That was generous wording on her behalf. Arthur picked at the blood on his hands, then moved to the blood under his fingertips, and then, blood gone, onto the raw pink skin beneath. It stung more with each tug. He saw Alexei every time he blinked.

Gonna dig into my notes for the lading lady of my unnamed paranormal romance thingy.

Age: 21-22

Appearance: Young, around average height, stocky build with strong shoulders, and thick thighs. Shoulder length wave, dyed black, faded ends, green eyes. Wears glasses, prefers darker clothing varying from practical and comfortable to standard rock girl fare: boots, jeans, band shirt and jacket.

Occupation: Retail at a Outdoor and Hunting Store. (long story)

Family Members: Dad: Stephen, tragically and very recently deceased. (right in front of her). Mum: Alice. Alive but estranged but currently taking her daughter in. Also has secretive reasons for leaving that are plot/worldbuilding related. Paternal Uncle: Bazza (Benjamin), an absolute rough-nut of a human. Handles pest control on farms and shears sheep, helps manage livestock Kind of a nomad. Maternal Grandmother: Linda. Kat doesn't remember her Grandmother well or fondly. Might have something to do with that boatload of trauma.

Pets: Crocbait, knowns as Croc, Crocca, or "Absolute mongrel". Service dog for panic attacks, anxiety and PTSD and the like. Is a mutt, seems to be some combination of Blue Heeler (aussie cattle dog) and Labrador mix. The result is an energetic, friendly but fiercely protective companion that knows how to be adorable on demand.

Best friend: Back in Aus: Rachel - Roommate and bestie, athletic playing Netball on the weekends, degree in business and working at a call center to make ends meet. Taught Kat crotchet and his a small side business making crochet stuffies. In the US: Alex: Very neurodivergent, transman and just a practical nerd. Shoots for fun/hunting. Introvert, but sees a fellow outsider in Kat and offers the kind of friendship they wished they had. Strong problem solver and a stable rock.

Describe his/her room: More of a guest bedroom with en-suite upgraded. At one point her Mum hope she'd visit and use it so there's still some younger vibes, a few of Kat's favourite toys untouched for years and pale colours. Kat's touch is limited with darker bed spreads, personal photos and a books. It's early days yet and she isn't sure how long she's staying around.

Way of Speaking: Wry sarcasm, and quick wit, casual and slag filed until she's pissed off then it gets precise and impersonal and a little condescending. If it suddenly starts raining hard, she's likely to ask "Think it'll rain?" while getting soaking wet.

Physical characteristics (posture, gestures, attitude): Good posture, stims by rubbing her hands, along a scar from arrow fletching on her right hand. Jiggles her leg, bites her lip when anxious. Facial expressions tend to be subtle when she's not feeling something intense. Exudes physical confidence, holds herself upright, head high and a still developing "dont fuck with me" aura. Stares unintentionally. has the ADHD postural sway, and bumps into things a lot.

Items in his/her pockets or backpack or purse: Clicky card stim, treats for Crocbait, minipen and notepad, phone, earbuds, ear plugs, some kind of snack. Usually a book to read.

Hobbies: Reading, so much reading, fiction and non fiction. Archery, with the occasional bit of pest hunting back home. Games but just the cosy ones. Crochet. Woodworking.

Favorite sports: Archery, martial arts (tae kwon do and juitsu). Loves HEMA but hasnt had the chance (or money) to try it.

Talents, abilities, or powers: Scary good instinctive archer, pretty decent hunter. Fast reader, strong memory for information, facts and semi eidetic memory (visual memory which helps with her poor working memory). Fantastically calm in a crisis (just brace for the meltdown after).

Relationships (how he/she is with other people): Shy and cautious at first but friendly. Uses humour as a buffer, and presents herself as easy going and calm. You know you're getting close when you start seeing the dryer sarcasm, the grumpy moods and she drops the "just like everyone else" mask that can and has creeped people out. With her trusted people, she lets her neurodivergence fly and is a weird, somewhat temperamental nerd dealing with a lot of guilt, grief, and suicidal ideation.

Fears: Deep running water, car accidents as the passenger, large "trucks/utes". Flooded roads. Meltdowns in public.

Faults: Reactive and temperamental. Her well read, well learned background lends to arrogance and condescension. She's working on both. Overly independent to the point of self harm, and a little too self deprecating.

Good points: Passionate, compassionate and genuinely kind. Strong believer that everyone has their strengths, that smarts is more than academics, and is generally warm, safe and protective of her people. Likes to uplift over tearing down.

From this, it could be determined that the Cluster is aware of itself enough to distinguish a difference between themselves and Humans.

Later, a response came to my earlier question.

“Didn’t. Just tried reflections.”

Maybe “reflections” in this case refer to bouncing back signals? I can imagine the ability to do so would be essential for a being whose communication is based off of radio signals in the first place. Confirmation and so on.

The Cluster seems to avoid first-person pronouns. Maybe the difference between “I” and “We” in English trips them up?

I was about twelve when I confessed to my Uncle Jack that I’d been skipping my grammar work to go hang out with the Kelly family. Of course, like anyone reasonable, he told me in no uncertain terms that it was bad to skip the work I had for the day because it would pile up and all that, but he helped me work out how much work I’d have to do every day before the Summer Solstice—which is when my mom would call a weeklong school work break, for the holiday. Being homeschooled was kinda weird, retrospectively. At least the way my mom did it. I knew the Kelly family joined a bunch of homeschooling groups that the kids could study with while the adults were out of town, but my mom never really trusted them. She never really trusted anyone, now that I think about it. Compared to everyone else in her life, I knew basically everything she’d be willing to give up. Man, I missed her.

“Yeah, I just didn’t expect you to, y’know, find me. How did you even do that?”

“I have my ways,” she smiled pleasantly. “Can I come in? Shit’s hot.”

He blinked, stepping to the side to allow her entrance. “Sure.”

He got the feeling that Jolene entered where she pleased, no matter the level of permission she had been given. She yanked off her hat, hair falling reluctantly down her back, and fell onto the couch with a content sigh.

I stumbled to the transparent wall, and brushed it gently with my elbow. Sure felt like glass.

…Fuck, it was glass. You can't break out of glass with Faren. It doesn't conduct. I bashed the side of my head into the glass. A loud, perfectly tuned bong! filled the room, with no further result.

I was tagged by my amazing writeblr pal @scribe-of-stories! Read their post here, because Fleshtown sounds as fascinating as it does horrifying and I can't wait to read it someday! Also, I LOVED their writing advice for the last question. Definitely check it out!

I think I'm going to focus on 2 WIPs for this tag. My (STILL untitled) 90s rock band novel--click the tag to see more of what I've posted about that--and a dark marauders era fanfiction I recently started working on.

What is the main Lesson of your story? And why did you choose it? For my novel, I'd say the main lesson is that blood isn't a prerequisite for family. And that when you've found them you know... because together you can overcome any obstacle and rise to the top against all odds, and because when you truly see someone as family you love them despite their flaws and the mistakes they make. For the fic, I'll be honest, I haven't thought much about it yet. It's VERY new. All I was thinking was "DARK JEGULUS DARK JEGULUS" and... vibes? So, yeah. I'm a mess. But if I had to think about it I'd probably say it's that most bad choices are redeemable if you're willing to put in the work to change.

What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding? NOVEL: Oooh, this is a good one. I took inspiration from other works like Almost Famous and Daisy Jones and the Six for the rockstar vibes, and High School (the Tegan and Sara memoir) for the 90s vibes. I also wanted the general atmosphere to be very moody, so I took advantage of the setting (Seattle) and used the weather to manipulate that, which feels very Twilight if I'm being 100% honest. FIC: Well, I mean, that's fairly obvious. I took inspiration from the original HP source material. I also wanted to give it a very dystopian worst-case-scenario feel, so for that I took inspiration from another great fic I've been reading called As the Worm Moon Dies. Highly recommend it!

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person? NOVEL: This project has multiple MCs, so I'll focus on my boy Jamie. Jamie's goals are interesting because while most of the others in the band are looking to make it big and be super famous, all Jamie wants is to play music with his friends for the rest of his life. Also, he DESPERATELY wants to sort out his feelings for River and live an authentic life by his side. As for me, I'd say my goal is to show people that growth isn't necessarily lateral, and either is forgiveness. But no matter how bad things can get, as long as you're willing to put in the work and lean on your people for support, almost anything can be overcome. FIC: Regulus is just trying to survive, man. He's going through it. He's also trying to live with the choices he's made and (though he doesn't consciously know it yet) find ways to make up for them. Meanwhile, James is quite literally trying to save the world. Which is very him. He's also trying to overcome the cognitive dissonance he's experiencing when it comes to aligning his feelings for Regulus with his own personal goals and values. I don't know what I want as the writer yet, my dudes. Like I said, right now I'm just here for the vibes and the angst.

How many chapters is your story going to have? Unknown for both WIPs. Although my novel is currently up over 40 which I worry is too many. Mind you, it's still in the first draft stage so that will likely change as I cut and edit.

Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it? I'm HOPING my novel will be picked up by my pals at NineStar, and the fic will be up on Ao3 when it's ready!

When and why did you start writing? I started writing when I was 9 or 10, when I would make kids books (illustrations and all, haha) for my baby brother. All I had was printer paper, crayola markers and a dream baybeeee. Then I started writing short stories for youth magazines and contests, then in high school I moved onto fanfiction, and so on. As for why... I don't really know. It has always just felt natural to me. I've always known I was going to be a writer. It's what I feel best doing. I could never give it up.

Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of writeblr? What other writers of tumblr do you follow? I don't know how to follow Scribe's advice because it was just so damn good. So everything they said! I'd also like to add that there's nothing wrong with working at your own pace. As a neurodivergent author who goes months at a time without writing a single word only to suddenly and without warning embark on a three-week writing hyperfixation where I block out absolutely everything and everyone around me, I'm here to tell you that it's FINE. It's fine to take breaks, it's fine to take ten years or ten weeks to write a novel, the important thing is that you're writing it. Like Scribe said, don't let other people tell you how YOUR process should go. Deadlines are one thing, but all you can do is your best. What that looks like to one person may look completely different to you, and that's FINE. <3 Oooh shoutouts! I love shoutouts! An itch of spite tickled the back of Tyrell’s mind as he glared at the hot stones.

‘I’ll show him just how easy it is to go out by myself. I’ll bring back three, no—FOUR caravans of food. Then, he’ll have to believe that I’m competent enough to lead the clan. If I could do that all on my own, I can command an army of THOUSANDS.’

Slowly, Tyrell pushed his door open more without making a creak, in case his father was still in the chief house. Stealthily sliding through the crack, he crept his way to the front, pulled open the door, and snuck out.

It’s like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. Tyrell is about to get humbled by the elements….and by a giant who can match his spite 😅

He sighed, looking down at the book he brought to entertain himself. The premise was cheesy, chock-full of romance tropes bound to lure in the bored women usually within its demographic. The cover was long since bent and cracked with abuse. If he squinted he could ignore the water damage.

He opened its pages, instantly finding comfort within its simple prose and talldarkhandsome men with endearing secret lives. Just for a moment, if he ran his eyes over the words woman or she, and he separated himself from his body and his personhood, he could imagine himself with a man like that. Then the moment passed, and he was back to laughing at quippy dialogue and tearing up when one of two love interests saved a kitten from the cold rain.

He couldn’t think of a different frequency to try. Sure, he could go through all of the available frequencies one by one, but he wasn’t enthusiastic about the sheer amount of useless data that would create.

Think, man, think. What else did he know about the Cluster?

The Cluster was not a creature known for its beauty, at least in the same way the algae blooms of Alpha-Centauri were. Their colors were dull, each individual formed out of gnarled minerals harvested from Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons. Different Cluster colonies had been found in other star systems, larger and more unified. Sol’s, in comparison, was disorganized.

No, no, radio signals. Surely he knew something else about that.

Manic From An Unwanted Inheritance

I’m sure that you can imagine that of the many activities I would rather be doing, being in the backseat of an unknown classmate’s car at nine in the evening was not one of them. Granted, it was a nice car; an expensive looking hybrid electronic/Farenal engine SUV, with a well-manicured leather interior and uncomfortable bench seats. In the driver’s seat was a polite-looking kid I recognized as one of Aaron’s usal group of friends, and in the backseat next to me was Faarius. My backpack was securely in my lap.

For Day 4 I chose "the bite of sadness". I wrote it for a rewritten passage in my main WIP, my YA Dystopia The Blood Cleaners.

As Justin stood up, Naomi added, “You could even write down your thoughts in your journal.” Justin groaned as he remembered that journal. He better start writing to avoid fees.  “Hey, Lady Naomi, I mean, Mrs. Deere? I don’t know what to write in my journal.” Naomi laid out the tray upon oven mats on the counter “Do you know anyone who kept a diary?” “Not personally.” Naomi wiped her hands with her apron. “There’s no rules. Just write whatever you want to. Write down what you want your posterity to know about you. Or just dump your feelings. It can be therapeutic. No one has to read it.” Justin lay on his bed as he took the advice to heart. With all of the stress, pain, and confusion of the past few days, he just needed to say something. He didn’t want to cry. He wouldn’t want to answer when asked why he cried. He couldn’t see Joselyn as she shared his anger. He couldn’t tell her the Fists’ dark secrets that would rile her. He couldn’t assure her that her cause was worth fighting. He couldn’t tell her his pain. She wasn’t there to stroke his hair, breathe on his neck, and tease him with her lips. Joselyn was there to share the sadness. Joselyn was there to take sadness away. All that he could do was return to her. The blood upon the streets, the deathcries, the empty rotting houses, the gunshots. A veil of sadness hung over this city with no hope of lifting. Death followed him, stealing from him. He reminded himself that he was foolish to have gone against Joselyn’s wishes by coming out this way. Without her at his side, saying “I love you” his only companion was sadness.
