Deception and manipulation. And quite frankly, why I disagree with fanon's vehement inclusion of both for Kafka's character. I've been sitting on this for quite a while now, and I one day want to write a much longer meta on it, but I wanted to "briefly" touch on it for the ones following me, so that you know what to expect, and well, what not to expect.

Nothing within canon inherently thus far to me, has shown Kafka to be dishonest, and it's actually one of the things that further drew me to her character as I continued into HSR, the fact that she isn't. But, I've been re-watching all of her scenes yet again today to see if I can budge myself on this, but I'm still firmly rooted in my belief that Kafka is not deceptive as people make her out to be, and if anything, I feel even stronger about this today than I did yesterday, despite actively trying to find things that would prove the opposite. All I can see, honestly, is that she actively tells the truth when on screen. This entire belief that she's anything akin to deceptive, manipulative, or dishonest is genuinely just an audience's perception that stems from the general, go-to assumption that someone who has been brandished a 'villain' bears every bad trait in existence. And the audience comes to hold that perception because it's what numerous characters on our screen seem to think (one of the earliest examples of this would be Himeko and March 7th, but primarily the latter). She has a bounty of 10.899 billion credits on her head, yes, so far that's the highest that we've seen, but we also know that the Stellaron Hunters have been closely involved with a lot of chaos that's occurred throughout the cosmos (and the other hunters do not possess the ability that she does). But we need to not interlace bad traits where they, in my opinion, don't belong.

Let me elaborate a little bit on my stance here so I don't go haywire in my tags. Also, please note that this touches on her character/dialogue and what we see within the story, her "games" such as the Jepella Rebellion touch on a different element of her character: boredom. That's for another day. Anyway, yes, I will also touch on her spirit whisper, because I know that's also a huge contender into this 'deception' theory.

The first scene that holds proper and deeper nuance that we're witness to, is when she speaks to the Trailblazer in the very beginning after awakening them. We see 'Listen:' at the very beginning, which we know is something she uses to signify the effects of her spirit whisper. Now if one were to simply take her spirit whisper, at its essence, as manipulative and that's that without taking intent and practice into account, then there's nothing I can say, but I will assume that's not the case here. Not anywhere in the lines that follow (and here are the choices), does Kafka insinuate any specific action for the Trailblazer to take, if anything, she insists on the existence of their own choice and will to 'reach the end of their story'. 'Listen' in this entire sequence is a call to attention, in the way that a person can wave their hand in front of your eyes or snap their fingers near you. The Trailblazer in this context is confused, they've just woken up and are unsure where they are, what's happening and perhaps, even who they are exactly. So the call to attention makes total and utter sense. Her spirit whisper isn't merely hypnosis, if you look at its capabilities, it can be used in various ways. Now outside of her SW, you hear the softer and more authentic tone of her voice (for those unaware of what I mean: here) when she speaks to them, and you actively see a change of expression depending on your answer to her that, quite frankly, is too genuine to me alongside the change of voice to take them in any other way than at direct face value. And lastly, she answers every question posed to her by the TB within the time constraints that they are under. Does she answer them elaborately? Not exactly, but there is quite literally, no need for it. She's not being dishonest, she's not being deceptive, she's actually being quite caring, if one dare use the word (and I do).

Second, the Astral Express visit. For starters, not once does she actively use her SW here in any capacity. She reacts to what Himeko says to her, and even entertains the 'accusations' and even gives away a bit of information that by all accounts is true, the Astral Express and Stellaron Hunters both pursue, in their own ways, the most dangerous objects of the universe. They are in some capacity, two sides of the same coin. From thereon out, she doesn't dwindle or waste any time (hers or theirs), she gets to the point of the Xianzhou Luofu, she says where it is, explains what happened, and what she knows will happen if the crew doesn't go there. She also discloses that she wants to retrieve Blade. Does she disclose the entire 'idea' of how they will end up clearing the Stellaron Hunters' reputation? No, but she has no idea on the reliability of any of them, and two (Himeko, and March 7th) seem 'hostile' towards her, and one (Welt) is hesitant at best; there is absolutely zero grounds for her to entrust them with the steps of their plan. Aside from that, the entire plan that we see unfold after that quite literally never endangers any of them, if anything, it only makes them look good, and guess who the Stellaron Hunters would owe a favor to after all of this? The Astral Express. Who would the Xianzhou owe a favor to? The Astral damned Express. The ones going on a limb here, despite having a 'script', is Kafka and the Stellaron Hunters as a whole. Point me at the genuine dishonesty or manipulation in this, and if you want to add a scoop to it, any ill-intent.

And then we get to the actual Luofu. Honestly, I need someone to tell me where she lies. Even before she ever gets captured, and they're chasing after her; right at the beginning, she literally says why the chase continues, and why she's not stopping yet: 'What a hassle, this place is too far for the diviner. See you up ahead.' Take her at face value, it's what she wants from you. Granted, she can profit if you don't (but at this point, I would beg to differ), but she's not trying to get you to believe any lie, if she was, she'd be telling one.

"Best future? Best for who? As if you'd consider anyone but yourself." — March 7th "If I said 'best for the universe', would you believe me? Best for me, naturally." — Kafka

And as much as one might want to try and rub my nose in "it" at this point, I'd like to ask what anyone is trying to rub my nose into. Again, is she not being pretty forthcoming? She's not saying more than she needs to, but that's not being deceptive. If someone doesn't ask for more information, then why should you give them... more information than necessary?

/shakes the bars of my cage. Yes, she uses spirit whisper, we know that she does. But again, this is an audience's perception of a 'villain' at its definition, rather than a judgement call made for one in specific. I understand Fu Xuan, of course, I do, but I'm not taking an 'in-game' stance, I'm sitting in the audience's seat and dissecting what I see.

I just, where is she dishonest? She proceeds to talk to the Trailblazer at length, and goes as far as to admit that the Stellaron Hunters are not entirely innocent. Not once is it claimed that the SH are void of any blame, she takes it, here and during the Jepella Rebellion trailer (even if, yes, it is a mock trial and she's hypnotizing them, yes, I know, "the proof is in the pudding THERE, Sae!", I'm arguing nuance, not a case of 'Kafka is always honest). Guys, she comes clean entirely. I'm starting to go feral, I know, but I just don't understand. I don't get it. /semi-tugs at hair. We're almost at the end of her scenes, and I still don't see it.

I don't understand. I don't understand. And then in 1.2, Waterscale Gorge, she stops them all from fighting, has them stand down. And when Dan Heng asks her what she did, she answers it well enough. And guess who doesn't question it upon his arrival, witnessing it? The 'hotshot General' in question: Jing Yuan.

I understand 'interpretations', but I fail to see how the massive overwhelming part (if not bordering the entirety) of fanon has such a severe attachment to this concept of Kafka being inherently deceptive, or have her whole existence shrouded therein. I don't see where this is the case. We can even look at her trailer, a Dramatic Irony, and look when she speaks at the end to the last guard in question. Some could argue that she lies to him when she offers the flip of the coin, but she doesn't. She never once actually offers him a chance to live, she never once insinuates that if he guesses correctly, that he could live, that is an assumption that the audience makes, rather than it being a choice that she actively presents. 'As for the ending, want to take a guess?' One might try to argue deception with me here, but I'd like to simply fire back: where is her deception? It only exists if you hear something that she never says, that is not something that she puts in your head; that's a choice that you make. A choice, a choice, a choice. The entire thing that she preaches about since the dawn of time when we awoke as the Trailblazer. Where is she lying? It's easy to call someone else out on something that you, yourself, create in your mind. Now do I think an argument can be made, there? Sure, for I absolutely don't make the case for her to be exceptionally and thoroughly 'transparent', but it's all about nuance. It's about, quite honestly, looking at the imagery of a spider. Where is that little quote I came across a while back— ah yes, here:

“The spider's web: She finds an innocuous corner in which to spin her web. The longer the web takes, the more fabulous its construction. She has no need to chase. She sits quietly, her patience a consummate force; she waits for her prey to come to her on their own, and then she ensnares them, injects them with venom, rendering them unable to escape. Spiders – so needed and yet so misunderstood.” — Donna Lynn Hope

An innocuous corner that can be avoided, she doesn't scheme and try to lure you into a web that would mean your destruction; more often than not, you could see it rather well ahead of you, and the intrigue is that you would walk into it almost willingly. It's alluring, it's tempting to those of curious nature that seek to unravel and explain, it's intricate, it's beautiful, why wouldn't you want to draw yourself into it? But the spider at the center is not the one that coaxes you, even if she's the creator of that ever intricate web. And yet, when you get wrapped up into it, she is all encompassing, and most don't come out alive as we see. And your fate is cruel, just like— well, fate is cruel. But is she, like Kafka, manipulative? Or is she, while you may so strongly want to believe the opposite, much more honest than you wish she was? And is that why she is cruel? Is that not the cruelest?

Oh no, I just answered this one with a lot of different responses -- let's see if I can think of something I didn't mention there that's probably really obscure by normal person standards. (Academic, right, so I have no idea what's actually obscure anymore.)

So the Asgardian cosmology that's referenced in both Morning and Yonderverse, but is more plot-relevant in Morning, is totally invented by me, it's not based on anything in canon, but all of the names are from actual Norse mythology. Mimameid, the Cosmos Tree that passes through all the realms (a.k.a. the quantum realm), Ginnungagap, the great void, are both from mythology. I kind of had a breakthrough in figuring out how Asgardians conceptualize their cosmology because my natural inclination when worldbuilding anything is water metaphors (there's some of this in my SW fic), but for an Asgardian it's going to be in trees, because of Yggdrasil the World Tree.

Almost every Asgardian name, place name, mythological background, etc., as well as most but not all of the Nine Realms names are all also from Norse mythology, including Idavoll and Gimle in New Asgard, any new characters (like Ullr and Forseti in New Asgard), institutions or groups like the ulfhednar, places like Urdarbrunnr, the names of Laufey's wives and their individual castles (this hasn't come up yet because it's from a Morning chapter that hasn't been posted yet), what Asgardians swear by (Hati and Skol, Garmr, Surtr -- distinct from the Surtur that appears in the film). None of that's taken 1:1 from mythology, but I'm like filtering it through how the MCU does its worldbuilding and uses mythology, with the idea that like, when we're getting it today as we understand it, it's multiple degrees removed from Asgard. It's not supposed to be accurate to quote-unquote real mythology.

And because I'm a classical historian, I really wanted to logic out how some of that Asgardian worldbuilding, history, etc. interacted with ours, because per canon, Loki and Thor, for example, are really young and they post-date the earliest appearances of proto-Norse mythology (for lack of a better world). So out of all of these, the most obscure thing I looked up would probably be the proto-Germanic gods referred to in classical texts like Tacitus with the idea that they were Asgardians or Vanir who had come to Earth to fuck around in the Bronze Age or Iron Age and later got syncretized with the younger Asgardians that we now think of as the Norse mythological pantheon, who are the characters that appear in the MCU. In other words, Baduhenna was in fact Hela.

Why I think Guardian had a happy-ish open ending (headcanon)

@seventh-fantasy I think you asked for this. If not, ignore.

I think I’m a handful of individuals who watched the last 2 mins of ‘Guardian’ and went, “Hey, they left us an optimistic open ending,” and then proceeded to write a tonne of fix it fic.

I know the Chinese fans are like:

1) ZYL will spend eternity alive and won’t reincarnate

2) Shen Wei doesn’t have a soul so won’t reincarnate

3) They will never reincarnate together and meet again

4) The last 2 mins was all a dream on ZYL’S part because of how Shen Wei was dressed.

So, OK. 1) They said he would be in pain, but considering no one has actually done what zyl did in living memory (at least 10,000 years) that’s a lot of assumptions they are making. Eternity is a long time, and unless zyl is completely unaware, which we know is NOT the case because the last 2 mins of the show is basically him BEING AWARE, which seem to contradict what Zhao Xin Ci/Zhang Shi was telling him. The fact of the matter is whether it is through bad writing or on purpose the writers set up a a paradigm that is extremely questionable BECAUSE NOBODY IN CANON KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT WHAT IT MEANS FOR ZYL TO FUEL THE LAMP. It is basically all conjecture and myths.

In addition, they set up Xiao Guo as somebody who partially lit the Lamp, and he is still ALIVE. There is literally NO REASON THAT THE BURDEN COULDN’T BE SHARED. So, once again, Zhang Shi and Zhao Xin Ci doesn’t know everything, and is basically going, “This what I heard.”

So, if canon CAN’T even figure out the rules of using the Lamp then I can’t trust what they say. Internal consistency is important in fictional universe, and they shat on theirs. My take away, zyl probably suffered a huge amount of pain when he became the source of the Lamp, however beyond that WE DON’T KNOW. Because unless somebody was the fuel for the Lamp, AND THEN CAME BACK, HOW DO THEY KNOW WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS TO THE SOUL. THIS IS A FALLACY RIGHT HERE, GUYS.

And if they writers are set on this idea of eternal torment, then it must mean that whoever became the fuel for the Lamp MUST HAVE RETURNED TO LIVING BECAUSE OTHERWISE HOW DO WE KNOW THE SOUL SUFFERED FOREVER, AND OH YEAH, WHY DID IT STOP BEING LIT IN THE FIRST PLACE. WELL?

See what I did there? LOGIC IT OUT, PEOPLE.

In conclusion, if we stay within the paradigm of the TV fictional universe and rules then it must mean there is a possibility zyl returned to living sometime in the future. The question is when. He could literally be the fuel for over 10,000 years and still step out a week, a year after the show BECAUSE TIME IS ALL MAGICAL IN THE WORMHOLE.

Also, THE COSMOS IS HUGE, NO WAY IN HELL YOU CAN’T HAVE A MILLION TINY BITS OF SOULS FROM A MILLION YEARS ALL LIGHTING THE LAMP. No offence ro zyl but I think that’s probably better.

2) Shen Wei does not have a soul - Chinese fans, I love you, but this is a case of please DON’T mesh book and TV canon verse together. They are two separate entities. The TV verse never at any point mention that Shen Wei or Dixing people does not have souls. Therefore, in the TV universe they do have souls. It is why while I like the new book epilogue it is NOT TV canon for me. This is fine, but it doesn’t work for me.

3) I’m not a fan of reincarnation in the TV show because the TV show does NOT SET IT UP. Therefore, the reincarnation possibility didn’t occur to me. Sorry. It just DOESN’T EXIST IN THE TV VERSE. So, this is invalid.

4) The last 2 mins or so AKA Psychedelic Love Induced Pocket Dimension. OK a) Chinese fans, you can’t say that SW’S outfit is a sign of zyl’s delusions on wanting to see SW again because he is wearing the same outfit as when he first met zyl. Because if you do think this is a delusion on ZYL’S part, then WTF do you think was the last scene BETWEEN Ye Zun and Shen Wei.

So, either both are delusions and didn’t happen, or both are true and it was Shen Wei attempting to say goodbye to his loved ones by dressing up as what they know him as best. For Ye Zun it is the 10,000 years ago get up, for zyl it is the Professor Shen dress up. So, depending on what you think it will influence your interpretation of the ending. BUT YOU CANNOT APPLY ONE SET OF RULES ON ONE SCENARIO AND THEN CHANGE IT IN A SIMILAR SCENARIO WITHIN THE SAME EPISODE.

5) My interpretation; zyl probably felt immense pain by sacrificing his soul to fuel the Lamp. But he is aware of who he is, and eventually learns how to use some of the Lamp’s ability, i.e. accessing the wormhole, which has been established by show as something that is doable by the Hallow. The question is how long did it take him. I honestly don’t know and that’s up to individual interpretation. Once he access the wormhole he is confronted by Shen Wei, the last 2 mins of the show. Once again, unsure how long it has been.

My headcanon for Shen Wei being in the wormhole is 5a) Shen Wei is linked to the Hallow, the show even theories that Shen Wei might have survived 10,000 years because of the Hallow.

5b) WE STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT HE SAW EXACTLY WHEN HE HEALED ZYL’S BLINDNESS. And if it is not written I can headcanon, it is heavily implied that SW executed his plans to take down SW post seeing whatever he saw when using the Hallow. So, if he saw zyl’s end you think he is just gonna LET IT HAPPEN WITHOUT A FUCKING LOOPHOLE?!!!! So, the gaps and holes in the script for me means Shen Wei knew how this was going to play out as soon as he healed zyl’s blindness, and then went about setting up the major steps to get there, and made sure he had access to the wormhole just before his death. There is no time in the wormhole, Shen Wei can wait forever, he is used to it.

5c) Because people, remember that both of them don’t have a physical body presently. They can’t age.

5d) Shen Wei’s little bet; I honestly think Shen Wei didn’t know if he could have made it into the wormhole to see zyl, but once there the sky’s the limit. They are in a wormhole where time does not exist or moves very slowly. They can see how the Hallow were created!!!!! SEE WHAT I DID? USE CANON PARADIGM TO HEADCANON. They can access all of time and space. They can drag out their 2 mins into 10,000 years or more.

5e) So, my headcanon, they stayed for however long they needed to stay in that wormhole to explore and learn. Shen Wei’s ability is learning. They see into the past of how the Hallow were made, figure out a way to gather many bits of souls to not only depend on zyl, and then once they accomplish all this, create bodies and leave the bloody thing. And live happily ever after.

(Look, you can’t tell me that Shen Wei wouldn’t have set things up to try and get zyl out of this whole fiasco alive. Just no. And you can’t tell me it is an unhappy ending when THE TV SHOW’S INCONSISTENCIES LEAD TO A BETTER ANSWER.).

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Coastal Farmhouse Design

Hello, everyone! How are you all feeling after the long weekend? We finally could slow down a little after a busy week and really take in all the great things summer has to offer in… which includes days without any plans. Those are the best days, in my opinion. It’s just wonderful to wake up and not have anything on your to-do list. You don’t have any appointments, any big errands, nothing… all you need to do is wake up whenever you body chooses to, prepare a healthy breakfast and let the day unfold as it goes. The older my kids get, the more I enjoy our calm and easy summers!!!

Chrissy’s home is one of the most beautiful homes I have seen lately and I feel that it captures my personal feeling about how we should live, especially at this time of the year. Chrissy is a busy mom of four, she is extremely talented and I couldn’t be happier to have her on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. “Hi everyone! My name is Chrissy of @chrissymarieblog. I am thrilled to contribute to Home Bunch. When we were building our home I was constantly scrolling through Luciane’s Home Bunch blog for ideas and inspiration! It’s exciting to pay it forward and inspire others now that we have been living in our home for over a year. I love answering questions about our own experience so feel free to reach out.

I grew up in Durham NC, left for college where I met my now husband, and a few years after getting married moved back home to NC and started our family. The 2008 economic recession happened right around that same time, and we were able to buy a 1970s home in an older neighborhood. The neighborhood itself was seeing hard times and our new home was surrounded by foreclosures. We were so grateful to be able to have space and a yard to raise our young kids- the age and the maintenance the home needed didn’t scare us off. That home was a DIY haven for me: it nurtured my creativity and taught me how to be brave enough to change things myself that I didn’t love. Fast forward a few years and we were parents of 4 children, all our bedrooms were filled up, and the neighborhood was doing much better. Now the homes around us were selling within days. Meanwhile, I was dreaming of living in a place with sidewalks, a community, and kids riding bikes outside. My husband is a Realtor, and we would go look at homes all the time together. I was picky- and too busy being a Mom to want another “project house”. One day he made a side comment saying “people like you would just be better off building”. I don’t think he expected me to take that to heart. We switched strategies and started looking at land- we found one of the last lots available in an established neighborhood that checked off all the boxes and our next adventure began!

Kevin Poythress, of Poythress Construction Company was our builder and he was fantastic to work with. My goal right from the beginning was lots of windows, a clean look and a fairly open living space. Although we are 2.5 hours from the beach, I love a coastal vibe and I tried to keep that relaxed feeling in this home. The best part about my home though is how I know our children appreciate it; it’s a place they tell us they love coming home to. Truly the best part of any home is that it is yours, and you are free to make memories all your own in your home. There’s nothing my husband and I love more than putting on some music in the kitchen, sharing a little wine together, and chatting over the island while he cooks up something yummy.”

The Moon Moves into Late Night, Mars Remains, and we Welcome Comet Wirtanen!

Public Astro-Events

Every Monday evening, York University’s Allan I. Carswell Observatory runs an online star party - broadcasting views from four telescopes/cameras, answering viewer questions, and taking requests! Details are here. On Wednesday nights they offer free public viewing through their rooftop telescopes. If it’s cloudy, the astronomers give tours and presentations. Details are here.

At 7 pm on Tuesday evening, November 27 at York University’s Nat Taylor Cinema, everyone is invited to attend a free screening of the new astronomy-focused film Clara, followed by a Q&A with the writer/director and York astronomy professors Paul Delaney and John Moores, who consulted on the film. Details are here.

At 7:30 pm on Wednesday evening, November 28 at the Ontario Science Centre, the OSC and RASC-Toronto Centre will present another event in their Great Conversations series. This year’s speaker is Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. Rainer Weiss, speaking about the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the way gravitational waves will probe the universe in a new way. Tickets and details are here.

On Thursday, November 29 at 7 pm at The Spice Factory, McMaster University will host Science on Tap Hamilton, featuring fun, science, and beer! Details about this free 19+ event are here.

On Friday, November 30, starting at 7 pm, U of T’s AstroTour will present their free planetarium show entitled The Life and Death of Stars. Details are here.

If it’s sunny on Saturday morning, December 1 from 10 am to noon, astronomers from the RASC Toronto Centre will be setting up outside the main doors of the Ontario Science Centre for Solar Observing. Come and see the Sun in detail through special equipment designed to view it safely. This is a free event (details here), but parking and admission fees inside the Science Centre will still apply. Check the RASC Toronto Centre website or their Facebook page for the Go or No-Go notification.

On Saturday, December 1, starting at 7 pm, U of T’s AstroTour will present their free planetarium show entitled Grand Tour of the Cosmos. Details are here.

Bright Comet Alert

For some time now, astronomers have been eagerly awaiting the return of a periodic comet named 46P/Wirtanen. This comet traverses the solar system like a commuter train - shuttling between the orbits of Jupiter and Earth on a 5.4 year-long cycle. But this December’s return is a special one for star-gazers throughout the world.

(Above: The orbit of comet 40P/Wirtanen crosses the solar system between Jupiter’s and Earth’s orbital distances on a 5.4 year loop. This year, when that comet is near perihelion and at maximum brightness, Earth will be nearby, setting up the potential for a naked-eye comet in our skies.)

When any comet reaches perihelion, its closest approach to the sun, it becomes the most active – growing a halo (or coma) around its “dirty snowball” core and sporting one (or two) tails composed of released gases and dropped particles. Comet Wirtanen’s perihelion is only 6% farther from the sun than Earth’s orbit. Most of the time, Earth is somewhere else when the comet passes perihelion. But this year, Earth will be sitting nearby when that event occurs on December 12. And we’ll be even closer to the comet, only 11.5 million km from it, a few days later on December 16!

What all this means is that we are hopeful that Comet 46P/Wirtanen will appear larger and brighter this year. It might even become bright enough to see without binoculars at locations away from artificial lights, especially when the moon is out of the night sky. We can start enjoying the comet now, even while it is still brightening. By the end of this week, the moon will be waning to a crescent and rising after midnight, leaving the sky darker for comet hunting.

Comets move faster across the sky when they are near perihelion. This week, the comet will be gradually shifting higher, passing through the southeastern section of the dim constellation of Cetus (the Whale). By 10 pm local time, the comet will be directly over the southern horizon. At the latitude of Toronto, it will be about two fist diameters high. Unfortunately, there aren’t any bright objects nearby to help you find it right now, but that will change in the coming weeks when the comet will be MUCH higher in the sky and passing through Taurus and then Auriga.

The Moon and Planets

This week finds the moon waning and rising later in the night after the recent Full Frost moon. Tonight (Sunday), the moon will be among the legs of Gemini (the Twins). When the waning gibbous moon rises at about 9:15 pm local time on Tuesday, it will be located less than a palm’s width below the large open star cluster known as the Beehive and Messier 44 in Cancer (the Crab). The moon and the cluster will both fit within the field of view of binoculars, or a telescope at low magnification - but the bright moon will overwhelm most of the stars.

On Thursday, the moon will reach its Last Quarter phase, when it will be half-illuminated on its western side – toward the pre-dawn sun. At its last quarter phase, the moon rises around midnight and remains visible in the southern sky half of the sky all morning. After this phase, the waning moon will traverse the last quarter of its orbit around the earth, on the way to next week’s new moon.

Next Sunday morning in the southeastern sky, the elderly waning crescent moon will sit above the very bright planet Venus, after that planet rises at about 4 am local time. Independent of the moon’s monthly visits near her, Venus will be situated in that part of the sky for quite a while. It’s located only about four finger widths to the lower left of the bright white star Spica in Virgo (the Maiden) and drawing farther away from that star every morning. Viewed through a telescope, Venus will exhibit a slim crescent phase similar to the moon’s.

We are quickly running out of evening planets to look at. Mercury and Jupiter are crossing close to the sun now and will soon become pre-dawn objects. Yellowish Saturn is getting closer to the sunset, too. This week, the ringed planet will already be less than a fist’s diameter above the southwestern horizon by the time the sky gets dark at 6 pm local time. The increased amount of Earth’s atmosphere we have to look through when objects are that low will make Saturn “swim” in your telescope. (The Earth’s blanket of air is thinnest directly overhead.)

Thank goodness for Mars! Mars will remain visible, even while it shrinks in size and brightness, until next May. This week, the reddish planet will shine as the brightest object in the lower part of the southern evening sky among the stars of Aquarius. It will set in the west at about midnight local time.

Mars’ orbital motion has been carrying it eastward, directly towards distant Neptune. The two planets will get very cosy next week. Tonight, Mars will be located a generous palm’s width to the lower right (west) of Neptune. Next Sunday night, Mars will be only half that distance away from the blue, ice giant planet. All week long, Neptune will be visible after dusk. It will reach its highest point over the southern sky (and at the best viewing conditions) at about 6:30 pm local time, and then set in the west at about midnight.

Blue-green Uranus (“YOU-ran-us”) is in the southeastern evening sky. It’s still close to its peak brightness (magnitude 5.7) and size for this year. You can see Uranus without optical aid under very dark skies, but binoculars and telescopes will make seeing it easier. Look for Uranus about 1.5 finger widths to the upper left (east) of the modestly bright star Torcular (Omega Piscium). That star sits a generous palm’s width above the “V” where the two starry cords of Pisces (the Fishes) meet. By late evening, Uranus will be high enough in the southeastern sky to see it clearly.

Don’t forget to look for the major main belt asteroid Juno. It recently reached opposition, causing it to appear at its brightest and largest for this year. This week, the magnitude 7.45 object will be visible in binoculars and small telescopes all night long after it rises in the east at 6 pm local time. Juno will be positioned about two fist diameters from the bright stars Aldebaran in Taurus (the Bull) and Rigel in Orion (the Hunter). It will reach its highest position, about halfway up the southern sky, just before midnight local time.
