I’d learned quickly, as a matter of survival, that I needed to take opportunities as they came—if they came—and to look forward to the future.

Lion (2016, Garth Davis)
20/11/2023
Lion is a 2016 film directed by Garth Davis.
Based on the memoir A Long Way Home, the film tells the true story of Saroo Brierley who is played by Dev Patel. The cast also includes Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman. The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, taking 2nd place in the Audience Award.
Khandwa, central India, 1986 - Saroo, five years old, second son of a very poor family, who survives with his older brother Guddu by collecting waste metals, asks the other to be able to work at night in a station near their home village. In search of his brother, the child mistakenly boards a deserted train that leaves and does not stop, taking him to Calcutta, about 1600 kilometers away.
Lost in the chaotic metropolis, not speaking the local Bengali language, Saroo survives on the streets. Hosted by people of ill repute, he manages to escape, only to be noticed by a young employee who speaks his Hindi language and who takes him to a police station so that, by publishing his photo in the newspapers, someone can recognize him. Saroo leaves for Hobart in Tasmania, where he grows up and becomes an adult.
At the age of 27, Saroo is a university student in Melbourne, with numerous Indian friends and loved ones, but he has not forgotten his roots and his family, for which he feels a sense of guilt due to his disappearance. At his girlfriend's insistence, the young man begins researching through Google Earth, desperately searching for his home village based on his fading memories, until he recognizes from a satellite image what appears to be the starting station.
Filming began in January 2015 in Calcutta, India, and continued in mid-April, in Australia, in the cities of Melbourne and Hobart.
The film had its world premiere on 10 September 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival and subsequently at the London Film Festival and the Rome Film Festival. It was released in US cinemas on 25 November 2016 by The Weinstein Company, while distribution began in Australia on 19 January 2017, and in Italy it was released on 22 December 2016.
For the film Sia composed the song Never Give Up, released as a promotional single.
The score was composed by Dustin O'Happellon and Hauschka and was nominated for Best Original Score at the 2017 Oscars.

Book Review: Lion: A Long Way Home by: Saroo Brierley
I feel strongly that from my being a little lost boy with no family to becoming a man with two, everything was meant to happen just the way it happened. And I am profoundly humbled by that thought. Lion: A Long Way Home by: Saroo Brierley Initial Thoughts: It is a rare occurrence when my parents and I can sit down and watch a movie together that we all enjoy. On occasion, we’ll watch a movie…

St Patrick's Day Preference
Tumblr media
A/N: I do know I have readers from all across the world, so if you're not up on what Saint Patrick's Day is, do click here!
Anwar Kharral: I feel like Anwar's a little but over it. He's gotten into too many scrapes during St. Paddy's day when he and Maxxie move to London. He's older now, more tame, this doesn't mean he won't be wearing green! You won't catch him slipping!
Sonny Kapoor: I feel like he'll make a theme night at the hotel. The Irish guests are more than happy to listen to a power point about St. Patrick and absolutely house some baked potatoes, and are in bed by 9. I feel like Sonny is very popular with the Irish residents at the hotel, and he uses the holiday to pay the affection back.
Neal Sampat: Neal's not really a fan. In his defense, it's New York, and the two of you know it's different here. You guys do last minute grocery runs two days before and make it a point to hole up and not go anywhere on the day. God forbid you do, it's like doing a marathon, some kind of gauntlet. No ma'am, don't call, you guys are at the apartment.
Deon Wilson: He's baby! I feel like maybe the two of you go out early, like at 4-5, have a drink, and get overstimulated and go home (valid). Maybe you guys watch the 2001 Disney Channel Classic "Luck of the Irish" before going to bed.
Sheru “Saroo” Brierley: Saroo likes going out and drinking with his friends! You do too! The both of you aren't exactly marathon-holiday-enjoyers or bar-hoppers (at least not anymore), but if your friend group brings the energy, you guys are there! No green-colored drinks though.
Jay Menha: No ma'am. He's at home. He's in bed by 8. He's got his earplugs in. People celebrating the day are too loud and too touchy, he's not doing that. If he's called in to work a paramedic shift, he'll do it, but he'll be grumpy the whole time!
David Copperfield: In principle, David is a fan of the day. He loves seeing how happy people get to celebrate Ireland and being Irish! This being said, last time he actually went out, he started his evening *in* London, and somehow ended up in Birmingham deli where he came to 48 hours later. He's not gonna do that again.
Joshua Madika: Girl, I feel like he's a little too domestic for this holiday. When he was single and rebounding, maybe, but now his knees hurt, and he's literally got too much money to go out and party with the people! Chances are he's gonna book you both a spa day or something, and ignore it in general.
Sir Gawain: This may sound harsh, but I don't think he know Ireland is a real place. He'll drink, party, the two of you will have a great night out, but he's 100% certain Ireland is made up. He has been there multiple times.
Dr. Chatterjee: I feel like he's a bit cranky on the holiday. He's a doctor first and foremost, so he's really spent too many evenings in the ER pumping stomachs overfilled with green beer. He thinks the history behind it is neat, but he's overall not a big fan.

Creative Decision
19/09/2024
Hi everyone! This post is related to one of the requirements for the stage 2 checklist.
For this requirement, we have to analyze how our creative decisions for the opening scene support the plot/themes/narrative of the film.
Here's a screenshot of the 3 points I wrote down for this requirement in my 'stage 2' presentation. I'm hoping to add more points as I type along.
Tumblr media
Now, let me elaborate on each point....
Shows the untold perspective of young Shekila dealing with the loss of her brothers.
In the film, Shekila's character hardly has any dialog and is only seen twice. (As a 2-year-old child and in the end as a young adult) So it was a good opportunity for me to make use of her as a secondary character and put her under the spotlight.
Even though the rewritten version of the opening scene has no dialog, the audience gets a chance to place themselves in little Shekila's shoes and feel the grief she is facing at a young age.
2. Makes usage of the timeline jumps from the film.
While watching the scene in the film where Saroo runs away from Noor, it transitions into her memory of his where he runs to help Kamla (his mother) to lift rocks.
Since I noticed such timeline jumps between the past and the present, I wanted to create something similar when sharing Shekila's story.
3. Showcases Kamla's efforts to find Saroo.
In the film, we only get to know that Kamla decided to stay back in the village, hoping that Saroo will come back. We don't see any efforts made by her to search for Saroo since he is the main focus of the story. We have to tag along with him as he runs on his journey to survival.
For this rewritten opening scene of mine, not only did I want to show Shekila's dealing with grief, but I wanted to show Kamla's efforts to find Saroo. In addition, in Kamla's character sheet, I have dressed her in one of her work outfits. This is to show that regardless of being tired from her labor-intensive workload, she is willing to visit the train station many a time to find her missing son. It goes to show the beauty of motherhood/mother's love.
4. Visuals of the 'Yellow Butterfly.'
Tumblr media
As I have mentioned in some of my previous posts, the 'Yellow' butterfly is symbolic as a spiritual emblem and represents the transformation Saroo had to go through to find his identity.
In an interview, Garth Davis mentions that the real Saroo Brierley did in fact see a yellow butterfly from time to time on his lonesome and horrific journey in Calcutta. He strongly believed that this butterfly was actually Guddu's spirit, guiding him down the right path.
Keeping this in mind, I wanted to create a scene where Guddu's spirit appears to Shekila to give her some comfort during times of grief. I truly believe, if Guddu's spirit visited Saroo to guide him, I'm sure he would've appeared to Shekila at least once to comfort her.

Movie Review: "Lion" (2016)
Lion is a deeply moving biographical drama that brings together powerful performances, stunning cinematography, and a heart-wrenching true story. Directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel in one of his finest roles, Lion is the story of Saroo Brierley, a young Indian boy who gets lost hundreds of miles from home, and his incredible journey to find his family years later using Google Earth.
Dev Patel, playing the older Saroo, brings a quiet intensity to the role, portraying a man torn between his adoptive Australian family and the yearning to reconnect with his roots. Patel's performance is beautifully complemented by Sunny Pawar, who plays the young Saroo with an innocence and vulnerability that leaves a lasting impression.
The film’s narrative is split into two parts. The first half focuses on young Saroo’s harrowing experience after being separated from his family. It's a gut-wrenching portrayal of survival, loneliness, and the reality faced by millions of lost children in India. The second half of the movie shifts to the adult Saroo, now living a comfortable life in Australia, as he begins his obsessive search to find his birthplace and biological family.
Nicole Kidman, playing Saroo's adoptive mother, also delivers an emotionally charged performance, highlighting the complexities of adoption and the deep love she has for her son. The bond between Saroo and his adoptive family is one of the film's emotional anchors, making his internal struggle all the more poignant.
The cinematography captures both the vast landscapes of rural India and the urban sprawl of Kolkata, contrasting with the quiet suburban life in Australia. The music score by Volker Bertelmann and Dustin O'Halloran is equally evocative, adding depth to the emotional journey without overpowering the narrative.
What makes Lion stand out is its authenticity. It doesn’t manipulate emotions for the sake of drama; instead, it allows the story’s inherent emotional depth to resonate naturally with the audience. The film touches on themes of identity, belonging, and the idea that no matter where life takes us, there’s an undeniable pull to the place we come from.
In summary, Lion is a beautifully crafted film that tugs at the heartstrings without ever feeling forced. It’s a story of hope, love, and the indomitable spirit of a boy who never gave up on finding home. Dev Patel's heartfelt performance, coupled with Garth Davis's sensitive direction, makes Lion a must-watch for anyone who enjoys powerful, emotional storytelling.
