Summary: Rewind to 2009. It’s a year that you’ll never forget. Memories of Kanye interrupting Taylor’s acceptance speech, Twilight being made into a movie, the release of the Single Ladies music video, making your very own Facebook account, and texting your best friend on the newest Samsung slide phone would forever be ingrained in your mind. It was a busy year and with the help of your best friend, you were going to snag the hottest concert tickets that any teen girl or guy could dream of having. 

Author’s Note: This scenario is for the BGW Bingo Bash and is based off of the “self-insert your first teen phase.” The teen phase that I have chosen to write about was my very first boy band, the Jonas Brothers. Nothing that happened in this scenario actually happened to me. Like all but one of my stories, it’s just wishful thinking. © Give and Take is copyright monggu-eomma. Life seemed to take more than it gave back. It all began a few years ago. At eleven years old, you were starting to make lifelong friendships and settle into your life, your parents took away all of that progress by moving to a new place. It was supposed to be a fresh start, especially for your parents and their crumbling relationship and they had hoped that being closer to family would somehow solve all of their problems, but it didn’t stop the contention found in your home. The phrase “the grass is not greener on the other side” rang true for your family’s big move. The constant fighting didn’t disappear after your family moved and with being forced to make new friends and adjust to a new place, you felt like life was taking the biggest dump on you possible. 

With all of that being said, there was one thing as a result of your family moving that wasn’t terrible and that was your best friend, Kim Taehyung. You had first met him when his family had offered to help your family move into your new home. When you first looked around the neighborhood, it seemed like all of the kids in the neighborhood knew each other very well and it made you feel like an outsider. All of that quickly changed when Taehyung had approached you and asked if you wanted to play with him. Despite being shy, you nodded your head and from there you grew to be the best of friends. 

Taehyung had always been there for you. He was there cheering you on during your horseback riding competitions and he was there to console you when your parents told you that they didn’t have enough money to continue your horseback riding lessons. It was a low blow to have to give up on something that you loved to do and Taehyung was there to comfort by inviting you to hang out at his family’s farm and take care of their horses with him. He was there to encourage you to play the cello, which you had always wanted to play, even though it meant that you couldn’t be in Band class with him. Most recently, he was there through the tears and the deafening moments of silence when your mom walked out, leading to your parents’ divorce. He knew that he couldn’t fix your broken heart, but he did everything in his power to make sure that you remembered that you were not alone. On warm days he would come over and encourage you to go on walks with him to make sure you got fresh air and on cold days, he would open his arms to you and watch whatever movie you wanted to watch, even if it was Twilight. 

You and Taehyung did everything together, from taking the bus to school together, to taking as many classes together as possible -- much to the displeasure of your teachers -- to sharing secrets while playing Mario Kart late at night. He would listen to you gush about your favorite male celebrities and he even came with you at the midnight release of Breaking Dawn. Taehyung was without a doubt the best part of your life. 

“Nick is so handsome,” you sighed as you stood by your locker, admiring your newly acquired Jonas Brothers album. Taehyung stood next to you, looking down at the album and tried to remember which one was Nick. Was he the one with straight hair? 

“I thought Joe was your favorite,” Taehyung said. He didn’t particularly care for the Jonas Brothers, but he didn’t dislike them either. 

“Joe is my favorite, but I can still think that Nick is handsome,” you explained. “Oh! Oh! And Kevin,” you added, because in this house you loved and supported every Jonas Brother. 

Taehyung nodded, not really sure what to say to that. He supposed it made sense, but he also was under the impression that you were primarily into the Jonas Brothers for their music. You felt your phone vibrate in your pocket and you saw that a friend had texted you, asking if you were going to ride the bus back home. 

“We need to go! The bus is going to leave soon!” You exclaimed as you slid open your phone to reveal a full keyboard. You needed to tell your friend to ask the bus driver to wait for you and Taehyung to come. Before you could start the text, Taehyung’s eyes widened and he took your wrist so that you could run along with him.

The Fates seemed to be favoring you today, which got you excited, since the bus was still there by the time you and Taehyung had arrived, with chests heaving and hearts pounding. You had failed to notice that Taehyung was still holding on to your hand as you entered the bus, but oddly enough, it wasn’t weird. It felt kind of nice. You wouldn’t have minded him holding your hand more often. It wasn’t until you both sat down next to each other that Taehyung had noticed that he was still holding your hand. He looked down at your intertwined hands and immediately released your hand, a blush coloring his neck and cheeks. 

“Sorry,” he said. Normally you weren’t a big of prolonged physical contact, but you knew that if it weren’t for Taehyung holding your hand as he ran, there was no way that you would have made it on time to the bus. 

You bumped your shoulder against his, trying to diffuse the tension. “It’s okay. If it weren’t for you dragging me, I would have missed the bus.” You didn’t want to make it awkward by saying that you enjoyed him holding your hand. You would keep that information to yourself.

Although there was still some awkwardness hanging in the air, the rest of the bus ride home was spent listening to music with Taehyung. You each shared an earbud as you both listened to music on your iPod. It was amazing that that thing could hold five hundred songs. You were pretty sure that you’d never be able to use up all of the space for music. 

A few songs later, and you found yourself walking back home with Taehyung. The walk was only six minutes, you had counted, and you were still listening to music together. It was a little hard to share earbuds with Taehyung since he was starting to grow taller, which caused the earbud in your right ear to tug a few times. He asked a few times if you were okay since he saw the minor discomfort, but you didn’t mind it all. 

“Are you still going to come by later?” You asked when you stood in front of your house. 

“Of course! I just need to do some chores and then I’ll be right over,” Taehyung replied, with a smile. 

You clapped your hands and jumped up and down. “Awesome!” Taehyung laughed and started to make his way home. “And don’t forget to bring your phone!”

He turned around and tilted his head to the side. “My phone?” 

“Yeah! We’re gonna need it tonight,” you exclaimed. Taehyung was skeptical towards your request but he shrugged his shoulders in compliance. You never needed to try hard to convince him to do something. Your wish was your command and he would gladly follow.

“Are you really going to do this?” Taehyung asked as he watched you scatter five different phones, four cell phones and your home phone, on your bedroom floor. 

“Yes! I am,” you said as you looked up to see his eyes judging you from where he sat on your bed. You opted to sit on your bedroom floor to allow for more flexibility, although mobility wasn’t necessary for this challenge, you just liked knowing that you could move around. 

“Can’t you just use your laptop to get tickets?” Taehyung suggested. He looked toward your clunky Dell laptop that was sitting on your desk. That laptop was so ancient that it made a whirring noise whenever you used it, but despite its age the laptop worked perfectly fine even if it had to be plugged into a socket to function. 

“No! I can’t,” you replied as you folded your arms across your body. “I don’t have money and there’s no way that Dad will buy tickets for me. The only way that I can see them is to win tickets through this radio show,” you explained in exasperation. It felt like this was the millionth time that you were explaining yourself to Taehyung, but at the same time, you knew that you shouldn’t be too harsh on him. He could have made fun of you for your obsession over the Jonas Brothers, but he didn’t. On top of that, he was even letting you use his cellphone to call in to the radio show. “Can you pass me my radio, please?” 

Taehyung leaned over to your nightstand and grabbed your radio. 

  “Thank you!” You beamed as he handed over the radio to you. Taehyung smiled as he watched you dial the radio to the right station. He couldn’t remember the exact moment that he started crushing on you. Maybe it was when you shared your favorite ice cream with him, even though you hate sharing your favorite foods. Maybe it was when you spent all of the free day that they had in Band class laughing at him messing around on the saxophone. Maybe it was when your soft hand tightly held on to his hand when your school took your grade to the ice skating rink. Regardless of when he started to share his heart with you, Taehyung was resolved to stay by your side, even as you daydreamed of marrying your favorite Jonas Brother. 

Taehyung was snapped out of his thoughts when he felt a thud on your bed. You had tossed two of the five phones onto your bed. He gazed at you as the last rays from the Sun for the day streamed into your bedroom, illuminating your figure. He was crushing on you, hard. 

“When the radio host opens up the line, dial the radio station’s phone number,” you explained. Taehyung nodded his head, despite not really understanding what was so great about the Jonas Brothers, but at this point he was sure he would do anything for you. If you asked him to jump, he would say, “How high?” 

“You ready, Tae?” 

“Ready,” he said as he listened carefully to the radio host. Despite the fact that Taehyung was watching your nervous and excited state, he still managed to play his part and he continued to play his unspoken part ten minutes later when he held you in his arms on your bed as you cried. 

“We tried so hard,” you said in between tears as your fingers clutched Taehyung’s shirt as if your life depended on it. He didn’t think that it was accurate to say we since he had just followed along with you not giving anything but you much thought, but he wasn’t going to argue with you on that. 

You felt devastated. You knew that there was a chance that you wouldn’t get the tickets, but before the radio show, you did your best to not entertain those kinds of negative thoughts. It was all or nothing. From an outside perspective it seemed silly to cry over tickets, but you really wanted to see the Jonas Brothers and this was your one chance to do so. 

As the tears continued to fall, Taehyung carefully ran his fingers through your hair. He knew that you weren’t a touchy-feely person, so this prolonged physical contact was new territory for the both of you, but you didn’t complain about the comfort he gave. The only thing he could do was to comfort you to the best of his capacity. Occasionally, he’d rock your bodies back and forth, which would cause you to break out in laughter, even if you still felt heartbroken at the loss of not getting the concert tickets. Eventually, the tears stopped flowing and you looked up to see Taehyung looking down at you. 

“Thanks for helping me, Tae,” you said. “I know you don’t like or really care about the Jonas Brothers, but you still helped me.” 

“I’m always here. Even if that means helping you get tickets to see the Brothers Jonas,” Taehyung said, purposefully getting the band name wrong. You playfully punched him in the arm and rolled your eyes. 

“It’s the Jonas Brothers, Tae. Not the Brothers Jonas,” you corrected.

Taehyung laughed at your correction. You felt the vibrations of his chest, since he was still holding on you in his arms. He laid against the headboard of your bed, taking you down with him. 

“You’re such a dork, Taehyung.” 

“But I’m better than the Jonas Brothers, right?” You felt Taehyung bury his face in your hair and you smiled. 

“You aren’t just better. You’re the best.” 

Life took more than it gave back, but none of that mattered because when life gave you Kim Taehyung, you didn’t need anything else.

Will the Galaxy Fold be the future of smartphones?- Caroline Kelly

On February 20th Samsung had their “Unpacked” event.  They revealed the new line of Galaxy phones.  While the S10s caught the eye of many, it was the Galaxy Fold that had the internet buzzing.  The phone opens up to have a tablet-sized display.  Larger displays have been a trend as of late as people are doing more and more with their phones.  You can have multiple things open at once or watch the new Avengers movie on the Netflix app.  For these things, you do want a larger display, but do people really want to be carrying around a tablet sized phone all the time?  Well as a female I can only fit my large phone in my back pocket and if my phone got any bigger I probably could not.  It is not practical to have such a large phone.

The fold seemingly solves that issue. It is still slim and compact but you can open it up if you want the larger screen.  This is not the first time that a fold has solved a problem for phones...

Phones like the Sidekick or the EnV touch became the hot new thing in the 2000s.  It solved everyone’s texting problem and broke away from the use of T9.  Although the Sidekick does not flip open it does expand to have multiple functionalities.  Other phones such as the Blackberry also had a full keyboard, however, it had more business use connotations while these “new and improved” flip phones were meant for the masses (aka teens and young adults).  

The Galaxy Fold is 4.6 inch folded display and a 7.3 inch open display.  To put that into perspective the new Galaxy S10 plus has a 6.4 inch display so when opened the Fold is truly a tablet and not just a phablet.  The exterior screen is the size of older models like the iPhone 6. The Fold also has an extensive number of cameras; three on the back exterior, one on the front and two inside.  In addition, the phone has two batteries.  These features are unheard of and it is no surprise that the internet is buzzing. The buzz is both positive and negative but have pointed out some key issues with this new phone.

The Galaxy Fold seems great in theory but has flaws including the $2000 starting price tag.  

1. When you only want to use the phone part the screen is a downgrade to a 4.6-inch display.  Secondly, because of the fold, the screen is more rectangular which causes large black bars on the top and bottom.

2. The phone is so large that it has two batteries.  The brand is not well known for its batteries, to say the least.  Also without extensive testing, we will not know if the dual screen will cause a shorter battery life even with two

3. As phones are highlighting how thin they are getting, the fold creates bulk that people may not want as a trade-off for this larger screen.

4.  The glass...even as they have become more “shatterproof” this edge to edge glass just seems like a recipe for cracking especially when it's hard to know how an Otterbox like case could work on this phone

Overall the concept is interesting and definitely solves a need but it seemingly creates new problems in doing so.  It is interesting to see a big change up in the smartphone shape.  Only time will tell if this concept of the phone takes off but my gut says it will be more of a fast fad with tech lovers and the price tag will hinder the masses from trying something new.

A little rant about Xiaomi products.

Before I actually say anything, keep in mind that these are experiences I had firsthand and stories of my friends who are also working professionals. I use my phone to work as well.

This isn't to bash at Xiaomi or anything, it's just about telling what I know and think about their products.

I own a Redmi Note 10 Pro

This is the phone I bought back in 2021 for work and school reasons, as my older phone was at the end of its battery lifespan. Near the end, at least.

At first, the phone was crazy powerful for being only 339 euros cheap and I actually got to enjoy the phone quite a lot. I loved it so much that I decided that it had to be my own personal phone. It served me well during the school year as it had an awesome camera, an awesome sound system and a really good screen. It had Android 11 out of the box and it was perfect. It was truly a phone I wish I had earlier. The very reason I bought the phone for was the balance it had on all aspects: design, performance, screen and battery. And on that note, the battery is damn chunky as it could last me up to 24 hours.

However, as time went by things started to fall apart. When I updated the phone to Android 12, problems started. You see, the first and the most important problem I started having was the keyboard. It stopped working as in it started not to appear when I needed it to type anything, regardless of the app I was using. Be it WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram. The keyboard wouldn't show up and it created me a whole lot of problems both at school and at work.

The second issue I had was MIUI itself. What really bothers me is I get ads on the security checker, or anything really. Despite turning off those things it still bothers me a lot because Xiaomi puts a lot of pressure on app security and permissions (i.e. when I give a specific app notification access it would block me for 10 seconds) all while putting ads on a file manager or scanner.

Finally, the reason I reverted back to my old phone (which is a Samsung Galaxy S10) is the broken camera. This was a mistake on my end, yes, but with my camera damaged I don't think the phone has use anymore.

I also bought the Mi Band 6

I absolutely love the product in itself, I really do. However, the software management on the phone is god awful. While the product scores 9/10 in my books, all the apps managing the band are so awfully made I kinda gave up on using them.

The band (maybe I can just call it a watch since it also tells the time) is really a good product in itself, because its value started shining when I put it to use in various sports scenarios. I use the watch to track my jump rope workouts, my steps, my boxing sessions, my Basketball sessions, hell, even my bodyweight workout sessions. It is a great tool and it serves its purpose really well. The only think I don't like about the watch is being too sensitive when I put my gloves on. Therefore, sweat activates the screen and quits the workout immediately. This doesn't happen on swimming though. I had the time to actually test the band on the water and it proved to be not only useful, but resistant.

Now, moving on to the apps that actually manage the thing: everyone sucks. I'm not joking at all. I would laugh but it actually makes me cry.

Let me explain.

Zepp Life (which was Mi Fit) used to be perfect but now it doesn't feel so smooth anymore, in my opinion. This is because the whole new design language and coming back to it gave me a really hard time. Also, the flaw the app had ever since I set up everything was its lack of data sync. Google fit doesn't work too good and it always display the workouts on the watch as either walking or others. Just not the actual workout itself. To solve this problem I resort to Strava and it really is a good app, however Zepp Life doesn't support it.

Zepp (it's called just Zepp) is another app that manages watches like mine and it can sync to both Strava and Google Fit. Functionally, it is the perfect app, however it doesn't let me edit the watch face because the default design isn't my type.

I don't even wanna start talking about Xiaomi Fitness because God forbid that app was useful. For starters, it didn't even recognize my watch.

I'm saying so many things about the products so far, but I think this is the best place to do so.

I also had the Xiaomi TWS Earbuds 2 Basic

What can I say? I hated the experience as a whole. The buds kept calling in the Google Assistant at the weakest of wind it even dared to get near the sensor of my left bud. Same thing to Bixby. And there was no official solution for this problem, such as remapping the buttons or disabling the button as a whole. I should really code an app for Android that could actually do that. I care a lot about this kind of accessories because I used them to get my music going during training.

My friends also had problems with their Redmi phones

I know someone that got all their stuff gone for no reason whatsoever and that stuff wasn't backed up because their cloud storage was full.

And today an old colleague talked about an issue with the dialer, when the calls come the phone doesn't receive them or even worse, the phone just don't even turn the screen off when they put said phone on their ear.

Just these two stories alone made me think today. Also, I'm actually glad to know that I'm not the one being stupid with a malfunctioning phone. And on that note, going to get it fixed per warranty didn't do much, because all the shop did was update the firmware. Like wtf, you were supposed to fix the problem. Now my warranty is used. I don't even wanna remember such things, especially because I'll switch to something else once I can.

Manufacturers recently released the largest capacity and fastest microSD cards ever made. The 128 GB cards demonstrate more than a 1,000-fold increase in storage density over the last decade, and the fastest speeds of these microSD cards now rival other high-speed options for wireless computing.

The SD Association is made up of application developers and micro SD and component manufacturers. The organization determines microSD technology specifications and sets standards and roadmaps for the industry. SD Association President Brian Kumagai explained some of the new features and recent technology trends that help ensure microSD cards remain relevant and offer viable storage for many products and markets in the future.

Markets driving standardization

MicroSD cards are predominantly used in smartphones and other mobile devices that have limited space. When microSD cards first arrived on the scene, they quickly became the most popular form factor for mobile devices, and according to Kumagai, that is what drove their success. The microSD market is rapidly growing as more smartphones ship with microSD card slots. Even though the newest phones made by industry giant Apple do not currently accommodate microSD cards, those made by Samsung and many others do.

Over time, smartphone manufacturers have reduced the amount of on-board memory that ships with smartphones, thus lowering their hardware costs. Consumers have compensated by adding additional storage, often using 8 GB microSD cards. In fact, the bulk of microSD cards sold is used in smartphones, but sales of larger cards (16 and 32 GB) continue to grow. MicroSD card use is also growing in other devices that need small form factors, such as consumer digital imaging and video cameras like the GoPro action camera, night-vision IP security cameras, nanny cameras, automotive in-dash cameras and tablets. MicroSD is still the storage space of choice as devices become smaller and cards gain higher capacity, become faster and exhibit better performance.

Capacity: It’s all in the flash memory technology

The fundamental technology in all SD cards and any type of solid-state storage device today is NAND flash memory. Current NAND flash memory chips use floating-gate processes that all manufacturers support. Over the years, decreasing the horizontal line width of the lithography technology used in NAND memory production has created higher density storage capacities. The industry roadmap shrank design-rule dimensions for memory features from 110 nm down to the current size of 19 nm, making smaller NAND chips and allowing microSD cards to use more of them to hold more data. At these thin-line widths, there are only a few electrons of charge inside a single level cell. NAND chips using 16 nm line widths will be coming soon, but Kumagai says the industry is starting to see the limitations of scaling to smaller lithography.

Within the next year, NAND suppliers are expected to roll out the next generation technology that will go vertical and offer much higher densities than the current technology. The 3-D concept involves grinding individual cells so they are much thinner and stacking more of them so there is more than one cell in the same horizontal plane. “This technology is more difficult to produce. The thinner it is, the more difficult it is to read all the different levels, and error correction becomes needed,” says Kumagai.

All major NAND suppliers have 3-D technologies in development now. “The microSD card will look the same on the outside and at the interface, but the new 3-D NAND processes may help reliability and have other impacts on the industry if the technology is cheaper,” Kumagai says.

One way higher reliability processes will change the industry is that it will create new uses for microSD cards. They will be used in high-end automotive or industrial applications such as bar-code readers and scanners that need to store important data.

Strategies for higher speeds

While memory manufacturers are increasing the storage capacity by improving NAND technologies, they are also increasing microSD card speed with a combination of hardware and software strategies. One way is through the interface. A new high-speed serial interface (UH-II) handles the speed by having a second row of pins connect to the outside world and a new file system that supports much larger micro XSDHC or SDXC cards that are 32 GB to 2 TB. The newest second-generation ultra-high-speed (UHS2) cards using this interface have much faster read and write times at up to 312 mbps, up from 104 mbps on older generation cards.

Another area where speed can be gained is in the flash-memory controllers. This component manages the NANDs and does a handshake to the outside world. The controllers in the fastest-speed-class microSD cards use strategies to help both functions, such as using multiple channels and interleaving data.
