Sims 4 PokéTypes Legacy Challenge!

Below are some flexible rules. Honestly do whatever makes it fun for you.

Try to limit money cheats! Freerealestate for first house only!

Short or Normal lifespan recommended. Long lifespan allowed, but also there’s 18 gens, you might not want that…

Mods and CC are allowed/encouraged!

Extra Hard Mode: You can only control the parent sims of every generation. NOTE: Great for challenge, shitty for storytelling.

Optional: Name generations after a pokemon in that type, and color their clothes and such accordingly!

Optional: Feel free to add more or tweak life events and plot points!

Most importantly, have fun!

Gen 1: Normal

“The Normal type is the most basic type of Pokémon. They are very common and appear from the very first route you visit.” - pokemon database

All you want is a Normal life. Job, house, maybe a pet, white picket fence, and 2.5 kids. Simple is where it’s at.

Create a binary gendered Sim as your head of household, young adult.

Traits: have the Practice Makes Perfect trait, and/or all relatively boring base game traits.

Aspiration: either Super Parent or Big Happy Family.

Goal: 1-2 biological kids, an adopted kid, possibly a pet, and a spouse.

Career: any “normal” job like freelance, business, retail, or even two part-time jobs. Nothing fancy.

Next Heir: any child, your choice

Hard mode (optional): no high quality appliances or electronics

You got gifted a decent inheritance from your grandma passing, and decided to use it to get a place of your own! Time to become the adult you always dreamed of. Use your phone to get a job (or two) and start the daily grind.

After a while you meet someone you like, then like-like, then fall in love with. They propose and you start planning your life.

You decide to test the waters of parenting. Adopt, don’t shop! This is where you get your adopted kid (and possible pet)!

You be the best parent you can be, while working. Help with homework, volunteer sometimes, just help your kiddo grow up right.

Eventually they become a teenager. They’ve wanted a little sibling since you adopted them, but you wanted to make sure they got all your limited attention growing up. Now they’re saying they’d help out if you had a baby. Maybe it’s a good time…

Try for baby or science baby.

You did it. The perfect life.

Gen 2: Grass

“Grass is one of the three basic elemental types along with Fire and Water, which constitute the three starter Pokémon.” - pokemon database

You grew up in the most boring house imaginable. Your parents loved you, doted on you, and gave you a good moral compass. Now you want to pass that forward. You may be just one person, but even a little difference helps!

Traits: They cannot be evil, and they must be vegetarian or freegan.

Aspiration: When they’re a young adult, give them an aspiration of greenery - either Freelance Botanist, Eco Innovator, or Outdoor Enthusiast.

Goal: Master the Gardening skill and get one of every plant, eventually making a death flower. Maybe don’t actually grow the cow plant seed, though…

Career: anything to do with plants, even if that means no formal career and just being unemployed and selling food from your little backyard farm. Formal jobs like Gardener or Conservationist work too.

Next Heir: AFAB, can be adopted or cheated to ensure gender.

Hard Mode: Get, maintain, and maybe even feed non-family sims to a cow plant. See if you can get an emotion drink from it.

Do everything you can to make your world greener! Literally and figuratively.

Get a tiny house (or Tiny House) and start a backyard garden. Do whatever little side jobs you need until you can focus on your true passion for nature!

Once you master the Gardening skill, realize that plants, while great listeners, still don’t feel like a full family. Find a partner to marry and have an heir with, bonus points if they’re wearing green or have green hair when you meet.

Teach your child the importance of nature! Plenty of trips to parks, hunt for frogs together, etc.

Hopefully they’ll keep this world from burning to the ground. Right?

Gen 3: Fire

“Fire types are notoriously rare in the early stages of the games so choosing the Fire variation starter is often a plus.” - pokemon database

Hell Ablaze, was your parent weird! They talked to their plants more than you sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, they loved you, and catching frogs was cool… but sometimes you just wanted to get their attention, you know?

Traits: Dye your hair bright red, just to spite your parents. Have the trait Hot Headed.

Aspiration: You want love, every kind of love. Serial Romantic or Paragon Partner!

Goal: Woohoo and date sims of each (or every) gender, and have 5 or more partners before having a kid.

Career: Style Influencer, Romance Consultant, Simfluencer, or Video Game Steamer.

Next Heir: Oldest Child

Hard Mode: you’re not sure who your kid is from, so you decide to live and coparent with ALL your partners! How heated could things get?

You didn’t really feel the warmth of affection, growing up. You never really doubted you were loved, but the focus was always on the big picture. Now you want that warmth you never had.

Date around. Have flings. Try to get simstagram famous. Post on social bunny all the time. Fall in love with spicy foods, bright colors, romantic notions, and generally just try to have it all!

Eventually you sleep with one too many people and whoops, you’re eating for two.

Pick a partner, or three, or more. You’re going to pour your heart and soul, blood sweat and tears, and all your love into this kid.

And maybe buy a fireplace. Or hot tub. Or both.

Gen 4: Water

“Water is the most common type with over 150 Pokémon, which are based on a wide variety of fish and other sea-dwelling creatures.” - pokemon database

Your mom sure was a firecracker, huh? People were always coming and going, you don’t even know who your dad is… Eventually you just kinda learned to go with the flow, yknow?

Traits: Child of the Ocean if you have it! Otherwise Lazy and Cheerful.

Aspiration: Angling Ace

Goal: max your swimming and fishing skills, go skinny dipping, and have your heir via shower or hot tub Woohoo, if possible.

Career: Freelance or Unemployed. Do a little bit of everything to subsist.

Next Heir: Youngest Child

Hard Mode: don’t max any skills other than fishing and swimming, while subsisting off those skills without a real job.

Your house was chaos growing up and your mom was crazy passionate about everything… So you kinda just try everything, I guess? You don’t really have any passions, and don’t have the willpower to daily grind, so you just kinda do everything, but not very well.

The house is always a little messy, but you don’t really care. Life just kinda flows and you go where it takes you. You follow your whims, don’t really dislike anything, and just kinda… scoot by.

Eventually life pairs you up with someone long enough to have a kid. Maybe you’re not meant to be together forever, but maybe you are? You hold hands like otters for as long as life allows, but nothing’s set in stone.

You try to teach your kid to just roll with it. But they got your mom’s passion. So you wind up rolling with it instead.

Gen 5: Rock

“Rock is a solid type as one might expect.” - pokemon database

Money was always tight growing up. Your parent seemed to just kinda do… whatever? But they didn’t really pursue any dreams. You have dreams, though. And you’re gonna grind to get them!

Traits: Ambitious &/or Overachiever

Aspiration: Renaissance Sim, Neighborhood Confidant, or Leader of the Pack

Goal: Reach max level in at least two careers

Career(s): Astronaut, Secret Agent, Law, Military, Politician, &/or Doctor

Next Heir: Youngest Child

Hard Mode: max EVERY SKILL

You could never understand why your parent never really went for anything. They were good enough at everything, sure. But you wanna really show you’re reliable. You want to show the world what you’re made of. That you’ve got rock solid will power and with that you can do anything!

So you do. You pick your goal and you throw yourself against the wall until you break or break through. And you never break. You just pick yourself up and keep trying.

You make friends over time, being so straightforward and reliable. Eventually one confides in you that they’ve found your resilience attractive since they met you. You Woohoo right then and there. And probably many more times after that.

Your partner mostly takes care of the kids, though. You’ve got goals to achieve and a mark to leave on history.

Gen 6: Bug

“Most Bug Pokémon grow quickly and evolve sooner than other types. As a result, they are often very weak.” - pokemon database

Your parent was a high achiever, and as a kid you were always pushing yourself for their approval. You were always praised for what a bright kid you were… Then you hit burnout. Time to find out who loves you for you.

Traits: pick two from Childish, Socially Awkward, Erratic, and Jealous

Aspiration: Renaissance Sim or Academic

Goal: Get to college/adulthood with all As and maxed childhood skills, then burn out. Go chronically online.

Career: You can only make money by computer interactions. Become a writer or a programmer or a troll, whatever.

Next Heir: Only Child

Hard Mode: If it gives you a fear or the gloomy trait from a life event, you have to take and can’t get rid of it.

You spend your entire childhood grinding like the parent you idolize. You always take for granted everything your other parent does, and often push away their help. You have to prove you are the perfect kid.

Then you’re not a kid anymore. You’re a mediocre adult and your idol looks down on you.

Pick fights with your parent until you’re on bad terms. Rely entirely on your other parent until you age up and find someone to marry, then move into your spouse’s house.

You peaked early. Now you’re clingy and incessantly needy, constantly bugging your spouse for attention when you’re not in your shell, on the computer.

But hey, at least the computer helps you get some cash flow.

Eventually have a kid, probably late into adulthood. You don’t know how to be there for them. You’re not even there for yourself. But shower them in affection and hope you can charm them into liking you.

Gen 7: Psychic

“The Psychic type has few outright strengths, however, it also has few weaknesses. In the first generation it ended up being massively overpowered, mainly due to a complete lack of powerful Bug moves, its only weakness.” - pokemon database

Your one parent was constantly up your butt and sensitive to the weirdest things, and your other parent enabled them. You were always expected to reassure them or leave them alone. So now you walk on eggshells and try to predict everyone’s needs.

Traits: Loyal and Perfectionist, possibly Paranoid

Aspiration: Neighborhood Confidant or Friend of the World, then optionally swap to Inner Peace or Zen Guru

Goal: Befriend people and juggle friendships to keep everyone happy. Have a few incompatible partners before finding The One.

Career: Comedian, Journalist, or Actor.

Next Heir: Adopt

Hard Mode: Complete all your whims, goals, and/or bucket list items, while still maxing your relationship with everyone special to you.

After having to predict emotions most of your life, you’ve gotten really, really good at Empathy. You’re in tune to everyone’s feelings, all the time. And you just want to make everyone happy, okay?

You take losing people really hard, so you do everything not to lose them.

That doesn’t always work out for you, though.

After plenty of heartbreaks, you find someone who cares as much as you do… but about you!

Fall madly in love, learn about healthy relationships, and best of all? Learn to love yourself.

We’re breaking generational trauma and breaking bloodlines. Who needs blood family anyway? Found family is where it’s at! You and your partner adopt your kids, deciding not to have any yourselves. (Feel free to use CAS full edit to make them sterile.)

Gen 8: Fairy

Your life is a fairy tale. You never knew your birth parents and, after years of group homes and foster parents, you get adopted by the nicest parents ever! You are constantly reassured how loved you are, reminded how chosen family matters most, and are taught how to be a good person without overextending yourself.

Traits: Good, optionally Generous or Family Oriented

Aspiration: anything from Family, Animal, or Love categories

Goal: Live a good life

Career: Style Influencer, Astronaut (ranger branch), Secret Agent (diamond branch), Doctor, or Vet. Maybe swap eventually to freelance.

Next Heir: Firstborn

Hard Mode: Donate to charity and volunteer with family as often as possible. Bonus points if you also breed and release axolotls.

You may never know who brought you into this world, but you know who taught you to love it. Your supportive, adoptive parents! You don’t take anything for granted.

You learn from them, grow with them, and take all their lessons to heart.

Eventually you meet someone just as kind and good and generous, and you fall madly in love, and you get together.

Time to pass along the love and kindness your parents showed you!

Gen 9: Steel

“[Steel] is the strongest type defensively, with 10 types being not very effective against it and the Poison type having no effect.” - pokemon database

You were raised by the most loving, kind, generous, sincere, and perfect parent. You were taught resilience from an early age. You were taught kindness and respect for all things. But why don’t you feel any connection to anything? It feels like you’re a robot going through the motions.

Traits: Loner, Gloomy, and either Noncommittal or Practice Makes Perfect

Aspiration: Computer Whiz or Master Maker

Goal: Find meaning in what feels meaningless — have a life event that swaps out your gloomy traits! Bonus if you wind up Self Assured.

Career: Any, hop around a few times even

Next Heir: Your favorite child

Hard Mode: Have several kids, be distant to all of them, but have one you secretly like best that is the only one you keep in your household. The rest move out with their other parents, who you inevitably break up with and leave with their kids.

You love your parent, you think? And you try to find love, but it never feels… right.

Then you eventually have a kid that you see differently. They make you want to be the best parent you can be.

But you have no idea how to do that. You’re clumsy and awkward in your attempts to be a good parent, but you do your best, you hope.

Gen 10: Fighting

“Fighting Pokémon are strong and muscle-bound, often based on martial artists. Fighting moves are super-effective against five other types (as is Ground), making them very good offensively.” - pokemon database

Your parent tried. You have a dozen half siblings that you don’t really talk to. You were clearly the favorite, but you still basically had to fend for yourself. Your parent didn’t, well, know how to be a parent. So you toughed it out and mostly took care of yourself. With no one to talk to about things, you focused on working out your emotions in physical ways. Healthily, hopefully, but you don’t really know. You were never modeled healthy emotions.

Traits: Hotheaded and Active, choose between Mean, Bro, or Self Absorbed

Aspirations: Bodybuilder or Extreme Sport Enthusiast

Goal: Max all your physical skills out, then enroll in therapy (have a self-discovery moment or attend meditation and yoga classes)

Career: Athlete or Manual Laborer

Next Heir: Oldest Boy

Hard Mode: Max out the physical career tracks, then swap to something more healthily expressive (art, writing, music, wellness, etc)

You constantly butt heads with everyone.

You think it’s cause you take no bullshit, and need to look out for yourself first.

Actually, you just suck at social stuff.

You only figure that out when you meet someone you fall for who takes none of your bullshit either. They teach you how to communicate, how to work out emotions more healthily… And eventually, you get married and have some kids.

You want a boy, they want one of each. Whatever, the boy is your favorite. They’ll take on the family line.

Gen 11: Electric

“There are relatively few Electric Pokémon” - pokemon database

Your parent was a little combative, but not at you. They were your staunchest defender and greatest ally. Anyone mess with you? They’ll chew out the bastard and go up the chain of command until it’s fixed. It kinda gives you a heady mix of severe anxiety and the feeling you can do anything.

Traits: Outgoing, either Idealist or Perfectionist, and optionally Cringe or Socially Awkward

Aspirations: Renaissance Sim to start. Change aspirations at least 3 times, only completing your favorite one

Goal: Build a robosim (or reach handiness level 10 and max relationship with a cc “robo sim”) and have like 4+ kids via adoption or science.

Career: Swap around a few times, then settle on Tech Guru at the end.

Next Heir: Youngest Girl

Hard Mode: Move houses/towns at least 3 times as well, each home decorated wildly differently.

You are unique and quirky and prooooobably have ADHD.

You bounce off the walls as a child, swap interests constantly, and can’t finish anything to save your life. You try dozens of jobs, try dozens of aspirations, never really retaining friends.

No one can really keep up with your perpetual zoomies. So you MAKE a friend who can!

You don’t really know if you even have romantic or sexual attractions, so your robo bestie is your co-parent of some adopted and science babies!

You have split attention enough to keep up with a full household, but your baby girl stole your heart. You never show your favoritism though — if you make a little electric toy for one kid, you make one for every kid!

Gen 12: Ground

“Ground is one of the strongest types offensively: it is super-effective against five other types […] and Earthquake is one of the strongest moves in the game” - pokemon database

You were raised by a hyperactive person and a robot. The robot was the sane one. You learned to handle chaos in stride, but also learned you kind of needed to make a big stink to get your human parent’s attention. So you’re very, very chill… until you’re not.

Traits: Proper or Bro, Loyal, and Hot Headed

Aspirations: The Curator or Crystal Crafter

Goal: Build a mountain of wealth — both liquid and in assets — to leave to the next generation.

Career: Salaryperson, Business, Engineer, or Self-Employed

Next Heir: Only Child

Hard Mode: Become a hoarder of all things expensive, just scraping by because you put all your earnings into valuable objects, then leave them all to your kid to deal with.

You grew up preferring the company of your more grounded “parent”. Even though you had no blood relation, your bioparent was too flighty for you. You grew up enjoying the simple things in life, with occasional very nice treats and experiences.

You find a grounded, adult job. And you steadily rise through the ranks.

Eventually you meet someone just as frugal and simple, and you settle down.

You want to give that simple life to your child, now. So you make mac n cheese or taco casserole every night, pancakes or eggs every morning, send them off with lunches of ham and cheese or pb&j, and go to work to bring home the bacon. And boy, do you make that dough. You could use it to spoil your kid, but then they wouldn’t be set for life. And you want to build a firm foundation for them to live off of once you’re gone.

So instead you pack the attic with statues, fine art, and more. The more wealth you can pass down, the better. Money may be no object by a certain point, but a penny saved is a penny earned!

Gen 13: Ice

“Ice type Pokémon are now the rarest of all types” - pokemon database

Your parent hoarded wealth. You always were made fun of a bit in school for having all thrifted and hand-me-down clothes. You always wanted something more than just mac n cheese or pb&j. You never got to have fancy birthday parties. But the attic was your hideaway — you loved being surrounded by gemstones and art. Your rich friend once let you try their caviar and wagyu steak lunch and you were hooked. You want ice — you want gems and cold, hard cash. Time to live the good life you could have had. Even if you have to freeze your heart to get it.

Traits: Snob and Materialistic, and either Kleptomaniac, Self Absorbed, or Shady.

Aspirations: Sticky Fingers or Fabulously Wealthy

Goal: Live the life of luxury you always wanted! Have a maid or butler, a home chef, whatever. And keep that money flowing!

Career: Criminal

Next Heir: A child from the partner you actually find love with

Hard Mode: You must buy only the most expensive items for your house. You’d rather do without than have something less than the best.

You always wanted more than you had. It was always just out of reach, even though your parents had the means. Sure, it COULD pay for your house and education, but where’s the fun in that?

You were never spoiled, so it’s time to spoil yourself.

You fall in with a bad crowd, taking anything you can from whatever chances you’re given.

Your first marriage (or two) is for money.

It’s only after you have the life of luxury you wanted that you realize… there’s more to life than things.

Once you complete your aspiration and/or career, you eventually go looking for love for your next marriage. If you had any kids before, you decide if they come with you or not, but you can’t help but see your past in them. You have a baby (or several) with your second, third, whatever — your FINAL partner. From that love, you find your heir.

Gen 14: Poison

“The Poison type is regarded as one of the weakest offensively […] It fares a little better defensively but its best advantage is through status moves like Toxic.” - pokemon database

You grew up rich, snooty, and spoiled. You never lacked anything, and you make your displeasure known when you don’t get what you want…

Traits: Mean, and any traits you find especially hard to work with; like maybe Slob, Lazy, Erratic, or High Maintenance.

Aspirations: Seeker of Secrets, Fabulously Filthy, or your least favorite aspiration

Goal: Get at least one good or generous sim to marry you, and try not to push them away.

Career: Player’s choice, but “bad guy” career paths encouraged

Next Heir: Firstborn or Only Child

Hard Mode: Try to find a Good, Generous, and/or Idealist sim that you keep a FULLY POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP with until the next generation, bonus points if your kid also has a good relationship with you!

Squeaky wheel gets the oil, right?

Well it did in your house. No meant ‘push harder’ and ‘not now’ meant throw a tantrum or beg.

That didn’t set you up great for the real world. You’re pushy, mean, and snooty, and it pushes people away and makes you plenty of enemies.

Eventually some poor, kindhearted soul thinks they can fix you. Maybe they can… Or maybe you’ll just use them for all they’re worth…

Either way, you have a kid — and have no idea how to prepare them for the world, since your parents apparently didn’t teach you how to handle it.

Gen 15: Dark

“The Dark type was introduced in the second generation of Pokémon games as a measure to balance the types. In particular, its immunity to Psychic cut down that type’s advantage by a long way.” - pokemon database

You grew up with mixed signals and mind games. Your other parent tried to assure you the first one loved you, but they were… Disastrously ineffective at showing it.

You find solace in monsters. If monsters can love, perhaps your parent did love you. Or maybe you’re the monster, and other monsters deserve love too…

Traits: Gloomy or Macabre and either Socially Awkward or Loner

Aspirations: If you have any monster packs — vampire or werewolves, for even spellcasters — any of the “good” aspirations from them. Otherwise, a Creativity aspiration or Big Happy Family.

Goal: Learn to love yourself — either by leaning into the darkness or by having a trait change — and then have a kid you can raise better than you were.

Career: Any, play this as goth as you’d like!

Next Heir: Science Baby with Self

Hard Mode: Live off your parent’s dwindled estate, and let a lover be the breadwinner. Spend your days moping around your house and writing bad poetry.

You had half of a good childhood. One parent was lovely, the other… not so much. Eventually you two came to some kind of stability, but the damage was done. You’re never sure what’s around the next dark corner of life — or if you’re the thing that goes bump in the night.

But you go to therapy. You go to skill building classes. You pour out your feelings into your hobbies.

Maybe you will be visibly a monster, but you’re gonna try not to act like one to any kids.

So, when you think you’re ready, you have a science baby.

And you hope any genetic trauma you got doesn’t wind up in them, too…

Gen 16: Ghost

“Ghosts are rare Pokémon, and the only type to have two immunities.[…] When paired with the Dark type it was the only type combination to have no weaknesses…” - pokemon database

You are the spitting image of your parent.

You see how they’re haunted by their past.

Maybe you can step forward, to a new life, together?

Traits: Gloomy or Chased by Death, but also Loyal.

Aspirations: Ghost Historian or Chief of Mischief — but end up with Neighborhood Confidant or Friend of the World.

Goal: Have a multigenerational household. Your sole parent lives with you, or you with them, while you raise your child.

Career: Writer

Next Heir: Your Choice

Hard Mode: Don’t get rid of any of the gloomy or darker traits, and keep the ghost of any parents around as long as possible.

Your parent may be a little eccentric, but they mean well. They’ve been through some stuff. As you got older, you learned more and more of it.

Maybe, together, you can help them face the world again.

Go through the motions of childhood. Get c’s in everything if you need. If you pass, that’s good enough. You’re not here for school. You don’t know what you’re here for yet, but for now, just leave everything on read.

Eventually you decide your goal is to give people hope of a better ending. A hope of closure and healing and moving on to a better life.

So you write. Worlds about ghosts, both literal and figurative. Metaphors for healing weave through every story, and every protagonist practices some coping skills people can use in real life.

You rely on your parent as much as they rely on you. You just live together indefinitely. Maybe adding on to the house as needed, but still. Stronger together, right?

Find someone not weirded out by multigenerational living, and marry them.

Maybe it’s time to write your own story.

Gen 17: Flying

“Most Flying type Pokémon are based on birds or insects, along with some mythical creatures like dragons. On average they are faster than any other type.” - pokemon database

You were raised communally, and having three or more people to come to with problems was amazing. You never felt left out or ignored. Everyone wanted what’s best for you. And you get to follow all your neat, niche interests with abandon. Your family is the wind beneath your wings, and you’re ready to soar!

Traits: Creative, optionally Idealist, Noncommittal, or Overachiever

Aspirations: As many as you can, hop around as needed!

Goal: Build up a nest egg and then leave the nest! But eventually come back home to roost.

Career: Your choice, but Astronaut would be hilarious

Next Heir: Only Child or Eldest Child

Hard Mode: Realize you’re better flying solo — never get a partner

You leave the nest, have a place of your own, have some adventures. Maybe you have some flings, maybe you find someone, maybe you feel better flying solo.

Eventually it just feels wrong in a place by your lonesome.

So you move back home, have a kid (possibly not in that order) and get to be a big happy flock again!

Your parents help raise your child the way you were raised.

Gen 18: Dragon

“Dragons are among the most elusive and powerful of all Pokémon. Nineteen legendary Pokémon are part Dragon type and eight have legendary-like stats.” - pokemon database

You were given the best possible start on life. You stand on the shoulders of giants.

Do you hoard all the love you’ve been given? Or do you gift its magic to the masses?

You are powerful, and the future is yours to decide.

Hard Mode: this gen becomes a supersim challenge

The joke is that YOU are the dragon gen for getting through all of this. It’s a long, grueling challenge, and you made it through.

This sim is YOUR IDEAL SIM! It’s your self-insert, your wildest fantasies are to be lived out vicariously through them.

Prologue

Summerhill Court Park

He had to get away; the feeling of being trapped in a situation not of his own making mocked his every move. There was no support from the constant taunts of his mother who was smart enough to not lay a finger on him. He was nineteen, old enough that he was able to find some way in life other than to continue to live under his parents roof and have to tolerate the constant berating inflicted on him by his mother. “Why can’t you be intelligent like your Uncle Hidekazu? At least when he studied he got marks that were tops in the province. Every-one’s going to think you’re an idiot. Are you mentally retarded that you can’t figure out those questions?” It was a constant refrain from the time he was old enough to understand that schoolwork was important yet the fact remained that he didn’t feel like he was able to understand what it was that he was being taught. It didn’t sink in the first time, nor the second...nor any of the subsequent times that the same instruction was levied against his comprehension. It was as if there was a disconnect somewhere. And combine that with an inability to explain oneself and the situation he found himself in didn’t help matters any either. So he was summarily lumped in and assessed as stupid and doesn’t want to try. “Do you even realize just how hard your father had to work in order to make enough to get you your piano lessons and your math tutor? The least you could do is try!”

He was trying...trying hard...yet failing. It seemed as though five hours of study as expected by him on a nightly basis was just an exercise in beating his head against the wall.

I can’t help that my brain doesn’t work like other people’s. You keep insisting that I’m smart but I’m not compared to other people. You keep insisting that I’m lazy, but I’m not. I just don’t see the reasoning behind continuing to bang my head against a wall trying to learn something that it’s going to be nearly impossible for me to understand…when I could be doing the same amount of work doing something I like doing.

For most of Haruo’s childhood, it was subtle putdowns and comparisons. Then when he’d turned 13, the verbal abuse ramped up. And the contradictions. He was expected to excel in his schoolwork, yet he was subtly told that he was stupid and any time he got 100% on his exams which was a rare event, he was told not to get too big for his britches. So it was this constant up-down confusion that was driven into him and the lack of emotional security was the main reason why he lived in a constant state of stress and fear. And after a while that sort of thing wears on a person.

The toughest part of school was making friends. Because then those friends wanted to invite you to birthday parties and get-togethers and Mom didn’t like wasting money; so no parties for him. Mom didn’t like anything as far as he knew, least of all him. All she ever did was nag at him, “Did you do your homework? Did you get 100% on your test?” If you didn’t, you were a worthless piece of microscopic dung, not even worth dusting and throwing out, who wouldn’t amount to anything worthwhile. Evidently she resented him for something, he didn’t know what. But it seemed as though she was dedicated to making his existence a living hell. He was constantly told that if he couldn’t get the same grades as his uncle (his mother’s older maternal brother) that he would be destined to live out his life as a drudge; to live out his life in fear of starvation or worse. There were two ways to deal with that kind of abuse and both involved a matter of defiance.

The first involved utilizing it as motivation to give her a “fuck you” by proving her wrong and excelling!

The second involved shutting down, proving her right and in essence saying “well if you’re going to think I’m useless, might as well prove you right…so fuck you too!”

The first was fine and dandy if his mother had underestimated his skills and the educational institution and medical fields had not turned a blind eye to any neurological education deficits. Then he could utilize those aptitudes and soar.

But if by chance the parent had over-estimated the son’s grasp of his skills and turned a blind eye to his neurological deficits then the latter would rear its ugly head and the son would give up trying because he knew that no matter how hard he tried, the barriers were too high to overcome with just his abilities alone.

And it was into the latter category that Haruo fell into. As smart as he had appeared in his elementary school classes, going into high-school had been a cold-shower awakening as to his inadequacies in curricular study. There was a nagging feeling of not being able to measure up whenever he was tossed a new mathematical/algebraic concept or a chemistry or physics concept. And try as he might, he was just not able to grasp the concepts. They unfailingly eluded him no matter what study techniques he attempted to use. And being met with recrimination every single time one failed a test because the concepts were too difficult to grasp started to eat away at him.

If he was going to get yelled at as hard as he’d tried to understand the concepts then might as well say “fuck it” and not do the work.

And it took three times as long for him to understand the idea behind what was being taught to him. And then being told that he wasn’t catching on quickly enough or that his uncle would have understood it just like that, was not motivation. In fact to Haruo’s way of thinking it was a great de-motivator and a good enough reason to give his mother a subtle “fuck you”.

Time was of the essence in learning new concepts and the school curriculum was not tailored to helping those who were slow. Regardless of what was said, the school system didn’t like having to deal with those who were slow and made sure they knew it.

Those who couldn’t hack the curriculum were shunted off to classes monikered “the Retards” or “Special Ed” or even worse; the “Shortbus Crowd”. Political Correctness was not a hallmark of the 80s nor was it in the decade that preceded it.

Luckily for Haruo’s mental sanity, he had a bulwark against the never-ending pressure his mother inflicted on him.

His beloved friend, River…she was very much a tomboy; a fun-loving girl who enjoyed rough-housing with the other kids and taking long walks in the woods talking about stuff. In elementary school her choice at recess was to play war with the rest of the boys rather than sit with the other girls and play with dolls. So she’d end up covered in dust from head to toe with the rest of the boys.

She was also not your generically pretty type of girl. Her facial features were angular with a strong jawline. And her mother kept her hair short in a pageboy cut until recently so that she could keep it organized without it ending up in a mess but now she wore it long and wavy and she’d actually started to use make-up though as a teen-ager, she like to overstate her looks a bit – for teens, there was no less is more. She was good-natured and empathetic and always willing to lend a helping hand. With other kids at school, making fun of her for her nose which seemed a bit too large for her face; it was her only sore point that would get her riled up enough to start a fight which from being tough as nails and from playing with the boys at school; she would win every fight she started and well, the ones she didn’t start either. She was no wilting wallflower. You didn’t mess with a McIrish. Her younger sister, Maegyn, on the other hand was often seen on the arm of Parker Langerak. Parker had always fancied River, but River wouldn’t give him the time of day so Parker went with Maegyn and it appeared as though they were happy together. River was more interested in the son of the Asian couple across the street which for all intents and purposes was Haruo, though he had absolutely no clue – River was the girl that he hung out with on weekends and lunch hour and recess when they had that sort of thing back in elementary school.

River’s crowning feature was her brown hair which if the light hit it right gleamed a bright golden-red. And Haruo was glad that she was his friend. She was the one rock he could lean on. And it seemed as if fate was destined to keep them together as she was his friend from elementary onwards and the years had brought them even closer.

River’s mom was a kindly, single lady who was trying to raise River and Maegyn on her own after her husband decided to bail on the marriage. River missed her dad, even though he hadn’t been owning up to his responsibilities. Her mother tried her best but it was hard being a single mother and trying to earn a living enough to support her two daughters so it was nice that her daughter’s daycare nanny had put her with getting the financing for Asilomar without the expectation of being paid back. Besides Grandma Yumiko loved River like she loved her own grandson and would be livid if Mayumi mistreated River in any way shape or form. The years had been tough on Fiona with the lines of stress showing on her features. But she’d carried her burden with quiet dignity.

Yasunobu was someone who wanted to work with his hands so he became a gardener. He was trying to get his cooking skills high enough to cook for the family since his wife was absolutely useless in the kitchen. Having grown up in Japan during the Second World War, he was of the opinion that life, if not lived, was wasted. He’d had to raise his own brothers and sister when they were young. His father had passed away when he was just six years old. Humping bags of rice and sugar over the mountains during the war years just so that he could support his mother and her children. There was a sense of duty and responsibility to his family no matter how unpleasant the task. He had been dealt a lovely smelling pile of garbage when having to deal with his harridan of a wife. But he bore it with the patience of someone who had seen way too much hardship in his life. All he wanted was for his son to grow up responsible and understanding of the fact that no matter what adversity came down the turnpike that he would handle it with dignity and silence; just as he had.

Mayumi (nee Miyagawa) Chikamori was a different kettle of foul-smelling fish. She loved nothing more than to make others miserable. As a school-teacher, she had that ability and she wielded it like a finely honed weapon. She would give detentions out to everyone if they even asked her why she did something that seemed the slightest bit unfair to then. In her classroom it was her way or the highway. And frankly she preferred it that way, no backtalk, no insolence, in fact, the kids were lucky if they were even allowed to breathe.

What she hated was the parent-teacher inevitable confrontations. As she felt she was superior to anyone she felt she shouldn’t have to answer to anyone, even to a school district supervisor. She loathed them. Who did that two-bit paper-pushing bureaucrat think he was talking to? After all, Mayumi was a straight A academic whiz who could think and argue circles around anyone. In fact in her understanding, the whole world revolved around her. So why shouldn’t she get the benefit of being adored by everybody?

And this was poor Haruo’s lot in existence. He would never be able to exceed or even meet Mayumi’s expectations; so why even bother.

Haruo’s maternal grandfather, Torakazu Miyagawa had landed in Los Angeles, CA, USA in 1907 and made his way up the coast to settle in Vancouver, BC; his wife Yumiko came over in 1908. They had 4 children, one stillborn and three live-births through the late 20s and early 30s. When the war came to British Columbia in 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in the U.S., the Miyagawas were sent to an internment camp in Slocan where they were housed for a while, then shipped off to a sugar beet plantation in Iron Springs in Alberta. What possessions they had were auctioned off by the government of British Columbia and they never saw a single cent back.

Everything they had post-war had to be built up from the ground up. From sheer pennilessness to a decent standard of living. At the age of 58, with all their possessions that he’d worked for gone, Miyagawa Torakazu, Japanese naming protocol, last name first, given names after; had to gambatte and put his nose to the grindstone to build up his family’s fortune from nothing yet again. Torakazu wanted nothing more than to have his children apply themselves to their studies and to have a better life than what he’d had; to make his sacrifices to make a home in Canada worth something.

Were they not Canadian? And not Japs. They’d professed their loyalty to King George VI and country and not to Hirohito but no one had wanted the slanty-eyed Japs in Canada to aid in the war effort against Imperial Japan. After all, a Jap is a Jap and nothing more.

After all he’d endured in the internment camp, Torakazu had wanted nothing to do with the hakujin woman and child his wife took into her care. But for all the suffering that Yumiko had underwent in Slocan and Iron Springs, her heart hadn’t grown hard and intolerant like her husband’s.

Yumiko loved the little girl who she babysat with all her heart and she fawned over River as much as she had done with her own grandson. She smiled seeing the two toddlers together as they grew up together, reaching their teen years, which with good fortune she had been able to see, unlike her husband who had passed away when Haruo was eight years old, seeing just how close they were (they always seemed to gravitate towards each other) and often wondered if the two of them would find each other (in the romantic sense) eventually, they were one soul according to what the Buddhists referred to.

Grandma Yumiko prayed for such a union between the two. Despite Torakazu’s snort of derision for even coming up with such a thought, Yumiko had held out hope.

If fate wished such a union, it would happen. All she could do was guide them to become the adults they would be in the future. Wasn’t there a song in the 70s that said exactly this: Love Will Find A Way?

Grandma Yumiko was a romantic. After Grandfather’s death, Grandma Yumiko had come to live with her daughter and son-in-law who’d had a closer relationship with his mother-in-law than most do. However his wife, Yumiko’s daugher was not happy about that either. But it was the Asian family’s way of doing things. One looked after one’s elders in old age if one was a Nisei.

The Miyagawas nor the Chikamoris were not a very demonstrative family in terms of displays of affection. What their form of affection was…was in the toil and care they took to preserve the stability of their family and to keep their family unit intact, making sacrifices to make sure that their progeny got ahead.

It was very clear to Yumiko that Mayumi, her daughter, had no maternal love for her son whatsoever. All Haruo meant to Mayumi was what he could do to keep Mayumi reigning exalted, what adulations could be showered upon her.- the only reason for producing Haruo was to produce progeny for the sake of fulfilling the dream of her father to see his grandchildren before he’d passed away. So Haruo was just an obligation and not worth emotionally taking care of. As long as the bare minimum of his necessities were taken care of…the Ministry of Social Services (as they were known back then) wouldn’t interfere. Which was why Yumiko had stepped in - she had decided unilaterally that she would provide the emotional support Haruo needed from someone within his family.

The Nisei (second generation) learned from the Issei (first generation - the immigrants): shikata ga nai; deru kugi wa utareru - a fatalistic view of the inevitability of trials and tribulations in life.

It was the Sansei (third generation) in fact that tended to be more outgoing and emotional in public. The ones who made the Yonsei (fourth generation) feel at home.

Haruo was the product of a Issei and a Nisei. His father was an immigrant. Technically that should have made him a Sansei but his mother kept calling him a Nisei-han (2nd Generation and a half) as if he was mathematically torn between two generations and not a part of one or the other and even more so, not a part of the Nikkei Sansei cohort. Not able to express individuality or emotion without recrimination and labouring under the expected constraints of the Generation before him.

Because according to Mayumi’s Generational-mathematics: if two Second Generations could produce a Third Generation then obviously a First Generation Immigrant combined with a second Generation was technically producing just a half generation - (the mathematical gymnastics escapes me).

It had been eleven years since Grandfather had died, a man hardened and embittered by war and internment, knowing only that he’d not been treated as a Canadian should be, he’d always been thought of as an interloping foreigner - the Vancouver Anti-Oriental riots of 1907 which he’d just barely avoided cemented his view on one single point: Never trust a hakujin - it had given him pause and seriously consider returning to Japan, but he opted to stick it out. His wife had loved him, she’d come over to Canada, sight unseen, landing in Vancouver in 1908. and stood by him as they’d worked their way through life, building back again from zero, side by side through joys and losses, easing each other’s pain and a part of her left with him to the other side when he passed on beyond the veil.

Once Torakazu had passed away, Yumiko established herself as a fixture in little community of Maple Ridge helping in the Rotary Club and other community events which helped keep her away from her daughter who threw everything up in the face of her mother that her father never did anything for her, meaning Mayumi, even though they were doing their best during the 40s to try to remain afloat and forget the fact that her father had busted his ass to try to earn everything back that they’d had before everything was taken away from them by WWII and their interment in Iron Springs, Alberta, could not care less about her mother and father's sacrifices. There were some days that he would go out and not come back until late in the evening because he was out there cutting lawns and doing landscaping. And when they had uprooted from Maple Ridge and moved to Sunset Valley, Yumiko again turned her sights towards helping the community through community groups and other activities to assist the less fortunate. But for Mayumi, that wasn’t enough, it was her needs that were most important, her needs that needed fulfilling over anything else.

And Haruo’d had an established friendship circle in his former town of Maple Ridge. But he’d ended up leaving them behind thanks to Mayumi deciding to uproot him for the last three years of his high-school and he’d ended up being moved to Sunset Valley Secondary School. And that meant starting all over again if it wasn’t for River who’d moved from Maple Ridge to Sunset Valley along with her mom after her dad had disappeared from her life at the age of 6. They had been each other’s constants. That was the main reason why he hadn’t decided to become insular and focused on his own self – they’d buoyed each other’s moods over the course of the years.

This was the 80s and most schools had a majority of Canadian students with a European heritage. There was maybe one or two, perhaps at the most three or four Asians in the classroom out of a majority of Caucasian students and Bebe was of mixed descent being both Caucasian on her father’s side and Black on her mother’s side. In Haruo’s case his Asian schoolmate was his cousin Torao who was an year younger than him who was in the same class as River and perhaps the other two who were his maternal cousins which he hardly ever talked to. As long as his parents weren’t talking to them, he wasn’t talking to them either.

If you don’t like it; there’s the door. It was his mother’s favorite ultimatum. She used it anytime he had any objections to being treated badly and he had never taken her up on the offer. Where would he go? How would he survive? Where would he get food? He was underage back then when she started using that threat when he was 13 years old. And if he had left, it wouldn’t be but a few days whereupon he would end up getting picked up by someone with nefarious plans for his future, namely dumping him in a shallow grave in the middle of the forest. This was the time that predators like Clifford Olsen roamed the British Columbia roads looking for easy pickings. People had gone missing and were never seen or heard from again.

And Haruo didn’t want to become one of those statistics, so he put up with what Mayumi was putting him through, but he was reaching his absolute limit of what he was going to tolerate. The threat to leave the house used to terrify an elementary school child, but not any longer. Now that Haruo had graduated from high-school, he was certainly not afraid of just packing his stuff and leaving home. The only question now was where was he going to stay?

His closest friend was still living with her mom, but he wouldn’t want to bunk there. There were too many people in too small of a place. The thing was that he didn’t want to be near anyone; if they got too close they had the capacity to hurt him and he was done being hurt. He was tired of being the punching bag for Mayumi when she got her nose bent out of shape for something he may have done unknowingly that pissed her off for some little-known reason. Oh, no, and she wasn’t going to articulate that reason. Her view was that the useless little turd knew exactly what he’d done to get under her skin and it was his job to guess what it was. Haruo was tired of playing guessing games and had taken enough of her shit that she dished out on what seemed to be a daily basis

But he was now out of school, graduating with what appeared to be the lowest passing grade that one could receive out of the British Columbia school system and in the history of Sunset Valley Secondary School. A fact that his honor-roll mother constantly harped on; the fact that to her, he was an abject failure in academics and by extension, life. That she utterly gave up on him as being anyone noteworthy; deserving nothing but criticism and disdain. Well, it was no surprise as far as Haruo was concerned. His mother had never thought of him as being much anyways. As far as she was concerned, he was a waste of oxygen. He paused a moment looking across the lake up at Summerhill Court seeing the fish jumping...and being surprised at the resentment that it fostered within him. How happy they look with no cares in the world...he thought to himself. At least they have no other worries than an eagle or an osprey swooping down out of the sky and eating them. The rest of the time they can enjoy a life of swimming aimlessly in the pond and feeding on mosquito grubs. He snorted derisively as he sat on a bench in the park staring aimlessly at the pond that had fish.This morning had been another of Mayumi’s screaming matches with him since as of late he decided he was no longer going to put up with the crap that his mother was dishing out at him and he finally turned on his heel and stomped out of the house, slamming the door behind him, cutting off his mother’s “If you don’t like it...there’s the door…” threat in mid-stream. He wasn’t sure if he was even going to go back to his parents’ house. He could only stare at the ground in hopes that some solution would come to him if he thought long and hard about it.

Fiona McIrish’s House, Asilomar, Sunset Valley, BC

As far as River McIrish knew Haruo was not at home when she ended up getting his mother on the phone. Mrs. Chikamori sounded pissed off from what River could discern from the frigid tone that she got in answer.

"I don’t know where he is...and right now, I really don’t care where he is."

River drew back from her phone as if she was burned. Well if that is the case, then I’ll have to go hunt him down myself. She thought acidly. Mrs. Chikamori deserved a good thrashing, but she wasn’t going to be the one to administer it. Frankly as far as River was concerned, Mrs. Chikamori was not worth going to gaol for.

Frankly, if she couldn’t get anything out of Mrs. Chikamori, River was going to go ahead and do what she had to in order to locate Haruo.

He slowly walks over to wear you seem to be rapidly falling into unconsciousness and puts a hand on your shoulder

He calls over a medic even though he knows they cant exactly help you as it's a side effect of your quirk

Which particul healthcare  ar atoms acquire this new property? That&rsq Industrial IoT Router/Gateway  uo;s what the researchers wanted to learn, and the results of their study appeared this week in Nature Materials.

The researchers studied sample heterostructures, each one an extremely thin layer of LAO on an STO substrate. The samples were grown by the group of Harold Hwang of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES), a joint SLAC-Stanford institute. Hwang is an expert in this heterostructure; he’s been studying it for a decade.

SSRL Staff Scientist Jun-Sik Lee said the group relied on one very important property of SSRL’s X-rays: They can be tuned to just the right wavelength to probe the properties of a specific element. In other words, the researchers could use the X-rays to look only at the titanium in the STO slice of the heterostructure, or only at oxygen.

Their investigation pointed to one culprit. “We’ve proved the magnetism comes from the titanium atom,” said Lee, though precisely what is causing this change in a fundamental property is unclear. What’s more, the magnetism arises in what’s called the “ground state” of the titanium atoms, when they are at their lowest energy. In fact, the researchers pursued magnetism in the titanium atoms all the way down to 10 kelvins, 10 degrees above absolute zero.

That’s intriguing, said Lee, because the structure of this magnetic ground state in the titanium of STO is the same structure required for it to be able to transition to a superconductor. This hints at the possibility the LAO/STO interface may exhibit another unconventional behavior: magnetism and superconductivity coexisting, a possibility that, said Lee, “is quite unusual in our conventional understanding of physics.” One of the identifying characteristics of a superconductor is the way it repels magnetic fields.

Unfortunately, the researchers weren’t able to study the magnetic titanium at temperatures low enough to cause the heterostructure to transition to superconductivity. However, their research does support the research of SIMES member Kathryn Moler, published in Nature Physics in 2011, in which her research team detected both superconductivity and magnetism existing at the LAO/STO interface.

Hwang noted that even after almost a decade of investigation by many groups worldwide, this seemingly simple interface continues to generate new surprises. “One of the dreams of our field is the notion of ‘materials by design,'” he said. “We hope that these studies of unexpected emergent phenomena, such as the magnetism here, can lead to an understanding by which we can predictably engineer the properties of artificial heterostructures.”

Chi-Chang Kao, director of SLAC and a co-author of this work, emphasized the close collaboration between the SLAC and Stanford members of the group. “The collaboration started from a series of meetings Harold organized to introduce his group’s research, and is a prime example of the kind of work suited to being tackled together, applying SLAC’s unique resources – such as SSRL – to the scientific problems of the SLAC and Stanford community,” he said. “There are many other examples, and I hope to foster even more of them going forward.”

As for next steps, Lee just laughed. “There are a lot of next steps,” he said. “We’ve passed on a very big question to everyone. We’ve said, ‘OK, we got this result – now we all have a lot of homework to do.'”
