Fellow gentiles as The Terf (JKR)’s Game comes out this month I am gently reminding all of us that we should be thoughtful about centering ourselves and our experiences (eg. trans people) when speaking about this game given that the entire premise basically builds off blood libel and antisemitic tropes.

We should be doing more to care for our Jewish brothers and sisters and ensuring their well being, and that begins with acknowledging that even without the anti-trans agendas she pushes, she has pushed antisemitism within her books for years and though not directly involved, her upcoming game does the same.

Basically, all this to say: boycott the game for her transmisogyny, obviously, but the antisemitism should not be secondary to that, especially given the spike in antisemitic violence right now.

But what I will explain, is that JKR isn’t just a hateful person, she without a shadow of a doubt is a massive contributing reason as to why I am currently watching my government try to tear my bear minimum rights from me, and witnessing Texas try to eliminate trans people entirely. I’m not being hyperbolic, it’s her fucking fault.

She made transphobia a main stream concept. Yes, transphobia always existed but the thing about most people is they are just too busy to be looking for things to hate. That’s the honest to goodness truth, and we’ve seen this happen over, and over, and over again. With vaccines, with abortion, with homophobia. When a celebrity adopts a hateful idea and clings to it, people talk about it. That talk ripples outwards with people who probably didn’t care much before, getting on the side of that celeb because of their parasocial attachment to them. Suddenly they’re dragged into indoctrinating far right rhetoric that teaches them to dehumanise and hurt minority groups. What becomes one persons shitty view is suddenly them, an army of their defenders, and then an ocean of people who didn’t care before but will now suddenly go “well, I’m not sure I like that, that’s not fair is it?” When they see people being given something, even if it’s basic human decency.

And then, the most sickening thing of all happens, conservative and sometimes even liberal politicians see a talking point, and they take advantage of it. They see something they can use, a friction point, and they make it their stand so they can win these shitty people over to them, and distract from real fucking issues. Oh you want to talk about labour rights? Sorry you can’t, instead we have to focus on how you can’t go to the fucking bathroom anymore safely because trans women have been scapegoats for abuse that WASNT FUCKING HAPPENING

You want to talk about the cost of living? Can’t do that, because trans people are telling kids to have bodily autonomy and that’s grooming. GRC reform to fall in line with other sensible countries? Not any more, we hate you so much we will exercise our before now unused power over Scotland just to stop that happening bc what if bad men use it to hurt women, like there isn’t a rap sheet as long as my arm dripping with proof that politicians alone didn’t need to pretend to be a woman in order this assault women. We are now a scapegoat for their focus, a smokescreen they can use to cloak themselves when they are posed actually important questions.

Transphobic views are now weaponised. Suddenly people who would never have cared about me before, want me dead. Do you understand how terrifying that is to live with? Every time I want to piss in public I have to confront the fear of either going to the men’s room, possibly being spotted and confronted because I don’t always pass, or going to the women’s room, where I’ll get stares for my beard and shaved head, and then possibly get confronted. It’s a new burden added to going outside.

Sickening far right politicians are always doing this dance. Transphobia is the new homophobia, which was the new antisemitism, which was the new racism, and so on down the line. We are just the next subjugated group they can use to win people over, someone they can use to point at and go “don’t you want to feel superior to someone? Like you matter more? You matter more than these people and let me tell you why”.

And JKR? She kicked that ball into motion.

I know a lot of people feel attachment to HP still. I can’t stop that, but I don’t feel it anymore. They are the reason I learned to love reading but now all that’s left when I look at the series is the stain of the author. Of knowing that she wants me dead, if not actively, then by smothering suppression. If you came to me looking for a trans person to give you a pass to get the game, then I’m sorry, you won’t get it.

I don’t want to be a political issue. I just want to live.

Frankly kind of tired of the Sirona Ryan hullabaloo like. Someone even said "Sirona, as in Sir and Onna, the Japanese word for woman!" Like?? Please. It's a Celtic name. Why are we all losing our collective heads because the first three letters of a trans girl's name spell out S-I-R? I mean- I could point out that the promotion team has been doing backflips trying to convince people that No Really This Game is Very Pro Trans PLEASE Buy It so this would be quite the opposite of all their efforts, or the fact that although Terfling thinks Cho Chang and Shacklebolt are appropriate names for characters of colour, she wasn't the one who named this particular character, but.. do I even have to? It kind of feels like we're way past that at this point..... Like.... Ever since the antiSemetic imagery and plotline? That's a pretty big one in and of itself that gets largely ignored by pretty much everyone except Jewish people. But how about Terfling bragging that all the proceeds are going to fund anti-trans orgs? But no I suppose since the character's name kind of sounds like the words Sir and Onna that's what we've all decided to be mad at today.

Let me introduce you to my favorite subreddit, r/hobbydrama, by way of posts about some of the most sordid moments in early Harry Potter fandom history.

Content warning: While most of these are amusing Internet dramas, the first one is genuinely awful, as will be clear from the summary.

I've put them in chronological order and pulled the summaries from the posts. Many thanks to everyone on Reddit who put these posts together!

Popular author turns out to be a cult leader (Late 1990s-2015*)

TL;DR: A famous fanfiction author turns out to be a real creep. He uses a lot of pseudonyms and sockpuppets, convinces some of his fans to move in with him, claims to mind-meld with fictional characters, insists his fanfiction is better than Harry Potter itself, and has questionable views on women. Oh, and he was involved in a triple homicide and used the girl's death for fun and profit.

The Cassandra Cla(i)re Saga (2000-2016)

TL;DR: The author of the fanfic trilogy that popularized “Draco in Leather Pants” is also a famous YA author, with a long, complicated history involving fandom drama and Ginny/Ron romance fic.

Married to Severus Snape on the Astral Plane: The Story of the Religion of Snapewives (early 2000s-early 2010s)

TL;DR: There was an actual religion centering on Severus Snape, who was portrayed as an eternal and divine being similar to the Christian God. It had theological arguments, early schisms, and its own vows and prayers, which were all taken completely seriously by its followers, the Snapeists.

TL;DR: Woman wants to be a part of the popular clique, uses a combination of ridiculous lies, made-up fangirls, and Christian strawmen sockpuppets to build up enough fame to join the popular clique. Is eventually exposed.

J.K. Rowling's husband's "fake" appendicitis, symbolic hippogriff romance, evil Chinese abortions, and the genetics of shipping the wrong ships: tales from the Harmony vs. Ronmione ship war (2005-2007)

A not-so-brief, still not at all comprehensive account of some of the earliest, stupidest Harry Potter shipping drama. Many thanks to the archived remnants of Fan Wank for detailing all of this, and to the people who made this extra funny by coming up with some of the most batshit ship names and insults I’ve ever seen. Merlin bless the good ship Ronmione/Romione/Heron/whateverthefuck, long may she sail. And, though the HMS Harmony/PumpkinPie/whateverthefuckelse capsized long ago, may her memory live on.

Goffick Harry Potter and Fabricated Child Abuse: The Saga of My Immortal (2006-2007, 2017)

Here’s another summary of ridiculous internet drama. This time, it involves Hermione Granger being an emo weaboo who speaks exclusively in broken Japanese, a satanist vampire Harry Potter whose scar has turned itself into a pentagram, a teenage girl’s shitty Mary Sue who gets darker and edgier with every passing chapter, and a YA author desperate to capitalize on the unlikely success of an infamous fanfic published a decade ago. Welcome to the increasingly weird saga of My Immortal.

Since people are talking about TV!GO again and Neil, here's my two cents.

Something that always comes up in these talks is "Neil is a good ally and not a homophobe!" as roundabout "proof" of A/C being canon. And I feel like that's a result of the myopic way homophobic/racist/sexist/etc. has become synonymous with "bad person, pls cancel" rather than a description of an ingrained set of biases, many of them unconscious, many of them wildly different in levels of harmful impact. (Meaning, someone who actively votes against queer rights is a much bigger problem than someone who writes bad queer rep.)

A really good way to explain this is to look at representation that was progressive for its time but is dated now. Take black actors in movies released in the 80s and 90s and 2000's. Black people became more common, often in supporting roles, sometimes predictably enough that "Sassy Black Friend" or "Black Dude Dies First" became their own tropes. Now of course, this is more progressive than the mid-20th-century time point when they would only play nurses or cleaners, and any decision to cast black people in roles more diverse than that was in some way motivated by progressiveness. But at the same time, what motivates a (usually white) director to give the supporting role to the black actor, but keep the starring roles white? Are we really going to pretend it's not racism? Come on. Racist/homophobic/sexist/etc. bias isn't a binary, it's a complex spectrum of sliding scales and what roles you're comfortable envisioning someone in. I fully believe that Neil simply isn't comfortable with making his leads G-A-Y gay, but is more comfortable with giving them more obscure or less threatening queer identities like asexual or nonbinary or whatnot (or at least, "not excluding" them as per his tweets). Because he's still a straight guy with some level of queerphobic bias, even if is, in many ways, a good queer ally (let's not forget him pushing back against Rowling and TERFs there especially). Just... not in this particular, fairly minor way. That is exactly why A/C isn't canon and Dream/Hob Gadling isn't canon, and why both ships exist primarily in the realm of eyefucking meaningful looks, and why Neil in 2019 twisted himself in circles on Twitter shooting down the idea of Crowley and Azi being gay without being too overt about it.

Hell, I don't even hold it against him. People write what they gotta write, what speaks to them, etc. Sometimes that means only writing things you're comfortable with, such a wink-wink-squint ship that could mean anything.

My only real gripe is that Neil was a little too eager to pat himself on the back when TV!GO came out, and acted a bit too smugly when faced with polite discussion about making A/C explicitly canon. Queersplaining (yes I'm making that a thing now) as a straight author that [ambiguous thing you wrote] is much better than kissing or holding hands is simply not a good look. Whoever compared him to Joss Whedon was spot on; I remember identical wank 10-15 years back when people were daring to criticize some of the writing in Buffy and Firefly.

you know how the Harry Potter fandom and you know how it is more well known that the bigger the fandom the chances of maybe mass harassment of some on who says something even wrong for like a piece of media like as an example how Anime Fan's tend to go after anyone who is even uncomfortable about what is shown or how fans of celebrities do not take it well when you point out that some one they like is awful?

I have been thinking, was there a chance that some one who tried to point out the nasty implications in the series could have been chased out due to trying to criticize the work and may have done so well that people like forgot?

its like I can't help but feel paranoid that that could have happened and been forgotten. because fandoms can be awful or cruel to critics.

That wouldn't be surprising, hell I might as well say YES because I can damn near guarantee that it's happened multiple times and is still happening to this day, but to take your consideration further as to commentate on the problems of fandom culture… I am gonna go on a bit of a tangent/rant so if you don't want to read that understand that you're spot on.

Anime/Weeb culture has existed and doubled down on and incentivized by the Anime and even Manga creators/studios to such an extent that women are outright ostracized to a point that it's disgusting. I have a question?

How many men have been asked to name every single anime title that had been created in the 90’s?

How many men have been asked to name every single song on the 12 album of the Beetles in order of length and then in order that is played?

How many men have been asked to name every album made by Sleep Token?

I can, with my full chest, say that no man has been asked these sorts of questions. But a woman? They've been asked these sort of things a million times for a million different fandoms.

I myself haven't, despite being a woman, only because I rarely interact with fandoms and do my best to avoid these sorts of situations, specifically online where I can easily be assumed to be the opposite gender. But there is also another aspect to it when it comes to anime as you've indirectly pointed out:

The treatment of female characters in just about 98% of anime and 99% of Isekai anime. That being female characters are either damsels in distress or just tits on a stick.

Softcore porn because the creators honestly think that their viewers are so unabashedly stupid and lack an attention span to such a point that they think they need to shove enough tits and ass shots – doubly so for under age characters – in order to keep the viewers’ attention.

Many weebs defend this sort of behavior because and I quote “Anime isn't for girls”.

My response is always, “Then you need to stop watching every anime made by women and you also have to step away from every magical girl show ever created.”

The entire Manga and Anime industries face so much sex-based discrimination that female creators have to hide their genders through a pen-name. Your favorite anime was probably made by a woman who had to hide her gender/identity in order to get it published.

But this will never be acknowledged by the “Boy's Club” that is the Anime/Weeb community and the Industry. They don't want to acknowledge their bullshit.

They don't want to look at the opposite gender as anything other than objects. Objects to save, objects to look at, a pretty face to wank one out to.

It's so easy to piss off the Weebs that it's damn near ridiculous.

Write somewhere “Sakura is actually not useless, read the Light Novels which are actually cannon and she's actually written as a decent character.” and watch how many weebs will be pissed off by that alone.

Make a video talking about how you’re tired of being taken out of Isekai anime because the needless sexualization of the female characters just shoots your immersion down so hard that it hurts, while casually mentioning that you do like Dr. Stone and Demon Slayer, and watch as those casual mentions are ignored and get screamed at by so many weebs that you're forced to ignore it because it's clear they don't care about the other half of the audience.

Try to talk about how female characters are needlessly sexualized in their designs and it's getting to the point that you're unable to take the characters seriously when their own lore shows them to be something else entirely? Yeah good luck with how many assholes call you a “soyboy feminist who hates sexy characters”.

No matter what you do you're gonna get attacked and downed out. And that to me is horrifying.

I once worked at a school that was quite conservative, but enough of us on staff were secretly queer and socially-minded enough to stay and try to make better for kids.

One old dude was super sketchy, straight up tried to deliver a Q-anon speech in chapel, was hateful towards kids of colour, wore inappropriate clothes to swimming carnivals and was a holocaust denier.

This was also at a school in which JK Rowling's famed series was banned in the library because it celebrated witchcraft.

It makes me equal parts laugh and feel sick that this dude hated Harry Potter but now shares a common ground with JK Rowling in being a holocaust denier....

Tumblr Savior and xkit stuck to strictly the word blacklisted, but there’s a lot of words Tumblr’s version is hiding when it’s within another word 😟
