Women of Running Strong for American Indian Youth®: Faith Spotted Eagle
Tumblr media
Faith Spotted Eagle (Tunkan Inajin Win – Standing Stone) was born in Lake Andes, South Dakota in 1948 at a time when opportunities for Native women were practically nonexistent.
But Faith had faith that she could make a significant improvement in the lives of her fellow members of the Yankton Sioux Nation by attending American University in Washington DC, and earning an MA in Educational Psychology and Counseling from the University of South Dakota.
To really make a difference for her people in the local, state and federal levels, she was not satisfied simply being an activist fighting for Native rights from the outside, she strived to do so from inside government by running for a seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2006. She placed third in the Democratic Party primary out of three candidates, winning the most votes of any candidate in the majority-Native American Buffalo County in the district.
In the 2016 presidential election, Faith received one electoral vote for president of the United States, becoming the first Native American to receive an electoral college vote for president. She and Hillary Clinton are the first two women to receive such a vote.
Today, Faith is running for the District 21 seat of the South Dakota House of Representatives.
She is also a strong protector of the environment working strongly to block development of the Keystone XL Pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Tumblr media
Her ties to Running Strong for American Indian Youth®, as a founding grandmother of our longtime partner the Brave Heart Society, are strong and deep.
The Brave Heart Society was formed with the mission of bringing back traditional knowledge by “calling home the spirit of the culture.” Brave Heart grandmothers believe that culture is medicine, and the success of their many projects show the true strength of their culture.
Among those projects is “Isnati Awica Dowanpi” a coming-of-age ceremony for teenage girls, and one of the society’s greatest accomplishments. The once-forbidden and nearly lost ceremony had been forced underground, if not completely extinguished, before the 1978 American Indian Freedom of Religion Act.
As one of the seven sacred rites of the Lakota, the purpose of the Isnati is to teach young women to respect themselves, their roles and their bodies through the instruction of elder women.
Other projects of the Brave Heart Society include its “Calling Back the Spirit” healing retreat which aims to heal the traumas of abuse and addiction; the “Good Heart” garden which provides the Yankton Reservation community a place to learn practical gardening skills; and the Waterlilly Storytelling Institute, an annual gathering which provides an audience of all ages to share in the rich cultural knowledge passed down through generations.
Faith told manrepeller.com in an interview in 2017 that she didn’t wake up one day and decide she was going to be an activist.*
“Actually, growing up we didn’t even have the word activist in our vocabulary,” she said. “That’s an English word. We just had a word that means to help people in our family systems.”
And that is exactly what she has been doing throughout her life – and all of us here at Running Strong are proud to be affiliated with such a strong, remarkable woman.

Tanake - Welcome to the Catawba Language Project
Ni yat DeLesslin “Roo” George-Warren.  Yį ye katabare. Yekapįsawačα.
Tumblr media
Hi, my name is DeLesslin George-Warren, but you can call me Roo. I’m a citizen of Catawba Indian Nation and I work as an artist and educator. After graduating from music school in 2014 I found myself performing, making art, and working as an adult literacy educator in the District of Columbia.
Unfortunately, I found DC life exhausting: it felt like I was hustling 24/7 just to make enough money to pay my bills and feed myself. Life was busy and loud and expensive...so, so expensive. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy myself or find work I cared about - I did - I just couldn’t sustain my life there.
That all changed in March of this year when I received an email from Billy Mills’ foundation Running Strong for American Indian Youth announcing that I was chosen as one of the 2017 Dreamstarters.
Every year Running Strong selects 10 native youth from across Indian Country to receive a $10,000 grant to make their dream project a reality. My dream is to revitalize a vibrant Catawba language using modern technology:
This is a dream that will take many lifetimes to make a reality, but it must start somewhere. This is why I’m proposing the creation of the Catawba Language Revitalization Project (CLPR) for my dreamstarter project. The CLPR will promote and protect the Catawba language through the development of individual and community learning resources. Ideally the CLRP will continue in perpetuity following the end of the Dreamstarter grant, but during the grant itself I will focus my efforts on four educational campaigns: the creation of the first ever Catawba language app, development of culturally-based curricula to be used in a variety of contexts, the development of youth through media literacy and digital storytelling workshops, and the creation of additional public, community language resources. The Catawba language app will use games and recordings of elders speaking the language to engage Catawbas in the process of learning our language... Revitalization of our language has been a named priority for more than 27 years, when the first board of the Catawba Cultural Preservation Project identified the Catawba language as a key to the tribe’s continued existence. So, I learned this dream of a robust Catawba language from my elders, family members, and fellow tribal members. Unfortunately, unlike many other tribes, our tribe has not been able to acquire any grants or revenue streams to fund any substantive language programs. This project is an opportunity to make this dream – which was born before I was – into a reality.
Read the full text of my Dreamstarter application essays and the updated budget. All $10,000 of the grant must go to project-related costs and oversight of the grant is carried out by my mentor organization, Catawba Cultural Preservation Project.
In late April, only a few weeks after moving out of Washington and back to South Carolina, I returned to Washington, DC with my Dreamstarter mentor, Beckee Garris, to attend the Dreamstarter Academy . The Academy is a multi-day gathering of all 2017 Dreamstarters to plan, discuss, and celebrate this exciting opportunity to make our dreams come true. It was such a pleasure and honor getting to know these 9 amazing new friends and the dreams they have for their communities.
Tumblr media
In the month-and-a-half since the Dreamstarter Academy ended, I’ve been working on several parts of my project:
Creating Catawba Language Project facebook, twitter, and instagram pages where I post daily words and phrases.
Creating a Catawba Language keyboard which currently lives at catawbalanguage.org. Since Catawba has letters such as ę, č, ʰ, ɛ, ą, and Ɂ which aren’t found in the English alphabet it makes it very difficult to work with the language unless there is a keyboard. Well, now there is :-) (even if it’s still got some bugs)
Meetings with our linguist, Catawba Indian Nation’s Headstart teachers, and tribal government employees.
Preparing to help Beckee teach youth language classes at the Catawba Cultural Preservation Project’s Camp Kic-a-wah Summer Program.
Reading...a lot. I have a stack of books about language revitalization next to my bed. There’s a lot of good information that is helping me understand some of the obstacles and opportunities surrounding language work and I hope to share more later.
Tumblr media
By the beginning of July 2018 my final report will be submitted to Running Strong. That means that I have just over a year to create a community of resources and dedicated language learners to carry our language into the future. Exciting!
Some of my next steps include:
Working with the Catawba Tribal Government employees to create a motto in Catawba
Working with Headstart to create t-shirts, posters, and other materials to facilitate language learning for Headstart teachers and students
Working with my incredibly smart younger brother, Aden, on creating some electronic toys that “speak” in Catawba when children interact with them.
Continuing to work with the linguist to better understand how the language itself works: how the heck do I string together a Catawba sentence?
Continuing to research different ways of doing digital language learning. I’m excited for future posts where  I take a deeper look at programs like duolingo, mango, Rosetta Stone, and others to understand how they help folks learn
Hopefully working with youth at the Teen Center on some projects
Finally, I know that there are many indigenous youth across the world who are dedicated to revitalizing their own languages. So another goal of mine throughout this process is to post how-tos that explain, for example, how I make the Catawba Word of the Day. I hope the resource will be used by other folks in Catawba Indian Nation but also in other communities
Have thoughts, suggestions, or questions? Please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]
Hawu’h kurii. Kate,
Roo

Back to basics
I wasn’t able to race at all this weekend. It isn’t the end of the world. I will get to do so at some point so I’m not worried. The past several days I have been biking because the heat is a little intense for this time of year. It’s also great cross training.
My training partner raced on Saturday and then again this morning. He had a top ten finish in a larger 10k race and then this morning won a local 5k while pushing a stroller. Pretty impressive regardless of the smaller crowd.
I have not yet decided what I will do today. They’re calling for record heat for this time of year so if I run it’ll have to be a trail run. I hope everyone has been having a great weekend and remembering those who gave all.
