ೃ࿔ "MARLEY AND ME" MASTERLIST
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you’re a single mom just doing the best that she can to make ends meet. ellie can’t help but think that you're the kindest, most beautiful girl that she’s ever met. compared to taking care of a little girl that's in her terrible twos, coming to terms with the fact that you’re a lesbian is a walk in the park. awkward first encounters, ellie’s broken gay-dar, and her overwhelming urge to take care of the care-giver. . . the road to domesticity is a long one, but it’s well worth the pining that it takes to get there.
total word count: 17.1k
✮ chapter one- ellie somehow manages to embarrass herself a total of four times in front of the prettiest girl she has ever seen in her life. the upside is that you don't seem to mind. you don't seem put off by the fact that she's a total loser and she sees no issue that you're a young mother. the only thing that is proving to be quite the problem is her lack of a gay-dar. ellie has no clue whether or not you're interested in women. . . and she's far too shy to come out and ask straight away.
✮ chapter two- ellie had all but given up on the idea of ever seeing the beautiful stranger again. she had your number saved in her phone but had been too terrified to reach out to you. rejection is a bitch. it's a miracle when you run into ellie at the grocery store. . . or just dumb luck. you land yourself an explanation for her lack of communication and she lands herself a date. . . or so she hopes. she still hasn't gotten that gay-dar fixed yet.
✮ chapter three- who knew a broken screen door could somehow be the best wingman you could have ever asked for? seven stitches and an urgent care visit later, the two of you find yourselves well and truly aquatinted with one another. (smut warning)
✮ chapter four- you aren't the only person in your household that is absolutely besotted. your daughter has taken quite the shine to ellie as well, and you couldn't be happier. though the two of you haven't put a label on things, you're starting to believe that the two of you don't really need to ask the dreaded "what are we" question. you and marley are ellie's girls. . . and she hopes it always stays that way.
✮ chapter five- to be continued. . .
ೃ࿔ fic “soundtrack”

clementine - elliott smith

word count: 1044 warnings: none notes: i was in the middle of writing a totally different fic but i suddenly got way more inspiration for this so i kinda had to do it LOL (p.s listen to mazzy star or slowdive while u read this)
“I thought I was so obvious about it,” you say with a laugh.
Matty shrugs. “Maybe I just couldn’t believe I deserve someone like you.”
You tap his shoe with yours, a simple sign of affection. It’s easy with him. It’s easy to say nothing and everything while you lie next to Matty on your rooftop in the dead of night. It’s that early summer sort of night, the type where the air smells sweet and cool, and the stars are brighter than you previously remembered. You wonder if the dot in the sky that seems to sparkle is Venus. A moment of comfortable quiet falls before you prod him further. “Someone like me?”
“Well, yeah.” Matty says this as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “You’re just… you. It feels like I’m doing you a disservice when I try to find something I can compare you to. ‘Course I didn’t think someone like you was gonna be fucking in love with me. Not after I’ve acted like a twat so much,” he adds.
You hum thoughtfully at this. Your hand searches for his in the dark, and when you find it you link your pinky fingers together. You’ve always done this – the motion is second nature now. You like to imagine you can feel electric pulses running between the two bodies through such a small action, like you’re two parts bonding into a whole. “You’re not that much of a twat,” you tease him. “I’d still like you even if you were. You’re just too good.”
“You’re crazy,” Matty tells you affectionately.
“Says you.”
Matty doesn’t respond, but taps your foot. It means “I love you.”
You bring your focus back up to the stars and point out a constellation to Matty. You don’t really see the shapes they supposedly make, but you know they’re there regardless. “It always amazes me that these are the same stars that have always been watching us. It’s the same sky and moon too. They’re constants.” You say this more to yourself than to Matty, but he listens nonetheless. “So much has changed but it’s still the same universe. We’re still so small and it’s still so big.”
Matty studies you while you speak. Your eyes reflect like pools of the celestial sky; he could dive in them and be bathed in starlight. He could reach out and touch your skin and it would burn him, just as if he had touched a star. His fingers beg to trace your lips in an attempt to capture the sounds that escape them; it equates to hearing a beautiful orchestra for the very first time.
“You’re awfully quiet,” you point out. You had been speaking for quite awhile, completely uninterrupted. Usually Matty would have thrown in his own thoughts by now, but he’s still just watching you speak.
“Am I?” he asks with a frown.
You nod and slip your hand from his, raising it to poke his temple with your index finger. “What’s going on in there?”
Matty grins at you. He’s been waiting for this opportunity. “D’you really wanna know?”
“Yes, idiot, of course I do/”
A look of satisfaction appears upon Matty’s face. “I’ve been thinking about you and what you’re like and how I still get surprised that you’re in love with me the same way I am with you. And I’m in love with the way you love, [Y/N], you have so much affection for such beautiful things. You make me feel like a beautiful thing with your love.” You take note of the familiar glint in his eyes, the way he seems to emanate energy when he gets excited and can’t stop rambling. “There’s a natural sort of beauty about you and some days I’m not sure a world like this could have produced something so perfect. It’s like… you must have been sculpted from some celestial body that we haven’t discovered yet. If there were some kind of divine power, you’d be the reason I'd believe in it.”
You bring yourself closer to Matty and nestle yourself by his side, his arm wrapping around you. “I was right when I said you’re just too good.” You think hard on what to say next, turning Matty’s own words over in your head again and again. It’s more than difficult to be so effortlessly poetic in the moment the way Matty is. You tell him this. “I wish I could place you right inside my head so you would be able to see just how much you occupy my mind every single day. You’re everywhere I look and my love for you follows. It lives where I live.”
Matty leans into you further, turns his head to rest on yours. He needs to breathe you in. “You know when something just feels really right, like it’s where you’re supposed to be?” he asks. His voice is softer now, his lips closer to your ear.
“Yeah. Definitely.”
“This is one of those things. Being with you, I mean.”
“I could’ve told you that from day one,” you tease. “You were too busy thinking I couldn’t be in love with you.”
Matty gasps dramatically. “I cannot believe you’d speak to me like that after I poured my heart out to you.”
You pointedly ignore this. Tree branches up above you sprawl across the sky, reaching out into nothingness. Gentle breeze shakes them, leaves rattling in unison. The sound makes you tired, and Matty’s body warmth certainly doesn’t help. You stifle a yawn, but not without Matty noticing.
“You wanna go back inside, darling?”
You give a noncommittal shrug. Truthfully, you want to stay out here all night, watch the sky slowly turn to a rosy pink and hear the familiar bird calls; you want to watch things start anew. You’re just as content with the thought of a soft bed though, and, more importantly, Matty’s rhythmic breathing to lull you off to sleep.
The stars twinkle kindly down upon you and your lover. You hope that when you die you become a big ball of light. You hope that Matty joins you in that way, nothing but pure energy, withstanding time and space. You could be eternalized in this universe with him.

Rules: Shuffle your 'on repeat' playlist and post the first ten tracks, then tag ten people.
Tagged by @catboyclarity THANK YOU i will always talk about music. Commentary and lyrics included because I am once again incredibly normal about music.
1.) Sleep by Slowdive - "When I see you drowning / I'll dream, dream away from you"
So apparently the version I have on my spotify is like, a reupload by a completely random user under a different name and I did not realize this was a Slowdive song until right this second. Interesting! Did not know that was allowed!
2.) Enchanting Ghost by Sufjan Stevens - "And if it pleases you to leave me, just go / Stopping you would stifle your enchanting ghost"
YEAHHH ENCHANTING GHOST!!! I was really obsessed with the All Delighted People EP a few weeks ago so I'm not surprised it's got some representation in my on repeat playlist.
3.) Two Lips - Choir Boy - "I don’t need a place to go when I give up the ghost / Tulips of the spring should grow"
Passive With Desire is a great album all around, no comments.
4.) Child I Will Hurt You - Crystal Castles - "Mercy, we abstain"
I used to be really into this album in 2013??ish. But somehow I missed this song back then, and wasn't until recently I came around to it.
5.) Big in Japan - Alphaville - "I had no illusions that I'd ever find a glimpse of / Summer's heatwave in your eyes"
This is fully because I went on a road trip with my friends and someone put this on the playlist and it was stuck in my head so I started looping it while cooking dinner one night. But really catchy song.
6.) Canine Teeth - Orchid Mantis & Fog Lake - "Tell me, what's the price of a broken dream?"
Crazy story about this one, the owner of a local record shop helped produce this album and we were totally geeking out about it together because I love both Fog Lake and Orchid Mantis.
7.) Archie, Marry Me - Alvvays - "You've expressed explicitly your contempt for matrimony"
SONG OF THE SUMMER‼️I looped this one for a good long time because it's just a satisfying listen. Those introductory lyrics are as smooth as butter.
8.) All Delighted People (Original Version) - Sufjan Stevens - "I’m not easily confused / The trouble with the storm inside us grew / But I had so much to give / In spite of all the terror and abuse"
I just KNEW something from this EP would make an appearance here again. This song is like a smaller version of Impossible Soul to me. I love the reuse of the melody from Sound of Silence, and the reinterpretation of the lyrics to be about a turbulent relationship.
9.) Leave Me Be - Choir Boy - "When we both can see / Divergence warrants no hostility"
I am once again repeating that Passive With Desire is a great album and this is my favorite song from it. It's EXTREMELY catchy you have been warned.
10.) Happy 13 - Flotation Toy Warning - "Guess we can't really choose exactly where we land / But how fast you were bound is in your own hands"
Oh man, I discovered Bluffer's Guide To The Flight Deck probably less than 48 hours ago and I'm already concerned its on my repeat. Really fun, niche album with fantastic album art (we love you seabirds).
I don't tag people usually, but if you would like to do this then please feel free to tag me back! If anyone wants more music thoughts I recently made a Rate Your Music account and there's a few things like this up there.

Hiiii hello I saw ur tags on that sugushoko art of them listening to music and the thought of them liking 80s/90s alternative makes me CRAZY ajshdkdj do u have any other hcs abt their music taste like certain bands or other genres or whatever (only if u wanna ajshjdjd I’m just really interested in your thoughts on it) <333
ahhh same here! I don't know what it is about sugushoko, I just feel like they have this unspoken closeness? where it just sort of happened, while I personally see gojo/shoko becoming close in a more gradual sense. like suguru and shoko can both be more quiet, calm, and a little dark. aesthetics and personality. so I see their music taste as like shoegaze/alternative rock/metal/indie?
Deftones, Slowdive, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Nirvana (specifically Bleach), Pixies, Alice in Chains, Fiona Apple, BAUHAUS ESPECIALLY FOR GETO, Metallica (earlier stuff), The Kids Aren't Alright by the Offspring (I can imagine canon Sugushoko relating to this so much), The Cure, SYOAD (I imagine Gojo getting into all of this because of them, but he'd love SYOAD a lot idk why), my bloody valentine, Gojo gets them into Neutral Milk Hotel, Depeche Mode, Christian Death, Bjork, New Order, Gojo gets Geto into A Tribe Called Quest (I was a lowkey pretentious teenager), Radiohead
that's the gist of it! sorry this was long :( but I loved this ask honestly it's so fun to talk about <3

cym as fav lyrics
Aaaaaaa anon you must forgive me for being so late about it, I had one hell of a ride choosing song lyrics *pants as if I'd been running*
But eeee it will be a long post-
• @shecriesalonemp3
"Listen close and don't be stoned
I'll be here in the morning
'Cause I'm just floating
Your cigarette still burns
Your messed up world will thrill me
...
Alison, I'll drink your wine
And wear your clothes when we're both high
Alison, I said we're sinking
But she laughs and tells me it's just fine
I guess she's out there somewhere"
- Alison (Slowdive)
• @its-toasted
"Take everything you have in front of you
Make every movement, do it to the groove
You will not be happy for long if you're working
And what would be the point if it did ever surface?
...
Wake up to the rhythm of the city and I try to remember
Even my brothers have some trouble with
Each other since since those things fell apart
It's the way that things are
It's the way that it is
...
Even when you split me up, groovin' to the sound of the laughter
And if I listen to it closely I can
Still hear all the love in his heart
Every time I take a look at the skyline it makes me feel better
'Cause I just miss you down here where the other people try to move on"
- Blue Coupe (Twin Peaks)
• @deviocat
"Oh, you can't hear me 'cause I sing to a different age
And you should fear me 'cause I believe in a different age
But I live in the city that lives in a different age
Oh, I live in a city that lives in a different age
Where all the poets are writing memoirs
And I'm still singing songs
Oh, all the poets are writing memoirs
And I'm still singing songs"
- A Different Age (Current Joys)
• @lacexleaves
"I used to think of ferris wheel light sounds
The Friday hum of neons and blue
But now they're like circular cages
Of grated tin and rusted wind
Hey, now, who really cares?
Hey, won't somebody listen
Let me say what's been on my mind
Can I bring it out to you
I need someone to talk to
And no one else will spare me the time"
- Hey, Who Really Cares? (Linda Perhacs)
• @francesco-bernoulli-gang
"Angels smoking cigarettes on rooftops in fishnets in the morning with the
Moon still glowing
And here comes Jesus in an Astrovan rolling down the strip again
He's stoned while Jerry plays
Life ain't ever what it seems
These dreams are more than paper things
And it's alright mama you're afraid
I'll be poor along the way
I don't wanna see those tears again
You know, Jesus drives an Astrovan
Yes, he does (I say woo)"
- Astrovan (Mt. Joy)
• @pani-puri
"Pulling up, getting down
This whole place is crazy town
Music bumping and the lights gone down
Never felt at home in any place I found
Oh, I live in a cold, white wind
And I feel the chill coming over me again"
- Butterfly (Adrianne Lenker)
• @anjo-umbra
"Put your hands on the wheel
Let the golden age begin
Let the window down
Feel the moonlight on your skin
Let the desert wind
Cool your aching head
Let the weight of the world
Drift away instead
These day I barely get by
I don't even try
It's a treacherous road
With a desolated view
There's distant lights
But here they're far and few
And the sun don't shine
Even when its day
You gotta drive all night
Just to feel like you're ok"
- The Golden Age (Beck)
• @roseusnoctua
"Satellite, headlines read
Someone's secrets you've seen
Eyes and ears have been
Satellite dish in my yard
Tell me more, tell me more
Who's the king of your satellite castle?
Winter's cold spring erases
And the calm away by the storm is chasing
Everything good needs replacing
Look up, look down all around, hey satellite
Rest high above the clouds no restrictions
Television we bounce 'round the world
And while I spend these hours
Five senses reeling
I laugh about this weatherman's satellite eyes"
- Satellite (Dave Matthews Band)
• @sidereusimber
"And though I may be getting older
Know that I'm going with you
Know that I'm hanging on
to the things that you said
The things that you said
...
I've felt my soul
Rise up from my body when
I look into your blue eyes
...
If cosmic force
Is real at all
It's come between you and I"
- Some Things Cosmic (Angel Olsen)

Hello! i was wondering if i could get an aot matchup! thank you so much
im 15 and he/him is fine
any gender is fine but I think I might prefer guys
Likes: creepy internet stuff (like ARGs), sports, analysis videos, cats, comedy shows, d&d, travel, water (??im a power pisser), parties, and true crime
dislikes: reading istg (which is ironic cause im great at it), math, when you get on a facetime w someone and u just see their ceiling fan, people who r sensitive and get mad easily
Personality: ok so i stay home a lot but i love going out too, and im generally the life of the party. Im really dramatic and love entertaining people. I have a lot of kinda nerdy interests but not in like the grades way. I mean, i am one of those really high-grades people (im in an IB school after gifted program, pray for me), but i really am not big on my grades.
So if i had a bf or gf, i would LOVE them to have those nerdy interests but not be a stickler ab grades. but dont get me wrong, i could never imagine being with someone who doesnt care about where they fall in class. MOST IMPORTANTLY i need someone mature, who i can rely on.
my favorite song always changes but i like Tell Em by Cochise and When the sun hits by slowdive (two very opposite songs lol)
For anyone i dont wanna be matched with- any adult characters. 18-17 and under please
Thank you so much!
Thank you for requesting ❤️
Attack on Titan I match you with.... Connie!

I feel like you both are very similar and would go very well together. We all know that he likes to make people laugh, and you laughing is even better. You both would joke around and just laugh and have so much fun together. He pegs me as the type to not be the smartest at school but at random things (like he would be really smart at d&d but can't figure out 7•9). Although he does try his hardest and it pays off. Although he may seem immature sometimes, he actually is really mature as because of his siblings. He would love to watch true crime with you (he spins up crazy theory's) he also loves parties. I just feel like you two are a perfect match.
I hope you like it🖤

Slowdive
Tumblr media
Commonly identified as shoegaze, Slowdive nonetheless exhibited a broader set of inspirations -- one that spanned four decades, including folk-rock, dub, and ambient techno -- than the majority of their '90s contemporaries. A combination of geographic origin, labelmates such as My Bloody Valentine and Ride, and a sustained predilection for dreamlike harmonies and psychedelicized layers of guitar, led to inevitable restrictive classification. The band's distinctive sound continually evolved from their late-'80s start through 1995, when they closed out their first phase with a misunderstood ambient album that shed nearly all rock convention. Two decades later, while most of the members remained involved with individual pursuits, the band was reactivated for touring and recorded again.
Formed in Reading, England in late 1989, Slowdive originally consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (guitar, vocals), Neil Halstead (guitar, vocals), Christian Savill (guitar), and Adrian Sell (drums). Goswell, Halstead, and Sell were previously the core of the Pumpkin Fairies, an indie-pop act that had recorded a demo. Savill was a member of Eternal, who released a single on Sarah. Within less than a year, Slowdive signed to Alan McGee's Creation label and released their debut, a self-titled EP of demos. "Slowdive" itself was named Single of the Week by Melody Maker. Morningrise, featuring temporary drummer Neil Carter, and Holding Our Breath, with ex-Charlottes member Simon Scott on board, followed as the band's second and third EPs of sleepy, escapist dream pop. "Morningrise" appeared on the U.K. pop chart for one week (registering at number 83), as did the third EP's "Catch the Breeze" (which entered at number 52). Both songs were likewise praised by Melody Maker. The same publication dubbed Slowdive part of "The Scene That Celebrates Itself," a small and loose conglomerate of guitar bands, including Lush, Moose, Swervedriver, and the pre-Britpop Blur, that could be seen at each other's shows.
Just for a Day, Slowdive's debut album, was released in September 1991. Though it placed in the Top Ten of the indie chart and climbed to number 32 on the pop chart, the U.K. press was not as supportive as it had been in the past. Months later, the Blue Day compilation appeared on the racks. It combined the band's first three singles, leaving off their version of Syd Barrett's "Golden Hair" and the instrumental version of "Avalyn." The band's sound developed significantly for Souvlaki (titled in reference to a favorite skit by telephone pranksters the Jerky Boys), released in June 1993. Assisted by Brian Eno on a couple tracks and mixed by Ed Buller, it was even more atmospheric than the debut, an exemplary "studio as instrument" album of the era, elevated by refined songwriting. Dates with Catherine Wheel were intended to promote the album in the U.S., but snags with Stateside label SBK ensured that Slowdive toured a country where their latest album was available only sparingly as an expensive Creation import. When the U.S. edition of Souvlaki did arrive, eight months after its original U.K. release, it added four bonus tracks, including three-quarters of the 5 EP. Issues with SBK came to a head when the label pulled financial support from a later tour. The band responded by funding a two-week tour themselves and sold a live cassette to help pay the way. Despite poor promotion in the States, the band had cultivated a sizable following through word of mouth and short tours.
The band's third studio album was released in 1995. Pygmalion was essentially a solo ambient recording by Halstead with guest vocals from Goswell and occasional percussion from Ian McCutcheon (ex-Mermaids), though all five members were listed in the liners. Taken further than the ambient techno slant of the 5 EP, it was mostly beatless. Within a couple weeks of the album's release, Creation, who had expected something else, dropped the band. Goswell, Halstead, and McCutcheon swiftly moved on with Mojave 3, signed by 4AD on the strength of a demo that basically became the first of their five albums released through the 2000s. In 2014, Chaplin, Goswell, Halstead, Savill, and Scott -- most of whom had remained active with numerous bands and solo activities -- resumed as Slowdive to play festivals and tour on multiple continents. The quintet eventually made a fourth album, Slowdive, released on Secretly Canadian sublabel Dead Oceans in May 2017. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi.

Favourite genres: post-punk! shoegaze, noise, industrial, ethereal, gothic rock, trip hop
Favourite song: impossible. but soon by mbv is probably one song I will never get tired of
Most listened-to artists: Likee joy division, my bloody valentine, killing joke, death grips, grimes, meat beat manifesto, bauhaus, cocteau twins, the sisters of mercy... that I can think of right now
An album important to you: most albums that I love are pretty important. But if it’s really personal then closer by joy division, or loveless by mbv, halfaxa by grimes... joy division’s discography. it’s endless, music is my life
A song important to you: god this is even more difficult! I’d just say soon again, it has been the soundtrack to a lot of heavy lonely experiences
What makes you like a song: umm I just kind of like it. I don’t know what makes me like it all the time because I feel like my taste is all over the place. I guess if it’s dark or heavy it tends to resonate with me more often. Usually if I feel something I hear in it
Favourite instrument to hear: I love bass a fucking lot. but also nice noisy guitars in general or funky post-punk guitar. angry aggressive percussion. or like, metal objects à la neubauten
Song from your childhood: oh no. There were so many that are now currently swirling round my head, how am I to just pick out one?? how soon is now I guess was pretty impacting on me. outdoor miner, blue monday, shot by both sides, i wanna be adored, transmission, coffee n tv... so much bowie.
A song that reminds you of love: UHMM cherry coloured funk, crazy for you by slowdive, most of mbv’s stuff (please lose yourself in me), swoony by the ecstasy of saint theresa... a lot of songs have a lot of love energy 2 me
A song you love lyrically: idk why this is difficult...  I don’t think I cling to lyrics as much as I do sound though I do listen in to them and feel them... anything by fiona apple is perfect. edit: portishead lyrics r also killer

2020 year in review - honourable mentions
It’s year-end list season folks. I’m gonna be listing off my top 10 for this year with some tasty reviews, but I also wanted to make an appreciation post for a few albums that didn’t make the cut, so here’s a collection of mini reviews for five albums that almost made the top 10:
Tumblr media
WEST OF EDEN - HMLTD
Main Genres: Art Punk, Glam Punk, Art Pop A decent sampling of: Dark Cabaret, Progressive Pop, Synth Punk, Post-Punk, Punk Blues
West of Eden is what I imagine what happens when a bunch of theatre kids become punk rockers. I had no idea who HMLTD were before I checked them out this year on a whim, and boy am I glad I did. This is very eclectic punk music with pop hooks and a lot of influence from cabaret and musical theatre. Definitely the kind of album where the artist throws everything at the wall to see what sticks, so it’s a mixed bag, but there’s a lot of pay off too. “The West Is Dead” is a wondrously flamboyant opener, and “Satan, Luella, and I” is a such a massive song, with a brilliant clash of aesthetics that is one part wild west, one part gothic, and one part broadway fanfare. Also I swear they’re sampling a vocaloid voice track on “Why?” so that’s something. Check this album out if you wanna get weird. 8/10
Highlights: “Satan, Luella, & I”, “The West Is Dead”, “Where’s Joanna?”, “To The Door”
Tumblr media
FUTURE NOSTALGIA – DUA LIPA
Main Genres: Nu-Disco, Dance Pop A decent sampling of: Funktronica, Synth Pop
Ironically, 2020 has been a really big year for nu-disco even though we can’t go out to the clubs. Likewise, this somehow ended up only being my second favourite disco/pop crossover project this year, but this is still a great album and the singles are easily the best thing to dominate the charts this year. If Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? is classy, sensual, and soulful, than Future Nostalgia is spunky and free-spirited, like the perfect soundtrack to a night out with the girls. Dua Lipa has really proven she’s a force to be reckoned with in the pop world, and I’m glad she’s starting to approach the level of stardom of artists like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande who frankly I think she’s starting to really outperform musically. The last two tracks standout as easily being the weakest, although unlike some man-children I’m not mad at the lyrics of “Boys Will Be Boys”; it’s just a weak song musically, but not enough to make me forget how much the rest of this kicks ass. Honestly, it’s a crime that I can’t be drunk off my ass shouting the lyrics to “Hallucinate” in a gay bar right now as I’m writing this, but I digress. Very good album, proud of Dula Peep. 8/10 Highlights: “Hallucinate”, “Break My Heart”, “Don’t Start Now”, “Levitating”
Tumblr media
SILVER LADDERS – MARY LATTIMORE
Main Genres: Ambient A decent sampling of: Post-Minimalism, New Age, Electroacoustic
I checked out this album because it was co-produced by Neil Halstead of Slowdive (my all-time favourite band), and I didn’t know what to expect from the process of a shoegaze giant producing an album of instrumental harp music. Thankfully, I’m happy to report that the end result is both unconventional and beautifully mesmerizing. Mary Lattimore’s Silver Ladders is a heavenly ambient album comprised mostly of just gently plucked harps, warm reverb, and the occasional addition of sparse bass and synths. Lattimore’s harp work is intricate but subtle, and the songs make a lot of good use of the space between notes, especially on the title track “Silver Ladders”, a haunting siren song that ends in a crescendo of shimmering echoes. I find the shorter ambient pieces on the album work a lot better than the two darker, longer pieces “Til A Mermaid Drags You Under” and “Don’t Look” which I find to be a tad bit dreary. Still, like all good ambient music, this entire project is a lot more than just ‘background music’ and it really captures the imagination of the listener. I want to get lost at sea listening to the cold air of Mary Lattimore’s harp, but I’ll gladly settle for listening to Silver Ladders on the bus ride home instead. 8/10
Highlights: “Silver Ladders“, “Sometimes He’s In My Dreams”, “Chop on the Climbout”
Tumblr media
SHRINES – ARMAND HAMMER
Main Genres: Abstract Rap, Experimental Rap, East Coast Rap A decent sampling of: Conscious Rap, Hardcore Rap
Definitely my favourite album cover of the year, and it’s a completely real photo of an incident that actually happened so that’s pretty crazy. As for the music, Shrines is a hypnotic, cryptic hip hop album with hard leftist politics and very interesting production that sounds like the sonic manifestation of a head full of cynical thoughts. Billy Woods and Elucid spit rhymes with a lot of poetic frustration, expressing the feeling of utter disenfranchisement by the power systems of classism and racism that dominate their society. The first half of the album is mostly tracks that are energetic like the absolutely ferocious “Leopards”, while later tracks like “Flavor Flav” and “Ramesses II” are mostly mellow and bitter. The beats can be disorienting and confusing, and some of the tracks are kinda formless, so its definitely not an album to dance to, but Shrines is great for a more introspective listen on a late night walk. If I had to pick an album that captured the zeitgeist of 2020, this is probably it. Great music and important subject matter. 8/10
Highlights: “Leopards”, “Dead Cars”, “Flavor Flav”, “Pommelhorse”
Tumblr media
ISLAND – OWEN PALLETT
Main Genres: Chamber Folk A decent sampling of: Art Pop, Modern Classical, Ambient
Owen Pallett is an indie folk artist who has had one foot in the sophisticated world of modern classical music for some time now. Likewise, Pallett’s 2020 concept album Island is grand and orchestral with distinct movements. Continuing the saga of his character Lewis from his 2010 LP Heartland, the new album is equally philosophical and complex, telling the story of Lewis being metaphorically stranded after killing his manipulator god at the end of the last album in the saga. The majority of this album is brilliantly nocturnal in a way that is neither creepy nor unsettling, instead conjuring the invigorating fantasy of a mysterious and enchanting night of a full moon. “Paragon of Order” is particularly enchanting, and while this album only sits at #11 on my year-end list, this one track in particular is probably in my top 3 of the year because it’s just so incredibly magical and captivating in a way that feels like it’s lifting me to a heightened sensory experience every time I listen to it. The last few tracks are a little confusing, especially “Lewis Gets Fucked into Space”, taking a somewhat abstract direction that deviates from the gorgeous imagery of the first half that I fell in love with. Nevertheless, Island is an album I’ll want to revisit on nights when I’m feeling excited or inspired. 8/10
Highlights: “Paragon of Order”, “--> (i)”, “Perseverance of The Saints”, “--> (iii)”, “--> (ii)”, “The Sound of The Engines”

Mmmh... Let’s see: A song from a genre I don’t usually like would be: Vordhosbn by Aphex Twin  A song that makes me want to go on an adventure: Varulven by Garmarna  And a song that reflects my views on love... mmmh... Lyric-wise, I don’t know,    because love is expressed better through the music, in my opinion. My answer would be, Crazy For You by Slowdive, because that’s literally how it sounds to be in love.
