50 Things to Know About Tara Lewis
Tumblr media
I have, on multiple occasions, held myself out to be the resident Tara Lewis expert and have spent many, many hours obsessing over her, so I figured I would put together this handy little guide to our favorite forensic psychologist!
Things About Tara Lewis That Are Canonically True
She was (presumably) born in 1973.
She was named after her paternal great-grandmother.
Her middle name is Elizabeth.
She has a brother named Gabriel who is three years younger.
Her father's name is Albert.
She has an aunt named Thelma who may or may not be the same aunt who mended all her clothes growing up.
She was a tomboy.
She loved fossils when she was a kid.
Her father was in the military, and her family moved around a lot while she was growing up. Places they lived include Hamburg, Germany; Okinawa, Japan; and Fort Rucker army base in Alabama.
Her brother began calling her "T" after a boy at school teased her about her name. Gabriel is the only one who uses this nickname for her.
Her father opened an auto body repair shop in D.C. after being discharged from the military, and he taught Tara how to restore antique cars.
She is fluent in both German and French.
She was brought up Christian.
Her mother died of breast cancer when she was 18.
She attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees.
She has a complicated relationship with her younger brother, and at one point, they were estranged from each other after she bailed him out when he found himself in financial (and possibly legal) trouble.
She was previously married to Daryl Wright, but they divorced as a result of his issues with drug addiction which led him to become abusive towards her.
She and Daryl met at Dartmouth and married young, while they were still in graduate school.
She was engaged to Doug Fuller, but he broke off their engagement after becoming frustrated with Tara's work hours at the BAU.
Before joining the BAU, she worked out of the San Francisco field office.
She counseled parents in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting.
Serial killers she has interviewed include Loren Herzog and Archie Sutton.
She listens to classic rock and enjoys Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and The Doors.
She drives a 1970 Opel GT which she spent five years restoring.
Her drink of choice appears to be whiskey.
She is an excellent shot and scored 100 on her firearms qualification.
She wears reading glasses.
She watches Doctor Who.
She doesn't believe in ghosts.
She has given a TED Talk.
Things About Tara Lewis That I Made up Because the Writers Neglected Her
Her birthday is April 22, 1973.
She was born in Fort Meade, Maryland.
Her mother's name was Evelyn.
Her parents were high school sweethearts, and they both grew up in and have deep family ties to Prince George's County, Maryland (the part of Maryland that borders D.C. to the east and contains several of the wealthiest majority-Black communities in the United States).
When she was a little girl, her father's pet name for her was "my little ladybug," and he still calls her that occasionally even though she's in her forties now.
She bears a striking physical resemblance to her mother, who was also a very tall lady, but not quite as tall as Tara.
She's played the piano since she was four years old.
She was on the track team in high school and broke her school's record for the Girls' 800m.
While at Dartmouth, she spent a semester abroad in Geneva, which is where she perfected her French.
She loves dogs, but she's never been able to have one of her own: first because her family moved around so much, then because she was a broke, busy university student, and now because of the long hours and constant travel that comes with her job.
Her favorite color is green.
She loves WNBA basketball and is a diehard Washington Mystics fan.
She's a very good cook.
She met Daryl in the stacks of the library during her senior year of college. They were both looking for the same psychology book. He was immediately charming and sweet, and he let Tara check the book out instead of him, but only on the condition she give him her number so he could come borrow it if he really needed it. Of course, he found some reason to need the book before Tara was finished with it just so he could call her, and of course, when he did, they ended up talking for hours and forgetting about the book altogether. He took her back to the same spot in the library to propose to her.
She joined the FBI right after her divorce. They'd been trying to recruit her for a while, but after she and Daryl split up, she felt like she needed a fresh start and a change of scenery, so she left New Hampshire for Quantico.
She requested a transfer to the San Francisco field office in 2009 because Gabriel was living in San Francisco and having a rough time, and she felt obliged to go out there so she could keep an eye on him. After all, it was easier for her to transfer to a different FBI field office than it would be for her aging father to close up shop in D.C. and start a whole new business in California.
After she and Gabriel became estranged, she applied for the first available opening in the BAU so that she could move back east and be close to her father and the rest of her family again.
She lives in a 3-bedroom townhouse in Northern Virginia. It's a lot of space for just one person, but she found it and fell in love with it when she and Doug were house-hunting before he broke things off and went back to San Francisco, so she just went ahead and bought it for herself when she saw it was still on the market.
She enjoys spending her days off at her father's shop, working on cars with him.
She loves kids and is great with them, but she's never felt the need to have any of her own. She prefers being "Auntie Tara" to Henry, Michael, and the Simmons kids, and regularly offers to babysit when JJ and Will or Matt and Kristy need a night to themselves.

If you're still doing those hot take asks then all I want to say is that idk if it's common anymore but I hate it when people criticize Komaru for stupid stuff like the biggest crime of being a scared teen thrown into an apocalyptic situation and her being slightly out of touch and dumb after being locked up in a room for 2 years (the worst criticism I've ever seen was this one person who said that she never treated Toko with kindness as if she doesn't have an ungodly amount of patience the entire game, but this same person called tokomaru a "toxic friendship" soooo) tl;dr I will defend Komaru with my life she deserves better than to be stuck in udg
I think about Komaru all the time. She has a very special place in my heart, and unfortunately I think she's far and away one of the most often mischaracterized DR characters. And she gets a TON of disrespect for things that Makoto & Hajime don't get despite sharing the same traits, like people thinking she's "boring" or "doesn't have a personality outside being normal."
Personally, my big Komaru pet peeve is when people talk about Komaru as being a babysitter, or raising the Warriors of Hope after the game is over. I know it's coming from wish fulfillment on behalf of the warriors - that people want to see the abused kids get an adult who guides them back to the right path - but it's SO frustrating to see yet another female character stripped of her complexities and traumas and fears in order to be A Mother/Older Sister Figure. I HATE this trope. It makes it really obvious that they didn't actually pay attention to the character at all, because Komaru is VISCERALLY uncomfortable with the horrors they've committed and continues to struggle with the knowledge they are children vs her personal desire to get as far away from them as possible for the entire game. Komaru got dealt the absolute worst hand of any protagonist and instead of talking about the fascinating psychological effect of the "inhumane isolation for two years -> watched an entire society massacred in front of her including all of her saviors -> told to become prey in a murder game -> meets a serial killer" pipeline that she goes through in the space of like THREE HOURS?? people just want to talk about her in the context of other characters and the ways she can Help Them TM.
This got away from me. TLDR you're so right and I think Komaru should get to be on the verge of a mental breakdown, keeping herself together through the sheer force of thinking about her favorite manga! is she not valid! is she not relatable

Video Games for Mental Health - AI: The Somnium Files
Tumblr media
~Resist, allow your heart to take you! Never let this merciless world erase you! Passing down the light of the torch to guide you, And you shall be bathed in light!~
When it comes to reading visual material, one would usually think picture books. In the case of pop culture fans, there’s Western comic books and manga. But there’s a whole other medium that has gotten a lot of exposure since the start of the 2010s’ - visual novels. While there’s many notable VNs to discuss, I want to take a look at Team Zero Escape’s/Spike Chunsoft’s AI: The Somnium Files (AI is pronounced as “eye”) franchise due to its focus on finding connections and how messy the process can be.
This will largely be spoiler-free because discussing everything that happens in both games will take forever.
AI: The Somnium Files, created by Kotaro Uchikoshi (who’s most famous for creating the Zero Escape and Danganronpa series), is a murder mystery starring special detective Kaname Date and his AI partner, Aiba, who takes the form of Date’s left eye. The two have to find a serial killer, the New Cyclops Serial Killer, who’s plucking eyeballs off of people they murder. Date finds out one of the victims was a woman he knows and discovers that a young girl has the supposed murder weapon in her hands. Along the way, Date and Aiba meet a variety of people who help and/or hurt their investigation. To get to the truth, Date goes into people’s minds and dreams with the help of Aiba. There are a lot of twists as there are multiple routes and endings that all come together in one wild package.
There’s also a sequel that just came out in 2022 - AI: The Somnium Files -nirvanA Initiative-. The story takes place 6 years later after the 1st game. The premise goes as this - months after the events of the 1st game, the right half of a corpse was found. 6 years later, the left half of the same corpse was found with no decay at all. It’s up to 2 new protagonists, Mizuki (who is a major supporting character in the 1st game) and Ryuki Kuruto, alongside their own AI eyeball partners, to find the truth about the half body killings. While this is happening, something called the Nirvana Initiative is looking to cause trouble for the public.
I discovered the first game from a “top games of the 2010s’” podcast. It made number 11 on their list. So I decided to see what the podcast hosts experienced. AI1 was a emotional experience for me. There’s so much dialogue that will make you cry, laugh, cringe, angry, etc. Much like a point-and-click adventure game, you can interact with objects. Sometimes, you get some really great interactions with the cast of characters when you click on them. Those conversations feel like conversations one would have with friends in real life. Sure, some of them are dumb, but those kinds of moments make life bearable. The 2nd game continues that tradition too.
Speaking of the characters, it’s not just Date and Aiba who shine. There’s Mizuki, who’s technically the surrogate daughter of Date. They trade barbs with one another in comedic fashion. It’s cute to see because their relationship reminds me of Gintoki Sakata and Kagura in Gintama. In the first game, other notable characters include a teen idol, a NEET, a yakuza who worships idols, a crossdressing bar mama, and a female boss who throws out sexual innuendos. The second game introduces newer characters like a big chef wearing a mask to hide his disfigured face, a lovestruck former thief, and a mysterious masked female vigilante.
With many characters, the Somnium Files series does a great job at looking into the psychology and mental well-being of them. Whether it’s the dream sequences or regular interactions, one thing is for certain. What drives them, good or bad, is the people in their lives. That’s what I felt from these games. It’s about finding family in the strangest of places when all hope feels lost. These characters are driven to great lengths to gain attention from the ones they love.  And more importantly, don’t be afraid to open your eyes when it comes to conflict. There’s absolutely heavy portrayals of what happens when mental health goes awry due to inner/interpersonal conflict in both games. Dementia, brain tumors, family trauma, survivor’s guilt, and self-hatred are some of the mental health subjects discussed in this series.
Date is a really great hero. There’s a caveat about him though. He’s addicted to pornography/cabaret clubs and this is played to comedic effect. I found Date to be endearing otherwise due to things the player learns in the last few hours of the 1st game. Also, Mizuki is great. She’s the total opposite of Date as she’s a physical powerhouse. It’s nice to see Mizuki carry on the torch in the 2nd game as she’s arguably the most popular character in the series.
With great characters comes great voice acting. There’s amazing talent on the English side for both games. Greg Chun, Erika Harlacher, Corina Boettger, Jackie Lastra, Allegra Clark, Dorah Fine, Zach Aguilar, Kaiji Tang, Patrick Seitz, Stephen Fu, Anairis Quinones, SungWon Cho, Amanda Lee, Y. Chang, Laura Post just to name a bunch. All the VAs seemed to have a really fun time working on both games because they all brought their A-games into making all the conversations worth hearing over and over again.
I’ll end this post with one of my favorite dialogues in the series from Mizuki.
Tumblr media
Uchikoshi has gotten some attention for having progressive views as there’s a good amount of Japanese game developers who still think backwards about certain groups of people. There’s many people who think the Japanese are offended by most Western localization (ESPECIALLY with dialogue like this) and think Japanese people are all “non-political”, but I will say this - there’s Japanese people who do think about the feelings of minorities. It may not be many, but they’re there and outside of whatever internet bubbles fans are in.
And yes, humanity is rooted in weakness. I never told anyone that I was strong and I will gladly admit that I’m only still alive because I’ve had people who helped and supported me despite whatever differences we have.
So yeah, check out the AI: The Somnium Files franchise. It’s still very under the radar as the 1st game didn’t seem to sell a whole lot due to a lack of major marketing. Both games do have flaws, but this is a franchise made with a lot of love and deserves many eyeballs to reach the dream of being one of the most fascinating stories in a time where AI is gaining prominence in the real world and so much mental trauma is left unprocessed.
AI: The Somnium Files and its sequel, -nirvanA Initiative-, are out for the following systems (PC/Switch/PS4/Xbox One).

Research : Dating sims
Doki Doki Literature Club! :
a game me and josh played through together, its a dating sim turned psychological thriller, it isn't written amazingly but from a coding standpoint it got the gears turning on what I could and should do coding wise, when it comes to a typical visual novel in terms of displaying text, displaying characters and the scene's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cryptid Crush:
Tumblr media
came across it on itch.io, seems to fit the niche of mythical characters in a dating simulator, the UI is very pretty and thematic. Compared to Doki Doki it certainly allows a greater variety of interactions. a history feature is something that seems common within these titles, where you can access a transcript of everything that has been said recently. which could be something I can make.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do NOT Take This Cat Home :
Tumblr media
Another visual novel that isn't how is seems, surrounding the discovery of a stray black cat that leads to a series of undesirable events in the protagonists life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Multi choice options in the 2nd picture are something I can incorporate into the game to have branching choices. the artstyle is quite minimalist but cute.
I love my follower (count):
A stat building Visual novel where you are an eldritch god having to acclimatize to modern society to gain followers for your church. the stat building aspect gives me ideas for how to adapt and innovate upon the visual novel medium.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serial Lover :
A dating sim rhythm game, this is more adaptation on the visual novel genre, I definitely don't want to make another rhythm game after the last one, takes place with you trying to survive, and possibly win over a few serial killers. other than that it seems pretty basic outside of the rhythm game gimmick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saint Spell's Love Guide to the Magical Student's Spellbook :
a dating sim set in a magic school of some sort, with you being able to brew potions, practice spells, read books and more. Its yet again stat based, with the stats being useful on storylines and outcomes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm starting to warm to the idea of a stat system in my game with certain stats attracting certain characters or unlocking actions/ dialogue choices.
Purrgatory:
A Point and click visual novel about being trapped in purgatory where nothing really matters, and you encounter a bunch of whimsical characters, the art style being minimal is endearing
youtube
point and click is another method of doing a visual novel with more substance / gameplay.

Scary Movies to Watch on Halloween Night A Spine-Chilling Cinematic Journey
Embracing the Thrills of Halloween Cinema
Halloween, the night when the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest, is a time for spine-tingling adventures and hair-raising experiences. What better way to celebrate this eerie occasion than by indulging in a marathon of terrifying movies that send shivers down your spine? In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the realm of the macabre, exploring a curated selection of the most bone-chilling, heart-pounding, and psychologically thrilling movies that are bound to haunt your dreams and make your Halloween night truly unforgettable.
  1. Classic Horrors: Embracing the Timeless Fears
a. Psycho (1960): Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, “Psycho” is a cinematic masterpiece that redefined horror. With its iconic shower scene and unforgettable score, this film continues to terrify audiences decades after its release. Witness the psychological unraveling of Norman Bates and the birth of the slasher genre.
  https://idahomag.com/best-halloween-costume-ideas-2023/
  b. The Shining (1980): Based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by Stanley Kubrick, “The Shining” is a haunting tale of isolation and madness. Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Jack Torrance, a caretaker driven to insanity, is legendary. The eerie atmosphere, coupled with unsettling imagery, makes this film a Halloween must-watch.
  c. Rosemary’s Baby (1968): Directed by Roman Polanski, this film explores the sinister side of pregnancy and motherhood. Mia Farrow’s performance as Rosemary, a woman caught in a web of occult conspiracy, is chilling. With its slow-burning suspense and psychological horror, “Rosemary’s Baby” remains a classic in the genre.

im brainstorming a new character
ive been calling him Revenant in my head
ill put this under a read more coz i discuss fomulating his dead family backstory
and part of his character is that he's an orphan. but i'm not sure exactly how his family would have died. i know it's not a natural disaster, or a car accident, or a house fire, or a mass shooting/terrorist attack. i'm thinking that its a serial killer, a happenstance killing of his family by someone he's never met, my only issue is not traumatizing him too much because i uh. don't want to have to get in the weeds with child psychology as i am prone to research tangents.
my best concept is a camping trip, a way that I can have Rev wander off and not witness it, and i suppose i can imply that his parents are somewhat negligent in keeping an eye on their kid? however, a big part of the concept that formed Revenant was the idea of a dead sibling, and I want it to carry over to this new iteration. (i was abt to go on a tangent about how, especially in media, older siblings often take responsibility of their juniors when the parents do not. but i think i have a way to fix the issue in my next para)
so the other part is crows. i like mystical elements yknow so i think that the crows, or perhaps a higher being guiding them, lures Rev away from the incoming danger.
alright i gotta stop this post here on a cliff. i need to eat something and rest my eyes
