so i was rewatching sierra burgess is a loser because as someone who is plus-sized and was in high school, it's something i relate to so, so much (minus the cute romance), and i noticed that in this final scene where sierra and veronica are hugging, veronica is wearing a SUNFLOWER RING. and that just makes me so emotional..

because it's one thing to tell your plus-size friends that they really are beautiful despite the stupid stigma of society (which no matter how true it is, they will never believe) and it's another to show them that they are beautiful BECAUSE of the way they are

maybe i'm making this into more than it is because i want so badly for it to help me heal, but this movie (and especially the song "sunflower") were already so touching to me and veronica's whole-hearted love and support just makes it all the more meaningful

it’s been a few years and i’m still thinking about the sierra burgess controversy. like yes it was a terrible netflix original teen flick but the fact that the main response to it was ‘but if it was two men tricking a woman we’d all call it sexist… standard feminism, right?’ is so insane given that it was openly, obviously, blatantly, a gender-flipped cyrano de bergerac. like down to the name. i’ve not seen any comparable response to non-genderflipped adaptations (which do exist! #roxy is just the same thing with boys!) and i just can’t imagine why

my thoughts on Sierra Burgess is a Loser

(spoilers)

okay so sierra b. is a loser is a netflix teen movie about a girl that is not conventionally attractive - and that was the whole reason why i watched it. its so rare to find a movie about someone who doesnt look like they could be an instagram model or something. the storyline (dumbed down) goes pretty much like this:

sierra burgess isnt very popular.

there is a mean girl trio with the main mean girl that hates sierra for no apparent reason.

the mean girl gives sierras number to a guy that asks the mean girl out. the guy that asks the mean girl out is now texting sierra (but he thinks he is texting the mean girl) and sierra falls for him.

now the mean girl has this other guy that dumped her because she wasnt clever enough or what

and sierra somehow starts to cooperate with the mean girl: the mean girl sends photos to the guy that sierra is texting (who thinks sierra is the mean girl) to make their convo more believable, while sierra tutors the mean girl to make her seem smarter.

what happens at the end is basically that the mean girl and sierra become friends, the guy finds out that sierra isnt the mean girl but he chooses to be w/ her anyways and sierra posts some stupid photo of the mean girl on her ig.

now there are some things that i liked about this movie:

the mean girl actually has a very messy background: she isnt very rich and her mom is pressuring her to be pretty and stuff, her household isnt very happy and when she becomes friends with sierra, their friendship is really heartwarming. honestly the writers could have just let the guy find out that he isnt texting the mean girl, make him get angry at both sierra and the mean girl and leave them. the girls just stay friends. period.

sierras parents were sweethearts.

the guy that was texting sierra was a sweetheart as well

i have never really seen a similar movie

what i didnt like were sierras actions, of course. she was lying to a guy that loved "her" just because she wanted to feel loved and because she had a crush on him. then she posted the photo of the mean girl, who was her friend at that time and thus hurt her feelings. and she also neglected her other friend to study with the mean girl.

i have no idea what was the main idea of this story, but i think that its supposed to show a character making horrible decisions - because real people do horrible decisions in real life as well. the ending wasnt happy. a guy got with sierra just because she tricked him. that is wrong. he thought that he was messaging the mean girl the whole time. and what sierra did with the photo was terrible as well. i mean she embarassed her friend online.

the whole movie left me feeling a bit confused, because i was happy for sierra - she got the guy she liked, but i was sad for everyone else. i would like to see more movies like this anyways. the main character wasnt really the hero - she was both the hero and the villain. in one person.

just like every other person in this world.
