Trip talking to the group for the first time. But she only knows Japanese.

Sonic getting super excited to meet someone who speaks his native language, but being unable to talk to her because his selective mutism won't let him.

So he translates for her by signing. And Tails translates Sonic’s signing into English for everyone who hasn't learned the language yet. But it doesn't work the other way because Trip doesn't know ASL.

And it makes Sonic feel bad. Because if he could just talk to people, he could fully translate for her. But his stupid rebellious vocal chords refuse to work right.

Trip senses Sonic’s frustration. And suddenly there's a hand on his shoulder. Sonic looks up and Trip is smiling at him.

In a way, she understands.

transmasc sonic and trans metal sonic who Isnt transmasc coexisting is really funny to me. especially if you believe that sonic came out as trans Before metal sonic was created. which would imply that eggman was intentionally trying to avoid misgendering sonic while making an evil robot copy of him but metal sonic inherently has extremely high levels of transgender swag due to being based on sonic and all that had to go SOMEWHERE so it manifests in the form of them being trans in a completely different direction . such a beautiful world we live in

I was thinking about what different Sonic characters' names could be in sign a couple of months ago, since so many people headcanon Sonic knowing sign language, and I ended up making animations for a few!! Here's what I came up with for Sonic!! :D

In the video, Sonic is signing his name, comprised of the words ‘fast’ and ‘hedgehog’ in BSL. He signs ‘fast’ by bouncing his index fingers off of each other—his right finger coming down as his left goes up—with the other fingers and thumb curled in. “fast” is written in dark green on the left side of the background as he signs this. 

The word in the background changes to “Hedgehog” as he signs the second part. His raised right hand opens up so that his fingers and thumb are all splayed, while the lowered left hand curls into a fist. The left arm moves horizontal in front of his chest, and the splayed right hand lowers to run the heel of the palm across the top of the forearm, to symbolise the spines of a hedgehog. Lifting his right elbow up to move the palm across the other arm obscures the “Hedgehog” lettering slightly.

Sonic's head moves as he signs, spines bouncing up and down and head tilting to the left. While he’s signing, he mouths his name, the first syllable ‘So’ being mouthed during the ‘fast’ sign, and the second syllable ‘nic’ being mouthed during the ‘hedgehog’ sign.  

On the right side of the video, next to Sonic’s head, is the artist’s signature—the silhouette of a bongo with the letters BD written inside.

Wanted to dump some Sonic language headcanons.

Sonic is definitely a Polyglot. It really seems that he's a super nomadic person and I like the idea of him growing up absorbing a bunch of cultures and languages. In Unleashed he goes all over and communicates fine with everyone. Apparently he also reads Arabian Nights in Arabic in Sonic and the Secret Rings. I can't vouch as I don't know arabic. He's coded to be Egyptian and it's pretty clear evidence. I believe the common language is english because of the large wester influence, but with how much japanese influence goes into Sonic I'd say he speaks that, too. He was once said to be from christmas Island which is a real island. The official language is English there but it's also common to speak languages like Malay or Manderin, so I like to think he knows those two as well. I think he's astonishingly good at language, though and him and Tails bond through that shared academic. I feel like Rogue and Shadow know a lot of languages too because of their occupations, try to have secret conversations in another language, and Sonic dips in. Its become a game to figure out what languages they know that he doesn't. Eggman also knows a lot of languages.

There's also a few bilingual characters. Knuckles has had both Jamaican and Mezo-American coding so I think he obviously speaks english and either an ancient American language or Spanish. Blaze speaks Hindu. Silver speaks italian. I imagine Amy taking a french class in school and being adept but not amazing or fluent.

Shadow wrote diaries. He didn’t believe in his own memory. It was not like he could sit down at the desk at the end of the day and record everything due to his unpredictable work schedule as a G.U.N. agent; he attended to this matter once he’d got time, writing down mostly facts, occasionally his thoughts and feelings. He was still learning to understand his feelings. He kept the diaries in the most unfrequented drawer, strictly in order, and never read them again.

Sonic somehow found the diaries during one of his many visits to Shadow’s apartment and only realized what he was reading after flipping through a few pages.

“Sorry! Didn’t know these were your diaries.”

“That’s okay, you can read them. They’re boring stuff, anyway.”

“No entries about secret agent under cover missions?”

“You do know a thing called non-disclosure agreement, do you?”

“Am I in them? Do you write about me, too, Shadow?”

“What kind of stupid question is this.”

“So you do write about me!” Sonic grinned widely.

“You are annoying, is what I’m going to write down.” Shadow pretended to be annoyed. In this moment he knew for sure he was in love and happy, and it was moments like this that he wanted to hold on to—moments like this that he feared would be lost.

First, a Badget headcanon. :)

I like to think that Barry is relatively average in every way, but has alarmingly good eyesight in the dark due to their nocturnal heritage, but they’re like PARTICULARLY weirdly good at seeing in the dark to the point of bordering on supernatural?

I feel like when Barry and Gadget move in together, it becomes common place for Gadget to stumble into the kitchen at 3am and see the creepy glowing eyed silhouette of Barry sitting on the counter eating a pudding cup in the dark. And after the absolute heart attack they give him, when Gadget asks why the hell they do that, they very politely reply with “oh hi I didn’t wanna wake you up? <:)”

And now let’s talk about Sonic? (And additionally Tails and Shadow.)

I like to think that due to his constant traveling of the world, Sonic can speak like 15 different languages and specifically 6-7 of them fluently. This also includes morse code, which he learned for the hell of it with Tails and they like to tap messages at each other and giggle about it which makes people around them who don’t understand EXTREMELY insecure and confused.

Shadow got annoyed with this one day and finally started learning to translate whatever they’re so tickled over whenever he’s around, only to discover they’re sitting around tapping stupid things like “pee pee poo poo” at each other and he’s been pissed off about this ever since.

Have any of you guys seen that post about dead names? The one where the person suggests that one should make peace with it so it becomes just a name, no longer associated with them. The one where they suggested doing something like naming a pokemon or something you can take care of after your dead name so you can give it a different association that's more positive

consider classic sonic who is mute/quiet type/prefers sign language etc. fill in your favorite headcanon, and consider classic tails who knows sign language so he doesnt need to use vocal communication with his older bro. but what if classic tails liked talking/babbling just for fun? reading new words out loud, testing them out for himself, like the new name his big bro gave him.

what im saying is what if modern sonic loves talking so much now that he doesnt shut up when he should, because he learned it from tails?

Sonic the Hedgehog Headcanon #1

Originally, Sonic was a mute. Whether it be from a traumatic experience, or he just never really learned out to talk. 

Or, Sonic never knew how to speak English, so didn’t bother speaking. As such, when he did learn to speak, he did have a weird accent no could place. 

When Tails met Sonic, he had trouble communicating with the hedgehog. Especially, since Sonic only used hand gestures and signals. Sonic never saw being quiet as a problem since he never communicated with people except for, you know, Eggman. (He only ever talked to Amy at the time through letters). 

Tails was the one to suggest that Sonic learned sign language. Whenever they weren’t on an adventure, they were hunkering down in a library, trying to teach each other. (Sonic only agreed because he knew it would make Tails happy). 

Or, Sonic already knew sign language, and he taught Tails. Thankfully, Tails learned it pretty fast. 

Eggman was already fluent in sign language. (In fact, he might’ve been the one to teach Sonic). 

Sonic secretly learned several cuss words in sign language, and he only uses them on Eggman. (Eggman is not pleased by this). 

Whenever Sonic’s stressed or overexcited, he tends to sign really fast, and it makes it hard for Tails to understand him. 

On another note, whenever Sonic’s upset, he refuses to sign, and he may only give vague gestures. 

When Sonic finally starts speaking, he and Tails only use sign language in battle as a way to communicate with each other. Sometimes, whenever he’s upset or stressed, he stops talking, and he will only use sign language to speak.

Amy knows sign language, although it is not as advanced as Tails’ knowledge. She made Tails teach her when they were younger.

Knuckles knows a handful of sign language, and he’s bad at it. He can understand it, but he’s terrible at signing. (Maybe because of his gloves?) Unsurprisingly, his favorite word to sign to Sonic, is “idiot.”

The same Annon who asked what 'For the Ages' thing was, and I just had an idea, if they switched ages..would that make it so Sonic has trouble speaking sense he couldn't talk in the classic games?

Oh my goodness, I didn't even think of that, but you're so right! According to my headcanons, this would mean Sonic's completely mute right now. I'm not sure if he would've known sign language when he was 4 ish, but luckily he still has his memories, so he still knows it and communicating shouldn't be a problem.

Ahhhhhhhhhh Mute Classic Sonic is so precious to me. I love him so much!

Was telling this to Toby, but Knuckles’ loyalty is Sonic runs extremely deep.

Sonic being one of the first people to interact with him, and genuinely not try to trick or steal from him, to not underestimate him and treat him like an equal solidified his place in Knuckles life over time. As they fought together, fought each other, and fought for each other, Knuckles respect and admiration for Sonic grew into a loyalty that could never be broken.

Whenever, wherever Sonic calls for him, Knuckles will be there. He refuses to let any harm come to the hero, if he has any say in it.

No matter how much Knuckles bitches and moans, he’s following Sonic’s lead.

Sonic is also one of the people on a very short list that he will allow to just hang all over him without too much fight. He acts annoyed, but he genuinely enjoys touch, and having someone casually hanging off him like it’s nothing big.

Happy disability pride month! Im so happy that my old disabled sonic stuff blew up on the 1st so that I got reminded to draw them again

Plus some new headcanons this time. I think headcanoning Amy as severally visually impaired is fun bc that’s why she is always mistaking ohter hedgehogs for sonic lol (she only uses the walking stick if she’s going out alone, otherwise she just relies on the person she’s with to guide her.)

I’ve always headcanond Tails as nonverbal do to the tism, his iPod thing is one of those text to speech communication aids

He also taught Kit sign language because I think Starline is ableist (Kit is deaf)
