I asked the members how they feel about their Billboard entrance… the girls were unhappy and scared because they know the fan wars are coming. I genuinely pray and hope for LSFM to feel better because I know these words will stick with them, I can relate no matter how confident you are… these words hurt and having to see it over vocals that don’t even affect this planet and our lives is crazy 😩🤡

I’m also hoping Taylor wins soty. I agree with your point about dominance - insofar as she’s doing anything, she’s seemingly been using the movie as a somewhat subtle campaign. Movie premiere was on Oct 11, which was also the first day of the first round of Grammy voting, and now the movie will be available for rental on her birthday, coincidentally right before Dec 14, the first day of the final round of voting lol. If there’s anything more, she may be waiting to be closer to the actual voting, but even if this is it, there is a degree of strategy at play here, anons don't need to consider soty a lost cause just yet (but seriously, if she loses I will be very sad lol)

EXO Theory Pt. 16 - I Need All 'Ya ~ Cream Soda

What a bop, SOTY, AOTY, I love EXO. The music video has too many fast cuts that it's kinda annoying to analyse, but the fast cuts really reminded me of Love Me Right and Love Shot and some other MVs that have strong dreamlike vibes - so that's fun! Anyway...

The first thing to note with this MV is that we have two sets of EXO in the MV. The colourfully dressed EXO:

And the EXO wearing black suits:

In this MV, I actually think the suited members are representing X-EXO and the colourful ones are normal EXO, so I will refer to the suited EXO members as X-EXO from here-on.

I think it's quite obvious that the brightly dressed EXO members in this MV are trapped in a dream state that they are trying to escape, as we have seen in many EXO MVs before.

We get a few different clips of the Bright!EXO members laying like this on the floor, asleep. Very reminiscent of Love Me Right.

In Love Me Right, we watch as the members take on the roles of Alice in Wonderland characters and try to escape the dream that the Red Force has put them into. In Cream Soda, we see the EXO members asleep, but not taking on characters. Instead, they are wondering around in this space that seems to me to be very cube-like.

However, we do also see EXO outside of this space. At the beginning of the MV they arrive at this fancy dinner hall where they immediately wreak havoc and destroy the layout with a skateboard.

Straight after this we see an image of X-EXO partying and a drink falling over, seemingly out of nowhere.

This is signifying to us that these two scenarios must be connected with each other; EXO cause drinks and plates to smash and fall in their scene and a drink also falls in the other X-EXO scene. So bearing that in mind, we move on.

Next, we get this scene of EXO Chen falling onto a bed and it kind of transitions to this image of some jugs and bottles under water.

From here on I think Chen sort of wakes up from the dream and takes the place of X-EXO Chen. This is sort of in keeping with this idea I've had in my theories where Chen was the spy for the Red Force, but since Let Me In, we have seen him repent and come back to the EXO's side. I think in this MV we get some more of this theory.

Once Chen falls into the X-EXO space, we watch a scene of X-EXO Chanyeol and Kyungsoo playing chess, and we see a clip of 'X-EXO' Chen playing cards.

The chess game gets interrupted by somebody putting their drink on the table. I cannot tell who it is, but the significance of chess is still quite interesting. We've seen chess in a few different places, most notably in the Tempo MV where we see Xiumin and Kyungsoo play and their chess game creates the cube which the EXO members reenter to try and solve the puzzle to escape. The cube is a tool of the Red Force, even if the members do need it in the Tempo MV. We also see chess in Obsession where we watch EXO and X-EXO Chen play against each other.

Chess is clearly used as a symbol of the Red Force, we even see chess pieces in one opening VCR to the MAMA 2016 performance which was heavily lore based.

The card game that Chen is playing is significant in the overall storyline for Cream Soda because we get the reveal later in the MV that Chen actually played the Joker card. Just before this, we get a clip of Xiumin dropping a drop of his glass and it shows us the members aimlessly wandering in the cube like space again.

Chen then sets the Joker card on fire and we see the EXO members from just seconds before begin to celebrate.

Right after this we then see this image of a wine glass smashing to the ground - which again, is signifying this idea that as the EXO members win this round, the X-EXO members lose (as the wine glass is definitely from the X-EXO member scenes).

Not long after this we also see time go backwards; at the beginning of the MV we get a close up of someone's watch which ticks forward a second. At the end of the MV, it ticks back a second again, resetting time.

We then also see Baekhyun and Kyungsoo leave the setting looking very pleased with themselves.

Baekhyun and Kyungsoo are shown in another few clips together as well, so clearly the two of them were up to something in this MV.

This duo actually really reminded me of the two of them in The War comics - as the two of them are the ones monitoring the other members and giving them instructions in that comic. I wonder if they were the ones that told Jongdae to go over to the X-EXO side and be the spy for them in this MV. As Chen seems to be the reason that they have got free and escaped from this scenario at least. We don't actually see any of the other members escape though, so maybe only Kyungsoo and Baekhyun did in this one. Hmm..

It could also be that the two were responsible for telling Suho to talk to the girl we see in the MV as well. Before I have been over how I think girls are significant in the EXO MVs - they are almost always a representative of the Red Force.

I wonder if Suho is distracting the Red Force from noticing that Chen has replaced X-EXO Chen in the other universe. We do see cream running down the car and blocking all the windows, blocking her sight, so that could make sense.

As I said before, we end the MV with the watch ticking backwards, in line with the Let Me In and Hear Me Out MVs where time was a pivotal theme of the MVs. I think it's less so here, but I do think it's still important that time was reversed back to the beginning of the MV, but now with Kyungsoo and Baekhyun freed. It could be that we will now get a continuation of that damn The War comic as it's driving me mad we still have nothing??? It's been 6 years SM c'mon!

Anyway we mustn't ignore the most important part of the MV:

These amazing outfits and the amazing dance. Not at all lore significant, but it did need to be noted.

Tbh this video really isn't lore heavy - it's mostly aesthetics and dancing. Not complaining, but not much to really read into imo. Hope it was somewhat interesting anyway! See you in 3 years when EXO has another comeback lmao 😭😭😭😭😭😭

One of my favourite things about Sotis is his story arc! He didn’t have the happy ending he originally wanted - he could never be accepted by the other gods as one of their own in the way that he wanted, and the issues their previous treatment of him had left are too much for Sotis to put aside and forgive, even when they did start treating him better.

He did, however, find happiness elsewhere, even if it meant leaving his own world for it, and that’s my favourite part about him. Accepting that some dreams aren’t meant to come true, but also that new opportunities and happiness are still out there, you just have to look for it and be bold enough to take some risks.

Additionally, his character matured from being a people pleaser, one who would rarely prioritise their needs, and being very easy to boss around and intimidate, to being very stubborn! Sotis knows what’s right, he knows what he wants to do, and he finally has that confidence to stick to his own values and make others aware of that.

Do you think it’s possible Taylor and Joe broke up because he realized so many of her new songs are still about Harry? Even when she was saying she was writing about fictional characters … I mean The 1 is right there. Sorry if this is something that’s been discussed already I’m new here. When I watched her go over to Harry at the Grammys and Joe didn’t even bother to attend with her I wondered what was going on.

Since we may not get Taylor's interpretation please understand I'm only giving what I think. Joe is a smart guy and most likely knew about Harry. Haylors don't want discourse. We've been through this years ago and we're older now and tired (lol). The Grammys in 2021 started the signs that Haylor was talking again. In 2023 it was very evident that Taylor was openly supporting Harry by standing up when he was awarded his AOTY and SOTY. I would rather not comment about Joe because I believe TS11 could give us the story. I hope this is a satisfactory answer for now. Thanks for the ask.

Baby hasn't even figured out that Anakin is already in love with him, or that Anakin doesn't give a shit that he's not an alpha. It's just so hard for him to detach his designation from his sense of self worth 🥺😔

And yes I made Anakin taste like cinnamon!! The scruffing I'm so absolutely obsessed with and idk why! Obi-Wan's emotions have been so out of control in these last few chapters, and it's such a sweet way for Anakin to lend him comfort, while also being hot as fuck in the right circumstances. I need him to pavlov Obi-Wan into getting horny when he scruffs him.

OK this was literally like one of my favourite lines in this whole chapter ❤️❤️ It's so indicative of Obi-Wan's character and also the absolute root of their relationship problems. Obi-Wan is holding himself back from telling the truth, from telling Anakin he loves him, from biting him, all while Anakin is doing the same, because neither of them wants to scare the other away. (It also just hasn't occurred to Anakin that he hasn't said he loves Obi-Wan yet. He's so focused on holding himself back physically that he forgets about the words.)

Obi-Wan needs therapy soooo badly, poor thing. I love him but he is definitely unwell™. I don't want to say he's blowing things out of proportion (these feelings are obviously real and he's struggling with them a lot), but they are absolutely a byproduct of the way he keeps spiralling. He'll be feeling sky high one minute and then he'll crash to the ground again in the next. Some of this is his depression but also his hormones are out of wack because his supressants are failing!! 😬

I've been trying not to fall into that rut of "romantic partner cures depression magically" by having Obi-Wan slowly, like, rebuild his support system (Feemor and his friends), find an identity outside of being an alpha and being emperor (like that same thing from earlier about detaching his sense of self-worth from his designation and his job), indulging/discovering hobbies and interests (anthropology, embroidery, time with his friends), and showing vulnerability to others (Anakin is a big one here, but Karishma was an important milestone too).

I feel like you'd have an informed and dynamic perspective of this so I'd like to know your take on "gaze" in media and film. For example, there's a lot of discourse circulating about "white" gaze and "colonial" gaze and questions about "lesbian" and "gay" gazes in terms of how art and people are seen/treated from their perspective.

But what do these gazes really look like in terms of how characters are portrayed or how certain topics are narrated through image and film?

Oh, man. Well, first of all I'm quite honored that I seem to come across as cultured enough to have a coherent take on this. I hadn't heard of the lesbian and gay gazes before, but I'll certainly take a stab at understanding it. (For everyone else- this is a long rambling post with no images, sorry about the scrolltime)

So to start with, let's take this to first principles- how can we define gaze?

I'd say that when a piece of media assumes a gaze, it decides that a person carrying that gaze is holding the camera. So the camera is imbued with the biases of that person. e.g. If an artist took a video of a sunflower, he might focus on the interplay of light among the petals. A biologist, on the other hand, would zoom into the center and identify the spiral of tiny florets.

If we expand this concept to male gaze- that can be explained as the camera being held by a man, and it being imbued with male biases. It’s not strictly related to female objectification- it's a way to explain a limited male view, where the rest of the characters exist mainly to serve him, his interests, and his storyline.

So when the male gaze focuses on women, it shows women as passive, vapid, or oversexualized. They function secondarily to the primary male characters and/or focus their attention on pleasing these men or competing with other women to get male affection.

Male gaze also overvalues male tasks and devalues traditionally female tasks.

And hence, female gaze would assume that a woman is holding the camera, and thus show what she is focusing on- often it does that by focusing on a male body (aka George of the Jungle) or it focuses on the feelings of the female protagonist around a complex event, rather than the actual event itself. Someone else has written an amazing article about this concept here.

Now if we were to define gay gaze, as a separate from general male gaze- I suppose there would be much more objectification of men. The only really good reference I have for this is a reddit comment (by a gay man!) about the "gay pandering" of a famous actor, and how his scenes were shot with a gay lens compared to his costar, whose scenes were shot with a straight female perspective. Essentially Gay Gaze Actor was shot from left to right, and shots of him were cut from the thigh up to emphasize his curves and musculature, in comparison to the costar who got more vertical shots highlighting his height. (If you've seen SOTY, go check it out and see if you notice any of this!) It's super interesting but the whole thing sadly got deleted, so I can't link it here.

I still have to search about lesbian gaze, sorry! I ran out of time but I'll update here tomorrow.

There is nothing negative about the male gaze, if taken on its own. If you're a person, you're imbued with biases; ergo there's a gaze for every classification of person. The reason why the male gaze stands out so much is because it's all-pervasive, to a level where the male gaze has influenced the gazes that we have. As a result, and perhaps I'm going out on a limb here, but even when a piece of media is female-produced, it sometimes has a lot of male-gazey nudity which is shown to be empowering for these women, as they can reclaim their own bodies. The fact that their bodies need reclaiming is, I would argue, the impact that the male gaze still has on feminist media.

In case you want to learn more film theory, I'd advise turning to youtubers like Filmento, Closer Look and Cinema Therapy, since they're where I had gotten most of my previous knowledge from.

As Arcann boarded the ship a feeling of dread washed over him. He knew that no one wanted anything to do with him in the Alliance, and it wasn't like he could blame them. He had tried to kill everyone here multiple times including his own family.

Now Arcann was on a ship full of them going on a mission to help defeat Vaylin. His own sister. He really couldn't blame Thexan for wanting to leave him. He truly was awful. 

The Alliance itself was interesting. At first, he had thought that it was simply a ragtag group of unorganized rebels. Then when the Alliance began to gain more victories he suspected that it was an organized machine. In some ways both of those were correct. 

The Alliance was organized with leaders that ran the show, but it wasn't like Zakuul. Everyone got a say there were discussions that often led to chaos. It made Arcann wonder how anything is ever done. Not that he has really seen them. He only has what Thexan and Onorshash would tell him.

Arcann was very much the pariah of the Alliance and it was as clear as day. The second that he entered the room all the people would go silent and glare at him. If looks could kill they would have killed him a thousand times over just in a day.

Now he was on a mission with those very people. Arcann had a feeling that they needed a sacrifice or were going to kill him, but Thexan trusted them not to so Arcann was going to go along. After all, he owed his twin that much at least.

The ship was bustling. The various crew members were going about their business trying to get everything for the mission prepared. They were so busy that they didn't even glare or notice him. Arcann continued to move forward to ensure that he was not blocking anyone's way. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do.

"Arcann." Major Soti said from behind him. He turned around and looked at the small Mirilian woman. She was wearing her usual armor but it did nothing to stop Arcann from wondering how a small breeze doesn't knock her over. "Follow me."

With that, the alien bobbed and weaved through the mass of working bodies with an ease that Arcann couldn't in his wildest dream replicate. Finally, they reached the meeting area. There, there were a variety of people some of whom Arcann has never seen before. 

"Now that everyone  is here we can get started." Major Soti said

"According to our informant, the ship will be in a position in 2 standard republic hours." A male Cathar said. Major Soti nodded her head. Arcann tried to calculate how many hours and minutes it would be in Zakuulan time, but he quickly gave up. He had droids that had done it for him before so he never bothered to actually learn. Now he wished he had at the very least he could known when they will arrive.

"Correct, the area is pretty much dead space. No one but Zakuul uses this area making it pretty much unknown to the rest of the galaxy." Major Soti said. Arcann looked at the area. The info was right this was only used by Zakuul.

"And the Republic and Empire are too cowardly to explore." A cyborg said. Arcann looked them over and saw that most of the cybernetics were made using beskar. This likely meant they were a Mandalorian.

2022 music recap! (1/3?)

soloists:

after a tough battle, i finally settled on my top three soloists of 2022! this was such a great year for female solo artists in all markets. lexie liu and bibi undoubtedly played a huge role in my year, gaining 255 scrobbles and 287 scrobbles from me, respectively. what pushed lexie liu over the edge to claim the #1 spot is the uniqueness of her third studio album "the happy star," which just released this month! fun fact: lexie liu is the only artist to maintain a song in my top 10 for the past four years! it was time to admit that she's one of my favorite artists overall. i highly recommend most of the happy star (i don't personally care for gaia or shanti) but especially magician, fortuna, 3.14159, and ganma.

bibi is an interesting case- the songs of hers i listened to most, pado and eat my love (2021), are not her most popular (or even her core style). but there's something about them that scream 4.5 gen. if they were released by any rookie gg right now i'm sure they'd be hits. bibi also released an album this year, which i really liked overall! i would recommend the intro (yes, the intro), witch hunt, and motospeed 24. i have to admit that i'm not really a stan, but bibi really impressed me this year!

i have less to say about youha's satellite (currently my 9th most listened song with 48 scrobbles), despite loving it a lot. i just want a girl group to do this style. i want youha to make this her main style. it's just too good- good enough to elevate her to 3rd on my soloists list. "love you more," is her first mini and she killed it, so i'm looking forward to a bright 2023 :)

note: honorable mentions are not in any particular order, i love them all but i need to move on to the other categories lmfao

male releases:

it was a tough year for male artists in my opinion. my only bright spot was my top 3.

xiso/senji and alpha are new discoveries for me! i don't have much to say about them somehow but i would highly recommend you give them a listen! seni oilai (my 4th most listened song with 54 scrobbles) is the first song in kazakh that i've ever heard! the bass is everything to me- it's like this song was designed to take over my brain lmfao. xiso & senji are what i would call part of the onlyoneof extended cinematic universe. they work together a lot, along with haeil (and iiso iirc) and are doing some really cool stuff right on the edge of kpop and krnb.

kb actually held the #1 artist slot in my library with 219 streams for several months before being overtaken by bibi and lexie liu. he still, however, holds the #1 song spot with be free. oddly enough, i don't even think be free is necessarily "the best" of onlyoneof's solo project (that honor goes to junji's be mine) or the best conceptual execution (that would be yoojung's begin). but it is the one that scratched my brain just right. this project is so good y'all TT

gg releases:

i didn't call this one female releases because the soloists would overwhelm the list lmfao. that said, 2022 was definitely a gg year in kpop! oddly enough, despite primarily being a gg stan i actually don't stan any of the monster rookies that debuted this cycle? and i would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite honestly (i might write a whole post about 4th gen later, we'll see). that said, love dive was undoubtedly my gg soty. i don't have scrobble info for it as i primarily listened to it a ton before i got a tracking app, but according to apply music it was my number one song this year. i'd guess that the real rank is probably between 6 and 13.

lesserafim's the great mermaid isn't for everyone but it was certainly for me! another one that i listened to earlier in the year, so apple music has it at #14. i just think it's really unique and i would lovee to see a performance of it. lsf has a bright future and i'm excited to see where they go from here. (i'm also proud of them for not releasing singles lmfao!)

tripleS...i have so much to say about them that i've circled back around to having nothing to say. their first temporary subunit's mini album, access, was really solid in my opinion, but i know it's not for everyone. regardless, i think that the positive reaction to generation was 100% warranted. it's so fun!! i'll have more to say about them in a later post but yeah. my girls. i'm so excited for ot10 debut early next year!

with how much i loved purplekiss' pretty psycho, it's a bit evil for it to now not be in my top 3. i still think it's a great song (my #7 on apple music) but it's aged a lot more than the other songs on the list, including others on the same album. it's still great though, i just wish it had better choreo and was a title.

IVE - Probably my ult group right now. I like all their songs so much (Love Dive SOTY fuck yeah). They also have a very youthful sort of vibe that I really like

LE SSERAFIM - It took their comeback for me to start getting into them but, it's not actually Antifragile that I really love. That goes to Impurities. It's a really cool song and I like it There's also the fact that they should rename themselves LESSERABS because holy shit it's abs everywhere and yes holy shit Kazuha

NewJeans - I haven't watched any content of them besides the dance practice. I know people really like Hype Boy but Attention is just so good

Kep1er - I don't know who produces their title tracks but it's been up and down for me personally. The only one I can say I really like is Up. I actually didn't wanna get into them simply cause of IZ*ONE but they're all so hilarious and pretty that I can't help myself kek

NMIXX - Now I'm gonna be honest here. I really don't like both of their title tracks. How I feel about them is pretty much the same. I like the songs until the "change". It's kinda sad since their vocals are amazing
