What if dodos are just as bad at making nests as pigeons?
In fact, dodos are classified in the pigeon family. Their closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon.

"Reel Around the Sky" and "Reel Around the Sun". I've had dromaeosaurs and ancient life on the brain something FIERCE lately. Coloration and patterning partially inspired by local hawks and the Carolina Wren.

And here the result of the Patrick Burn Formation #paleostream! This has been our first adventure into the Silurian, a short but important period for eurypterids and our own ancestors. The PB Formation from Scotland preserves a brackish fauna with such elements.
Tumblr media
While the eurypterids clearly are the most spectacular animals here the most common are the phyllocarid crustaceans in the form of Ceratiocaris. However another organism from here is also very common and was thought to be a crustacean for a while as well...

But Dictyocaris, preserved in large, irregular flakes turned out to be most likely a plant, interpreted here similar to floating liverworts. As one of the larger and most common organisms one can imagine this being an important part of the ecosystem. In fact the jawless fish...

Jamoytius has been proposed to be feeding on photosyntetic sheets. With an anoxic bottom this made it easy to place the whole composition close the water surface but a few animals remain in Discord member Mudturtle's size chart that didn't make it in.

Oh my gosh! She’s bald and she’s torturing people who have hair!
…Anyways! I absolutely bullshit the feathers and barely looked at references when i probably should have so don’t look too closely. I don’t really know where I was going with this. Kinda supposed to be a juxtaposition between the perception of pop culture raptors vs scientifically accurate dromeosaurs

Corocrinus calypso
alt: i wanted to go more colorful with this crinoid (an echinoderm with radial arms jutying out of a central cup atop a stalk, like a sea flower with feathery tentacles), here depicted with bands of blue and yellow for the arm and stalks, with red pinnules, the feather bits on the arms. most crinoids today live in the deep sea, but corocrinus and many others in the paleozoic lived in shallow water. Corocrinus seems to have this beautiful triangle/hexagon grid skeleton thingy on its cup instead of the usual hexagon plates
