Wearing rubber bands to keep the elephants away
My father was a smart, funny, and quirky man. One of his more peculiar habits was to always wear rubber bands around his wrist. He did this as long as I can remember and apparently did so well before I was born. When I asked why he wore rubber bands around his wrist, he would always reply “To keep the elephants away”. When I asked how wearing rubber bands would keep the elephants away, he would just simply reply “you don’t see any, do you?” And we would all just laugh, that was dad being his usual comical self. He was a people person, very engaging and extremely witty so this sort of quirk just fit who he was.
It wasn’t until he was in hospice care that I finally found out why he really wore rubber bands around his wrists. A bit of a back story - my mother and father met in the second grade so they knew each other as kids long before they got married. Anyway, when my mother saw Fantasia in the movie theater as a child (she was maybe 7 or 8 years old), the sequence with the ghostly dancing elephants scared her.
My father knew this from way back when and of course wanted to comfort her and protect her from the elephants. So he started wearing the rubber bands to reassure my mother that there were no elephants around. To protect her from what scared her. My parents were married for 68 years before my father passed away last year. His entire life he wore those rubber bands as a symbol that he would take care of her and protect her. And so he did until he couldn’t anymore.
So whenever I see a rubber band, I always look around for elephants and there are never any to be found. And I smile. Thanks Dad.
