Baskar Kalithash, a 32-year-old married Indian national, embarked on a journey to Singapore with dreams of providing a better life for his family. Like many migrant workers, he faced the challenges of living away from home, working tirelessly to support his loved ones. However, his life took a devastating turn on the night of May 26th, 2024.

Baskar had fallen from his room on the 4th floor, suffering severe injuries. Paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived promptly, and he was rushed to the National University Hospital (NUH) at 1:17 am. The extent of his injuries was grave; Baskar had sustained multiple fractures, including a spinal injury, and his life was hanging by a thread.

Emergency neck surgery was performed immediately on May 26th to address his life-threatening injuries. For more than 18 days, Baskar remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), fighting for his life. The medical team worked tirelessly to stabilize his condition, and on June 11th, he underwent a second surgery, a tracheostomy, to assist him in breathing.

Despite these efforts, Baskar’s journey to recovery is far from over. He was shifted to the high dependency ward, unable to talk or walk. The doctors have determined that his spinal injury requires at least six weeks of intensive rehabilitation. The road ahead is fraught with challenges, but Baskar remains resilient, holding onto hope for a better tomorrow.

The cost of his extensive medical treatment has been staggering. As of July 11th, 2024, the hospital bills have soared to SGD 180,000. For a migrant worker like Baskar, this amount is insurmountable. He and his family are facing an overwhelming financial burden, unable to bear the weight of these expenses. His insurance coverage only covers SGD 60,000 and that's not enough to help Baskar.

Today, Baskar needs our help. He has given so much in pursuit of a better life, and now he needs us to stand by him in his time of need. Rescue dogs from Asia helping to sniff out survivors after Turkey quake

SINGAPORE – As search and rescue teams continue to seek out survivors among the rubble in the aftermath of last Monday’s earthquake in Turkey and Syria, rescue dogs from Singapore and its South-east Asian neighbors Malaysia and Thailand have emerged as key members of these operations.

These trained canines and their keen sense of smell are able to work in tandem with the human members of the rescue teams and access areas that humanitarian aid officers find difficult to reach.

Their senses are especially useful in the two countries, where hundreds of buildings have collapsed due to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake, leaving more than 37,000 dead and thousands more missing so far.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force team sent four canines along with their 68-man Operation Lionheart contingent to the south-eastern Turkish town of Kahramanmaras, near the quake’s epicenter.

The dogs, including two labrador retrievers Frenchy and Rizzo, have been deployed to sniff out areas that could become potential rescue sites, helping the teams assess the need to use search equipment to home in on victim locations, said the SCDF on Facebook.

Thailand’s search and rescue team in Turkey, including its two sniffer dogs Sierra and Sahara, has also drawn attention on social media, according to Thai daily The Nation.

The female golden retrievers in the team from the country’s urban search and rescue team have raised awareness of the role sniffer dogs play in these missions.

Photos of seven-year-old Sierra and six-year-old Sahara have been shared widely on social media, along with an outpouring of concern for those affected by the catastrophe.

Both dogs had passed training certified by the International Rescue Dog Organisation and have been tasked to search for earthquake victims in the rubble.

The Thai team started work on Saturday in Hatay, a southern Turkish province on the Mediterranean coast that borders Syria, where wintry conditions have seen temperatures plunge to 2 deg C.

From Malaysia, tracker dogs Denti and Frankie have been sent on their first mission abroad, less than two months after their high-profile search and rescue job during the landslide at Batang Kali near Genting Highlands that killed 31 campers.

Both Denti, a labrador retriever, and English springer spaniel Frankie were put on an 11-hour flight to Istanbul, before being dispatched to southern Turkey for their mission to locate casualties of the earthquake in 12-hour shifts, The Star newspaper reported.

On Saturday, they discovered and rescued five family members who had been trapped under the rubble of their residential building for six days, Bernama reported.

A Malaysian tactical operations official said the dogs were trained to find victims, alive or dead.

They were accompanied by their handlers, said unit chief Donny Chap.

He told The Star that the two canines, who received “Hero Malaysia” medals following their efforts during December’s landslide, had been given sufficient rest before their latest deployment.

OCBC Corporate Speedway 2024

The OCBC team came into speedway with some corporate pressure on our shoulders. After winning last year,there’s expectation internally that we’ll do it again. Structurally the team has had a few changes - including the addition of ex-National rider Joel Foo - so we’re hopeful of a good result.

The race itself has shrunk with only 6 teams signing up this year. Old adversaries SCDF are here but joined by powerful teams from AWS and Eastern Pacific. Due to the limited teams, the format has changed and we’re riding with 6 teams on the track with 1 team removed in the first 2 rounds. This turns out to be a bonus for us and actually made it easier than previous years. The new goal being to ensure that at least 1 rider gets dropped from the group so we can all progress.

The qualifier was busy with 6 teams on the track. The first pair of riders immediately saw one of the teams get distanced. So there was minimal pressure on Joel and I to do anything. We agreed with AWS to keep the speed high so the dropped team couldn’t get back on. Tribal crashed out on the uturn and it made it even easier!

Semis was similar. EPS were distanced in the first pair and we only had to maintain the gap to go through. We did this easily & could see that AWS were the real competition as the other teams seemed on the limit.

For the finals, we were ready for some proper racing and we knew some attacking would be required. However luck was on our side. In lap 3 of the first pair, there was a touch of wheels and all the riders bar 3 went down. Fortunately Wai Mun & Jason avoided the carnage and were clear. The rest of the teams were in a mess and 1 AWS had to literally walk his broken bike all the back to the start. Joel and myself decided to hammer our ride anyway and ended up actually lapping the 2nd place team. We sat up at the end for a money shot celebration for the staff magazine. A bad way to win the race but a win is a win!

In the Club Speedway, Quantum Racing smashed it and we got both our teams through to the final. The boys dominated the race and had a 10s gap with 4 laps to go. Amazingly Matt Brittany closed the gap alone but we still had enough to win the sprint and make it three-in -a-row!
