exploring power fantasy
if we die, where do you want to go? heaven? nirvana? valhalla? that really good taco shop with the brisket and the cashier who doesn't care that you asked for French fries in the burrito instead of the normal fried potato's you have? (its a texture thing you say as i project my burrito preferences onto you)
some may wish to go to another world. that's right you rancid fucking shittertinkers! were gonna talk about the usage of power fantasy within the isekai genra and its possible literature usages, and wither or not there are actually some good versions of the genre.
first lets establish a baseline into what a power fantasy is. power fantasy media is a version of wish fulfillment or escapism in which the character (usually a blank slate in which us the reader can be within) displays an improbable amount of dominance within the story.
the most common one that we can find is thus: black haired skinny dude dies, usually after being hit by a truck or from some form of stress. they then get sent to a new realm, normally something euro fantasy based with all the castles, dragons and wizards and such.
said character will meet the king, they find out that the gods above or whatever entity that be has decided to grant them a seemingly useless skill, lets say piss laser x. the ability to piss at overwhelming velocity. then they find out that not only does this skill allow them to fire an actual dick laser that also bypasses defenses of enemies, they can force other entities to piss at high velocity, thus stunning them and allowing the character to beat the shit out of them.
or in less obtuse terms, a character is given a skill that is objectively strong and overpowered and from that point onwards, their sole task is to live in that world and do whatever they want regardless of any plot or threat that may attempt to effect them.
is this kind of story telling inherently bad? maybe! can it be fun to read if you don't give a shit? yes! is it annoying if it gets way to popular and suddenly a powerscaler decides they want to take permanent residence up your ass about who or what they can beat?
YES
anyways you have more likely then not came across something like this in media given its astoundingly easy to use and also a very populer story format when used in parodies. ill flog myself for bring this up later but consider the show rick and morty. dispite rick not being a blank slate, we can easily call his method of plot progression akin to power fantasy.
but in that comes the variations. where as something like overlord will use the overpowered status of the character to only explore how the character interacts with the outside world, with their powers being nothing more then a method to shape the world and give us scenes of utter carnage brought to us by the sick twisted minds of middle aged Japanese businessmen.
we can see some budding attempt to fuck around with the idea of power fantasy in rick and morty. cool, rick can do anything and everything. what does he do? which immediatly opens it up because if no one can face you, your greatest foe becomes yourself. again, i say its budding given that the show is to scared to give rick a challange in anything other then name alone and even other ricks rarely serve any form of challange. again though, its the attempt that fascinates.
now lets not get it twisted, you dont need to have powers to have a power fantasy. you can also gain it from the idea of going backwards in time with the knowladge of the present. EX: https://mangadex.org/title/a4304d3b-191d-471f-8c78-353d403a35d0/sengoku-komachi-kuroutan-noukou-giga
the manga presents the idea of a school girl with a pencent for craft and war going back in time and joining oda nobunagas army and upgrading it with modern weaponry like compound bows and such. i consider this power fantasy given its creating a character with the ability to rewrite history because they were born with a certain knowledge in a world that lacks it, meaning that while they are easily killed, they are still the most valuable person within that time.
the usage of the story trope is normally to allow an author to explore the full extent of a power idea or to truly lambaste a certain troupe that the author may not like.
for example, the cancelled manga hero killing and a new manga called Cheat Eater are about overpowered main characters going around killing overpowered main characters. don't like a character? toss them in an let your op mc grind through them! don't like magical girls? make them a bunch of evil douchebags and let your overpoward mc kill em!
its mainly a trope of dismissal, as in you are creating a character mainly to dismiss, ignore or actively dislike something.

So I found this manga/light novel where a girl from the modern era is transported to Sengoku era and finds herself working under Nobunaga.
But. Y’know. Without the romance and hot guys. Just with agriculture and modern technology. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ She doesn’t even live in Azuchi castle, poor lass. It’s called Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan! I recommend it if you’re interested in those historical and timeslip stuff haha.

Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan 1 Review
Tumblr media
Author: Kyouchikutou
Illustrator: Geko Hirasawa
Label: Earth Star Novel
Release Date: 15 January 2016
Unfortunately, I didn’t really like this volume. I just found it really inaccessible due to emphasis on agriculture and the Sengoku Era, both of which are topics that I really don’t know much about. I found the story hard to really get into due to that but I think that someone who has an interest in those two subjects will enjoy this.
Story:
Genre: Agriculture, Historical, Time Travel
Shizuko is the student of an agricultural school who has an interest in history. One day, she discovers that she’s somehow time traveled back to the Sengoku Era. She meets Oda Nobunaga who threatens to kill her unless she can prove her worth. She discovers that she can do this by aiding Nobunaga with ker knowledge of agriculture. With no way of knowing how to get back home, she does the only thing she can do: survive.
I found this volume to be very inaccessible, as someone who has a limited knowledge of agriculture and Japanese history (most of what I know about the Sengoku Era is from anime like Oda Nobuna no Yabou and most of what I know about agriculture is from Gin no Saji). But I acknowledge that it’s unlikely that the author ever thought that this novel would be read by someone outside of Japan so I don’t think that it can really be helped. I just found it really hard to get into.
The other thing worth mentioning is that the story has yet to confirm whether Shizuku's actions will influence history or not. She doesn't seem concerned about that possibility but she sure is introducing a lot of technology ahead of their time. Peaking ahead at the volume covers, it does seem like the later volumes will introduce a warfare element as well. Whether it’ll be handled well or not, I can’t say but I think it’s worth a mention.
All that said, I can see that this might have been more interesting had I had more interest and knowledge on the subjects. It goes into quite a bit of detail in describing the agriculture side of things and I can see how that could be interesting. It’s not for me but I can see certain people liking it.
Character:
Shizuku’s an okay protagonist. She didn’t make a strong impression on me but she’s got a strong will and is quite clever. She does feel a bit too clever and OP at times which causes her to not be very relatable to the reader but I didn’t hate her. The rest of the characters were mostly unmemorable but I did like the wolves.
Adapatation Notes:
The manga is illustrated by Hajime Sawada and is ongoing with four volumes currently released. I found the manga to be more accessible than the light novel but it still has issue where it's hard to really get into it unless the reader is interested in the subjects. There are a couple of changes here and there which I think helped the story flow more smoothly but I still found it really hard to get interested in. At the moment, I would recommend the manga over the light novel.
Recommended for:
People who have an interest in agriculture and Japanese history (especially those with an interest in the Sengoku Era).
I won’t be getting volume 2 any time soon but there is a chance that I may reread this volume once I’ve learned more Japanese and more about Japanese history. For now, I have no plans to continue with the series.
Next up is Okitsune-sama no Iruikonintan

MANGA REC LIST
I’ve been meaning to update this for a while, and I finally got around to it!
if you’re looking for some new manga to read, here’s my rec list below:
----
These are all varying levels of good- some are AMAZING and some are just a fun read.
For the most part I tried not to include REALLY popular series (like yeah: One Punch Man and Detective Conan and One Piece and whatever are good! but also you’ve probably already read them!)
Also, the categories are just for the sake of organization- take them with a grain of salt. Most of the series are comedy, even those not in the comedy section.
Bonus: here’s a post with more detailed descriptions for 10 of these series, including an example page from each.
and you can also check my manga recs tag I guess

If you like isekai or reincarnation manga, I have some recommendations for you. I will only list ones that aren't harem (that I remember). Those get boring after a while, but I still read them.
Mahoutsukai no Konyakusha.
This Girl is a Little Wild.
Soushikikan to Watashi no Jijou.
A Witch's Printing Office.
For certain reasons, the villainess Noble Lady Will Live Her Post-Engagement Annulment Life Freely.
Fiancee be Chosen by the ring.
The Duchess of the Attic.
Survive as the Hero's Wife.
From Maid to Mother.
Tensei Kenja no Isekai Raifu ~Daini no Shokugyo wo Ete, Sekai Saikyou ni Narimashita~
A Mild Noble's Vacation Suggestion. (I'm crying because I wish it was romance, but we can't have everything in life and that sucks 😢 )
I am Troubled That my Fiance Is a Villain.
I was told to relinquish my fiance to my little sister, and the great dragon took a liking to me and unbelievably took over the kingdom.
God Bless You.
Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan: Noukou Giga.
Fiancée's Observation log of the Self-proclaimed Villainess.
Seduce the Villain's Father.
Living As the Tyrant's Older Sister.
Beware The Villainess!
The Stereotypical Life of a Reincarnated Lady.
I became the villain's mother.
Cheating men must die.
The Villain's Savior.
I became the hero's mom.
The Savior's book cafe in another world.
Trash of the Count's Family. (I'm crying over this one too, bruh give him love 😭)
The Villainess Lives Twice.
I took the male leads first time.
I began a new game.
( i will not list any more, the list is too long)
Some of them, I haven't gotten far but they don't seem like it's harem. I wish there were more stories where the mc would out right deny or make clear their feelings. It pains me with all the girl girl girl girl girl or boy boy boy boy boy can't it have a small set of characters that don't have to fall in love? Loving someone and being in love are two different things after all.

Is Kagome is going to ask for help studying in exchange for soap and phone charges? I think I remember Kagome having trouble studying. Though that does raise the question of how Coco and Kagome will do that unless Kagome is somehow fluent in one of the languages Coco knows. I am curious to see if Coco's Bachelor's degree in Chemistry becomes relevant at some point, like maybe having to make her own soap or something.
Soap is a lot more difficult to make if you don’t have any lye around, and even with that, you need protection from it. But only in certain settings. If anything, Coco has a better chance with looking for soapberries, as those are a thing in Japan. (in the meantime, at least, should she ever decide to go through with making soap)
Soapberries are exactly what they sound like - little berries that have properties like soap. Found out about them through a manga called  Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan: Noukou Giga, where a girl from modern day Japan gets thrown into the Sengoku Era and pretty much has to make stuff for Nobunaga. It’s a very nice read if you wanna get into some agriculture and whatnot. :D
THAT SAID, the only reason Coco is a chemistry major is because I’m a chemistry major. :V
Sorry if that sounded like it would amount to anything, the best thing you can expect is some shenanigans here and there, because if there’s one thing Coco is up to, it’s experimenting.
Beyond that, Coco is really good at English and math (once you enter the world of chemistry, you’re stuck using math forever)
Coco might have an easier time talking to Kagome, versus someone like Sesshoumaru, because of the difference in dialect. But also, Kagome might be more willing to accommodate her.
In any case, Kagome should have an easier time with studying, even if it does come at the cost of dealing whatever wonky language barrier is between her and Coco. So it all works out anyways ^^

Manga Recommandation
Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan: Noukou Giga
Tumblr media
Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan: Noukou Giga is among one of my favourite manga in the time travel genra. The only problem i have with this manga is that it have slow updates ༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ. Its so good that it pains me to wait over a month just to get a new chapter then was left to rot with a cliffhanger. Im also sad because the series light novel have just ended (12 Vol I think) but i cant read it because there is no english version of it so a Bish is sad ಥ_ಥ.
But the manga itself is a very well written and i enjoy reading it very much. The MC is very relatable and it really hurts my stomach to read it because the manga is quite funny i have to say. I also learn quite a bit about agriculture from the manga. 11/10 I would recommand to read this manga.
This manga is avalable to be read at Mangadex
Here’s the manga sypnosis
One fateful day, a girl time slipped into the Sengoku Era. It was an abrupt enough event to be dubbed god’s whim, done to sate hellish boredom. The girl has no power to change the world. She was a very ordinary, common, and plain girl that can be found anywhere. And that girl can do no more than a single thing. Survive the Sengoku Era ——– that’s all.

Onna dakara, to Party wo Tsuihou Sareta node Densetsu no Majo to Saikyou Tag wo Kumimashita 1 Review
Tumblr media
Author: Ameko Kaeruda
Illustrator: Kazutomo Miya
Label: Overlap Novels
Release Date: 25 February 2019
Ahhhhh, I love this. It hits all of my preferences in fiction while also being the most blatantly feminist and yuri and light novel I’ve ever read. It’s also really hilarious with some great characters. I’m very excited to read volume 2!
English Release:
J-Novel Club is currently releasing this series in English as Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked me out, so I Teamed up with a Mythical Sorceress! The first volume will be released digitally in October so please pick it up if the series interests you.
Story:
Genre: RPG-like world, Action, Adventure, Comedy, Yuri - f/f romance
When the Sorceress Tanya is cast out of her party due to “being a woman”, she is furious. To let off some steam, she goes to the wasteland to blow some stuff up. There she meets Laplace, a mythical witch who has been sealed off for the past 300 years who was freed when one of Tanya’s Explosion spells accidentally hit her. Tanya decides to team up with Laplace to get revenge on her former party.
The novels biggest weakness is that the plot isn’t very intense or interesting. It’s funny but it’s not a page-turner. I didn’t really mind this (especially after how addictive Danmachi was) but I know that this is something that will bother a lot of people. The other issue is that the fights just aren’t very exciting. The characters are OP enough that most of the fights don’t last very long. There was one fight that I liked but they’re pretty dull for the most part. Again, I didn’t really mind this but it’s definitely an issue that the volume has.
I laughed a lot when reading this. It’s hilarious and it was really fun to see the author question certain characteristics of both RPG worlds and the real world and give them a feminist spin. I also want to mention the volume contains plenty of references to real life events. Specifically, the scandal with a medical university in Tokyo altering the scores of entrants in order to limit the amount of female students is referred to (the best article I can find on this at the moment is here).
This is also the most gay light novel I’ve ever read. It’s blatantly yuri with the main characters sharing a few kisses and Tanya often thinks about how good Laplace smells. Laplace and Tanya are very cute and they have a really interesting relationship. Along with those two, there’s another f/f pair that is hinted at but isn’t as blatant.
Character:
The characters are really interesting and funny! In particular, Laplace made me laugh more times than I can count. She’s a really charming character and her relationship with Tanya is interesting and wholesome. The other major character is Nadine, a level 3 healer, who ended up becoming a really interesting character by the end of the volume.
Recommended for:
People who don’t care too much about plot and just want to read a feminist light novel about girls kicking ass and fans of yuri. Also, if you enjoy rpgs and have gotten frustrated over several of their aspects before (such as bikini armor and healers often being female), you should enjoy this. This also one of the easier light novels I’ve read in Japanese so it may be good for people who are starting to learn the language. There are a couple of fantasy and game terms that may trip a reader up but it’s mostly straight forward.
I’ll probably get the second volume within the next few days. Next up, I’m going to read the first volume of Sengoku Komachi Kuroutan
