I FINALLY DID IT!

I made a battery-powered soldering iron!

I have had these chonky LiPo batteries laying around for a While, and now I’m doing something not only useful with them, but I’m actually upgrading my tool arsenal!

For those of you who just understand the serious dangers at play when using this kind of battery with this level of jank, or who are nerds like me, the cable I built to connect the iron to the battery has a built-in fuse (4A, interchangeable, the batteries max rated safe output is 100A (10,000mah x .001 x 10c), but I don’t fully trust it.), and a voltage readout on the side, so I know when I need to stop and recharge.

This will allow me to solder outside, instead of continuing to fill my small apartment with lead fumes. (I know there is lead-free solder, but I inherited lead solder along with the battery, and it’s not a high enough priority to swap out yet.)

Also, the battery looks much puffier in the picture than it is in real life. It’s just the lighting. I’ve already taken 4 of its puffier siblings to batteries+ for safe disposal.

I actually CAN'T tune out stimuli. Its just A Thing. I've never been able to do it in my whole life because my brain Just Isn't Wired Like That

So when I say "Can you not smoke here?" or "Please only get unscented trash bags" or "I really need you to be using headphones, please" I am expressing a Very Real Need and if you're just going to ignore that I have to resign myself to the fact that I just can't trust you.

lmao rui canonically solders without eye protection or proper ventilation in short sleeves. his face is like directly above the soldering point, you KNOW he’s inhaling those fumes. can’t be sure what kind of solder he’s using so it’s not necessarily something super toxic, but a fair amount of solder has lead and some solder has rosin, and he’s touching that shit barehanded and getting fumes in his face. yum.

With software simulations well underway, it's about time to test the hardware for the bipedal robotic walking system. 10x MG 996R servos, a 1080p camera and combination accelerometer/gyroscope currently being tested with the Raspberry Pi 5 shell with Adafruit servo hat. My soldering is pretty awful, but managed to get it to an acceptable standard by the end. Once the micro-hdmi to hdmi cable arrives I'll be able to get it attached to a monitor to do some testing procedures and ensure everything works as expected.

Robot girl, finally back online after a year and a half, looking at the newly outfitted soldering station. There's a lot more tools on it than there were when she last closed her eyes: Inspection microscopes, hot air reflow, EEPROM programmers, logic analyzers, thermal cameras and regulated power supplies. She starts to tear up when she sees the video history of her partner (and repairperson): months and months of electronic tutorials, starting simple ("what is a circuit?") and towards the end there's PCB design classes and CCC videos about reverse engineering secure processor firmware.

"You did all this, for me?" she asks, her voice sounding different from how she remembers it, lacking the stutterglitch and 8-bit audio harshness. Her partner smiles. "I thought I'd lost you... I couldn't live with that. I had to!"

She hugs them in a pile of spare parts, servos moving smoothly for the first time in decades, pressure sensors finally accurate enough to hold them without risk of crushing them.

Sometimes, love is stored in the soldering iron.
