im not a minimalist by any standard but i have to deep clean and remove items from my space like every 6 months bc you never realize how easy it is to accumulate bullshit you don't need (and that then sits and expires or takes up unnecessary space) until you're older and realize how much you don't even have sentimental attachments to most of it, but that the people around you might guilt you into keeping bc it was a gift/from family/antique/new like!! if u never use it, never see it, and don't have the space get rid of it bestie...

just got home from a local arts festival and this is what I've noticed
mediocre contemporary line drawing: $700
actually incredible oil painting of the same size by someone with a fine arts degree: $280
it's totally fine for the first person to price their art at $700 if that's what people will pay for it. but what's not okay imo is for the second piece--requiring far more time and objective skill--to be priced at less.

I am hoping to get into one of our local Christmas craft/artisans fair this year with my books. After the book festival I did in August, I know for sure some things I can do to make my table more visually appealing to draw prospective customers in (nicer tablecloth, decent-sized poster advertising my books, more bookmarks to give away for free, fairy lights to go around the table), but I would also like a few more decorative elements to have on the table itself. Even a couple of vases with flowers in them would be something, but I would really like something that would reflect the 1920s/1930s flavor of my books (I'll be selling both the Whitney & Davies series and Pauline Gray Investigates). I did some fun pieces of Art Deco costume jewelry at the book festival, but they were really too small to grab people's attention and stand out. I've asked my daughter about crocheting little mini-figures of Len and Maia (and I guess Pauline as well, though I admit I wasn't thinking of her when I talked it over with Joy), and while those would be cute I'm also not sure how well they would fit the sophistication level of the books--these aren't cute, cozy tales, as crocheted dolls might suggest. They are warm and gentle, yes, but not cute and cozy, and not particularly whimsical. Any suggestions?

@box-of-characters asked: lillias: *puts chin in hands* tell me about the ghost amulet
Tumblr media
' --- necklace , actually . ' though , calling it an amulet at first sure did work in grabbing this guy's attention , didn't it ? ' used to be cursed . whoever put it on could never take it off , had a ghost attached to it , only someone else breaking the necklace could free its wearer , yada-yada ... '
bizarre yet utterly typical , if only in the way that he masks it . the great phantom thief coolly lounging against the other's counter wasn't about to start telling reciting every line of the tragic love story behind the broken treasure when such a thing was close to even his heart .
' i'll tell you the rest , free of charge --- but only if you buy the necklace . it's fine , put it out front . there's hardly enough magic left in it anymore to cause any trouble , and it makes for a nice antique . sell it off for double to someone looking for a nice gift . '
after all , didn't it deserve another tale of true love and happiness , too ? polished and evidently expertly-maintained beyond its phenomenal make , there was sure to be someone who still thought the aging masterpiece and its agate centerpiece beautiful and more than worthy of becoming a gift , no matter the old wound of a shattered decorative wing .

When will you share that rant about Claire's and piercings? I am very invested
Tumblr media
The Long Version
The Short(...er) Version:
Disclaimer: Most of my gripes apply to pretty much any shopping-mall piercing kiosk. Claire’s is not the ONLY place I have an issue with, they’re just the best known.
1. There are two main piercing methods: a hollow needle, or a piercing gun. Piercing guns are objectively in every way worse than a needle. But Claire’s, which uses the gun, markets it as “No Contact! 😃” and “Needle Free! 🥰” while failing to mention that also means it is a “Higher Infection Risk! 😉” and “More painful! 😇”
2. It’s okay to use cheap low-grade jewelry in a piercing that is already healed. But using low-grade metal in a fresh piercing increases your risk of healing and health problems (and can even put you at risk of developing metal allergies that will last the rest of your life!). Claire’s sells both cheap and high-grade metal, but fails to properly counsel customers on what metals are appropriate for a first piercing, and ultimately lets you pick whatever you’re willing to pay for.
3. Claire’s employees are not professional piercers. They are retail workers with basic piercing training. Trusting them to give you good piercing advice and sell you appropriate products is like trusting a pet supply store cashier to give you good animal care advice and appropriate products. There are always better people to go to, and they might be more expensive, but ultimately, you are getting exactly what you pay for. Make your own choices, at your own risk.
4. General gripe about piercing culture: there are mothers out there who are so obsessed with enforcing gender roles that they will get their infant baby girl’s ears pierced. Piercings are a type of body modification and you should not be forcing that upon someone without their consent. Let your kid grow up and choose to have a piercing. It’s exciting to go out and get pierced! Why rob your child of that fun experience?
Piercings also are an open wound which needs special care, which babies do not comprehend, leaving them at high risk of accidental infection and even permanent scarring and disfiguration in some cases. A lot of professional piercers have age restrictions for this very reason. But Claire’s (among others, whom I take issue with) will gladly pierce your infant’s ears.
Having metal allergies is relatively common. Interestingly, the percentage of the population with metal allergies is noticeably skewed towards women. Gee.... perhaps it might be related to so many women getting cheap piercings in order to fulfill gender expectations.
