Sharp Stick Could Have Been Better

Sharp Stick is the newest film from director Lena Dunham. Dunham also stars in the movie. 

The film is about a naive girl who starts an affair with her employer but ends up learning a lot about herself in the process. 

Kristine Forseth is in the lead role here and she does all she can to make this movie work. The film falls flat in a lot of areas where it shouldn’t. Mainly with the plot, as it felt completely lost at times. There were glimmers of hope in this movie where you feel like it could have a promising ending but whatever hopes you have are slashed by Lena Dunham’s direction of the movie. It seems like Dunham couldn’t get out of her own way while writing this. There were a lot of interesting concepts that this movie touches on but never goes fully into, which just ends up feeling extremely underwhelming. 

Overall, the movie has glimmers of something special but never gets there leaving the audience with an underwhelming feeling as the film comes to a close. Kristine Forseth and Jon Bernthal both give good performances with what they had to work with but the film falls flat in most ways. 

Editors note: Even if we didn’t like the movie, it’s still so refreshing to see a studio like Utopia Movies put out films that other studios don’t want to take chances on giving filmmakers an outlet to have their films be seen. More studios should take note!
