I can’t help thinking that all the little ones seem to end up with me. Louella. Lou Lou. Ampert. I can’t keep a one of them safe. Why do they flock to me?

Remember that moment in Mockingjay when Haymitch doesn't go to Twelve with Katniss and the rest of the team to shoot video? Plutarch is telling Katniss that Haymitch couldn't stand it, especially without a bottle od liquor, and Katniss is like "it's long since i lost patience with my mentor, i don't care about him"
Well, now we know why he didn't want to see his home in ash and after the fire...

the way haymitch must have seen it as all his ghosts coming back to haunt him at once when katniss walked onto the train with the face of burdock and asterid, the pin of maysilee, the voice of lenore dove, and a background so devastatingly similar to his own. of course sweetheart slipped out. and of course he did everything he could to keep her alive

Break the chain and destroy the person holding the reins.
It's the smallest thing maybe but it's funny to me Sunrise on the Reaping has given me another reason to dislike Gale.
Thinking of Madge on reaping day, wearing her nice dress and Gale giving her shit for it. Like she has a choice. Like she has say. Like it's her fault who she was born to. It's such an interesting example of class vs culture wars. This idea that the people up the road who have a nice house are the enemy and not the faceless people thousands of miles away who profit on their poverty.
Thinking of Maysilee who was very conscious of the way she dressed. Who liked looking nice and dressing up. Who is Madge's aunt that she never met. Who Madge heard stories of growing up about her moms twin sister who always loved fashion and knew the importance of masking and the power of how you present to people. Don't let them treat us like animals.
And when Madge lifts her head and says "I want to look my best if I go to the Capitol" and Gale has the audacity to scoff at her.
It also speaks to how quickly history is lost. He probably doesn't even know her aunt died in the games. Doesn't care. You never ever ever know what hurt people are carrying. What their history is. What their familial struggle has been. Don't punch down. Don't punch sideways. Don't even punch up. Break the chain and destroy the person holding the reins.

The doubling of tribute numbers. The miscarried Abernathy twins. The Donner sisters who Haymitch carries a fascination for as consequence. Louella being replaced by Lou Lou, a name that only mimics the first half of her name, and a girl who matches her in appearance only. Tam Amber’s set of pins, one dropped down a well, the other discarded. The two versions of the games: the one that Haymitch remembers and the edited, falsified version of them without the real content. The two bags of gumdrops. The fraternal affection he feels for Louella and Lou Lou, the artificial twins, and Maysilee’s offer to be his sister—the second one she gives in the book. A bond with a real twin, both pairs healing the sisters he never did know. The split between what is natural and what is manufactured or forged, bonds that that grow on their own, or are forced into existance. And if the distinction makes any difference to the person it impacts.

Comparing Haymitch and Katniss' narrative styles is so funny to me because he's a yapper and she's a gatekeeper. He drops more lore on D12 in the first two chapters of SOTR than she does in the entire trilogy.
Haymitch is like "Yeah, so this person is related to this person who's related to this person and things are this way because of this and this thing actually came from here and this person is actually my best friend and also here's this extra tidbit of random info cause all my lore dropping comes with it's own additional bonus content and all my unnecessary commentary."
And Katniss is over here like "Tf do I care for if y'all know all the lore of District 12? I'm talking about my beautiful husband's beautiful eyelashes."

like if anything she became even more intentionally autistic coded… suzanne collins I owe you my life
“oh no autistic wiress has been disproved in sotr because she could communicate normally until she was tortured! :(“ WRONG. literally the first thing haymitch thinks when he sees her is wow she’s weird. it’s said that she “shuts down” after giving them tips for the games and doesn’t give a proper goodbye. and she “can’t” elaborate about how she won her games. she was always semi-verbal/experienced verbal shutdown!! it was just significantly worsened by trauma!!

the hunger games movies aren’t limited to first person perspective like the books. which means we will almost definitely get beetee’s reaction to ampert’s death

The Capitol reaps Ampert for Beetee's plan to sabotage the comms system, knows of his further plans to rebel, potentially kills his wife and second child (as they are not mentioned in Mockingjay at all), and yet, they just let him "essentially redesign" their entire broadcast system years later?
"Our plan is to launch an Airtime Assault," says Plutarch. "To make a series of what we call propos--which is short for 'propaganda spots'--featuring you, and broadcast them to the entire population of Panem." "How? The Capitol has sole control of the broadcasts," says Gale. "But we have Beetee. About ten years ago, he essentially redesigned the underground network that transmits all the programming. He thinks there's a reasonable chance it can be done. Of course, we'll need something to air.
The system they are targeting transmits "all the programming", therefore the Capitol is using the system he designed. They must break into the system in order to overwrite the Capitol's broadcast. It's not a rebel system he redesigned, it is the same system the Capitol "controls" as Gale's line establishes.
So the Capitol just let the guy they know has a history of anti-capitol rebellion redesign their comms system.

Haymitch ‘type who dies young’ Abernathy is such a hilariously unreliable narrator. That boy was a menace to the Capitol from the start, even though he repeatedly reaffirms how he never goes looking for trouble.
At the beginning of the first book, Katniss lets us know how horribly illegal it is to sneak over the fence and into the woods, she knows that if she ever gets caught it will have terrible consequences. Yet Haymitch doesn’t seem all that worried in his commentary. He acknowledges that there will be negative consequences, but says that he will just bounce back.
When he was younger, he and his friends were using a peacekeeper’s bike to learn how to ride. They were careful not to get caught, but once again Haymitch’s commentary only focuses on how much fun they had and how valuable the experience was.
This might be Haymitch’s naivety, or reflect his easier upbringing.
