The Wolf and Romulus and Remus Mosaic, Roman Aldborough, North Yorkshire, 300-400CE, Leeds City Museum.
This panel formed the centrepiece of a large mosaic floor constructed in the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum, now Aldborough in North Yorkshire. The mosaic depicts the legend of Romulus and Remus. They were abandoned in the River Tiber but washed ashore where they were fed by a she-wolf.

Didrachm minted at Rome between 264 and 255 BCE, in the early years of the First Punic War. The obverse features Hercules, wearing a diadem and lionskin, with his club on his shoulder. This may reflect the importance of Hercules-cult in Rome of the Early and Middle Republic: a temple of Hercules Victor stood in the Forum Boarium, and legend held that the hero had defeated the fire-monster Cacus on that spot while returning from Spain with the cattle of Geryon. The reverse features the she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, with the inscription ROMANO below. The overall design of the didrachm, combining the quintessential Greek hero with the founding legend of Rome, points to Rome's growing international ambitions at the time of its minting: having recently completed its conquest of the Italian peninsula, including the culturally Greek area known as Magna Graecia, Rome sought to advertise itself on the wider Greek scene as it contended with Carthage for mastery of Sicily.

April 21st, Rome's Birthday

A day like today , Romulus became the first king of Rome, founding the city on the Palatine Hill. Beyond legend, archaeological excavations date the first settlements to the same period on the Palatine Hill there were already cabins and a wall.

Like every April 21st, today there is a great celebration in Rome.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROME! These coins show two foundational Roman myths.
On the first, Aeneas, alleged ancestor of Julius Caesar and founder of Rome, carries his father, Anchises, out of a burning Troy. The front shows the head of the goddess Venus, Aeneas's mother.
The second portrays the shepherd Faustulus with the twin brothers Romulus and Remus being nursed by the she-wolf. The front portrays Roma, the deity and personification of Rome.
All coins from the Elizabeth C. Evans Coin Collection at Connecticut College.

Two brothers who came from a harsh background aspiring to found a great city together- but disagreement rips them apart, inciting one to murder the other and take over. I love how Silco and Vander's story parallels that of Romulus and Remus, except it begs the question: What if Remus survived his brother's treachery? In the myth, the twins were even abandoned by the river Tyber to die, saved by the river god, and nurtured by a wolf, foreshadowing Silco's connection to the river and Vander's to canines.

This could just be me having to read mythology into everything, but Abby is kind of like the wolf that nursed Romulus and Remus. However Abby is not a literal wolf but a W.L.F ("wolf") soldier. Romulus and Remus are Lev and Yara. Instead of Yara being killed by Lev, she dies protecting him. Like Romulus and Remus, Lev and Yara have been excommunicated from their community for deeply unfair reasons and this is what leads them to the wolf, Abby.

In Part III of TBOSAS, Coriolanus tells Sejanus that they are like brothers and that Sejanus can trust him, and this has always stuck out to me for many reasons. However, the one that I want to address right now is the parallel it creates between Snow and Sejanus and Romulus and Remus. Namely, Romulus’s fratricide of Remus which led to Romulus founding the city of Rome, its institutions, government, military, etc. and how it mirrors Snow’s betrayal and killing of Sejanus. Snow’s betrayal is what ultimately led to Gaul allowing Snow to return home and taking him under her wing as a mentor of sorts, as well as him becoming heir to the Plinth fortune. Thus Sejanus’s death resulting from Snow’s actions played a major part (along with Lucy Gray) in setting Snow down the path of evil and to becoming the dictator we see see in the trilogy—the man who instilled new life into the Hunger Games and ensured their survival for the next 65 years.
#the hunger games#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#ballad of songbirds and snakes#tbosas#coriolanus snow#sejanus plinth#romulus and remus#thg#not to mention that dispute between Romulus and Remus which led to the fratricide was over the results of an augury#and augury is the practice of observing the behavior or pattern of birds to receive omens or signs
