Mental Reset Day (8/25/24)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, as much as I was looking forward to today, it didn't go how I planned. I was awoken at or before 3:30 this morning because I was hurting and unfortunately, I wasn't able to get back to sleep until a little after 5. Going to bed late is one thing, but waking up so early is another, and I'm never able to catch up on my sleep if I awoke so early. I was far too tired to want to follow my schedule for my mental reset day, so a lot of it was substituted for sleep, and even then, I wasn't refreshed.
I'm still much too wiped out to make a big post about it, so I'm just going to say my favorite thing about the day was reading (I didn't get in as much as I wanted to since I was so tired, but I'm pleased with what I managed). My new book is The Girl in the Ice by Robert Bryndza. It's good so far, but not as good as the one from last week. It's the first in the series, and I can already tell I won't be reading any further works. I just love the anticipation of picking out a new book :-) My other favorite part (which isn't typical for my mental reset day) was buying the piano version of You Say by Lauren Daigle. I listen to it all the time on my laptop, but she's got such a low voice that I can't match. I'm really wanting to sing it when promoting my book, so I was getting kind of bummed. But I found the piano version and transposed it until I found a key in which I could sing it and really excited with how it's going! :-)
My least favorite parts were:
*My movie - I chose Choose or Die on Netflix. I'd tried to watch it before (not even lasting 20 minutes) and after trying again I remembered why! I always try to pick two movies, but the other one was The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg, and I'm not interested in watching it anymore. I wasn't in the mood to pick out another movie, so I just laid in bed and either slept or listened to background noise on my laptop
*Reading The Diary of a Young Girl. I've always been kind of bummed that I wasn't required to read her book in school. We had to read Frankenstein my senior year, but I think that was it. Even though I'm not a fan of general history, I'm a fan of certain parts of history - the Titanic, Anastasia, tales from WW2, Anne Frank . . . just stuff like that. I've got two movies of Anne Frank, which I enjoy, and I can't wait to watch My Best Friend Anne Frank on Netflix - even if it's not in English. I typically stay away from foreign films, but I've been looking forward to watching it for a while. I've always wanted to read Anne Frank's diary, but unfortunately, I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. It's still really good, of course, but I would rather watch the full movie rather than read the book.
Other than that, there's not really much else to report. I'm looking forward to next week when I'll hopefully be a lot more awake and be able to enjoy my mental reset day :-)

REVIEW
The Lost Victim by Robert Bryndza
Kate Marshall Thriller #5
Another cold case or Kate and Triston to solve – if they can? What happened to Janey Macklin and why wasn’t her body ever found?
What I liked:
* Kate: once on the police force, taught forensics at a university, tenacious, utilizes investigative techniques wisely, organized, methodical, intuitive, focused, intriguing
* Tristan: intense, focused, good brother, capable, great investigative skills, interesting character that I would like to learn more about
* Jake: Kate’s son, university graduate, on break from internship in USA, brought Olivia home for the holidays, son of a serial killer, proposes an option to Kate & Tristan that may improve their financial stability
* The prologue that set the stage for the cold case
* The tidbits about the main characters gleaned though not many were shared in this book
* Police procedural elements
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The tie-in to Peter Conway and his impact on more than one character in this book – hoping his part in future books will be minimal
* That all of the loose ends were tied up by the end of the story and there was closure for Janey’s family
* Wondering what the next book will be about
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* The evil some of the characters were willing to do and the impact it had on more than one in the story
* Thinking about choices made and what would have happened if a different choice had been made
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
BLURB
When school girl Janey Macklin disappeared from the seedy side of London in 1988, her case went cold, with no body and no witnesses. Now, thirty years later, private detective Kate Marshall has been approached by a true crime podcast producer with an intriguing question they need her help answering: What if Janey was killed by Peter Conway, the notorious Nine Elms Cannibal? The contract would be the most lucrative of Kate’s career, but it comes with a price of its own, dredging up a sordid, complicated past that she would sooner forget . . . one that the paparazzi are determined to keep in the headlines. As Kate and her partner, Tristan, scour King’s Cross for clues, no two leads seem to point in the same direction. The last person to see Janey alive has already been tried, convicted, and then acquitted of her murder, Peter Conway is in poor health and fading fast, and the line between their clients and their suspects is blurring with each new revelation about the case. With little to work from, can Tristan and Kate wade through clandestine phone calls, decades-old secrets, and deteriorating DNA evidence to solve Janey’s murder, or will she remain one of London’s countless missing persons, forever lost to time? Can be read as a stand-alone.

The Night Stalker by Robert Bryndza (Detective Erika Foster #2)
Tumblr media
Title: The Night Stalker Author: Robert Bryndza Series: Detective Erika Foster #2 Number of Pages: 378 Genre:  Murder Thrillers Publisher: Grand Central Publishing Date of Original Publication: October 2, 2018 ISBN: 78-1538730249
I think this will be the 2nd to last book that I will finish for 2024. I had to read the first book, The Girl in the Ice, of this series for my local mystery book club. Naturally I can’t neglect to finish out a series, so here I go. So far he has 8 books. The Night Stalker is book 2.
The Night Stalker is book 2 of the Detective Erika Foster series by Robert Bryndza and it is vastly different from book 1. The main character is an insubordinate widowed DCI in London, named Erika Foster.  In book one the storyline had multiple characters and you weren’t given the murderer. In book two the murderer was known and the book toggles between them and Erika’s perspective to show why the murderer committed the murders that she did.
I like Bryndza’s writing style as it’s easy going and flows nicely. Erika is a likeable character and Bryndza brought back other police mates from the first book to keep the setting. The murders were interesting and there was quite a bit of action in the book that made sure that there weren’t dull spots.
There wasn’t much that I didn’t like about this book.  Sometimes Erika can be a little discreditable as a police woman. Realistically speaking, some of her insubordinate actions would get her fired in the real world. There is a stinger at the end that makes me hope in book three she sets it straight.  But that will be a ways down the line of my To Read list unfortunately…
★★★★ I would recommend this series, obviously start with book one, Girl in the Ice first.

(more…)

Book Review - Dark Water by Robert Bryndza
Tumblr media
A haunting, thrilling mystery that kept me hooked from page one. This was so good that it reminded me of some of my favorite Law and Order SVU episodes from the early seasons. DCI Erika Foster had the perfect blend of heart and determination, keeping the investigation going no matter what blocks came up in her way, and finding the truth on this cold case where others failed too before. I was so sure that one of the suspects was the true murderer all along, and the reveal of who actually done away with the victim  took me by surprise but connected things very nicely.

Get to know me (tag game)
I was tagged by the ever wonderful @winterandwords thanks so much! I really like the look of this one, and your answers were so good!
A scent you love?
I have a teddy called Lamby (he's a lamb) that can go in a microwave to heat up the little bead things in his tummy, and they smell like lavender. Gorgeous smell, and he's way less faffy than a hot water bottle!
What's something you're looking forward to this week?
My life is incredibly boring and I have nothing to look forward to except maybe doing some writing. I have a holiday at the end of the month (british coast for a wedding) but that's just making me really stressed.
What's a book you're currently reading?
For someone who proclaims about being a writer, I don't get a lot of reading in. I'm trying to change. I promise. The last book I was reading was The Night Stalker by Robert Bryndza (re-reading the series because he released another book for it)
What's a game you're currently playing?
I have a few games that I play on the regular: The Sims 4 (currently doing another 100 baby challenge which feels a whole lot harder now they added the infant lifestage), Final Fantasy 14 (with my beloved dragon girl), Diablo 4 (skelington army, babyyy), and Dead by Daylight (so many handsome boys and creetchurs).
What's the most recent movie you watched?
The Suicide Squad (2021). Kept expecting a Galactic Spongebob to show up (iykyk).
Are you watching anything on TV or listening to any shows?
I'm finally watching Stranger Things and I'm already at Season 3. Not as scary as I thought it was gonna be, but I guess I would've been scared of Demogorgon if I hadn't played him in DbD?? Maybe.
Favourite season?
AUTUMN. Need I say more?
Crispy leaves, hot chocolate, massive jumpers. Ignoring halloween (and all the kids) and then buying discounted chocolates and sweets the next day.
What's something you've learned recently?
This wasn't super recent but I learned right here on tumblr dot com that HRT testosterone can cause patients to just...create more blood than they need. Kinda terrifying.
Have you had any water lately?
I'm drinking some right now :)
Very gently tagging: @cabbojage ; @mundanemoongirl ; @inkcurlsandknives & @sparrowrising , and an open tag for anyone else!

REVIEW
Fear The Silence by Robert Bryndza
This book was more difficult for me to get into, and I am not sure why. I had trouble relating to Maggie’s character and the way she behaved before and after her husband died. As I was not sure I wanted to continue after she reached Croatia, I read the ending, some from the middle, and decided that though well written, this book was not for me – or – not for me at this time. I have had that happen before with books and have gone back to read them later and found them riveting. That said, I did have to suspend belief as I read a fewl of the scenes. Secrets hidden and how they were found, the idea that one person would have so much power and be able to get away with so many evil and illegal things, that if this evil person could get away with so much…that person could be brought down so easily later. And…that is just a hint without giving away secrets the author put great effort into writing.
I have loved other books in series I have read by this author and am hoping that future books I read by him, and I will read his work again, will not only grab me as this one did in the beginning, but also hold me in gripping thrall till I finish.
Did I enjoy this book? Not as much as other books by this author
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

“Do you believe Will took his own life?” The question echoed off the white tiles in the hospital’s cold, cavernous morgue, and I studied my husband in peaceful repose. I leaned down and put my forehead against his. Silent tears ran down my cheeks. They felt hot, and he felt so cold. It was five days since his death, and my grief felt heavy, like a vast, dark mass pushing down on me. When Maggie’s husband, Will, is shot dead in their London home, she thinks he is the victim of a burglary until the police tell her the shocking news that Will was the one who pulled the trigger. Maggie is consumed with grief and questions. Will wasn’t suicidal and had so much to live for. After the funeral, Maggie travels to their holiday home on a small Croatian island to escape London. She finds a disturbing letter written by Will, containing clues to a dark secret. As Maggie puts the pieces together, she discovers Will’s death is connected to someone from his past… Someone who will go to extreme lengths to keep Maggie silent. Three can keep a secret... If two of them are dead. The international multi-million bestselling author of The Girl in the Ice is back with his first stand-alone thriller, a heart-racing, hold-your-breath read that will keep you hooked until the very last page.

The Girl in the Ice - Robert Bryndza
Tumblr media
Title: The Girl in the Ice Author: Robert Bryndza Series: Detective Erika Foster #1 Number of Pages: 393 Genre: Serial Killer Thriller / Crime Thriller Publisher: Bookouture Date of Original Publication: February 12, 2016 ISBN: 153871342X
Not doing good for March. Slow start. Been busy. Hopefully going to push a second one in for the month. This one was required for book club. It was actually a good book. Bummed I started a new series though. I always have to finish them.
This one is about a disgraced female detective who comes back to the force with a special murder to solve. She faces backlash over a previous mess up and has to fight to earn her respect back in the industry.
This was an easy read and very entertaining. Did not get bored at any point of the book. Most of the characters are likeable and the storyline moved smoothly.
She’s not a very strong female character. She has more flaws than strengths and gets a little more credit than she deserves at the end. This is the first of the series so I will read book two and hope she gains some confidence and character development in the next one.
★★★★ I would recommend this one to read.
