When history fails to shed light on the truth, myth creates its own.
Eadaz "Ead" du Zala uq-Nāra, Sabran Berethnet and Miduchi Tané from The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon.
i had the wonderful opportunity to visit @sshannonauthor at kinokuniya sydney on the 19th, and it was such a lovely and inspiring time to hear exactly how the world of priory was created and why things existed in it!
to anyone looking for a queer feminist retelling (of st. george and the dragon) with IMMENSELY engaging worldbuilding and characters, i do highly recommend priory!

Tpotot spoilers
I want to know what's gonna happen once Sabran abdicates. Is she going to live in the priory with Ead? Is Ead also going to advocate and there gonna live in a cosy little house together? Is she going to stay at court?

(look I keep forgetting Sabran is taller, the tall warrior/short lady trope is too strong I guess...)

ok but fantasy books where two main characters are allies but don’t really care about each other and suddenly there’s a big twist and now they’re pining and now there’s slow burn and now there is a tiny mini little romantic interaction and now you throw your book across the room because KISS ALREADY DAMN-

Hi Sam -- just finished TPOTOT (loved every moment of it) and have a silly question for you! I always imagined that Ead was taller than Sabran or similar in height (bc she's always kissing Sabran on the temple which doesn't seem very easy if you're the shorter one) but I've seen some other readers comment that Sabran is the taller one! Who's taller?! :)
Sabran is taller! Ead is 5"10' and Sab is 6"1'

i love how ead was utterly clueless about her feelings for sabran like?
And when she saw sabran kissing lievelyn?
she’s like WHAT THE FUCK is this unpleasant feeling mother help me??? and then when sabran finally kissed her
she only realized then that she was, in fact, Yearning

Priory of the Orange Tree really said gay rights!!
(As always click for better quality)
I love this book so much,,,, and I wanted to do some art of the two main couples! (Ead & Sabran on the left, young Niclays & Jannart on the right). Made using this template bc I am not good enough at art to draw without some kinda reference, if anyone knows the original artist lemme know!
Individuals drawings:
1. Eadaz & Sabran
I've drawn these girls before, but I tried a bit of a different style this time ^^ It's nothing amazing but it was fun to just draw some cute sapphics
2. Young Niclays & Jannart
I've never seen any art of these 2 so I decided to fix that hole myself! However I had to kinda guess what they looked like (the book descriptions are kinda vague) and I'm not too sure if I did a good job. I just love these two so much
(Unpopular opinion ig but Niclays is precious and one of my favourite characters, he's had such a shitty life and if anyone else hurts him I will hunt them down and stab them)
Anyways I hope you enjoy :)
