Hello! Unfortunately, Rock Ridge Country Club has closed down due to financial mismanagement and embezzlement. However, your sims now can join an even better club: Cedar Creek Country Club!

I’m excited to announce that I’ve completely reworked the Country Club mod from scratch. This mod holds a special place in my heart as it was the first one I ever made, and I’m thrilled to present it with improved quality and new features.

If you’ve used my previous Country Club mod, you’ll notice both differences and similarities. So, how does the new mod work? Your sim can apply to become a member of Cedar Creek Country Club. This time, the process is more challenging, with the possibility of rejection, requiring more effort both financially and mentally.

However, the application process is streamlined for a smoother experience. Steps to become a member:

Pay Application Fee: This is a 5000 simoleon nonrefundable fee.

Fill out Application Form

Schedule Interview: Choose between two time slots and attend within 24 hours.

Write Letter of Interest

Submit Reference Letters: Cedar Creek requires two reference letters from current members. Your sim can ask a member directly or post on the Cedar Creek community forums. If a member is interested, they may call and offer to write a reference letter. This method is more challenging.

Attend Information Session (Optional): If you have questions about the club or application process, attend an information session available on weekdays.

These elements can greatly increase your chances of getting accepted into the country club.​

Once they become a member and pay the $10,000 initiation fee, your entire household will also gain Cedar Creek membership.

As a Cedar Creek member, there are ongoing fees to pay. You can choose to pay annually (over four weeks) or quarterly (over one week). It’s important to stay on top of these payments to maintain your membership. There are many activities your sim can partake in with family and friends. You can find these options on the computer in the Country Club pie menu.​

Your sim can try to appeal to the country club if they have been rejected, kicked out, or blacklisted. The chances of getting another shot are very low, but high charisma can significantly help.

If they get lucky and are invited to meet with the admissions committee, they have a few hours to attend the meeting and must commit immediately. If they were previously kicked out, they will still need to pay the initiation fee again.

Lot Trait

I have also added a Country Club lot trait with the mod. So as a Cedar Creek member if you don't feel like going to rabbit hole activities you use the country club lot trait and use it on any lot.

I wanted the Country Club lot trait to be customizable, so random members won’t show up automatically; you need to assign members to make it exclusive.

You can assign members by left-shift clicking on the computer and finding the option under the country club pie menu. There are a few social interactions available for different sims at the country club, depending on their roles.

The lot trait is straightforward, but the key is to assign members. You can also remove members using the same method.

Does this mod require any DLC?

No, it does not.

What else do I need for the mod?

Hi Peni, I hope you're doing well!

I came across an old post of yours on Meetmetotheriver's Tumblr where you mentioned that family bin pregnancies (the Ottomas and Crittur families) are broken and need patching.

I'm using Meetmetotheriver's clean templates and stealth neighborhoods, do you know if the would the problem would still persist or if this would affect Brandi and Pascal's pregnancies (like in the case of adding Strangetown or Pleasantview as sub-neighborhoods)?

Also, would Widespot pregnancies also be affected if I added it by this when adding it as a sub-neighborhood?

I have all EPs and SPs, and I was wondering if I still needed to patch my game. If I do, could you let me know where to find the patch(es) please?

I apologize if the answer is obvious, I've been away from Ths Sims 2 for a very long time.

There's several places you can download the official patches. This is one of them:

Sims in subhoods (and the stealth hoods are subhoods) get new IDs when added to the main hood, and prior to the patch the game did not check the ID of the father in the pregnancy controller to make sure they matched. This is why you hear horror stories about Samantha's twins being fathered by dogs etc. The Seasons patch fixed this issue; however, since the check happens when the IDs are changed, it can't fix sims who have already been added to the neighborhood before the patch was applied.

This applies to the disk versions; EA's digital versions come pre-patched. If you're using a CD crack or an electronic version from a pirate site, I suggest you attempt to apply the patches. It won't hurt anything; if the game's already patched, the patch will just refuse to load.

Also, even in a patched game, there's a possibility of alien pregnancies specifically still going wrong, because if the patch checks the ID after the change and finds an extremely low number (like the ID number of Universal Pollination Technician) it sometimes deciding that it must not have been changed, and changes it again.

So in the case of alien pregnancies and any stealth or subhood pregnancies that you've already loaded, you'll need to use an editing tool to assign the pregnancy correctly. I think there are pregnancy mods out there that allow you to fool with the pregnancy controller, but I only know how to do it in SimPE. You open the character file, open the memory tab, and locate the Pregnancy Token in the memories. Clicking on it should open up the pregnancy controller underneath the memory field, and you can make note of the Father's ID number and change it if it's the wrong one. Don't forget to commit before saving.

I just need to word vomit right now.

I've been trying to get assigned a proper psychotherapist since, I don't know. At least September of last year? When the doctor I was seeing was moved from the department I was put in to the other hospital. He was apparently doing psychotherapy with me, despite him not technically supposed to be doing that according to the new doctor I was reassigned to. This doesn't explain everything properly but it's no secret that Ontario/Canada/The fucking world isn't properly able to handle mental health situations and it shouldnt be a surprise that it took more than 2 years to actually get into this specific mental health program after the referral from my family doctor. I've recently found out that it's also not even supposed to be a long term solution, and I'm going to be bounced to another doctor at another hospital for further treatment. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll be assigned back to the first doctor who was moved to there, because he genuinely was an incredible help. I think I'm going to be speaking with someone today about that, I'm not entirely sure to be completely honest.

I recently completed an official assesment that involved going over basically everything I could remember in my life, and even if during pregnancy my mom had any complications. Fun fact, apparently studies have been done that show smoking tobacco during pregnancy is linked to higher chances of the child developing ADHD. At the end of the assesment the Doctor writes up a report, we went over it in case of any corrections being needed, and it's submitted to my electronic file. It was already know that I have ADHD (combined type to be more specific.), Persistent Depressive Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The new addition to this roster was Complex PTSD (in the DSM-5 it falls under "Other Specified Trauma and Stressor Related Disorder"). In hindsight, yea, that checks out.

I've always said I just want to know what's wrong with me so I can get the right kind of treatment, because it's been years of feeling like I'm just slapping bandaids on a wound without properly treating it. I'm very aware things like therapy and coping strategies aren't a one size fits all thing, but when nothing seems to be helping it makes me think there has to be something else wrong with me. Turns out, I was right. Also turns out, it's a lot harder to accept than I'd expected. I expected relief to finally be able to say "this is what's wrong with me!", and maybe to a certain extend I do feel that, but I'm also feeling incredibly angry. Worse is that I also feel tremendous guilt for that anger because I know it's not going to change anything.

I wouldn't have said my childhood was traumatizing. It was rough at times while my Dad was just starting to be treated for his Bi-polar Disorder and I've never denied that being yelled at by him has absolutely impacted me in how I react to people raising their voices and aggression in general. But it's the fact that in trying to raise me to be independent, and also keeping their tobacco and cannabis use "away from me" by leaving me on my own for the vast majority of my childhood ended up doing more harm than good. I do have to mention that I still think the fact that my Dad rigged up a normal video camera to a TV in the basement to act as a video baby monitor back in the early 90s was pretty clever. I was alone but not unattended essentially.

Even as I got older I was still always alone. We didn't have a dinner table for family meals, I always ate in my room and them in the basement. I was happy to be able to take my food back to my computer and eat while I played The Sims. I had my own tv, my own space, and it really did feel like independence. Everyone always thought it was weird when I explained it to them, but I insisted that it was fine and felt like by the time I was in high school I had a great relationship with my parents. Even now thinking back to it, I don't know if I would have wanted to change that. Maybe at the very least having dinners together would have been nice, maybe watching a movie while we ate or something. I don't know.

What starts to make me angry though is when I think of how much cannabis they must have been smoking all throughout my life. They quit tobacco when I was younger, I want to say like 8 or 9 maybe? But my Mom never stopped smoking pot. My Dad said to me once that it was something they'd tried to quit many times but couldn't, and that's what addiction is. My Dad did actually did just straight up stop smoking it between getting a stint installed after his heart attack and going back to the hospital before he passed away. He essentially had one smoke, ended up not being able to breathe and went "nope, guess I'm done with this." It makes me think my Dad could have stopped any time if he really wanted to, but my Mom was the one really addicted. It's clear she is, because living in her basement I've been exposed to it so damn much in these last couple of years we've been here.

That's one of my main points of anger too. No matter how many times I try to explain to her the physical effect the cannabis is having on me, it doesn't seem to register as serious to her. I don't know if she is genuinely not understanding, or just trying to ignore it and convince her self it's not as big of a deal as it is. This makes me think how much of my childhood was also spent with her being high? I was home most with my Dad because he worked night shifts. My Mom was working a typical 9-5. I don't want to put blame squarely on my Mom for the cannabis use but it's extremely hard for me to not do so. The times I can recall smelling smoke from the basement despite knowing they quit cigarettes were all when they were both home. I don't know if my Dad smoked when he was home with just me. I honestly don't think he did. Despite how rough things were when he was struggling with his own mental health, he was an incredible Dad. And this isn't what I wanted to vent about, but now I'm crying and fuck, I miss him.

I don't know if I only started to notice my Mom's major shortcomings because I'm an adult now too, or if maybe they were always there and my Dad just balanced them out? Or maybe it's because she no longer has to parent, and only has herself and her happiness to focus on. But it's so incredibly frustrating to deal with because if she was any other person in my life, I truthfully would have distanced myself from her. I truly believe she's also got ADHD and is struggling with that, because there are signs that I know from my own ADHD. She doesn't want to get tested, and says she can't afford the medication anyways and absolutely fair on that part, it's not cheap without a drug benefits plan. But knowing this, I've tried to give her advice on how to mitigate some of the most frustrating aspects that she's vocalized being and issue and also become an issue for others like myself and my partner. But it seems she just brushed them off and continues to struggle with the same problems and then gets upset that they're still problems.

The simplest example is just setting a timer or alarm. She gets frustrated that she ends up running late every day, it was part of the reason she'd be fired from her last job as well. She's told me she loses track of time and then has to mad dash around to leave. I know this because every single time it's incredibly loud above me, upsets Oy (this is a whole other thing I don't want to get into.) tremendously, and worries me that she's going to get in trouble for being late at this job too. I also have this problem and I know I do, so I actively have to set multiple timers to make sure I know when I need to stop whatever I'm doing, get ready to leave, and then get out the door on time. Sometimes it takes only 1 alarm, sometimes I make sure to set 2. But I know this is a problem I have and that is an annoying but effective solution to it. I've shown her how to quickly set up timers on her phone, and even shown her how to ask her Google Home devices to send reminders or alarms. It's literally as simple as saying "Hey Google, set a timer for 45 minutes/set an alarm for 2:45."

I've stressed this to her especially when she does laundry, because for that she needs to come down into our space to do it. Which is fine, obviously, but when 2 loads of laundry should at most take 2-3 hours but takes the entire day because she forgets about them it becomes frustrating. We have to block off the door so Oy doesn't get upset that suddenly someone is in our area, so we tend to just avoid going out to the "kitchen" (The mini fridge with milk in it, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster oven located in the same area as the laundry machines.) until she is done. This also means remembering to NOT lock the door so she doesn't have to fight with it as she comes and goes, making sure if we need to let Oy outside she's not in there or outside, and just generally trying to be as out of the way of her for that time period as possible. Problem is when she forgets about it, we spent hours in waiting mode expecting her to finish it only to be sent a text asking to start the load again because she forgot. I've told her to just set a timer for 45 minutes and not to dismiss it until she is actually in the laundry room. If your timer goes off and you can't immediately stop what you're doing to go get the laundry, add 10 minutes. Then when that one goes off again, go down or add 10 minutes. It's annoying, but it works. I've dismissed my timer for the wash only to immediately forget I needed to get up and swap it over so many times it's not even funny, so I get it. But you can't just keep getting frustrated that you forget stuff and make no efforts at all to help yourself not forget. Especially when it's also inconveniencing others around you. It's even more frustrating when those you are inconveniencing go above and beyond to not inconvenience you.

During one of the times the hubs was asked to pick my Mom up from work, she was complaining about how no one has common courtesy anymore and only thinks about themselves. Typically she will complain about something or other that happened during her day on the drive home and he'll politely nod and listen, but the irony of her genuinely complaining about that was too damn much to just tune out. I can't remember what he'd said in return, but it apparently just went right over her head and she continued on. I don't think my Mom is a bad person, which might be hard to believe from all this rambling. I think a lot of it has to do with her generational mindset (born '62). While she's not as bad as some, it's still frustrating to try and explain how some of the things she does are causing serious mental distress to me in particular, but also probably my partner. And absolutely my dog, but again, that's a story for another time.

To loop this back around, I've been finding my self increasingly angry at a lot of things she has been doing, or not doing lately. I wonder if she was like this when I was a kid and I didn't notice. Did it contribute to the trauma? I know now that I have such a strong sense of injustice when people do things "against the rules" and aren't punished for it because I was terrified to do things wrong as a kid. So when my own Mother does things "against the rules" it makes me literally furious. I want to scream "You taught me this was wrong! How dare you disregard that for yourself!"

I know that pointing this anger at her and screaming this is all your fault isn't fair. Not only because I was raised by both my Mom and Dad, so it was a joint effort, but because it would accomplish nothing. I don't even know if I want to tell her I've been diagnosed with Complex PTSD because of childhood neglect. I don't think that will help anything. It's not going to change the past and I honestly don't think it would change anything going forward. She knows they screwed that up. At least, I assume so. I don't remember if it was her or my Dad who'd told me, but I do specifically remember being told that they wanted to teach me to be independent and be able to do things on my own, not relying on others for comfort and support but admitting that backfired and was the wrong choice. So is it really going to benefit anyone to bring that up and remind her she failed as a parent during a critical part of my development? I really don't think it will.

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I need to confront her about it for my own healing. I know I always put the feelings of others before my own, and would rather make myself uncomfortable or unhappy then upset someone else. I'm sure it's half the reason so much of the things my Mom does bother me so much. Because I'd rather just say "Sure, that's okay" when something is wrong than be 'rude' and say "Actually no, that's not okay." What makes me even more mad about that though is that my partner is the same way. If my Mom asks him to do something, no matter how much more of an unconvinced it might be for him than it would be for her or her partner to do, he will always say yes. Both of us feel obligated to do so as well, because she's given up her basement for us when we would have otherwise been homeless. For him even more so, because she was the reason we were able to get him his dream car. I know he feels like he owes her every favor she asks, no matter how odd or annoying it is, despite the fact that all she did in relation to the car was sign the papers.

I genuinely hate how much anger I've been feeling towards my Mom in these last few months specifically. Even before I was officially diagnosed with cPTSD and that made me start questioning other things. I don't want to think of my Mom like this. I don't want to be here.

I hope that this person who I'm going to be having a phone call with today, or I guess also possibly tomorrow because she said Thursday or Friday in the email, is who's going to be transitioning me to the other hospital for the recommended therapies based on my diagnosis. I'm tried of all the bandaid solutions and just want to do proper psychotherapy. It shouldn't be this hard to be just put on the damn waiting list for long term care. I've said it before and I'll say it, it genuinely seems like unless I do something to put myself at risk, nothing I say is taken seriously. It feels like I need to do something to put myself into the hospital for my mental health struggles to be valid. I'm not going to, and if for some reason you've read this far please don't do that either. The best we can do is keep jumping through the hoops. Even if it means dragging ourselves though them because we're too exhausted to even step though the hoops. Eventually someone's going to help. At least that's the bit of hope I've chosen to cling to.

I'm tired. I don't know why I typed this. I don't know why I still feel like I should post it. I'm probably going to because fuck it? I need to go to the dollar store and get some bags for the soap I made that my Grandma ordered. I don't know what the weather's like though, and it's probably way too hot for me to walk up anyways.

I want to check in on my friend too, I know she has therapy today and this week was going to be rough for her. I just didn't want to bother her if she needed time to process and all that. But maybe we can get a warm beverage and make each other feel better.

Prison Labor in Flyover Country

In Flyover Country by Tim Maughan, the main character works at a prison factory making iPhones. The story shows how prisoners are forced to work for big companies while being treated unfairly. One emotional part of the story is when the main character helps a family communicate by switching SIM cards in phones, allowing a prisoner to see pictures of his wife and kids. This makes us think about the real life issue of prison labor and how companies benefit from it while prisoners don’t benefit at all.

What Is Prison Labor?

Prison labor is when people in prison are made to work, often for very little money. Many companies use prison workers to make products because it’s cheap. In the U.S., prisoners can be paid as little as a few cents per hour. Prisoners make things like furniture, clothing, and even electronics for big companies to benefit from while they struggle to financially survive while being locked up. As The Marshall Project states, since wages are so low, many incarcerated people can't afford basic necessities like soap, toothpaste, or even phone calls to their families. Most of their earnings go toward overpriced items in prison commissaries or paying off court fees. Some prisoners work long hours just to afford a pack of ramen noodles.

In many U.S. prisons, incarcerated individuals are compelled to work under threat of severe penalties. Those who refuse assignments may face punishments such as solitary confinement, loss of visitation rights, or denial of sentence reductions. For example, as stated in CTAS Tennessee, in Tennessee, state law permits sheriffs to impose solitary confinement or other disciplinary actions on prisoners who decline to work. This coercive system, rooted in the 13th Amendment's exception clause, has led to legal challenges and growing calls for reform.

How Flyover Country Shows Prison Labor

In the story, Barry sees how the prisoners have no control over their lives. They are forced to work in factories, making products for people on the outside. The prisoners don’t get paid fairly, and they are treated as if they aren’t real workers. This is similar to real life, where many prisoners do hard jobs but don’t get the same rights as other workers.

The Problem with Prison Labor

Some people argue that prison labor helps prisoners learn job skills. But others say it is unfair because companies make a lot of money while prisoners barely get anything. According to The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), many prisoners work in dangerous conditions and can’t say no to the job. They don’t have the same protections as workers outside of prison.

Incarcerated workers create billions of dollars in value, yet they have almost no labor rights and are paid little to nothing for their work. Many are forced into dangerous jobs that don’t prepare them for life after prison. The Economic Policy Institute claims that this is especially bad in the South, where states rely on free or underpaid prison labor to run expensive prisons and produce goods and services. This system has deep roots in slavery, continuing the legacy of convict leasing and debt peonage. Even today, some private businesses profit from prison labor while local workers lose jobs. 

Flyover Country makes us think about prison labor and how unfair it can be. The story shows that prisoners are used for their labor while companies profit. It also reminds us that behind every product we buy, there might be workers prisoners or not who aren’t treated fairly and are going through the worst while being away from their loved ones. This is an important issue that more people should know about.

If you have NPCC installed, the new sages may be replaced with random townies. I’m not sure why that is nor how to fix it, but I’ve uploaded their tray files so if you’d like to assign them the role yourself, you can!

Melody is looking forward to going to college soon. She can't wait to be more independent and truly dedicate all her time to painting and studying about fine arts. Getting reunited with her only friend Gavin (whom she also has a crush on) is definitely an upside too.

Gavin goes to Electronics Supercenter with Melody to help her pick out a smartphone. The Tinkers' toy store has been doing fairly well recently, so Wanda and Stephen could set aside some money for a cellphone for their daughter.

After the shopping trip, Melody and Gavin spend the rest of their Sunday afternoon hanging out at Hunter's Park.

Gavin: College is not all sunshine and rainbows though... The dorm can get annoyingly noisy and the assignments just feel endless. Ah well, I guess it makes a difference if you truly love what you're studying and know what you wanna do with your life.

Melody: I still can't wait for next year. I'm sure the dorms aren't even that bad.

Gavin: I don't know about others, but ours is pretty chaotic... I hope you get into a better one.

Melody: But I wanna go to Sim State Dormitories! It's the most affordable one at SSU, it's close to the Faculty of Arts building, plus... there's you and David, at least I know you guys, it's better than being surrounded by total strangers.

Gavin: ...and then the little ones got adopted, and suddenly it was the six of us kids. After all maybe the dorms are nothing compared to what our parents had to put up with some days. But they loved us, and I took that for granted before we lost them.

Melody: Wow... I wish I knew what it feels like to have siblings.

Gavin: I wish I knew what it feels like to have biological parents... Better yet, alive biological parents... I know your mum and dad are a little goofy, but make sure you show them enough gratitude and appreciation while you still can.

One of the first things Laura Miele did when she became chief studios officer of Electronic Arts Inc. three years ago was to gather 19 video game influencers in a conference room. “What do you want me to hear? Lay it on me,” she recalls asking them. “One guy sitting at the corner of the table, he just said, ‘I don’t understand why you don’t give players what they’re asking for.’ ”

It’s something many gamers have wondered about EA for years. The $40 billion company, one of the biggest in gaming, is responsible for Battlefield, Madden NFL, and other megahit franchises. But many gamers have long seen EA as a necessary evil, resenting the direction in which it took some games and bristling at its aggressive attempts to extract money by charging extra for digital items in games that cost as much as $70 upfront. This dissatisfaction was no secret in 2018: Gamers spent their days filling up Reddit and other message boards with free advice for EA—but many felt its decision-makers weren’t listening.

EA’s leadership knows it has to improve that relationship, and Miele is a key player in its efforts to do so. Her focus group asked for new content for Star Wars Battlefront II and requested new types of games. Miele quickly assigned 70 people to the Battlefront development project, which dramatically improved its net promoter score, a measure of how likely people are to recommend the game. She also prompted EA to create a skateboarding game and committed to reintroducing its college football franchise, the two genres at the top of the influencers’ list.

In a sense, the guy at the meeting became a stand-in for all of EA’s long-suffering customers in Miele’s eyes. “I wanted to do right by this player,” she says.

As chief studios officer, Miele manages 6,000 staffers and thousands of contractors globally. She oversees EA’s 24 studios, where she makes personnel decisions and sets strategy, and she’s reshaped how the company uses analytics to create and market its games.

In the process she may have become the most powerful woman in gaming. In a 2019 International Game Developers Association survey, fewer than 30% of the more than 1,100 respondents were women, and few if any hold a more central role at such an important company. “It’s a tough place for a woman,” says Peter Moore, who was Miele’s boss when he was EA’s chief operating officer. “It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but she battled her way through.”

Proving good intentions is more important for EA than ever, as the business model of gaming continues to shift in ways that have the potential to alienate customers. Like its rivals, the company is increasing its focus on free-to-play games, making money through sales of digital products such as outfits and weapons for characters.

There are signs it’s succeeding. Apex Legends, EA’s free-to-play hero shooter game, has posted more than $1 billion in sales since it was first published in 2019, and it continues to grow. “The way to succeed with free-to-play games like that is to listen to and engage your customer base and earn their loyalty through incremental purchases,” says Doug Clinton, managing partner of the venture capital firm Loup Ventures, who says Miele deserves much of the credit for Apex Legends. “It feels like a proof point for her that the company is adapting well beyond traditional disk sales.”

Miele, 51, was born in San Francisco but grew up on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. She got her start in games—the kind that require a board—during family nights, when she pitted herself against her brother in Monopoly, Clue, Yahtzee, and backgammon. While attending the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, she worked at architectural companies. By the time she dropped out she’d moved on from receptionist positions to more senior roles, while gaining a reputation for organizing lunch-hour card games with her co-workers.

Miele landed a job as a project manager at Westwood Studios, a video game developer best known for Command and Conquer, in 1996. She eventually took over all marketing for its parent company, Virgin Interactive.

It wasn’t always a hospitable atmosphere: Miele remembers her colleagues expecting her to take notes at meetings, then clean up afterward. “That is just not something I would do today,” she says. “I adapted a lot because I was so passionate about what I was doing. I found my voice along the way.”

When EA acquired Westwood in 1998, she stayed on. At the time, the company did revenue forecasting by looking at sales data once a month and putting together spreadsheets by hand. Miele was tasked with developing more advanced analytics. She hired a group of data analysts, nicknamed “the Jedi,” and had them build EA’s first statistical regression models to examine sales trends, seasonality, and preorders. It took almost two years to put the system in place, but it overhauled the company’s business processes, and executives were soon using it to determine how to invest in advertising and promotions. “I loved how data and analytics can inform your judgment and your gut instinct,” Miele says.

Miele also decided to make one major break with EA’s existing business practices. In 2011 about 80% of game advertising budgets were spent on TV ads. But she saw how much time gamers spent online and decided to spend the bulk of the ad budget for Battlefield 3 on digital, downplaying other types of ads and cutting the TV ad budget to only 30%.

Messing around with the plan for Battlefield 3 was a good way to make people nervous. Miele remembers two executives calling her in for a meeting and demanding to know why they weren’t seeing billboards for the game as they drove in to the office. “It was scary for me, too, and I don’t blame our executives questioning me on that,” she says. But the game ended up being EA’s fastest-selling, moving more than 5 million copies in its first week. From that point, Miele’s marketing strategy became the standard for the company.

When EA signed a 10-year deal with Walt Disney Co. in 2013, Miele became Star Wars general manager. In 2014 she took over publishing operations, marketing, and other key areas, first in the North American region, then globally in 2016. At the time, the game industry was moving from physical disks to digital downloads, transforming its relationship with retail partners such as Walmart Inc. and Best Buy Co.

Miele was in charge of smoothing things over, explaining that EA would start competing with them for customers even as the retailers accounted for the largest portion of the revenue. “I never said to them, ‘Hey, see you later, we are moving on,’ ” she says. “It was, ‘How can we move forward together?’ ” EA began making physical cards with digital credits that its retail partners could sell at their stores, allowing them to share in the revenue from digital sales.

EA’s studios are spread around the globe, and Covid-19 altered Miele’s routine radically. “It was a very difficult year, and I’m really proud about how our company showed up,” she says. “I considered myself a wartime leader last year. You had to get in a bunker with everybody.”

Days became an endless progression of Zoom calls. To keep up with gamers, Miele started spending evenings listening to Clubhouse chats while answering work emails. Because she hasn’t been on the road, she’s also had more time to dine at home and play board games or Apex Legends and The Sims with her 16-year-old twins. As the pandemic retreats in the U.S., her schedule might change, but she still envisions providing more flexibility to her employees to work from home and office. “I do think we’re going to have a different work environment as we go forward,” she says.

Miele is itching to get back to the studio visits. She’s helping steer EA further toward smartphones. The company plans to release mobile versions of Apex Legends globally this year and spent $2.1 billion in April for Glu Mobile Inc., a mobile game publisher, while also preparing the next releases in its existing franchises. “I think the next Battlefield and the mobile shooter games, along with how successful the M&As come out will be key litmus tests of her management this year,” says Matt Kanterman, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. “Her scope is clearly rising.”

Fear was something of an old hat to Winter. Memory skips left her anxious, quarantine duty made her anxious, being cut off from Rexy, her frames and the network made her anxious, the anxiety making the memory skips worse made her anxious...

But the fear she'd been living with for the last month blew all of that out of the water.

Ra-1, the fist of Rasputin, the Dragon Ascendant, had personally sent her a message to say that if she didn't start doing exactly what he told her, he'd activate the code-black killcodes built into her Rasputin Exo body, and blow her Exomind into electronic spaghetti. After all, she was wired into the Charlemagne network, and had a documented set of fears he could abuse. She'd gather confidential data for him, she'd send him warnings of Charlemagne's actions, and she'd allow his scientists to try and duplicate Rexy, and the fear of final death would keep her in line.

But.

But but but.

Rasputin's records of her had been accurate...once. Yes, she was still afraid, but her body was no longer a Rasputin model. It couldn't be; that whole area was considered an infohazard now, and her last body was never coming home. And without that final threat, she'd found the courage to do something...stupid.

So here she was, on Ra's flagship in deep space with Charlemagne's blessing. She'd met up with lance troops a few times for debriefs, but recently she'd been allowed to spend time on the flagship itself, ready for Ra to send her where he wanted her. But that same set of interface skills that had allowed her access to Charli's files had also granted access to just a few of Ra's.

Winter paced back and forth in the tiny cabin she’d been assigned. She wasn’t sure if it was some kind of power conservation action, but the light down here barely cut through the shadows. She could have headed up to one of the main decks where things were a bit less claustrophobic, but Ra’s soldiers were everywhere there, and being the only blue-lit Exo on the entire ship guaranteed her the kind of attention that, if things went wrong today, could get her killed. She checked the ship’s clock fruitlessly. Somewhere out there, right now, Ra himself was boots-down on Riis. The data scraps she’d found didn’t say why, or for how long, but there was no question that he was just a little vulnerable right now.

Just a little would have to be enough; her Guardian contacts, who she’d affectionately nicknamed Fireteam Fuzzy, had cut their way through all kinds of monsters since she’d met them, and she’d made damn sure they knew exactly how dangerous he would be. She’d helped Fuzzy find their targets and coordinated some bounties for them down in the Quarantine zone, and when she’d outlined her proposal, they’d agreed to pass it on without question. It could have been typical guardian bravado, but she knew they’d lost friends to Ghostbuster rounds in the attack on the farm a while back. Maybe they actually trusted her.

Maybe that trust was going to get them killed.

Pushing that thought away and herself to her feet, Winter shoved her way past the door and started striding away towards the lifts. One way or another, with the Ira Terra still out in the styx, any news of the strike would take time to arrive, if her information had even been good in the first place. If she was going to stew in uncertainty, she may as well do it somewhere that felt less like a prison cell. Ra may have been a terrifying, merciless, wannabe-tyrant, but the facilities he provided for his troops were actually first rate. She’d find a sim-station no-one was using and throw herself into some story until the guillotine had, one way or another, dropped.

She had made it to the first brightly lit corridor of the barracks floor when her whole body exploded into pain.

Protocols cut in, protecting her mind from the overwhelming agony, partitioning and quarantining it. The feeling of burning alive dipped, sank, then seemed to drain from her whole body into solely her left forearm. When she could see again, she was crumpled against the wall of the corridor, chest heaving, digital heart still pumping on overdrive. It felt unpleasantly like the worst of the memory blips-she was in pain, alone, with no idea why or what to defend against. She cast her eyes down and to her left, and just like with the blips, her circumstances slotted into place. Set into the casing of her arm, where her network interface and uplink were supposed to be, were a smoking ruin of burned and self-destructing circuits. Her only remaining Rasputin hardware, her connection to her frames, to Rexy, to the ship’s system.

Ra-1 had just tried to kill her.

Oh, if she had thought she’d been afraid before, it paled in comparison to the terror that swallowed her now. It felt like her heart was going to burst out through her chest. There was no way her guardians would have told him she was responsible, right? They knew she was undercover, and even in the heat of the fight, he could have sent the kill codes at any time. They’d keep her secret...

...until their dying breaths.

There was a crackling noise that initially failed to cut through the panic, until it resolved unto the familiar voice of the great warlord, and even as the announcement rang out the ship’s engines powered into life and rumbled the flagship into thunderous motion.

“Attention, warriors of the Broken Lance. A guardian strike team has just made an attempt on my life, using information given to them by a traitor within our ranks, Winter-1. The guardians have been dealt with, and I have already ensured she has been rewarded as a traitor deserves. However, an example must still be made. Have her remains gathered and waiting for me upon my return to the Terra. Her masters shall have her broken husk returned to them. A commendation to the squad who has her corpse in my office upon my arrival. Ra out.”

Oh.

Hmm.

Ah, ok.

Winter was pretty sure she’d just lost a minute or two by the time her awareness came back to her. She still felt like she was about to die (fully independent of the hundreds of trained and eager killers probably now closing in on her position) but the freeze instinct was graduating to flight. She had an exit strategy, at Charlemagne’s insistence. It wasn’t a good strategy, but the warmind had explicitly ordered her to try. She reached out with her interface to the subroutine she’d left running on the ship’s server, and-

Ah. Her eyes once again turned to the sparking, melted mess where her interface was supposed to sit. It felt like one of her senses had been scooped out; a huge, gaping wound where the network was supposed to be. Nevermind just the escape protocol, without the access codes built into it, ninety five percent of the systems in the ship would no longer recognise her as a person, including the ones required to log into any network access point on the ship. She knew where her escape protocol was located, and could theoretically trigger it if she could reach an unsecured terminal.

But right now she could already hear tramping boots approaching from the barracks and she had no choice but to run.

She lost count of how many times she blipped as she led a desperate game of cat and mouse through the guts of the ship. The Ira Terra was bigger than the Stultorum had been, back when she’d served upon it, but if the ship ran about the same, the cargo deck mid-flight would be on skeleton crew with nobody caring if an unsecured terminal was technically a security violation. So she kept heading down and back, focusing on that one thought to the exclusion of all else. When she blipped in this time, she was halfway down a corridor created by two shipping containers, moving towards the illuminated sign of a shift breakroom. She took the next step and immediately fell nearly to the floor, sprawling gracelessly and nearly braining herself on the container. Oh-she’d been shot. That explained why her right side and upper leg were one big mess of static and pins-and-needles. She supported herself on the side of the crate and limped forward, conscious of the shouts and stomping boots echoing from somewhere in the distance behind her. She made it to the door, shouldering it open, almost collapsing with relief when her flickering vision was met with the friendly glow of an open terminal. She immediately dragged herself to it, closing the chat and shipwide alert windows to immediately start digging for her protocol.

She must have been five seconds in when she heard the shatter of breaking crockery behind her.

Slowly turning to face the noise, Winter looked into the eyes of the exo washing the dishes in the kitchenette, set into the corner of the breakroom. For a moment, both were still, surprised, the other Exo’s hand still in the air where it had been holding the coffee mug a moment ago. Then his eyes flicked to the screen of the terminal, where a moment ago had been the bounty on the only blue-lit Exo on the ship.

She didn’t even question trying to engage him. She whirled back to the screen, fingers flying as she desperately raced to run the command. The man had no weapons, probably no combat training, but he crashed into her from behind and her leg went out from under her, skull bouncing off the frame of the screen as he tried to wrap his arms around hers, voice bellowing that he’d found her. She was so close it burned, even more intense than the pain. She gripped one of her hands with the other and shoved it over her shoulder as hard as she could, outstretched thumb punching into his optic and causing a very human scream that no amount of mechanical upgrades would prevent. His grip slackened, and she pulled herself out of his arms and high enough to see the screen.

There were shouts behind her, the sounds of guns being brought to attention, the exo at her feet was tightening his grip again, and her vision was fading into black on the edges.

She hit the last key on the screen.

Everything went white, then black, silent and cold.

It was maybe ten seconds before the first ship thundered across her line of sight in the perfect silence of vacuum, the many supporting ships of Ra's fleet rushing to keep up with the flagship as it finished positioning itself for the jump. Even its coasting speed had brought it far enough away from Winter to render it a tiny dot in the distance, before there was a flash of light and the ships were gone.

Her transmat had been a random distance in a random direction, untraceable, and searching for her would delay the ship's travel to pick up Ra. She'd be left behind in the void, passing beyond its signal jamming, allowing the beacon hidden in her circuits to finally begin transmitting. A waiting friendly vessel would be on route to pick her up, provided the fleet hadn't shot it out of the sky.

Which left Winter here, curled in a ball as the moisture on her clothes crystallised. In theory, Exos were built to be vacuum-resistant, but she had a feeling that resistance didn't account for there being two bleeding holes in her dermis.

The thought drifted through her brain as her senses shut down one by one:

Who would claim her first: the cold, the bleeding, or her rescue?

She found herself thinking that she didn't want to die again.

Slowly, the black faded back to white.

Working on World of Warcraft was a once in a lifetime opportunity—it was, and still is, an amazing product, and I got to be a part of a team of super talented, dedicated game makers. I feel so fortunate to have started my design career alongside some of the best designers I’ve ever known. The Sims team was also an incredible team to work with. They taught me so much about what it means to understand and serve your audience well.

This is a hard question to answer! If I had to choose, I’d say that working on The Sims Social has been the most impactful to my career. When I arrived at Playfish, I was suddenly faced with challenges I had never encountered before on any other project. Before I could even get my bearings, I had to jump in and simultaneously figure out where I fit in on the team as well as partner closely with other leads to create and implement a development process that worked for everyone. Feeling grateful for the help they offered me, I knew I wanted to be that for someone else, a “pay it forward” sort of thing. I regularly volunteer my time with a couple of different organizations, and I absolutely love it. I find the enthusiasm of those I mentor so inspiring. It reminds me of how I felt when I first started out.

Is there a particular woman in the gaming industry that inspires you?

If I’m being honest, I can’t choose one. I’m inspired by all women in games. The game industry is a male-dominated field, so women that wish to enter it often have the additional challenge of proving themselves worthy of being there. I wish this wasn’t the case, and it is changing, but that’s the current state of things.

Women that choose to pursue a career in games tend to be very passionate and dedicated. They want to make games, and nothing is going to stop them. I feel lucky to know and have worked with so many creative, hard-working, and brilliant women. I’m inspired by their success and by their determination to do what they love.

What advice would you give to aspiring women who are just starting out or wanting to join the industry?

1. Play. It sounds obvious, but the first piece of advice I’d offer is to play games. People that work in games tend to play games and talk about games—a lot. Keeping current with industry trends is part of the job. So play a wide range of games of different genres on multiple platforms. Develop your own opinions about what works and what doesn’t. Why is one game so successful while another game fails?

2. Learn. Build relevant skills for the job you one day wish to have. If you want to be an artist, make art, every day.
