How horrifying must it be to be Damian Bane? and not Barsimmeon AS Damien Bane, I mean the CHARACTER Damien Bane. They've already established (thanks to the genius of Ify of which I am VERY grateful for this plot mechanic) that the movie/character versions of the play characters are trapped in reflections but ultimately unable to do anything in their own bodies. Sure, it's clear that the PC reflections we've met don't mind. Vic just wants to help Wendel out, and G13 is clearly rooting for Usha. But what about Damien Bane? You've been forced into a reflection, unable to control the actions of a man who is using your body as a joyride vehicle. Your original intentions as a character have been muddied beyond belief by this to the point where nobody knows what ideals you originally stood for. Were you a criminal? Were you a good guy? do you miss the absurdity of your own world at all? Has all the fun been sucked out of you by virtue of being forced to watch on as someone else uses the shell of your body as a tank to do things you'd never do? How horrifying. Or maybe he just doesn't care at all? who knows. Who knows.

Ully’s May Reading Log
I spend entirely too much time reading and have catalogued the experience for the month of May. I’m making a post because my friend @ice-mage does this and reading books he’s recommended is always a delight.
Totals for works read to completion in the month of May: 32 works (7 fic and 25 original). ~2,575,000 words / 9,199 pages. 2 rereads.
Best:
Tied for 1st:
We Were Never Lovers by Sasha Avice [wc ~98k pc 325]
Rated: Adore
Summary: When Aboriginal footballer Sean Hiller wakes up in the hospital he’s confused and put out that everyone seems to think his good for nothing white boy teammate Jack Reaver is his bestie. He’s missing the last two years of his life though and when it’s time for discharge Jack is the only person available to keep an eye on him at home so he guesses he can tolerate him for a little bit.
My Personal Thoughts: We were never lovers takes amnesia and somehow makes it completely believable. The characters are real and messy and not always likeable but I rooted for them anyway. It deals with the intersection of race and ethnicity. With grief and isolation. With what happens when you believe it's all just understood and then you realize no actually... they didn't know you love them.
Meet Me in the Sky by Jeffery K Davenport [wc ~98k pc 324]
Rated: Adore
Summary: Billy is on his way to be the best man-of-honor his little sister could possibly ask for. He is perfectly organized and perfectly packed and he’s prepared to not think at all about his ex-husband thank you very much. Leaving his phone in his uber is a minor inconvenience that cascades into a hilarious chain of events.
My Personal Thoughts: This story is so well written. It’s hysterical and poignant. I love that it features 2 queer black men. Billy and Michael are great. The writing reminds me of Fredrik Backman. The only bits of the story that I didn’t like were some minor inconsistencies (at one point they go to buy toothbrushes and toothpaste but never complete the purchase, then later when they kiss Billy thinks about how Michael is minty. How? No toothcare has happened!) Also Billy mentions being a bit concerned about money but he spends money like someone who isn’t all that concerned about money… It’s the second book Jeffery Davenport has written (I read it first) and it’s better than his first one so I really look forward to whatever he publishes next.
Tied for 3rd:
A Spell for Heart Sickness by Alistair Reeves [wc ~99k pc 330]
Rated: Love/Adore
Summary: Briar is a flamboyant witch who is just finishing up school and is about to start his residency. He’s an orphan *and* ailing from a terminal curse so he has to work twice as hard as his peers to make his mark but he’s clever and kind and determined to become something great before the curse does him in.
My Personal Thoughts: This story is both cozy and high stakes. I loved the magic system. I loved Briar. I loved that Briar is a dumb genius and that the prophesies he experiences just make it harder for him to live his life.
You & Me by Tal Bauer [wc ~115k pc 384]
Rated: Love/Adore
Summary: Single dad Luke just wants to find a way to connect to his teenaged son, he wasn’t planning to become best friends with another one of the dads that helps out at Last Waters High School football games. Sometimes things you don’t plan for can be good though.
My Personal Thoughts: While You&Me is 40 year old single dads friends to lovers it's also soooooo much more than that. The father son relationships are nuanced and painful and just so good. There's religious trauma and grief. I laughed aloud at least 5 times while reading it.
Worst:
The Ballerino and the Biker by Rebecca James
Rated: Side Eye
Summary: A wealthy boy named Morgan has been training as a ballet dancer in Italy for years and returns to NYC for the funeral of his estranged older brother after which he is kidnapped by a motorcycle gang.
My Personal Thoughts: If this book was a loaf of bread it would be both burned and still doughy. There are soooo many things happening. Morgan’s ballet for instance. Why is he studying in Milan? I think just because it sounds fancy tbh. Of the best ballet schools in the world 2 are located in NYC. There are 2 in Russia, one in London, one in Paris, one in Australia… Then there’s Morgan’s money. He inherited a multimillion(billion?) dollar real estate empire when his parents died a few years back and he doesn’t want to run it but he doesn’t want to sell it and he’s only getting reports from a single person with the company. There’s the storyline of his brother’s death and his brother’s motorcycle club which straddles the line of legality. None of these stories was fully explored and all of them were overdramatic. I haven’t even scraped the surface.
Runners up for Best Read:
Real Fine Line by Lumifern on Ao3 [wc 132k pc ~ 440.]
Rated: love
Summary: This is a RoyEd Fullmetal Alchemist fanfiction. After the Promised Day Ed doesn’t resign from the military and instead stays on to help Mustang make Fuhrer.
Personal Thoughts: I loved how much it felt like a continuation of the original story. The political intrigue was on point. The way in which Ed and Roy become life lines for each other felt organic and inevitable.
Season’s Change by Cait Nary [wc ~113k pg 377]
Rated: Love (The only book I read twice this month.)
This is a queer hockey romance novel that includes: and they were roommates, a bit of an age gap, being in the closet, mutual pining, severe anxiety, and a stunning bi-awakening.
Summary: Olly was traded after his roommate on his previous team found out he was gay and reacted badly. Olly hasn’t left fight or flight mode since. At his new team management has paired him to room with a rookie named Benji who’d been coming up through the development league and has proven he’s a golden retriever in human form.
Personal thoughts: My favorite things about this book were; the depictions of Olly’s anxiety which felt accurate and real, and the delightful way in which Benji after having fooled around with multiple guys in his life realizes, “Oh!? Maybe I’m not straight???” which mirrors my own life experience entirely too closely. *laughing*
Kings Rising by C.S. Pacat
Rated: Love
Summary: This is the 3rd book in a trilogy and you definitely have to read the first two. In general the setup is that there are two crown princes of neighboring rival kingdoms that have been at both active and cold war for a decade or so. The main character Damen (crown prince of Akielos) gets kidnapped and then given as a slave to the rival crown prince Laurent of Vere. In this book there are sweeping battles and political maneuvering as well as tentative trust, heartbreak, and pining.
My Personal Thoughts: This series is really good but it contains so much sexual violence and non-consent that it was also really hard to read particularly for the first book. It does pay off and it is very well crafted but it’s dark. If you’re in the mood for something angsty and you’ve got the time for 1,015 pages you should go for it.
Tough Guy by Rachel Reid [wc ~94k pc 312]
Rating: Love
Summary: Ryan is a massive hockey player who’s job on the ice is to rough guys up if they damage the more talented players so he fights even though he hates it. He’s the kind of player who’s been on more teams than he’s played seasons of hockey and he truly just needs to be loved on. He’s starting over with a new team when he runs into his first crush from high school while picking up his meds at the pharmacy.
Personal Thoughts: This story is absolutely adorable and I think it would resonate with anyone who experiences body dysphoria and or negative self-talk. Watching Ryan become someone he likes is healing on the soul level.
*A primmer for my rating system. I’ve chosen not to use stars just because if I did I would want to rate solid books as 5 stars and then would have nowhere to go whenever I encountered those blue moon books that are beyond solid and will live rent free until I forget them because I’m 93 and have dementia. My system this month has gone like so:
DNF – I couldn’t read this for whatever reason.
Awful – I finished this and it was a problem in at least 7 ways
Side Eye – I finished this and it was a problem in at least 5 ways.
Eh – I finished this and it was a problem in 1 to 3 ways
Like – I finished this and it wasn’t brilliant but I enjoyed it.
Really Like – I enjoyed this book. It didn’t have any major flaws but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Love – This book made me feel deeply and will be worth reading again. If the description interests you it is definitely worth your time
Adore – This book is the absolute Crème of the crop. I will be buying copies to give to my friends.

totally completely unrelated to my last message on Orchestra but any chance you could do a analysis/breakdown of We Sapient Stardust?
Alright so for the sake of not regurgitating things I've already said, I'm not going to go in depth about any of the songs in particular. I've already written loads about them on Genius so if anyone wants to know What's Up With [insert song here] they can go there. Instead, I'm gonna talk about what went into making the album as a whole.
We Sapient Stardust's """production""" began pretty much as soon as And That Means Everything finished. In fact, I'm pretty sure I had written most of Sleepless Friends before And That Means Everything even came out. After spending a whole year making an album about the past, I was really itching to write about how I felt in the present. And I felt.... bad. A friend has told me that We Sapient Stardust feels like "dealing with the condition of Being 17" and like. That's honestly exactly what it was. I was 17, limping over the high school finish line, feeling tired and sad and anxious about the future pretty much every day. The opening line of There Are Some Things I'd Rather Not Say was pretty much a summation of how I felt then. One year left till I fell apart.
Attached: Old cover idea/placeholder I had for Limbic System's Rag Doll. Was originally playing with the idea of it being part of the Burnout Series (Dysania, Anemia) but ultimately decided it didn't really fit in with those songs.
Initially, the album was a lot less existential. It was more just songs about how badly I felt, with most of them trailing off into angsty self-loathing. I had kind of made up my mind from the start that this was going to be the sad album, but at the beginning a lot of that sadness and misery was specifically centered on me. I felt really bad so I wrote a lot of songs about feeling really bad. At some point I leaned more into the existential themes, because honestly you can only spend so much of your free time writing songs about how much you don't like yourself before it feels just a little bit counter-intuitive to your mental health. Writing songs like that doesn't really feel like catharsis to me, it just feels like kicking myself while I'm down, and I didn't want my second album to feel like a thirty minute self hate session. Some artists can pull that off really well, I definitely can't.
Attached: The first demo of Sleepless Friends (at the time called Anarchist Cookbook), featuring slightly different lyrics and my (sickness afflicted) out of tune singing.
The cover started as just a test to try and make something in a collage style, I was really inspired by The Altogether's Silo EP cover art and wanted to make something in that vein. The oldest version of it on my PC I could find is from February 2nd 2024. It went through a few changes, at one point I had drawn a little figure in the sky in place of the plane, and at another point it had the album title and drawn-on stars like ATME, but eventually I just settled on using the collage as it was. It felt strong enough with to stand on its own. It was a little weird having something and knowing it would be the album cover, since for pretty much all of ATME's production I had convinced myself the cover was a placeholder.
Attached: collage album cover attempt.png, the first ever version. Kind of mostly the same, although the saturation was way down and it didn't have the outlines drawn in. These are how the photos looked when I took them, but then I realized the saturation made it look 1000% better.
The name was also a bit subject to change, as there was a lot of places I wanted to go with the album. I think at one point it was called "Songs For Scum". A few others include "Wish It Would Settle In", "Something About Drowning" (if I used this one the acronym wouldve been SAD which I think is funny), and "The Boy Who Cried Lonely". A lot of these names were made around the same time I was writing all of those self-loathing downer songs, so they were all vaguely angsty. Once I landed on We Sapient Stardust though, it was pretty much set in stone. Although, at one point there was going to be a companion EP called "Searching For Solace", filled with outtakes. I scrapped it mostly because I just didn't have enough scrapped material that I liked enough to release.
Attached: The moodboard I made for the album a month before it came out. The cat is the same one from the Blacktop Angels cover, because at the time Kafkaesque was Blacktop Angels Pt II. I didn't end up going with that though, so if I could remake it now I'd probably replace it with a dog instead. Fun fact: The cat was a stray at my high school, and my friend named it Chickpea.
Honestly between the two of them, We Sapient Stardust was a way harder album to make then And That Means Everything was, on pretty much all fronts. It's definitely my favorite between the two of them, but in my head, they're sister albums that are meant to go together. I'm incredibly proud of We Sapient Stardust, and I think I'll stay proud of it for a long time. I hope anyone who listened to it connected with it. That's really all I could hope for.
(And, as a final note, thanks to everyone who provided their voices for the group chant! That moment is probably my favorite thing I've ever made, and I couldn't have done it without them. All of their names are listed in the description of the YouTube video and in the Bandcamp page. Some of them even have their own music, so check them out!)
Anyways, hope that sufficed as enough rambling for a satisfying answer, haha

i remember being 7, 8, hanging out at a friend's house while he was playing video games and coming across his collection of all 42 dragon ball volumes. it was the mirrored french version that had some weird translation choices, such as transliterating goku as 'sangoku' (as in merging his first and last name together), master roshi being called genius tortoise, etc. while id loved reading i think it was at that point the longest story id ever read by far. it introduced me to manga and graphic novels as a whole, it pumped me up and provoked visceral emotional reactions. i think it was the first time any work of fiction made me cry, when goku sacrificed himself to defeat cell and then when vegeta blew himself up and finally when they used every earthling's power to use the spirit bomb against buu. when i got to the end of volume 42 i ardently started looking for what came next because surely it couldn't be over! i begged my mom to remove parental controls on our large home pc so i could search for dragon ball, and it's how i found gt and the movies, on dubious websites where the 144p videos were embedsed with lousy fansubs. i think dbgt was the first series i ever streamed. i discovered deviantart, fanfiction dot net by looking for fan content of dragon ball. i discovered forums. eventually i discovered youtube as a preteen, watching so many linkin park amvs. dragon ball led me to the internet, it led me to reading more manga, it led me to the first real realisation of how long form content could create stories and exciting fights and provoke deep emotions within me. even as a teen and adult i periodically reread it with a smile. even when it's bad, even when it's aged poorly or you can see where toriyama's editors forced a last minute major change to the story, toriyama had a gift for still keeping things exciting, coming up with a bigger more worrying threat, making you root for its characters. vegeta remains imo one of my favourite redemption arcs in all of fiction. the work dragon ball did, its humor, its fights, its imagery all changed not just me but the industry as a whole, and imo 95% of shounen mangaka dont quite manage to capture that energy and emotion through fights he did. it's the grandaddy of all shounen for a reason.
i didnt think id be so upset over this but i am.

As I've been mining Prince Caspian for dialogue for the screenplay (yes, I'm on Act 2 already, wish I could write this quickly for real projects, but it helps when half the dialogue and the basic structure of the story is already there for you), I am struck by just how clearly Lewis shows the Pevensies' personalities in the sandwich scene.
Edmund: Practical, matter-of-fact, persistent. "What about those sandwiches," he asks, and lists all the reasons they should eat them now, and sticks to his point through all the digressions. He is also the one, after the sandwiches are eaten, who suggests they forage for food.
Susan: Fearful and pessimistic. "Hadn't we better save them," she says, because she thinks they may need the sandwiches more later. She also, I am sad to say, does not offer any helpful suggestions when they are afterward thinking of more food options, but instead merely says it was a pity they had eaten the sandwiches so soon.
Lucy: The dreamer. When the others are figuring out the practical details of the sandwiches, she merely comments that she wishes they could go on being as not-hungry as they were when they were thirsty. She does suggest catching shrimp for food, but this is even less helpful than Edmund's first idea of collecting gulls' eggs, since they have no nets. She also, despite having lived in Narnia and having had many adventures there, has the vague idea that when stories speak of hermits and knights-errant eating roots, it means roots of trees.
Peter: Quiet, thoughtful, and decisive. He stays out of the argument entirely, choosing to keep his own unhelpful thoughts to himself rather than contribute to the pointless debate. Not until a practical suggestion has been made--Edmund's--does he speak up, and then it is to confirm Edmund's choice and tell the others that that's what they should do, at which point the argument stops and they follow his lead.
We see this again in the scene where they are figuring out that they are back in Narnia. Susan is the most distraught by the memories of all they've lost, and afterward doesn't want them to open the treasure room door because she's afraid of what might come out. Peter takes charge and is the one to figure out that they are in Narnia, and also comforts Susan and reminds her that she is a queen here. Edmund thinks of all the practical objections to them being in Narnia, and later is the one to figure out the timeline differences. Lucy has "felt for hours that there was some wonderful mystery" about the island and the castle ruins, and immediately thinks of how excited the Narnians will be at their return later when they figure out that it really has been hundreds of years since their departure--again, dreamy and thinking about their return more in the abstract than in the concrete. (It's striking that all three of the others notice the boat while she's talking about the Narnians being excited to see them--she is more caught up in imagining their response than in paying attention to what's happening in the here and now.)
It's especially interesting because both the old BBC/Wonderworks films and the Disney movies show Peter as the slightly overbearing older brother (more exaggerated in the Disney movies, where he's bossy and arrogant especially in PC); Susan as practical (again, overdone to the point of obnoxiousness in the Disney movies, where she ought to have been named Queen Susan the Practical or Queen Susan the Perpetually Exasperated or Queen Susan the Know-It-All, as there wasn't an ounce of gentleness in her character); Edmund as snarky (Edmund in the books IS a bit snarky, but it isn't the driving force behind his character); and Lucy as bouncy, extroverted, heart-on-her-sleeve, and honestly a little bit shallow (as with Edmund, Lucy in the books is occasionally bouncy, and definitely cheerful, but oh boy does she feel things deeply--too deeply for words, often).
Anyway, I'm just struck once again by Lewis's genius for giving a clear picture in only a few words, and how easy it is to miss on a casual reading. I've read and re-read PC since I was a kid, and this was the first time I saw how well-depicted their personalities just by a few short sentences. The only reason the Narnia books are so short is because Lewis had the ability to use exactly the right word in the right place where any other writer would have needed a paragraph. And because he does it so simply, it's easy to overlook, but once you do see it in one place, you see it in all the books. Sheer brilliance.

Rogue: Genesia Update Introduces Void Descent

Rogue: Genesia action rogue-lite game releases update 1.0 - Void Descent on Linux, Steam Deck, and Windows PC. All thanks to the creative genius of developer Ouadi Huard. Which you can find in full force on Steam with 85% Very Positive reviews. Welcome to Rogue: Genesia, where the only way to survive is to fight your way through waves of deadly enemies! You play as Rog, the ultimate weapon master, who’s ready to take on everything this dangerous world throws at him. Think you can handle it? It’s not going to be easy, but that’s what makes it awesome.
A World Full of Danger
Picture this: you're standing in a world crawling with enemies — hundreds of them swarming the screen, all out for blood. Your mission? Destroy them all, grow stronger, and keep the slaughter going. You’ll choose your build from over 200+ passive upgrades and 60+ deadly weapons. Want to wield a sword and slice through waves? Prefer to blast enemies with powerful projectiles? In this action rogue-lite, it's all up to you.
Welcome to the A-Rank World
Think you’re tough? Prove it in the Void Descent update. The new A-rank world is here in Rogue: Genesia, and it’s only for real legends. To unlock it, you’ve got to crush 20 intense challenges. Once you're in, you’ll face corrupted enemies — stronger, nastier versions of the monsters you've faced before. There's also the new Void Dimension, where the danger's turned up to 11. Swarm stages can show up anywhere, so stay sharp.
Game-Changing Challenges in Rogue: Genesia
Ready to test your skills? The A-rank challenges are brutal but oh-so-rewarding. Here are some to chew on:
"Rooted" – Your damage is scaled back, forcing you to fight smarter.
"Blood-Handed" – Each kill pumps up corruption, which slowly chips away at your power. Survive as long as you can!
"Pacifist" – No weapons. Just you, time, and a lot of dodging. Enemies will slowly lose health while you survive by wits alone.
"Purist" – No equipment, talents, shops, or cards. If you make it through this, you’re a beast.
New Mechanics and Looping Runs
Think you've beaten it all in Rogue: Genesia? Not so fast. Once you rack up over 500 corruption in the Manor’s mirror event, you can unlock looping runs. After finishing a run, you can start over with tougher enemies but better loot. But be warned — if an enemy's health hits infinity, you're done.

Anonymous asked: I hugely appreciate how educated you are with your education in the Classics (at either Oxford or Cambridge I think) but I ask with sincere respect how does any of it inform your privileged life in this day and age? It’s easy to say how much we should value our European traditions and heritage it is quite another to live it out don’t you agree? What do you personally get from it?
This is a very relevant question and I apologise if I have stalled in answering it as I was busy with work and life to formulate a worthy reply. But your question is an important one indeed for anyone who harkens to the past as a guide for the present and the future.
I won’t waste space here and tick box all the purely academic reasons why the Classical world is still relevant for us today. I think you can find that in easy to read books and articles written by eminent Classicists who do an admirable service in making the Classical World come alive for the general public (Mary Beard, Bettany Hughes, Emily Wilson, Edith Hall, Peter Jones, Bernard Knox, Robin Lane Fox, Paul Cartledge, and Donald Kagan amongst others that come to mind). But it’s an uphill battle to be sure.
Classics - at least in United Kingdom - has been regressively marginalised with each passing generation starting from school up to university entry. It has an image problem. Few pay much attention to scholars of Latin and Greek. The impression is that Classicists are snobbish and is the education of privileged elitists who master languages that are not spoken. They learn to write them only to read them better. They slap your hands when you write a Latin word common in Sallust or Livy, rather than in Cicero. There is some truth to that sadly. To a large extent Classicists themselves have not been a good advertisement for why anyone should appreciate let alone study the classical world.
At one end those educated in the Classics can come across as encouraging elitism, snobbish pedantry and a sniffy social superiority and at the other end those not versed in Classics but through Hollywood (any sword and sandal film like Gladiator etc) and PC white washed TV series (BBC’s Troy is a good example) have formed a romantic attachment to the ‘heroic’ past by having blue pilled themselves into escapism. Both extremes makes Classics a fetish rather than a guide for life through the beauty and power of the language and culture of the singular Greeks and Romans.
The study of Classics can become the proverbial dog who can dance on two legs, but for what practical purpose? There is the rub. Classics, at its best, offers the historical, philological, and literary foundation and discipline to apply a critical method to every general aspect of learning - and living.
I was fortunate that I had Classicists - both within my family and also my teachers - who were cultured and had led such interesting lives and were able to marry their Classicist mind to their life experiences (often through the experience of war). So learning European languages was not just to get one’s head around arid esoteric articles by 19th-century Frenchmen on the Athenian banking system or Demosthenes’ use of praeteritio and apophasis, but also to appreciate the genius of Dante,Voltaire and Goethe. Classics should never just be about philology though because it can result in a life mostly missed.
Perhaps others might call it privileged but I consider my childhood blessed because I was surrounded by family members who were educated in the Classics - more rare than one might suppose. Through my great aunts and grandmother they instilled the discipline that the mastery of Latin and Greek fuelled the ability to speak and write good English -- and why the latter mattered as much or more than the former.
By the time I left both Cambridge and Oxford behind, I could cite passage numbers in Greek texts of what Thucydides and Plutarch thought of Nicias. But it was only when I went through Sandhurst to pass out as a commissioned army officer did it truly jump off the page and become alive for me.
Moreover having had long fire side conversations with both my grandfather and father - both Oxbridge educated Classicists and both served in distant different types of wars as swashbuckling officers - did I use that learning to understand why for example was Nicias such a laughably mediocre general of the Peloponnesian War. And this was essentially the practical point of reading Thucydides and Plutarch about Nicias in the first place.
I spent many hours in my down time during my service in Afghanistan between missions re-reading dog earred favourite Classicist texts. I began to see the ghosts of the Greeks in the characters of those with whom I was serving. Some began to resemble Sophoclean characters - especially the less well-known ‘losers’ like Ajax and Philoctetes - the sort of tragic heroes whom we root for but the odds are against them - think of any American Western film or the more pathological Tarantino films. Like Sophocles I saw majestic characters (some special forces operators) out of place in a modernising world who would rather perish than change - but in a context where their sacrifice schools the lesser around them about what the old breed was about and what was being lost.
A running thread from a childhood spent in many other countries - from South Asia to the Far East - to the present day is learning to appreciate our landscape as the Ancient world did. The cultivation of curiosity of cultures was seeded in childhood. Respecting and even admiring other cultures - Indian, Iranian, Chinese and Japanese primarily come to mind - led me to appreciate and treasure my own cultural heritage and traditions. The DNA of both the Roman and Greek world went far and wide and so teasing out their fingerprints was fun. In northern Pakistan, we came across ‘Alexander’s children’ - children with blonde and blue eyes who were said to be descended from Alexander the Great’s time in Afghanistan and India - and wandering around the banks of the Jhelum river imagining how Alexander beat his respected foe (later ally) King Porus at the Battle of Hydaspes in 326BC.
These days despite having a busy corporate career I help support running a French vineyard managed foremost by two exceptional cousins and their French partners. As such the Classics still resonate in how I look at the land beyond the vineyard - bridges, roads, towers, walls - and imagine the Greeks not with ink and papyrus but as men of action, farmers and hoplites, in a rough climate on poor soils. I suddenly envision them pruning and plowing in Laureion, the Oropos, and Acharnae, more like the rugged local farmers with whom come harvest time I roll my sleeves up and get my hands dirty in the vineyards than as the professors in elbow patches who had claimed them.

Knowing and learning about the Classical roots of our Western heritage isn’t just a question of culture it’s also about what personally motivates us in life and how that determines how we make consequential choices in life.
I live in fear of one Greek word ‘akrasia’. Ancient Greek philosophers coined the term to explain the lack of motivation in life. Most of the philosophical conundrums explored by contemporary philosophers were already explored in Ancient Greece. In fact, Ancient Greek philosophers laid the solid foundation for all philosophical approaches that appeared throughout history: theories of Kant, Hegel or Nietzsche would never exist without Socrates, Plato or Aristotle.
Among the many problems that baffled the Ancient Greeks, one of them gets quite a lot of attention today. Why don’t we always do what’s best for us? Why do we abandon good decisions in favour of bad ones? Why can’t we follow through on our plans and ideas?
Many people would say that the answer is simply laziness or decision fatigue, but Ancient Greek philosophers believed that the problem lay much deeper, in human nature itself. ‘Akrasia’ describes a state of acting against one’s better judgement or a lack of will that prevents one from doing the right thing. Plato believed that akrasia is not an issue in itself, because people always choose the solution they think is the best for them, and sometimes it accidentally happens that they choose the bad solution because of poor judgement. On the other hand, Aristotle disagreed with this explanation and argued that the fault in the human process of reasoning is not responsible for akrasia. He believed that the answer lies in the human tendency to desire, which is often far stronger than reason.
As with almost all philosophical concepts, a consensus has never been reached and akrasia remains open to interpretation. But its practical consequences are all too real in today’s world. Motivation is what makes us unpredictable and persistent, and the life circumstances of the modern world often make motivation disappear.
Today - regardless how old or young one is - many are more and more tempted to exchange a long-term goal for an immediately available pleasure in all its forms from the emotional band aid of porn from a lifeless relationship (or a lack of one) to escaping loneliness for the false intimacy of social media friendship. The lack of motivation can cause us to reduce ourselves to someone else’s standards when we know we can be or do better.

The Greeks felt that the way you think and feel about yourself, including your beliefs and expectations about what is possible for you, determines everything that happens to you. When you change the quality of your thinking, you change the quality of your life. I’ve been deeply influenced by Aristotle’s idea that virtue is a habit, something you practice and get better at, rather than something that comes naturally. “The control of the appetites by right reason,” is how he defined it. Another way to reframe this is to say, “Virtue is knowing what you really want,” and then building the intellectual, spiritual, and moral muscle to go after it.
To be cultured - as opposed to be merely educated - is how you put what you’ve learned to work in your own life, seeing the world around you more deeply because of the historical, literary, artistic and philosophical resonances that current experiences evoke. This is the privilege of being cultured. For me Classical stories come often to my mind, and some times provide guides to action (much as Plutarch intended his histories of famous men to be guides to morality and action). The classics then are a part of my mental toolset and the context I think with some of the time. I see that as the real blessing in my life.
Thanks for your question.
