It's mid-August now, we were given some extra time to raise some money and whatnot, but we still dont have enough... My job didn't work out, I only went in one day and then nothing. Theres been very little money raised since the post in mid July and my friends and I are trying as hard as we can to raise enough.

🎈HAPPY 🎉 GOTCHA 🎁 DAY 🎂, BRATANIK! 🐢 🇷🇺 💚 I love scrolling through Instagram to see everyone's awesome lives, but I realize I rarely ever post my own, other than the occasional coloring page or pet's birthday... and today is no exception! Ha! 12 years ago this week, I adopted this little dude into my family and have never regretted it for a second. He had a rough start, due to the fact that his previous home kept him pretty terribly (wrong cage, wrong diet, etc) and then literally dropped him off in a shoebox outside Petco before it even opened on a chilly autumn morning, but after much due homework (already had my #turtle, Tortuga, but Bratanik was my first #tortoise) he proved to be a fighter (in the nicest sense of the word... He's tough, but also still has THE best temperament ever and is just a sweetheart to the many, many children he helped teach over the years.) but became and remains healthy, hardy... and just plain a-Dork-able! Since Brat was 40ish when I brought him home (and Russians are a pretty small species as Turtles and Tortoises go), I don't take as many "Oh look how fun he's grown!" type pics as I do with his cousin, Tortuga, so I just picked a fun Halloweenish one from back when we taught at #ThanksgivingPoint. It also just suits him, because feeding him his salads and watching him patiently "Nom Nom Nom" away under his sun lamp really does make me feel like I am raising a miniature dinosaur. He is such a good boy, and probably the only "baby" I will have that is older than me! So, yeah. Happy #GotchaDay, #MyShellBaby! Many (many MANY... Pose practice with my Shellby. Sometimes she wears red sometimes black. A girl likes a little variety.

Yes she does have 4 fingers on her right hand and 3 on her left. She’s a mutant after all, ooze isn’t perfect. This started as a joke because I accidentally gave her 4 fingers in some art after giving her the typical 3 turtle fingers. I figured I would just split the difference and she would get the ability to play the trumpet and flip people off. Huzzah.

And a peek at her yokai friend (in their cloaking brooch cat disguise) I still have not figured out a name for them even though their design is complete.

And they climb on top of each other. To the point where a stack of shellbabies will topple over and the whole lot will be Confused about this Turn Of Events

more things i’ve discovered after 2 years of raising garden snails:

- they will wiggle their eye stalks in excitement - they have favorite places to sleep and favorite friends to sleep with - they’re good for your skin so let them run around on ur face!!! - they can feel their shells, which means they can feel u pet them (pet gently!!) - u can help a snail with a broken shell by giving it eggshells or cuttlebones to scrape (the calcium helps them patch up!) - they like a change of scenery and will explore all day if u change something - absolute cuddle bugs. love to snuggle with u, with friends, with dirt - u can hear them chew!! listen closely when u feed them….. asmr - as distinct as snowflakes, every single one is different!! i can tell all of my snails apart easily - babies. absolute baby children - speaking of babies, baby garden snails are no bigger than raindrops and translucent… delicate!! keep in a separate enclosure until they’re bigger!! baby jail!!! - some snails are shy……… kiss them. they are important

Since it's not too terribly busy at work, I decided to make my shellbabies their lunch for tomorrow. Finely chopped baby carrots, mushrooms, collards, strawberries and quarter cuts of blueberries to add on top of a nice chopped romaine salad with moistened turtle pellets.
