In a war there's no time to explore or search for things that can be useful, or even search for clues, less with the fact that youre leading an army. There was no puzzle, no mistery to solve or objects that needed to be obtained, just plain fight and confrontation, not leaving space for investigation or even a good rest in town

They have a point, without exploring they wouldn't have the arsenal that they carry; powerful items that can kill a whole army of monsters, a gift left by the hero before them to help, shinies. All that is really useful when you want to save the whole kingdom

lets not forget all the weapons that you can get on HW, there are some that are like, crazy powerful, and the materials get from the enemies are also really helpful

Also the fact that the closest thing that he had as a dungeon were the Divine Beast and the shrines, which both of them lacked a lot of things that were usually in the clasic zelda's dungeons, like keys, mini bosses, special object and pots.

let's talk abt video games - cruelty squad

cruelty squad's premise is very simple: it is an immersive sim (yes, like deus ex and dishonored) where your goal is to take down your targets for each level, who is usually a (rival company, insubordinate subsidiary) CEO by any means necessary. it is grotesque, clunky, jank, and will destroy your senses.

and it is the best game i've played in a long time. do not mistake cruelty squad's simplicity or grotesqueness for a lack of depth, effort, or intelligence— this is absolutely a work of art.

when cruelty squad says "any means necessary", they mean ANY means. this game COMMITS to player freedom. whether you go in guns blazing, turning the level into a pathfinding platformer, sneaking your way around an alternate route, or breaking the game's geometry, go ham. you will be punished, challenged, and rewarded no matter which way you go.

enemies are so straightforward you will almost instantly die in 2 bullets the moment you are detected. in many other games that'd be incredibly frustrating, but that frustration gets quickly turned into a legitimate space for a player to explore options. and after you're done clearing enemies, to make money, you must harvest their organs and sell them on the in-game stock market. yes.

it's not exactly clear /when/ cruelty squad is set, but it is absolutely clear about its cyberpunk themes. (except i suppose you can replace the cyber with gross biological body augmentations like fartvomiting from your feet to double jump)

other cyberpunk stories still have the "😭 its so bleak and sad but i guess the tech and aesthetic is still kinda rad and cool", but cruelty squad doesn't give you a moment to want you to live in its absurdity. it has the same commitment to its thesis as it does with its level design: that capitalism is so miserable and stupid. the second mission, the target who is a startup founder who wasted company funds by buying many Chunko Pops, literally has searching for him in a posh executive village with the dumbest looking architecture (built over an ancient mass grave). every single NPC in this game spouts the most mundane, miserable, "i've been stuck in my desk job underpaid too long" vibed lines. the most expensive upgrade in the game is having your own house and your own clothes.

one of the things i find most genius about cruelty squad is how good it is at pretending to be "bad". the game is ugly as sin, and all that does is reinforce its themes and the experience. and even then, the game is surprisingly readable and clear, enemies on screen are easy to identify, and it's not /hard/ to find things on the UI despite the initial mess. there are hidden collectables, paths, and easter eggs in every level that really do feel like the classic video game approach to level design. there's a really interesting take on adaptive difficulty that ties incredibly well with the narrative. it's insane how much thought went into it despite what it wants you to believe

for the rest, it's hard for me to say what hasn't already been said by other reviews. i think cruelty squad is a masterpiece; it is focused and committed to what it wants to be, and i think that's what makes it so /good/. it's right up there with breath of the wild, dishonored, and the first dark souls. and gorbino's quest, who could forget gorbino's quest?

extra notes:

- the secret levels are even more clear about how much thought goes into the level design, this is actually where the more "traditional" level layouts are and for some of them, you wouldn't even think they're from the same game

- the game is funny as heck. the mechanics and visuals are funny enough to laugh at, but the writing is sharp as well. the equipment descriptions are hilarious. grappendix.

- the stock market updates in real time and gets affected by the levels in the game if you're paying attention to what happens, which is so cool to me

- the latter parts of the game get pretty philosophical and existential, they're lovely texture

what…   an   incredibly   curious   place.   from   the   general   layout   to   the   intricate   architecture   itself,   this   place   was   quickly   shaping   up   to   be   somewhere   Solstice   would've   never   expected   to   find   themselves   in.   it   was   nothing   short   of   fascinating   if   you   asked   their   honest   opinion    –    there   was   a   multitude   of   things   for   them   to   analyze.   even   the   language   was   entirely   different   from   what   they   were   used   to   hearing.   fortunately,   it   only   took   roughly   an   hour's   time   of   quiet   observation   to   be   able   to   memorize   and   translate   the   language,   committing   it   to   their   memory   banks   for   later   use,   knowing   they'd   need   to   communicate   with   the   locals   to   figure   out   where   they   were.

both   Faustus   and   Astraeus   constantly   reminded   them   it   was   unwise   to   wander   too   much,   but   wasn't   the   whole   purpose   of   their   existence   to   learn?   why   leave   themselves   confined   to   a   specific   space   when   there   were   worlds   out   there   begging   to   be   explored?   this   one   even   had   it's   own   charm   to   it    –    it's   seemed   older…   yet   younger   as   well. 

at   some   point   they'd   stopped   by   a   fountain,   sitting   on   the   bench   near   it's   edge   and   just   watching   the   water   spill   from   it's   openings.   they   found   it's   carvings   beautiful   and   loved   the   way   the   sunlight   reflected   in   the   surface   of   the   small   pool.   to   their   surprise,   they   saw   what   they   recognized   to   be   money   glittering   at   the   bottom   of   it.   that…   was   interesting?   as   they   recalled,   humans   were   particularly   fond   of   their   money,   so   why   on   earth   were   they   tossing   it   into   such   a   place?   as   analytical   as   always,   they   lifted   their   gaze   up   in   search   of   someone   to   satisfying   these   never   ending   slew   of   questions   and   piqued   one   to   the   first   person   to   pass   by.   “   pardon   me,   but   why   do   you   throw   money   into   this   thing?   is   it   not…   a   pain   to   take   it   back   out?   does   wet   money   serve   some   purpose?   ”   poor   Daisuke.

Spring Mountain Ranch, 1970

The springs of this ranch area made it one of the oldest settlements Las Vegas Valley by Native Americans. By the 1830s it had become a campsite for Euro-American explorers using the Spanish Trail.

Sgt. James B. Wilson and George Anderson established Sand Stone Ranch here in 1876. Their heirs operated the ranch for decades. It was also called Wilson Ranch. On the night of 1/17/42 a rancher in the area witnessed an airplane, "passing over in the twilight … the tail was bobbing up and down and otherwise acting in a peculiar manner." The plane crashed and killed Carole Lombard and 21 others. Tweed Wilson, grandson of the ranch founder, was among the guides who led the search party to the crash site.

Chet Lauck bought the property in '48. He built the ranch house from sandstone and redwood, and renamed it Bar Nothing Ranch.

German Baroness Vera Krupp bought the ranch in '55, expanded, added the pool, and changed the name to Spring Mountain Ranch. Here on a night in '59 she was tied with wire and robbed of a 33-carat diamond. It was next owned by Howard Hughes, who never came to the ranch.

In '72 California auto dealers Fletcher Jones and William Murphy bought the 520 acre ranch from Hughes Tool Co. and announced plans to building a housing community that would support 2000 people. The proposal was defeated by the Nevada Open Space Council and Red Rock Advisory Committee.

The property was sold to the State of Nevada, along with 80 acres at Pine Creek and rights to 52 springs in the valley and surrounding mountains. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park was established in '73. Under the original name Sand Stone Ranch it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, 4/2/76.

Many of the buildings on the property have been renovated and restored including the sandstone cabins, blacksmith shop, outhouse and the hay and horse barn. Interior improvements were made throughout the ranch house. The above ground irrigation pipes were replaced with underground irrigation and trails were built for the park itself.

Episode Five: Finding your aesthetic

Everyone has an aesthetic. An aesthetic is defined as simply the look and feel of a setting, including colors, atmosphere, and style. It helps create a setting's mood and can give clues about the world we want to live in.

The aesthetic sets the overall tone and establishes a visual identity.

Now you may ask yourself “Why do I need an aesthetic?” or “Why is it important?”

Having an aesthetic or a cohesive visual identity is important because it helps to create a memorable and unique look for who you are. In our last episode, I talked about dressing for yourself. Believe it or not, how we dress is a big part of our aesthetic.

It’s a key component on a physical level. Your wardrobe is a physical representation of who you are. Personal style and preferences. It can deeply reflect your personality, lifestyle, career, or cultural background. Sometimes even a current mood or mindset. I know when I am in a good mood, I dress in my favorite colors or my best clothes.

It’s a beautiful thing to have, knowing your aesthetic and showing it to the world.

But how is it shown?

There are many ways an aesthetic can be shown to others. The most common methods include the choice of clothing, home decor, artwork, music, movies, or other forms of entertainment.

Additionally, your aesthetic can be expressed through lifestyle choices and other activities. For example, someone who has that clean girl aesthetic oftentimes is someone who eats very healthily and works out regularly. That is how they express themselves in their creative way.

And like I mentioned in the last episode, finding your aesthetic can take time and experimentation. But there are different resources available to help you find your aesthetic. Websites like Pinterest and Tumblr are great resources for finding your aesthetic. Literally just going onto Pinterest and searching up “aesthetic” and going through the images to see what appeals to you is how we find our specific aesthetics.

Our aesthetics come from deep within. It is something that we find appealing, positive, inspiring, and beautiful. It is something we see ourselves in or a lifestyle we see ourselves living. With the right aesthetic, it can help us see how we want to live our lives and it can motivate us to take action in our lives. To learn, thrive, and explore.

Finding an aesthetic can deeply assist in making life choices. In selecting careers, home architectures, and even ways of expressing love. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve gone onto Pinterest and found an image of a cute couple dancing in the rain and wanting that for myself. Trust me, Pinterest is essentially the infinite vision board. And the aesthetic is the reigning queen of the land.

From wanting to feel like the wife of the Italian Don or the cozy cottage-core princess Pinterest and Tumbler are the way to go. In my personal experience, creating a vision board filled with an aesthetic that you love and can see yourself living in accentuates the feeling and can motivate you to keep working, saving, and moving forward til you are walking around in the aesthetic of your ideal life.

Finding the right aesthetic for yourself and your space can take time and patience. It’s important to remember that finding your aesthetic is a part of your self-discovery journey. It’s not a destination that can be reached overnight or accomplished in one day. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself time to explore the world of the many aesthetics life has to offer. And be open, you may find one that looks surprisingly appealing to you.

I, myself, have been on the journey of self-discovery for almost 3 years. It is a process that requires some deep thought, and a little imagination, and sometimes can even be a little uncomfortable. Sometimes we have to be comfortable with being a little uncomfortable.

When I was doing some soul-searching through Pinterest, I was almost trembling in my boots when I saw the life aesthetic I wanted for myself. I chose the old-money aesthetic. High-waisted pants with Ralph Lauren shirts, palettes of blues, browns, and beige, going to jazz clubs and equestrian events and feeling like high society.

That is the aesthetic I wanted for not just my wardrobe but for myself. I wanted to feel like a beautiful, sophisticated, and classy woman. Charlotte York from Sex and The City is one of the best muses I have on my Pinterest board.

It’s the aesthetic I chose for myself and I am still in the process of accomplishing it to this day.

Be patient with yourself. It’s ok to take some time to put this beautiful plan for your life into action. And it can be hard. I’m not going to lie, it can be a hard road to walk. Don’t let anybody or anything stand in your way of the aesthetic you envision for yourself.

Don’t be afraid to take that first step because I can promise you, that once you look in the mirror wearing the clothes you saw on your vision board, living the life you once thought was just fantasy. You’ll soon realize how empowered you’ll feel once you’re able to look in the mirror and tell yourself “I did it”.

I can promise you, that a beautiful feeling of satisfaction and confidence, will be better than anything else in the world.

I believe you, my beautiful readers. I believe in you because I know deep inside you lies the power to look at an image, see yourself in that image, and bring it to life. Because we only get one life, why not live it in the right aesthetic?

After reading your list, I'm really curious about some of the characters and what you planned for them.

Like, what led David to become the Punisher ? How did Felix become Star Lord ? Why is Knight DORMAMMU and Hillbilly GORR ???

Something else I was wondering : what about Vigo ? And Benedict Baker ?

Some of the stories are ones I'll build on more once I get to them, but I do have general backstory/ideas for such on each one!

For David: His backstory as punisher delves more into his sexuality, and bigotry-related trauma. Due to a hate crime that leads to the death of his friend/love interest, it hardens his heart towards criminals, specifically ones who base their crimes on prejudices. He takes up the moniker of "Punisher," dropping off the grid and focusing primarily on melee combat to subdue, even sometimes kill, his enemies. However, he does take up marksmanship when his vigilantism gets him more involved with taking out mobs/mafia cells.

For Felix: He and Élodie's backstories entwine due to their families being a part of the same secret society of The Imperiatti, exploring ruins and excavation sites. Both find relics at different points in time; Élodie's ancient and divine in origin, Felix's of an extra-terrestrial origin. However, Felix found his while he was a teenager, Élodie as a young adult. The one Felix finds is actually a beacon that had crashed on earth decades prior, and upon interacting with the device, it becomes active, alerting a band of space pirates scoping out the galaxy for treasures/bounties. I'll elaborate more in his story, but he is more engineer/architecturally-knowledged, being able to build/repair ships and sell them in the intergalactic market. *For Élodie, hers is a statuette of the goddess Ọya, and upon finding it, is bestowed the power over the weather, becoming the Earth-UNKNOWN's 'Storm.'*

For Tarhos: This one, I was a little more adventurous with his backstory. I wanted him to still be tied to Vittorio due to their canon lore for Dead by Daylight, but I don't feel like he would be as big of a villain as Dr. Doom, who I assigned as Talbot/Blight. In his backstory, after Vittorio disappears into the fog where he's trained in magic by the Ancient one, Tarhos finds Vittorio's scrawlings and notes on the symbols after searching for years. Upon finding them, he recklessly tries to put them to practice, causing the deaths of the members of his pack, but also learning he can summon their souls from beyond. As a newly-powered necromantic berserker, he creates a break in dimensions, practically forcing himself into the Entity's domain in search for Vittorio. *I should also note that his halloween cosmetic also inspired me, due to his head making him look similar to Dormammu in the comics.*

For Max/Hillbilly: With this one, I had an interesting time trying to string together a villain that fit this character. In his canon lore, he was shut away since birth due to his deformity; due to the setting in which he was raised, I could very well see his parents also weaving religion into his isolation, making him resentful towards the god he was berated into believing in. His one obsession is his name, since the only thing he is referred to by his family and any company they bring is 'Boy.' After killing his parents, he still doesn't know his name, but he knows he wants nothing that ties him to the people who practically imprisoned him his entire life. Looking down at all of the bodies before him, all the blood and gore, he dubs himself 'Gorr.' The Entity still finds him, and through his rage, it manipulates him, convincing him that the ones who would try to stop it's expansion hates him, just like his family. It further convinces him by even giving him an axe with it's eldritch energy embedded in it.

As for Vigo and Benedict, I feel the latter of the two would be the Earth-UNKNOWN equivalent to one of the Watchers, but being the only one, recording any possible information on the Entity and it's mission. He would keep his recordings in a pocket dimension accessible through the Entity's realm, working alongside the Ancient One. With Vigo, I feel like he would be a living incarnation/reincarnation of one of the Vishanti, sent into the Entity's domain to try and find a weakness in order to stop it.
