiddling with the ring on her finger. ‘I don’t want to be afraid of things anymore. I don’t want to be afraid of you either.’ 
Silly girl. The solution was simple. 
‘Then don’t be.’ 
Before I knew it, she closed the space between us, pressing her lips to mine. I stiffened, unsure of how to react, but then I felt it. The vast pressure in my chest eased slightly, like an anchor had lifted, and I raised my hand to the back of her head, threading my fingers through her damp hair. Her lips were wet with rain, and I could feel her shivering in the cold. 
Then too suddenly, she stepped away, and the pressure in my chest deepened once more. I didn’t know what to say, and she remained silent. The only sound was the patter of raindrops against the river, and the water gently spilling over the pebble bank. 
‘Let’s go,’ I said. ‘Kuina is waiting for us.’ 
She touched the ring on her finger. ‘Okay.’
