help i didnt know asks were off fixed that now thank you... I have two fics i keep in my back pocket as like, exemplary distillations of their whole thing (one in college vs one of their usual superhero stuff,) these are;

Supersymmetry and Night Blooms

Rly good examples of their usual shenanigans, the second one is directly based on a canon comic issue that *feels* like fanfic by a prolific yaoi author, the first is set in a modern-time re-imagining of the fantastic four where they meet in a supergenius internship thinktank for gifted youngsters. There's other fics that are good but i think they might be super confusing without canon context! which leads me to my second point. After you read these fics...

A lot, and i mean A LOT of official doomreed stuff feels straight up like fanfic. Either because its so beautifully woven or insane in concept (doctor doom points a gun at the real life Jack Kirby and Stan Lee to get himself written back into reed's life in his 3rd ever classic appearance, in the 60's, THAT'S the bodyswap issue)

or because the literal authors themselves come out to say 'they're soulmates' or 'they're in love' and Im talking abt this:

There's even an RPG INSTRUCTION MODULE based on the idea of an earth where Reed & Victor partner up in college, Reed dies a tragic death (via their lab experiments) and Victor assumes such a traumatized widow role in his honor that he grows up to be a golden hero and protector of earth LOL (still a bit nuts):

This is not even to touch on the breadth of all their comic issues and little moments together. Victor canonically delivers Reed's second child and he chooses her name! Shes treated like his child too and calls him uncle doom!!

...Victor even asks Reed out on candlelit dinner dates for a yearly Latverian holiday!

Even when I was a child all I ever saw was war, death and sorrow but even through all the sadness, there was a sort of beauty.

My grandmother always told me that if I couldn't find a beauty in something depressing then there was no point in living in this dog eat dog world.

My father always hated that I thought like that. I don't blame him though, he was jealous. He was jealous he couldn't have that childlike optimism as he faced death and savagery almost every day as he is a well known Lord and General. I'm glad he isn't like me though, being so high ranked in an large army, you need a hard head, not to be blessed with the spotlight of pink and intimate lighting.

My mother was a stern woman, if you had done something wrong, disobeyed her rules, basically anything she didn't like, you would be punished. She would spank you in front of a cross with Jesus Christ on it as you begged for his forgiveness and if you didn't beg good enough, she would leave bloody marks.

But that was only the part where you misbehaved, my mother loves us but she can lose her temper quickly which is why I'm thankful for my youngest sister, Greta.

Because of Greta's young age she is very impressionable, she is the apple of my mothers eye, she calms her down and convinces her to at least ease on the force of her punishment.

My grandfather, Bernhard, is one of the bravest men I have ever met. He was like my father, a general, it runs in our blood to be leaders of great army's, to make our mark in history. The reason why he is the bravest men I have ever met is because when he was young, on his 46th name day, he and my grandmother found out that he was sick, really sick. They advised him not to battle, to let someone else to take over. But my grandfather is too prideful for that, he would rather die and meet our saviour and creator early than sit by, not serve his country and die as a weak frail man.

He was told he wouldn't last to see his 48th name day but that was thirty two years ago and he is still holding on yet his health is rapidly declining, I fear he might go soon.

My older siblings are Valda, Stefan and Elsa. Valda and Stefan are twins, always arguing but always sharing secrets. Even though Stefan is a man and Valda is a woman, most the time it's like they've switched roles. Stefan is the brains and Valda is the brawn.

Elsa is a woman grown, the oldest. Many whisper about her and call her crazy, yet she is not. Elsa and her late husband where head in heels in love, getting married at a young age, Elsa being only 20 and her sweetheart being 22, sadly three years later, only 7 months ago, he got killed in battle, defending his fallen brethren against the pagans.

My family isn't the most perfect but we get by. We carry on our bloodline and make centuries of our ancestors proud, 'Es lebe Haus Godfrey, es lebe unsere Krieger, es lebe Deutschland'. [long live house Godfrey, long live our warriors, long live Germany.]

Miguel O' Hara - AU Scientist (Across the Spider-Verse) - Chapter 5

Miguel would forever be a sweetheart. You could stare at him all day. 

Literally. 

That’s what you were doing.

Just staring at him.

He always wears this cute expression on his face when he’s deep in his work.

However, the question at the back of your head kept nagging you.

Why?

If Miguel is so perfect, why did you continue to hide your secret?

Fear.

Mistrust.

You couldn’t really say what it was.

“Are you alright?”

You finally lift your head and he’s right there in front of you. That little worried crease deep in his brow.

“I’m fine, just a little tired I guess.”

He nods, leaving a light kiss on your cheek.

“We have been working non stop. I can’t say for sure if this technology will actually work. The science is flawless, but it seems a bit unrealistic to jump through alternate realities. Even for Mr. Jamieson this is a leap.”

You’d like to say you agree with him. Jumping through spaces in time and reality is a far-fetched dream, but you know otherwise.

If you were being quite honest you hoped that it would take them another century or so to even propose the idea.

Reality truly is harsh.

“There’s not much more we can do at the moment. The batteries need at least a week to fully charge to accommodate the energy charge that we’ll need. We should turn in for the night.”

“Count me in.”

You move out of the chair, stretching your limbs.

Miguel watches you with interest, and when you catch the stare, you blush.

“What?”

“It’s nothing. You’re just cute.”

What you’ve learned about Miguel is that he’s very honest. He says what’s on his mind. It’s always had a way of throwing you off. His compliments are too much for your heart.

“T-Thank you..”

Boy, he had you wrapped around his finger.

“Would you like to stay over tonight?”

You nod very eagerly.

“I’d like that.”

He smiles, holding out his hand for you to take. It’s a simple gesture, yet you’ve never taken it for granted. But this isn’t just a slight touch. It’s an invitation into his life. The familiar pang of guilt hits you, and you hesitate just for a moment.

Then you will yourself to press forward.

The air is a bit heavy.

For the majority of the night you manage to school your features in what seems like a convincing smile. Laying in bed, your eyes are directed at the ceiling. Your gaze moves to Miguel’s sleeping form. He looks so cute, even in sleep. Smiling to yourself, you rise, heading for the kitchen.

It’s hard pretending everything is alright, but what else can you do?

With a sigh, you intend to reach into the fridge and grab a drink, but there is a shift in the air. You flinch, eyes widening at the very visible multicolored portal that has opened right behind you. Your fist clench defensively, watching the suited figure walk through casually. You let out one uneven breath, ready for anything.

This is what you’d been afraid of.

“The fact that you haven’t run off yet must mean that I have the right person.”

That voice…

His mask depixelated right in front of your eyes. That darkened gaze is not what you expect. His stature, that hair, you know it all too well.

“Miguel..”

He looks a bit put off by your expression. His head tilts to the left.

“I’m not who you might know on this earth. My name is Miguel O’ Hara. I'm Spiderman from Earth 2099.

It looks like it has all finally caught up to you.

“I’m here to-”

“I’m not interested.” Your immediate response isn’t what he expects.

“This is a serious matter.”

“I know all about your anomalies and little justice society.”

He’s shocked.

“You really think you’re the first. There’s so much that you don’t understand. You think that this is some noble cause but you’re wrong. We’re heroes, not gods. I’m not interested in your war. So leave.”

“You realize that humanity depends on us keeping all the realities safe. If you don’t help, are you ready to live with the consequences of your actions?”

“That’s rich coming from you.”

The statement has caught him by surprise. Miguel takes a step back, and when he sees the gold light flicker around your irises, he briefly contemplates his choice in coming here.

“Who..are you?”

He’s never been this unprepared. He knew just about every spider-person. That’s why when Lyla told him of the new variant, he was skeptical. He couldn’t find any information of a hero on this earth, yet he detected patterns that were basically textbook for anyone with spider enhanced abilities.

“Leave.”

There’s nothing but malice in your voice.

Miguel wants to know more, to understand how you know so much yet refuse to assist.

“I’ll be back, you can count on it.”

He doesn’t say anything else, just clicks his watch, his mask materializing once more as he steps back into the portal. It finally dissipates right before your eyes and you bite down on your lip.

“(Y/N)..”

The voice startles you, and you turn. Miguel is standing right there and from the look on his face, he’d been there for a while.

At that very moment, your heart sinks.

“I screwed up..”

There’s nowhere to run now.

I don't HATE ATSV for what they did with Miguel, honestly and tbh considering of how much Miguel's personality is "fluctuating" inbetween runs which means there's not really a sturdy base to work with... most of the choices they went with with him I can get behind pretty well, HOWEVER, it stops at him "restraining himself from snapping the arm of a 15 year-old" who wants to save his dad

I'm new to Marvel comics as a whole, read -most- of Miguel's runs myself just a few months ago (y'know silly brain-worms had to get the maximum amount of serotonin possible) but this version of Miguel O'Hara is just starting to feel really really wrong. It just feels so off, especially considering he's a shocking FATHER. Beating up Miles AND sending Gwen back to her universe, back to her father that Miguel last saw pointing a gun at his daughter just seems so- y'know.

To me, at least, what made Miguel interesting for a big part is his moral compass. Always trying to save everybody, heck, even the villains. His constant struggle to make everything work, his viewpoint and understanding of the world. Only few things were kept consistent throughout all the different runs but his moral compass stayed (not talking about Secret Wars 2099 Miguel, he should go to jail for his fashion sense alone lol) but that just feels erased. Similar to his struggle to break free of Alchemax and their control, Miguel creating his own organization which *enforces* control just seems wild to me. I guess it plays into the "becoming what you swore to destroy" trope but here it just feels wrong.

Yeah lol, I just hope they manage to redeem him properly in Beyond but until then I'll just make up for the damage they did with this sacred power otherwise known as headcanoning byeeeee🏃‍♂️

Hey, it's me again! Bc I loved how insightful your posts about Olek and Ling Yi were, showing you clearly think deeply about the show, I would like to ask you something outside the couple, if that is okay! So, I was rewatching Ep 3 (I have a severe case of brainrot for the two lovebirds) and something that Eyk said about the ships messed me up. He said the company bought 3 German ships. We have Kerberos and Prometheus, but who do you think is the third? I almost lost it. Could it be important?

i don’t know if the third ship itself is important, but the fact that there are three ships is important, and that importance is twofold: first, it continues the show’s central theme around triangles, and second, the ships themselves serve as a clever bit of foreshadowing for the plot.

triangles are obviously a huge part of the show, both literally and metaphorically. you have the ship company’s logo being the triangle with the line through it (the alchemical symbol for earth) and that symbol is repeated throughout the show in the set and costume design. we see the symbol tattooed behind elliot’s ear, and later on in the “present,” we see it tattooed on maura as well.

the characters are also grouped into sets of three, but never equally. there is an imbalance in each trio, and while that is certainly just a fact of human relationships, given the context of this show, i think it’s an intriguing detail we can’t overlook. maura’s first family unit is with henry and ciaran and her father prefers her to her brother. her second family unit is with daniel and elliot - she doesn’t remember either of them and the two of them are working together to change the simulation, and henry later tells elliot that daniel will always pick maura over him. maura has a love triangle with daniel and eyk and while she is married to daniel, she arguably has a stronger connection with eyk. speaking of the captain, he has three daughters but nina is clearly his favorite as she’s the only one he calls out to by name over and over again. clemence is married to lucien but has an instant connection to jerome and jerome and lucien have a shared history and secret from the war. krester, tove, and ada are siblings with krester and tove being much closer in age to each other than they are to ada. ramiro and angel are lovers but angel is tempted by krester. ling yi and yuk je are both employed by and at the mercy of virginia wilson. i could keep going but i won’t, and i should mention that of all the main characters, olek is the only one who doesn’t have this dynamic. he does have a brief scene with the two stokers, but that’s really it. instead, he has two strong duos - his partnership with jerome and his relationship with ling yi. this may or may not be significant, but when you take a step back and see all the other trios happening on the ship, olek’s lack of one really sticks out even more.

there’s also the fact that more or less everything significant to the plot is presented in a set of three. the three items that can alter the simulation - the pyramid, the remote control, and the lockpicking bug (alfred, you’re doing amazing sweetie). the three distinct time periods - 1899, the 70s/80s look of henry’s office, elliot’s bunker, the soundtrack, etc., and 2099. the three times we see the words “wake up” - on the memorial cross, on the stone pyramid, and on the toy pyramid. and of course, the fleet of three ships that started it all.

which brings me to my second point - the ships and their names directly tie into the events of the first season. prometheus is a titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind, giving them knowledge and technology, and it’s only after discovering the prometheus that maura and eyk gain the knowledge that there is something deeply wrong about both ships and their entire reality. kerberos is a computer protocol that provides authentication and allows a server and user to identify each other and it was named after cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld. many of the passengers on the kerberos are hiding their own and discovering each other’s true identities, and in the last episode, the remaining survivors end up in an afterlife of sorts in the graveyard with all the other failed simulations. i love little details like this when you reach the end of a story and then realize all the breadcrumbs the creators left starting from the beginning. and fun fact, in episode 1, we learn that the prometheus had 1,423 passengers, and in episode 2, we learn that the kerberos has 1,612. which means the kerberos has an additional 189 passengers. i know we’re missing a whole digit, but come on, what a great detail!

i’ll end with this - cerberus’s three heads are said to represent the past, present, and future. you have prometheus as the past, kerberos as the present, and the unnamed third ship as the future. but is that a happy future where everyone is free of the simulation or is that future simply a return to the beginning of the loop as the cycle begins anew? despite ciaran welcoming maura to “reality” in 2099, the fact that they are once again on a vessel named prometheus also with 1,423 passengers should at least make us consider the possibility that they have simply traded environments, swapping a steamship for a spaceship. so perhaps we end at the beginning where the future is the past. after all, a triangle can always fit a circle inside it and vice versa.
