i'm so glad you asked bc i love giving my opinion..... first things first, this is REALLY FUCKING FUNNY, the way that Watcher fumbled the bag so badly when they made their announcement probably gave the tryguys a lot of data to work with. obviously everyone is comparing the two things, but in this instance, I actually think the streaming service thing makes more sense, and is done in a better way, with less guilt tripping and more like, Hype. so the most relevant thing, nothing about the youtube channel is going to change, no previously free content is going to be paywalled, new videos are going to keep airing. so somebody who missed the news or isn't inch rested isn't going to have a different experience at all. new shows are going to be on there, but also they're Already On There. like, a lot of episodes. stuff is going to be released earlier on there, uncensored videos, new people showing up (tryguys already has a lot of Talent), and live ticketed events that they normally charge for are gonna be included in the subscription. so like, this sounds justifiable as a thing that you'd Pay For. Watcher was going to put their whole back catalog behind a paywall, they only had a couple of shows plus One New Steven Food Show that was gonna go on their streaming thing, and they were going to stop posting to youtube except for the first episode from each new season of a thing. and the Watcher one was still priced a dollar higher. and they have a very small cast of talent. also, it was a Streaming Service, but it was still something you could only watch in a browser, not on a TV or anything. so it was just a website. the one that tryguys have is actually an app you can have on your tv. like on a roku or whatever. so I think that's another point in its favor. you can't launch a "streaming service" that you can't even watch on your tv.

overall, I think it tracks, they've been a business for a lot longer and they've started a bunch of new shows to go on there, the announcement video wasn't Whiny and Guilt Trippy, it seems like they put more thought into this. also I got a free trial to poke around, which, I do like that that's an option. timing could have been better, some people are being pussies about it in a major way, which is to be expected, and I am basically ambivalent to it, I don't plan on paying, but it seems like it's had a lot more thought put into it, and it could actually be sustainable as a platform running alongside their youtube channel. done correctly, it could be their Mythical Society. if it flops, they aren't alienating their youtube audience.

#they'll probably need to adapt a few things: mainly their pricing for other countries / currencies #bc just converting $5 to other currencies isn't straight-up-and-down they actually have to scale it down a lot of the time #i'm sure it can be done #and I think that they should add a social aspect to their service-- I think a comment section on videos #is an underrated part of one of the things ppl like about youtube #so I think some type of comment section or forum thingy would be good #sergle answers

ok my OTHER reflection:

on the one hand its really frustrating to see the posts about docs and healthcare in general on here be so narrow-minded. bad experiences with certain providers have lead to a huge spread of misinformation and mistrust with the whole system. which can and HAS lead to people avoiding 'evil' doctors for perfectly treatable illnesses and dying from them (the vaccine bullshit, anyone?)

but on the other hand. it is TERRIFYING how some of these docs practice medicine. at times i think 'are you just burned out and don't give a shit or are you straight up just stupid?' and i work in critical care. where quite literally every case is life or death. even in the academic sector where there is supposedly a standard of excellence, some doctors i would not let touch my loved ones with a ten foot pole.

and that sucks. i know this is the no nuance piss on the poor webbed site but 'the medical system and people that work for it are fallible and aspects of it are morally questionable at best/unethical at worst' AND 'the field of medicine exists to help people first and foremost and mistrusting/avoiding it can be detrimental in the long run' can and DO co-exist

#also. folks i hate to tell you but 'doctors get big pharma kickbacks and they can cure you but just choose not to to get more money'#is a very tempting conspiracy theory. but it is SO UNTRUE.#hey listen. if someone is telling you they can 'cure' your disease magically if you just take x vitamin THEY ARE LYING #even miraculous cures like bone marrow transplants for autoimmune disease and CAR-T therapy #have such severe side-effects that they quite literally kill you #i can't tell you how many times i've taken care of people who #had their cancer 'cured' but the treatment ruined their kidneys/heart/lungs #or fucked their immune system so bad that a common bacteria could completely take them out #anyone selling you miracles is L Y I N G #i understand that a lot of this anger is around disability and chronic illness and psych and i get that. intimately.#its 100% accurate to say that a patient who researched independently about ehlers-danlos or POTS knows more about it than i do.#and its hard to see the profession as 'people who sincerely ARE trying to help' when you actively work with people who fucking suck #and you think like 'you went to school. you went through all this training. you (presumably) passed boards'#we should have at least around the same level of knowledge #but that is often not the case #still #making large scale statements about an entire profession (especially when its supposed to be a civic service) is just... not good #my two cents rec for this is:#if you think you have something rare or unusual try to find a doc that specialized in this i.e. go to an academic center.#trainees are less set in their ways and can think outside the box PLUS if there are new/innovative treatments they would have them #if you need pretty much ANY surgery. private is the way to go #you want surgeons with high volume and experience #surgical techniques do not change on the dime. most havent changed in 50+ years. a lot of other medicine DOES #(this of course does not apply to specialized surgeries like whipple or PTE or schwannoma resection - go to academics for that)#if its REALLY rare whether medical or surgical your GP will not know what to do with you #academic centers are referral centers. they are more likely to have the right tools to diagnose/treat #where was i going with this?#oh yeah i had an odd interaction with an ED doc admitting to me last night that was NOT practicing within current standard of care #and was just so casual and assured i started to doubt MYself. like. am I the crazy one?!?!#like i'm young i dont know everything SURE

How Big is a Kilometer-Long Airship?

Per this post from Phil, Castle Wulfenbach is a kilometer long.

This is Very Large. Upsettingly Large, even.

It's so large I had to think about starships to get a handle on how large that is.

Here is an Upsetting Diagram to illustrate just how big a 1000-m airship would be by comparison to other things normally considered big.

Everything is proportional to that 1000-meter bar along the top, but keep in mind that this view of Castle Wulfenbach is foreshortened.

it feels like virtually every solution to societal ills involves everyone slowing down a bit and settling a bit and these are absolutely fundamentally existentially unacceptable terms and so it is never going to get better

I miss kingdom hearts. The death of portable consoles really was a huge loss for a lot of japanese franchises but i feel no big franchise was hit as hard as KH. The only thing we have to look forward nowadays are fuckass mobile games and one big console title every decade. This sucks man...

started thinking about the okipara museum artwork and i just realized what flower 18!kara is holding in it.

those are alstroemeria, which can mean perseverance and yearning for the future in hanakotoba....

I'm about to sound stupid as fuck and I'm okay with that. AND I don't disagree with anyone who is mad about this. my problem is that as someone who is subscribed to dropout idk how to articulate the difference betwen Shane and Ryan of unsolved fame making their own streaming service and dropout doing the same once they got rid of the CH branding.
