I've really been enjoying running a Stars Without Number campaign. The GM tools are delicious and I constantly have stuff to work with, I also think I'm really suited to sci-fi, as much as I enjoy good fantasy, there's more room in a sci-fi space travel setting and I feel more comfortable making stuff up in my own little sector of space.

My players are currently investigating a violent first contact incident with a ton of twists and I feel like it came so naturally from the GM sector and world creation tools SWN has. It freed me up to make all these cool little connecting details instead of worrying about the big picture.

MEGALOMANIACAL AND HARDER THAN THE REST

Tested out a bit of Stars Without Number the other day, so of course that means the chance to design a PC.

Her name is Avanti, she's a smuggler/thief and I feel it's a miracle she survived her first outing, since SWN holds no punches (a trap nearly took her out as it was). It's just her and her space-exploring buddy out to do some adventures.

Saving the best till last, this is Morgan! Aka Morgana “Morgi” Angharad fverch Dagon ap Rastopher Vandimir, ferch Mayling von Vahaus. She’s a feudal noble from an ocean planet I played in a long-running Stars Without Number campaign. A feudal engine of violence with a habit of taking trophies and a deeply held delusion of invincibility (buoyed by extensive subdermal armour implants), her standout moments include:

•Winning a duel over a starship by simply waiting to get shot in the face then firing back.

•Developing psychic powers after ingesting space rock (despite a superstitious phobia of “witches”).

•Stepping up to fight a bioengineered horror in melee as a delaying action.

•“Winning” another duel (surviving until another party member sniped them) after being poisoned, hacked about, and set upon by a giant cat.

•Killing three elite psychic commandos in six seconds.

•Dealing with an anomalous silicon intelligence by launching it bodily into the system’s sun.

She’ll always be my blorbo, probably my favourite character in years of roleplaying. Shine on you crazy 21 year old dolt.

I also run a Stars Without Number (like D&D but sci-fi and with better DM support) game for adults. Some would call adults that you play games with "friends" I prefer to refer to them as "my peculiars".

Anyway, we've just finished our Thursday session and here are some of the pearls that were said in tonight's game:

1. Zeta (about Razz): I hope we can help her reunite with her people...and then leave her.

2. Someone (I forget who): Clowns don't fuck about!!

3. Bonghi (exasperated and somewhat jealous): How did you guys get FUCKING BATTERIES!?

4. Charlie (Gushes about how interested he is in this new planet for a good few minutes) // Zeta: Sorry, mate. I had headphones in. What?

5. After a poor, put-upon border agent has had to deal with the party's malarkey and finally lets them through // Zeta: I slip them a 'Type-A Battery'.

6. To a cab driver who is looking at Razz with shock and alarm // Zeta: You can leave. I can't.

And 7 was out of character (OOC) // Me (35) to Steph (28): We were around for 9/11!! // Steph: So was I!!!!! No one told me it was happening, though.
