Capp-Ruth family, Roaring Heights - #19
One evening, to liven up their honeymoon period and make the most out of their remaining vacation, Ariel and Johnny drove to the Regency Arcade and Casino to play some card games. Money was never a problem to them - sometimes, they just want to have fun with it.
The following days have been really great in Roaring Heights, especially in Riverside Terrace. The district may be more residential than a commercial, but it has always been teeming with life and vibrancy - sims, animals and gnomes strolling by, and going about their days.
Ariel took this chance of a nice, sunny weather to go out and visit her childhood home and family, while Johnny was out doing some errands and opportunities. She was greeted by her father Edward Jones, who woke up early for his next shift at the hospital.
She finally met her beautiful nieces and nephew, Anne, Orlando and Jacqueline Tillman - children of her younger sister Titania with Donald Tillman. She was able to play with and cuddle them before she left just before sunset.
Upon arriving home, she got a surprising call from her uncle Kent, and wanted to talk about the interview they had a few weeks ago.

Award Season is among us. Our reviewer Actor, Producer and Journalist Alex von Roon can't wait to check out the contenders starting off with HBO' s "Succession". How do you like Alexander as "Ken" in the Hit Movie "Barbie"? Von Roon did work with the director before and enjoyed her performance in "Greenberg"
For "Bild am Sonntag" Alex also met SAG Award nominee Tony Shalhoub on set in his trailer. Some comments were very interesting. We wonder how Mr. Monk would deal with a pandemic such as Corona.
Below please find the complete list of nominations courtesy of SAGAFTRA. Which are your favorites? Comment below.

Out of the Woods (2017) came around quite a while after the first two Out books, but I can’t help but file them together, since they all, well, incorporate the word Out. There are worse arguments.
Five scenarios here. Ruth Tillman’s is a house party who-done-it, but with ghouls. This, like a masquerade ball, is a scenario frame that I always enjoy. This one comes together nicely, has some fun callbacks to some Lovecraft stories and is probably my fave in the book. Adam Gauntlett’s effort involves the guillotine, fairie lore, King Arthur, werewolves and Glaaki in a strange remix of Arthurian legends. This one is probably too clever for its own good. Chris Spivey (creator of Harlem Unbound and Haunted West) involves an integrated unit of the Civilian Conservation Corps, serpent people and the Dreamlands. I love the imagery of the half-cut tree that this scenario is built around and how it generally makes motions at a variety of social and political commentary while also being a solid scare fest. Good stuff. Lauren Roy’s scenario is one of those murky moral choice jams, but it centers on Ithaqua, the wind-walker, and I am kind of not feeling wind-walker scenarios these days. Aaron Vanek’s Trembling Giant is pretty great, though, ascribing dark secrets to the very real Pando — a colonial grove of aspen trees that is probably the largest and oldest living thing on the planet. This one goes in a similar direction as Ben Wheatley’s film In the Earth and I’m all about it.

In the Belly of the Whale
So I was going to do this scene by scene but that got way too long in my notes. Either way, it's good that I'm writing down my thoughts that way because it definitely helps me organize everything, as well as allow me to have the contents of the show on a document. The episodes will have a slightly different format with different characters appearing based on the episode, and some sections will be added or removed. This will include some personal annecdotes, as I can relate to moments within the show.
Masterlist
Warnings: Antisemitism (obviously), Spoilers for the show
General notes for the overall show
I really love how well-researched the time period was because the set and costumes were spot on
The soundtrack is INCREDIBLE
Whoever the DOP is I want to thank them because the transitions and general camera work is both satisfying and fun to watch
The repetition in the dialogue was an interesting creative choice, and there are moments I hate it but overall it's was a really cool decision
Characters
Jonah: Portrayed by Logan Lerman.
Jonah's an interesting character because Logan Lerman plays him in a way that seems similar to the way he acted as Percy Jackson in the movies. In the Riordan series, we see Percy get pushed further into the darkness as time goes on because of all the trauma he's experienced growing up. We see that in the ten episodes of Hunters with Jonah's journey. There are moments in the show where I think "that's a lot like Percy" and for this episode specifically, it's honestly just the way Logan acts. There are better examples later on.
Jonah begins as this innocent teen that had just lost his grandmother and is grieving. His grief often comes out as anger, and he takes it out on others without realizing it. He start his descend into darkness when Meyer enters his life.
Ruth - Portrayed by Jeannie Berlin.
Ruth is the Bubbe I've always wanted. My grandmother on the Jewish side of my family passed away when I was three so I never knew her. her name was Ruth. Because of that, I have a connection to both Ruth and Jonah. Definitely made her death harder to watch.
Cheeks - Portrayed by Henry Hunter Hall.
Cheeks is an interesting character. He is one of Jonah's best friends, and clearly cares for him. I can't say much now, but I really hope he's a more frequent character in season 2.
Booty - Portrayed by Caleb Emery.
I really love Booty, and I wish he was a more significant character. More thoughts on him later.
Carol - Portrayed by Ebony Obsidian.
I love/hate Carol. She seems to run into the arms of white boys, and I know she's hinted to be Jonah's love interest but I'm glad they didn't actively pursue that relationship. Again, more on that later.
Meyer - Portrayed by Al Pacino.
Dude reminds me of Dumbledore. At first glance he seems like a savior and a mentor, but as time goes on his manipulative tactics are clearer and he only does what benefits him. I had a weird feeling about him from the start, tbh. He never lied to Jonah, but he stretched the truth enough that the audience believed him to be Meyer.
Millie - Portrayed by Jerrika Hinton.
Millie gives no fucks and takes no shit from anyone. She is the perfect example of a Ravenclaw, and is the only character that isn't a complete idiot. She pieces things together quickly, and I love her a lot.
Detective Sommers - Portrayed by Tramell Tillman.
I like his character a lot and sincerely hope we see more of him in season 2.
Travis - Portrayed by Greg Austin.
Dude's really creepy and I hate the fact that I like his costuming. There were so many moments in the episode that made me really uncomfy and hate him with a burning passion, but the actor is doing a great job with his character.
Biff - Portrayed by Dylan Baker.
The actor that plays Biff is SO talented! The quick switches between accents is a hard thing to do, and he's done a great job. Biff is a selfish asshole, but Dyland Baker portrays him so well.
What I liked:
Honestly, pretty much anything that isn’t mentioned in the below section is what I liked, but there’s one specific scene that stood out to me.
At the beginning, when the trio is coming out from watching Star Wars and talking about it.
NOW
I’m not a fan of Star Wars so most of it confused me, however the conversation foreshadowed Jonah’s fate by the end of it. I just thought that was really cool, and a fantastic creative choice.
What I didn’t like:
The human chess board.
Now, okay. On a creative standpoint, as a writer/director myself, I understand what David Weil was trying to portray with this scene. I understand that he wanted to show the horrors of the Holocaust and show the extent of how bad it had gotten.
HOWEVER
As a Jew, it made me uncomfortable. Just like the Auschwitz Memorial stated, it enourages Holocaust Denial. It is more than possible to show the horrors of the Holocaust in a fictional show, by telling the truths and the facts. A great example of a fictional piece about the Holocaust is the book Daniel’s Story, which follows the experiences of the children during the war.
So yeah... not a fan of it.
Reform Jewish Confusion:
So what’s up with the menorah’s in the funeral home??? That’s just a Hanukkah thing??? What???
Also when it comes to sitting Shiva, in Reform Judaism it is common for more than just immediate family to sit Shiva. Is this different in Orthodox or Conservative Judaism?? Also, if it’s immediately family only why are like,,, most of the people there?
Explaining specific things the best I can:
Baruch HaShem means thank G-d.
Mitzvah means duty, which is why Meyer views The Hunt as Mitzvah rather than murder. Like it’s a commandment from G-d.

various once upon a time characters and ship tags as songs i’ve heard on the lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to station! :D guess who had a lot of free time during work today.
this is by no means a comprehensive list but did get v e r y long, so i’m going to stick it under the cut. chances are even if your fave is Obscure, there’s an 80% chance they’re on here. although i will admit to running out of steam when it came to the ships--if a character or ship you dig isn’t on here, you can request a song in my inbox if you’d like. <3 and let me know if the links don’t work!
the characters are in complete random order with no rhyme or reason, but the songs are purposeful; headphones are recommended but not required. i hope y’all find this inspiring at least a tiny bit! enjoy~

Bacon family, Roaring Heights
After being left by David Morgan for his mistress, and along with him their children, and her second and third husband passing away, Donna never imagined that she would heal from this traumatic past and finally have the courage to start fresh and move on, with all her children by her side. Can she finally keep her family intact, or will history repeat itself?
Donna Bacon (formerly Donna Morgan), and her children Kevin, Olive, and Janel, live together at a modest family home called Purple Palace in 51 Sunburst Street, one of the suburban neighborhood of Roaring Heights. They are neighbors with the Lytle family, Quiroz family, Shear family, Ruth family, and Meyers family (Irene Meyers’ son Simon and his family). Donna and Olive are faeries, while Kevin and Janel didn’t inherit Donna’s fae powers. In their neighborhood, vampires, werewolf, faeries, and humans coexist peacefully, with many of them hanging out at the local supernatural hangout Varg’s Tavern, located in their neighborhood.
Donna Bacon is a good mother, a natural cook and a green thumb, and works hard in the culinary career. Donna’s tragedies started when her first husband David Morgan cheated with their former neighbor Samantha Cassat, and impregnated her. Then, he left Donna and brought along their children with him and Samantha. Donna was so heartbroken, grief-stricken, and depressed to find all her children gone. He didn’t care for David much after she found out about his infidelity, but to find that her whole world, her children, are all gone and moved out of town with him, she didn’t know what to do after that. She was in despair for months, and extended into years.
She found another reason to live and survive, when she met Albert Tillman in one of her grocery store trips. She was so smitten and charmed by him, that she didn’t care that much about his shady job in the old building near her home. after a few dates and hangouts, they finally decided to settle down, and Albert moved in with him. They have two children, Joseph and Diana Tillman, before Albert passed away due to old age. Both her children with him are humans, and thus, do not possess Donna’s youth and immortality. The thought of outliving all her children entered her mind a few times, and planned attempts to get rid of her fae powers, but couldn’t go through with it. Instead, she decided to use her fae powers to take care and guide all her children, and make the most of their time together. Joseph and Diana Tillman all moved out after they became young adults, and now have their own families. Donna loves hanging out with her grandchildren.
After her second husband passed away, Donna met another man who would be her future husband, Chad Bacon. He was a former freelance singer, then shifted to an athletic career. They have three children: Kevin, Olive, and Janel. Janel was born shortly before Chad passed away to old age. Among her and Chad’s children, only Olive inherited her fae powers.
Kevin is a virtuoso and a happy-go-lucky guy, who’s famous with the ladies in town, especially during his high school days. He now works as a musician in the local theater, and dreams of being a rock star. His sister, Olive, is a genius girl and animal lover, but doesn’t like children and water. She dreams of having many pets as possible. There are weird times where her family caught her “talking to herself.” Both of them formed a small band and love jamming together in public places as a hobby. Janel, on the other hand, is a hot-headed and clumsy girl, but still a good and friendly kid. With proper care and guidance from Donna and her older siblings, she would be fine in life.

40 is the new 35 when it comes to NFL quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Drew Brees
Back in the day, it was less common for quarterbacks to excel past their mid 30’s. Sure, there was Warren Moon, Vinny Testaverde, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, and John Elway. But that short list is dwarfed by a painfully longer one filled with Hall of Fame quarterbacks who seemed to crap out well short the 40 year marker.
Even these all time greats experienced precipitous drop offs in their mid to late 30’s. For Roger Staubach, Steve Young and Fran Tarkenton, it came at 37. For Bart Starr, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino and Dan Fouts, 36. For Johnny Unitas, George Blanda, Bob Griese, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, 35. For Otto Graham, Joe Namath, and Troy Aikman, 34.
This makes it all the more amazing that so many older quarterbacks are still playing at an elite level in today’s NFL. There might very well be five to seven future Hall of Famers starting in the league right now. Tom Brady and Drew Brees are officially in their 40’s. Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger are both 36. Aaron Rodgers is 34 and Matt Ryan is 33; and both signed extensions in the past couple years at times in their careers when former quarterbacks usually retired.
It’s true, quarterbacks are more protected by the rules of the NFL than ever before, and this certainly has played a part in their new found longevity. In 1978, the league restricted contact between defensive backs and receivers to within five yards of the line of scrimmage. This resulted in a dramatic increase in passing attempts per game, which in turn suddenly made the quarterback position more valuable.
Since 1993, quarterbacks could simply escape the pocket and throw a pass out of bounds without incurring an intentional grounding penalty. This made it harder for pass rushers to get to them before they got rid of the ball, therefore avoiding a sack or quarterback hit.
Roughing the passer penalties have become more and more common as the definition has broadened to include late hits, forcible hits below the knee, hitting the helmet, and landing on the quarterback with one’s own body weight.
Last year, former Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was flagged twice for roughing the passer while making what seemed to be perfectly executed sacks. Ironically, it was probably a hit on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers the previous season that may have led to the rule change that cost the Packers two victories a season later.
One would think that with these modern day quarterbacks dropping back more times throughout a game than ever before, their careers would be shorter, not longer. That’s why I think there’s more to it than the implementation of more rules that inherently protect the quarterback.
Because they played before GMO’s and modern day fast food chains, many old school players of the past had access to better food. But that doesn’t mean they took full advantage of their timely access to healthier lives. Joe Namath smoked cigarettes on the sidelines for god’s sake.
I doubt they were paying attention to the pH of their foods like Tom Brady or paying upwards of $200K a year like James Harrison did on therapy treatments like massage and acupuncture. The modern day athlete has to be almost obsessive in their quest for success. Talent alone won’t cut it anymore if you want to stick around in today’s NFL.
Extremely strict diets, fitness, and recovery programs have taken the place of binge eating like Babe Ruth, snorting cocaine like Diego Maradona, and binge drinking like Lawrence Taylor. The two oldest current quarterbacks in the NFL also happen to keep two of the strictest diet and fitness regimens across all sports.
Drew Brees has been working with Todd Durkin in San Diego, CA since his days with the Chargers. Brees loves working with Durkin every offseason. “Whenever I come back for the summertime to get in the best shape of my life for training camp, he’s always got something new or a few new things that make me feel like we’re way ahead of everybody else.”
What’s interesting to me, however, is that even though Brees isn’t Durkin’s biggest, fastest, or most agile athlete, he may have benefited the most simply because he’s willing to work harder than everyone else. And that’s saying a lot considering Durkin’s vast client list also includes Carson Palmer, Aaron Rodgers, Darren Sproles, LaDainian Tomlinson, Mark Sanchez, Alex Smith, Brandon Cooks, Reggie Bush, Charles Tillman, Zach Ertz, John Brown, Dontrelle Inman, Malcom Floyd, Ryan Griffin, Chase Daniel, Sean Canfield, Josh Freeman, and my fellow Saints Ignatius College Prep alumnus, Igor Olshansky.
”Drew Brees, first and foremost, is a special person. I will probably not have the opportunity to work with a guy like that in the next 20 years. His concentration and focus are amazing, and he works extremely hard. He’s not the biggest guy or the fastest guy, but he’s going to beat you with his athleticism, his smarts and because he’s such a competitor. I don’t care what it is, the dude wants to win at anything. He’s always restless and never satisfied,” said Durkin.
Brees is absolutely methodical in his training and game preparation. “I know where I’m going to be at a specific time,” he says. “I know what I’m going to be doing; I know what needs to be accomplished for me to feel confident and go out there and play at the highest level.”
His focus has shifted from the archaic meathead approach to training he learned in college at Purdue to a more functional and efficient approach. “I think maybe those [exercises] served the purpose at the time.” Drew says. “But now I’ve wised up to the things that I need to do in a position-specific and functional fitness kind of way to benefit me as a quarterback.”
If you have 30 minutes to kill, watch this video of Brees’ workouts with Durkin.
I’ve been a fitness trainer and instructor for 12 years and I’m telling you, Durkin is the real deal. I love his approach to fitness. I stopped lifting heavy weights years ago and have focused more on agility ladder work, TRX training, yoga, and generally maximizing my strength and endurance gains while also minimizing sheering forces on my joints, tendons, and ligaments.
Tom Brady takes his fitness protocol in an even more holistic, and dare I say, Eastern direction. He and his trainer/business partner Alex Guerrero founded the TB12 training facility next to Gillette Stadium in 2013. Guerrero, though highly controversial, isn’t a total quack in my opinion.
Of course claiming his supplements could curemultiple sclerosis, AIDS, concussions, and other diseases with no shred of testing or evidence based proof was incredibly disingenuous and downright dangerous. Settling with multiple investors out of court for defrauding them is no better either.
But I have to hand it to him: he has kept Tom Brady in phenomenal shape to survive and thrive in the NFL past the age of 40. Guerrero earned a Masters Degree in traditional Chinese medicine from a school in LA that closed after losing its’ accreditation. He is not a physical therapist and does not hold any Western degrees that would qualify him to do a lot of the work he does with his clients.
Yet, Guerrero is highly respected and retained by many professional athletes including Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, Willie McGinest, Jimmy Garoppolo, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Chris Hogan. Instead of focusing on lifting huge weights and tearing muscle fibers, Guerrero prescribes more body weight moves and exercises with resistance bands that are designed to increase the muscles’ “pliability.”
Brady often sees Guerrero twice daily and receives intensely specific massages in which he tenses the muscles while Guerrero massages them. The goal is to lengthen the muscles and increase their flexibility so that Brady can withstand the weekly car crash that is an NFL football game.
The other main focus is to reduce inflammation in the body by maintaining a strict diet. Brady does not eat white flour, white sugar, MSG, iodized salt, coffee, caffeine, alcohol, fungus, dairy, nightshade vegetables and most types of fruit. This diet may sound strange, but it’s most likely derived from the Ayurvedic tradition which is over 5,000 years old and trusted throughout Asia as much as we trust Western medicine.
The part where Brady and Guerrero lose me is by making sweeping statements like everyone should drink 25 glasses of water a day, or eat this exact diet, or that everyone needs to consume TB12 branded electrolytes or wear TB12 branded muscle recovery pajamas.
I’m not 6’4” and 230lbs; I’m 5’6” and 130lbs, so I don’t need more than 65 ounces of water a day, unless Tom wants me to get hyponatremia and die of brain damage. Don’t just replicate a professional athlete’s diet and fitness regimen. These have been specially tailored to them. If you work for Google and sit at a desk for eight hours a day, you probably shouldn’t eat and drink exactly what Tom Brady does.
It’s okay to be skeptical too. Brees isn’t much more trust-worthy with his shameful peddling of Advocare products. It’s important to rely on evidence-based research conducted by independent bodies without a financial stake in the products they test. Even more important, think for yourself and do your own research before listening to athletes that have a financial stake in the health philosophies they are sharing with the public.
If you aren’t hip to eating according to your Ayurvedic dosha (My dosha is roughly 70% Pitta, 20% Vata, 10% Kapha) like Brady seems to, you can go the Western route and still learn something about how to function at a higher level, no matter what your lifestyle is. Drew and Brittney Brees got food sensitivity blood tests done back in 2004. That’s when Brees found he had significant sensitivities to gluten, dairy, and certain nuts.
“As you can imagine, I was shocked because I was consuming most of these things every day. And just to think how long I’ve had these sensitivities and had continued to feed them. Guys coming in fresh out of college are used to going to the training table and eating and drinking whatever they’re given.”
“In many cases, I see myself as a veteran player – pulling those young guys aside and, as part of teaching young players how to be a pro, talking to them about their diet, their sleep habits and their recovery. They’ll start to ask questions like, ‘Hey Drew, what do you do?’ That’s when I explain to them that I use coconut milk and almond milk products.”
It’s not just Brees’ direct teammates like Reggie Bush, Sean Canfield, Chase Daniel, Brandin Cooks, and Ryan Griffin who have followed his lead when it comes to diet and fitness. “It took the fourth or fifth time hearing, ‘You need to do this,’ and then reading about Drew Brees and Tom Brady and others who are your peers doing it,” Kirk Cousins said. “I realized, ‘If I want to hang with these guys, then it’s time to stop playing around.’”
18 of the 32 quarterbacks starting in the NFL are over 30 years old, and by September that list will grow to 21 with the 30th birthdays of Cam Newton, Tyrod Taylor, and Andrew Luck. Even though five quarterbacks were drafted in the first round last year, there’s a good chance less than a third of the starting quarterbacks in the league will be younger than 30 years old.
40 might be the new 35, and it’s not just because of some changes in the rules. Players are spending highly on optimizing their health and performance through a multitude of practices both new and incredibly old. Cousins is right, it’s time to stop playing around.

Stepping away from what we've been working on for a moment, we thought you'd be interested to hear that the Entries are now open for London's urban design awards. London has been hosting the awards biennially for the last 14 years.
The awards, sponsored by the City of London, recognise exceptional designs by showcasing innovative projects. Awards will go to “exceptional projects that represent visionary thinking and raise the bar for design excellence,” said Gregg Barrett, city planner.
Tillman Ruth Robinson was the big winner at the 2019 Urban Design Awards, with a hand in three of the winning structures – including the one that took the new people’s choice category, the Boler Mountain chalet. Photo attached.

This piece by Ruth Kitchin Tillman looks at librarianship more broadly, however the section “The Ways We Treat Each Other” speaks to issues of empathy in our profession.
