The tragedy of Moon

⚠️ this post contains episode 4 spoilers⚠️

Xiao yuequing or better known as moon is a character that symbolises how no one can truly escape the trust system.

From the beginning, moon was characterised as someone who loved and desired freedom yet had her life dictatected by the system in every possible way known to man. Moon is someone who would go to extreme lengths to achieve her freedom even if it meant that she had to resort to suicide to have it, she would. We, as the audience, see how that desire comes back to bite her in the back, causing her death and causing her to be stranded in an abandoned island all alone.

Her desire for something so basic causes her the worst endings of all, and I find that quite tragic about her character.

It is through moon that we are first introduced to just how oppressive the trust system can be. Moon tells us that Nice's abilities caused him to prioritise perfection at all costs, and we see that the trust system also strips Moon of her own autonomy and agency. A girl who simply started out working as a travel blogger wishing to let everyone see every corner of the world with her then becomes a hero fated to stick with a man whom she doesn't like an accessory for the rest of her life.

Unlike wreck and OG Nice, Moon's hero story or her reasons for being a travel blogger and then becoming a hero aren't based on love or wanting to protect people but they are based on the belief and idea that this is simply a job and that she is doing what her superiors are demanding of her so she can achieve her desires. However, this job and duty come to actively destory who she is to the point where she as a character after being given freedom that she longed for didn't know what she truly wanted and simply wanted time to figure out what she would do moving on from here.

Moon is a great actor, and overall, she is great at her job, but it comes at the cost of it taking over every aspect of her life that it drives her to near insanity. 3 years of being an accessory, 3 years of having to be perfect, 3 years of hell where she lost herself and even more years lost to a contract she has abide by. The chance to escape is one that she longs and strives for, even faking her own death in episode 1, ending to receive it.

Moon manages to give a really important message to Lin Ling, and that is to be himself and choose not what the corporation wants of him but what his heart desires and if he is willing to risk everything for it like she did.

Xiao yuequing also holds a lot of symbolism in her name as its a name that directly translates to 'small moon' a reference to her hero name Moon. The moon symbolises beauty, serenity, and an illumination of hope, which are characteristics that Moon does have, especially in the eyes of Lin Ling. He has constantly viewed her as an idol and later love that he could never reach. His love for her allowed him to find a way to free her and to act as a mirror of hope for her. While moon shows and warns lin ling of the costs of being a hero, Lin Ling is able to show Moon the freedom of being a regular person and what it feels like to be a person making memories with a loved one and not an accessory to some corporations perfect hero image.

In the end, Moon death is one that has been foreshadowed in the series and one that hits hard for the audience as we also have developed an emotional connection to her. The girl who desired and would do anything for freedom even if it meant accepting the fate of living alone in an island killed right after she willingly chooses to go back with the person she cares for. A system that forcefully puppeted her with no way out using another puppet to end her life and on the beach as the waves come up and down. I feel like there is something symbolic about the moon being killed on the beach, a place where it should have control since the moon controls the tides.

What if the Demon Warlock is actually Enki?

Ok, so as far as I know, there is no evidence to back this up(in fact, I think there might be some against it), but I enjoy this headcanon simply for the angst. I mean, all of the divine (or the ones who have close relationships with Irene) eventually becoming the thing they fought against??? The implications, the plot!

The exploration that could be done with this- in season 3 ep 2 Shad mentions Esmund aura in retrospect to the protective barrier around the portal right. What if the "spell" keeping the Demon Warlock on the Island is Esmund magiks?

Throwing away the Enki=DW headcanon rq, the Demon Warlock definitely knows what went down between the Divine Warriors right, to the point he taunts Aph about it. Yet he's still there. Meaning they couldn't/wouldn't get rid of him and if he is Enki it kinda make sense, considering they couldn't kill Shad either and ended up sealing him and a different dimension (im just realizing the parallels as I write this).

But if he isn't it is also interesting to think about cause it means that they failed they're jobs, remember Irene created the Divine Warriors to fight "fate" as she puts it and yet they just left a dangerous demon sitting around for at least 900 year, on a populated Island at that.

If he does know as much as he pretends too it's likely that he came after/during the whole Shad thing, which of course opens a different avenue of exploration- the funactionallity of the group after betraying their team member and perhaps finding out the truth of their relics. (This kinda lends to my theory that Irene and Shad were the power houses of the group)

Or perhaps what I think is the far funnier option, she just happened to be working in that shop just like... because, or for some completely unrelated evil plan. And when Clara walked in out of the blue Missy instantly clocked her vibe it's that strong and was like "You know what would be a good idea?" Clara's casually browsing the shelves and Missy is mentally speed-running how many parallels to her and the Doctor she could get if she pushed them together.

okay i typed this in a reply but i need to say this more detailed here too, the way totk dealt with horses (and stables) is bad and worse than botw imo (yes i can rant about that too, these weird choices are in every little spot in totk, its almost impressive)

in a game that lets you build cars and stupid flying maschines, towers that shoot you into the stratosphere AND teleporting points all over the place, the chance is already low that you use a horse- though i would be one of them bc i love horses and hate building and didnt find it fun at all-

(also i almost never used any parts i had with me bc you cant put them back and your dumb vehicles despawn as soon as you dont look at them- also a negative thing about that system that reinforces the feeling of actually using it being more punishing than rewarding with the added bonus of the good ol saving your health potions forever problem)

-and something i DID like was that you can have more horses and the ... one.. new color (the lil spots but only AFTER you do that one quest in the spy post)

the stable points seemed like a neat idea, but like so many things, are utterly cheatable, imo the system should have only given you a point when you visit a new stable, so you actually have to go around and visit them all

(also .. add new stables, like mini ones or sth that dont offer beds- you dont need that anyway- so you have more places in which you can get them ... why did they remove some of them anyway, shouldn there be MORE now that the land is supposedly healing/being repaired? especially the one next to the big canyon, its so empty there it would have the perfect place for sth like a new settlement or a big boss arena but no its more empty than it was before, why?? and then putting yet another repeating annoying quest there in that weirld empty place?? i just dont get it)

letting you farm points by sleeping at a stable or bringing in a horse gives you LESS incentive to actually go around the world bc you can just farm it there

(and if that was done so youd 'discover' the malanya talks to you in your sleep 'secret' ... that is literally told to you, and if its bc you dont want to force players to go around and find every stable to get all those rewards ... why do you have 140 or whatver caves then with the majority of them being the literal same thing over and over ... to make people actually use the sleeping thing there? .. why, who uses that anyway, and farming points by sleeping there .. what the hell does that add? AND THEN the stupid sleep over tickets, probably the most nothign reward ever, dont count?? i dont think i ever used one- it just all doesnt make any sense, everything plays against each other)

the upgrading system for your horse is .. once again, a neat idea horribly executed, you have to go find malanya to upgrade them, and similarly stupidly like the fairies, they only tell you what food you need for what upgrade when you are there .. or when you are sleeping in the special tm bed at a stable, randomly, one food, bc the quantity changes too

which is just so ??????????? let me go and do a quest that rewards you with a lil booklet in which you can look up what an upgrade costs, or let the stables have that, either as a list or in the menu when selecting a horse or something?? (also why the hell is malanya in a different spot anyway, like, it feels like a modder just plopped them over there, their og spot is just empty now - except for yet again a stupid filler quest for .. another big horse and a yaaaaaaaaays crystal shrine quest- ... the spot is even still called spring of the horse god .... its so stupid, just like the fairy shuffling around, like you really couldnt think of a better way to reuse that concept other than to ... move it to a different spot in the same map and map level???? and not change anything in their og spot except idk, put a hole in the map ... for one of them like .. its like they moved them around last minute just to have the semblance of things being 'changed' with no regard what makes a change actually feel like one and what just feels like, pick up thing, click on random spot on map, drop thing- its like that for the fairies and shrines too, its so dumb and .. feels disrepectful to botw and how much thought seemed to have went into these spots that were clearly built about those things)

and like it couldnt get WORSE, they cut off the paths that horses follow automatically with one of those miasma buttholes (sorry its just a hole cut into the map, it doesnt even look like miasma burst through, it just .. cut out) a monster camp (that RESPAWNS, i thought those camps you clear with a quest would stay clear, but that would make sense, so of course it respawns and you can do the frame rate killer quest over and over yippieee) or otherwise like, with a big rock or a broken bridge-

and there is NO WAY to create a new path or fix or move anything in a game ABOUT BUILDING supposedly, like you needed more reasons to never use a horse????? i liked jsut hopping on and letting them follow a path and chill looking at the landscape, you cant do this here, and you cant even excuse it with 'its bc of the theme' as in, stuff is destroyed bc calamity 1.5 or whatever bc nothing in the game makes it feel like theres anything actually at stake, but the real crime is to make it not be fixable. WHY??? link moves entire buildings with ease but cant move one freaking rock that fell into a river?????? you swing around logs like a club but cant fix a bridge so your horse can get over it??????????????????????????????
