Proposal for the regeneration of a neighborhood in Agua Azul District in Downtown Guadalajara.

Over the course of my last two semesters as an architecure student, I, along with my team, developped an urban regeneration for the Agua Azul District in Downtown Guadalajara. 

The making of this proposal involved on-site work and research with which it was possible to come up with a solution to restore the streets while incorporating sustainable and environmental improvements that could potentially help rebuild the social structure and reconnect San Carlos to Agua Azul park and surrounding areas. 

Furthermore; two multi-family housing projects with low environmental impact were also designed in order to provide affordable and decent housing, promoting the repopulation of this neighborhood.

I mean essentially the problem is, here’s this amazing experience that everyone ideally should be able to have at least a few times, if not often, but there’s vastly limited capacity.

IDK, to me good themed entertainment shouldn’t be a luxury experience. And good themed entertainment is also woven into the fabric of the community. One of the things that make Disneyland so special is it’s attention to quality and the engagement it’s had with local fans over the decades. In many ways it plays the role of a community park infinitely better than actual community parks do (yay government failures). Hell I’ve made the argument before that one of the main reasons Disneyland succeeds at all is the fact that it’s placed in Southern California where essentially large swaths of the city are devoid of any pleasurable environments, architecure, pedestrian space, or community gathering areas. And when I see examples of local establishments doing themed entertainment and being community gathering places it always makes my heart tingle with joy. Like I recently stumbled upon Clifton’s in downtown Los Angeles, and to me it’s just the perfect example of what themed entertainment should do. (For those unaware Clifton’s is this marvelous cafeteria in downtown LA that spans several Floors and is this space that blends traditional architecture with a forest. Not only does it serve a variety food at all hours, it houses some oddities and cool displays, several bars, holds events, swing dancing - it really is like a micro Disneyland). But to me it’s an example of exactly what the world lacks but craves. We as humans literally to have the ability to build and live in any environment we want and yet we as a culture have decided to build this gigantic, uninspired, soulless glut of concrete and isolate ourselves. Themed entertainment offers an alternative that says why don’t we build the environments of our dreams and connect with each other.

Idk to me, as much as I love rides and shows and storytelling, this is the piece of what made and makes Disneyland so special. It wasn’t just designed purely as a vacation spot or piece of theatre. It was designed to be a true spot of gathering and community - hell there were ball fields and picnic areas when it opened. It was a vision of what urban space could be if we bloody just had the motivation to try - harkening back to the beautiful and vibrant parks of the early 1900s (such as MacArthur Park - right around the corner from where I live, and who’s history has fascinated and inspired me). Good themed entertainment has always been this fusion of great public space with theatrical experiences. And I think the great public space aspect is falling by the wayside now.

Anyway, my point in all this, is that when thinking about crowds and prices of good themed entertainment experiences, especially in California, it occurs to me that while there might be ways to spread them more evenly and make it more fair and preserve the pleasant experience of an undercrowded Park - what it really is an indication of just how much people want this kind of experience in their lives and can’t get it. In Southern California the reason why Disneyland prevails and demands such higher prices than Universal, Knotts, or Six Flags isn’t just because of its largely superior attractions, but because it’s use of urban design and beautiful environments is sooooo far ahead of anything else around. I guarantee you there are tons of people that go there merely to have a nice meal and walk around the river.

So to me that indicates that the solution to the crowding problem really would involve a huge shift in the landscape of our culture. There’s a huge pent up demand for pleasing urban spaces, pleasing community spaces, interesting environments. The world needs drastically more themed entertainment. The world needs drastically more good, human-centered, design. The world needs more beauty and focus on quality. But things done authentically, with meaning, not just a churned out assemblage of rainforest cafes. Without the caring about community it doesn’t work.

Anyway, these thoughts aren’t entirely coherent, but I think there’s something there.

Rooted in a time honoured tradition of experimental houses Mokki 2020 follows an ancient tradition of experimental houses by completely abandoning traditional ways of building that has worked well over centuries, and instead creates something new based on theoretical knowledge, childish enthusiasm and unfounded confidence. This is why Mokki 2020 has abandoned eaves, and is built on no sort of foundation. Indeed it is almost like the ”architect” has decided that the moist, swampy ground will not cause any problems. In addition to this Mokki 2020 is also definitely too small, in a fashionable micro cabin sort of way. The only sensible solution of the building would in fact be the pent roof, but even this can in no way be considered jaw droppingly exceptional. But Mokki 2020 looks great, which is enough. Because if Kasper Stromman gets his way, we all will be wearing practical boiler suits in the future, which will solve the problem of keeping warm while at the same time holding mosquitos at bay. This is a necessity as everyone knows there will always be that one person who insists on sitting outside, although it is freezing cold. But as stated earlier – some traditions are just too deeply rooted to be changed. Kasper Stromman was elected Finnish Graphic Designer of the Year in 2013. Thanks to this project he also now worringly considers himself some sort of architect. Kasper thinks the summer house experience is best enjoyed when it has been taken indoors into a central Helsinki furniture show room.
