For the second (technically third) non-infodump, Mystic in all of her glory presents voice claims for everyone in TCoTC. However, this, unlike the name origins, will have to be updated. Let's say Mystic hasn't found voices that fit all twelve members yet. What a bozo.
Sprinkle - Unikitty (Unikitty!)
Stormee - Whirlwind (Skylanders Giants onwards)
Rango - N/A
Pixie - Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury (Sailor Moon, VIZ dub)
Minyako - None as she's mute by disability.
Tama - Puffball (Battle for Dream Island, less vocoded)
Colomby - Mr. Muffin (asdfmovie)
Soulternal - N/A
Neo - Do the Flop Guy (asdfmovie, slightly autotuned)
Poppet - Raven (Teen Titans, older in tone)
Diston - ENA (ENA, Happy Ena in Auction Day, default voice)
Myshell - Mystic's real voice (real life, older and snarkier in tone)
Side note, for the non-infodumps that aren't related to a single member, the glowless version of the banner art will be used.

Honorable Mention: Prey (2022)
There's a tradition among the people of the Comanche Nation. If you want to be acknowledged as a great hunter you ought to bring the body of a large, powerful animal. A predator like a cougar or a bear would do fine, something the young but resourceful healer Naru is trying to achieve for herself as she feels it's time to earn the respect of her people. Failing at the task against a cougar, however, leaves her older brother with the glory as he earns the title of a War Chief.
But the takeaway isn't just disappointment, what made Naru lose concentration that night was a strange lights she's sure belong to a Mupitsl, an ambushing demon who hunts and kills men. Indeed, after seeing a bear being wrecked by this invisible assailant, she decides she's going to hunt it herself. Unfortunately, the French voyageurs on the monster's tail have other plans... so does the creature itself.
One of the problems with horror franchises is that the sequels either become derivative, or to keep things "interesting" they add ridiculous gimmicks and absurd plot developments. Which makes all the more refreshing when a film like this discards that in favor of keeping things simple, but more importantly, meaningful. By not getting caught on the weeds of a fictional alien culture the story can have it's cast have solid narrative arcs that interweave together to a fulfilling whole. It also explores in a more thorough way the nature of hunting: It's not just that the Predator poses a threat, but that all the involved factions hunt each other for different motivations and to different ends which makes them foils to each other.
While taking some significant historical liberties the film does a remarkable job at respectfully and accurately depicting the Comanche nation and it’s people, customs, practices, and so on. It's a pretty brilliant return to form that exchanges the macho for a sincere story of self realization and cultural awareness.

PREY (2022) Grade: C+
Not as clever as I'd had liked. I think the new Predators movies misses what the OG had was really great and interesting supporting characters. The new ones focus too much one the leads. The female lead was great here, but not a lot of charm after her.

Prey (2022, dir. Dan Trachtenberg) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Prey was, pardon my French, the shit. I adore the original Predator, it was one of my very first comfort movies. If I was looking for something to watch, and Predator was on, that's what I would watch. This movie is better. Dan Trachtenberg is now 3 for 3 with me (the other two things he's done being 10 Cloverfield Lane, a masterpiece, and the episode of Black Mirror "Playtest," one of my favorite episodes of the entire show). The restraint this film shows in not just throwing you into the action is incredibly refreshing. It takes its time building up its two main characters (three if you count the Predator, which you should), so that when shit does inevitably hit the fan, you're invested. Even with all of that reservation, when the action finally gets to a boil and kicks off, it does not disappoint. The fights are clever, and Amber Midthunder's protagonist Naru fights with cunning as opposed to brute force. Some moments during the climactic final battle actually had me cheering out loud from my couch, by myself, in the dark. Speaking of Midthunder, she is an absolute beast in this, and I hope this sparks many, many more roles for her in the future. I truly don't have many, if any, complaints with this one. It's an action thriller that cares equally about its narrative and action, with a strong director, a strong script, and a strong cast. Also A+++ for Native American representation. What's not to like?
Score: 10/10
Currently streaming on Hulu.
Bonus points for the goodest little doggo the screen has seen this year, Sarii. Who is played by a beautiful American Dingo named Coco, who I've just learned was not a trained film dog, making her even more of a good, good girl.

At its core, the Predator is a modern science fiction take on the concept of “the great white hunter.” The term applied to real-life figures like Alan Black and Frederick Selous, along with fictional creations like Allan Quatermain. These figures were often Europeans or Americans who traveled to Africa to hunt exotic game. This was the time when Africa was known as “the dark continent” and its inhabitants frequently portrayed as “primitive.” These hunters quickly built a mythology around themselves.
Similar to Richard Connell’s classic short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” the Predator essentially takes that idea to an absurdly heightened extreme: What if a big game hunter pursued human beings rather than animals? Much like the Americans and the Europeans traveling to Africa with their guns and traps, the Predator arrives on Earth with more advanced technology to stalk and kill its prey. Much like those hunters take ivory from fallen elephants, the Predator takes trophies of its own.
While riffing on these colonial tropes, Predator was a product of its time. It followed a military team led by Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), which is co-opted by Dutch’s old friend Al Dillon (Carl Weathers) for a top secret black ops mission in Central America. It was a rather timely premise for a science fiction action film, with its June 1987 release neatly intersecting with the televised Iran-Contra hearings that covered shady American activity in Nicaragua.
Part of the genius of Predator lies in the obvious thematic layers running through the movie. Just like the Predator is an alien presence on Earth, Dutch and his team are well aware of the fact that they have no business on “the wrong side of the border.” Early in the film, Dutch and his team tear through a rebel base with ruthless efficiency, demonstrating their superior training and firepower. The irony is that the Predator will be just as effective in dismembering them.
Like many action movies of the decade, including Return of the Jedi and Top Gun, Predator has been read as a relitigation of Vietnam. It is about an American foreign intervention that goes disastrously wrong. However, like in the Rambo movies, Predator’s protagonists succeed by appropriating the tactics of the Viet Cong, by staging low-tech guerrilla warfare against a technologically superior foe. There is an element of America working through what Nixon called “the Vietnam Syndrome.”
Trachtenberg and Aison understand that Predator is a movie about the horror of colonialism, but they push the metaphor even further in Prey. After all, the heroes of Predator are a black ops team that are themselves engaged in extending the influence of the United States into Central America. The most prominent indigenous character in Predator is Anna Gonsalves (Elpidia Carrillo), the only survivor of the raid on the guerrilla camp, who spends most of the movie as an unarmed hostage.
Naru feels less like Dutch and more like Anna. Like Anna, Naru is the most prominent woman in a predominantly male cast. Like Anna, Naru spends extended portions of the film as a captive hostage, overpowered by both her own tribesman Wasape (Stormee Kipp) and later by a French trapper (Mike Paterson). Like Anna, Naru survives her first encounter with the creature because it doesn’t consider her a threat. However, unlike Anna, Naru asserts agency within the plot of Prey.
Rather than focusing on an external force intruding into another nation, Prey focuses on an indigenous population. The film is set on the American frontier, primarily within the Comanche Nation. Repeatedly throughout the film, the Predator is likened to the European settlers who are encroaching on the North American continent. Naru repeatedly encounters traps set by those hunters, which are not too dissimilar to the technology employed by the Predator itself.
At one point, Naru stumbles across a field of skinned buffalo. It directly evokes the skinned bodies hanging from the tree in the original Predator. For a moment, it seems like the alien creature might have done this, until Naru recovers a discarded cigar. The horror is man-made. It is an image taken directly from American history, tied explicitly to the subjugation of the Native American population. To quote an anonymous army official, “Every buffalo dead is an Indian gone.”
Central to Prey is the importance of standing up against imperialist aggression. Taabe turns a trophy skull on the Predator’s belt into an improvised weapon. Naru is undergoing the kühtaamia, a ritual in which she must hunt a creature strong enough to hunt her. “You think the reason for kühtaamia is to prove you can hunt,” Sumu (Stefany Mathias) warns Naru. “But there’s only one reason: to survive.” Taabe summarizes the importance of the ritual in setting boundaries, “When the lion comes, you tell that thing, ‘This is as far as you go. No more. This is it.’”

GT JULY PROMPTS 2024
DAY 2: STUDY
Studies weren’t an easy task for everyone. Some people felt inclined to do brainy activities like memorizing text or work out some numbers.
My kind of workout was anything but mental. Light gray walls avoided outer distractions and kept me focused on the task I had in hands. Well, not that I stayed focused more than two minutes, but I was trying and that was the best thing I could say about it.
Stormee’s assistant got five of us reunited a week ago, explaining the orders and main objectives for the next mission. That might have occurred… whenever we were called. That was one of the many funny things at this facility, you never knew when they would put your life in the line and some people found that endearing, I found it to be a piece of s***.
So, back to the main theme, assistant’s words were actually “study this notes like your life depends on them ‘cause it does, your dead bodies are a little more useless that you are right now, so keep them alive, would you?”. Lovely.
—I can smell your brain on fire, sweetie— Aliah’s voice scoffed at me from my back.
—The fuck you are doing here— I asked without even turning around to greet her.
—Just wanted to mess with someone and you are the most messeable person I know in the whole complex.
—That word doesn’t even exist— I puffed and took a peek over my shoulder just to catch her grinning a smile, which annoyed me even more.
—Come on, let’s have some fun— she said while touching my shoulder. The next second, she was tiny and sitting on me —. You know, I have just discovered an unsealed entry to the armory…
Without hesitation, I held her in a fist and took her up to my face.
—First, I actually need to study the detail of the next deal. Second, that’s bullshit and you know it. So I do.
—Why would I lie to one of the most dangerous guys here? — she blinked an eye at me and instantly grew again, falling to sit straight upon my desk, the manual underneath.
—Even if what you claim is true, I am busy. Go out— my hand waved at her.
—Jim, Jim, Jim, I know you are there. Come out to play with me— she sang squeaky. My brain started buzzing and a familiar and imaginary click made me close my eyes, trying to focus on retain him back. After some quiet breaths, I knew I had won that time. Aliah was not strong enough to call him whenever she wanted.
My fist wrapped her shirt and pulled her up form the desk only to find itself grabbing the air as she was shrinking again. Aliah grew back before her body hit the floor and ran all the way to the door.
—What a pity, don’t say I didn’t invite you. Bye bye— her lips made up a kiss and threw it to the air.
—Just out! — beginning to stand up was what it took to have her running away. I sighted and closed the door once again.
I turned around just to see the never-ending guide waiting for me.
Fuck.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #8: Prey (dir. Dan Trachtenberg)
Tumblr media
Dan Trachtenberg is an absolute beast of a filmmaker. He's now breathed new life into two different franchises with this and 10 Cloverfield Lane (even if The Cloverfield Paradox immediately undid all of his hard work), and made what, in my opinion, is one of the best episodes of Black Mirror with Play Test. This dude crafts slow burn buildups like no other. It is so hard to create a payoff for a slow burn that actually feels satisfying. Normally, by the point you reach the shift, the villain has been to built up, the main character has nowhere to go, it leaves the door wide open for disappointment and nothing that could possibly happen in the third act could live up to the promise that came before it. However, everything about Prey's third act is an absolute justification for the slower-paced character study that makes up the films first half. It also creates an empathy for the protagonist that is absolutely crucial to the film's final climactic battle. We care about what happens to Amber Midthunder's Naru, she has gone through so much, she has lost people, and she has to win, she has to prove to herself that she is worthy. It takes the Predator franchise's entire "alpha-predator" motif and does something that's actually thematically interesting.
Not to mention that everything about this movie is just cool. The Predator's new design is cool, the imagery in the film is cool, the fights are really cool, it's all just such an insanely fun time. The action sequences work because the film doesn't try to make us believe Naru is capable of beating the Predator by strength alone, of course she isn't, we see this creature pick up a bear and cut in half without even trying (that's not even a spoiler, more just a tease to get you all even more excited to go watch this in case you haven't yet). Naru must prove that being the alpha isn't entirely about strength, but about cunning and tactical advantage, as well. She survives because of her expanded knowledge of both the world of hunters and gatherers, she survives because she's used to being invisible, to not being viewed as a threat, she survives because she is, as the title suggests, prey. If you're a fan of action films and haven't watched this because you thought it was more of a horror film, turn your TV on right now and watch this. If you're a Predator franchise fan and, for some wild reason, haven't watched this yet, turn your TV on right now and watch this. Coming from someone who loves the original Predator, this is the best film in the Predator franchise, and if they continue to carry it in the directions this film set up, I hope they bring Trachtenberg and Midthunder back to carry it forward.
Currently streaming on Hulu.

Posted elsewhere on this website (specifically a second blog I have hidden until events happen) but have the renders (or basically easy color references) for my Katamari OCs, including a new fella who was created since the last post that involved these weirdos.
Again, a reminder of who we are dealing with here (from left to right, going through each row): Sprinkle, Stormee, and Rango in the first row. Pixie, Minyako, Tama (featuring his plush Mamey) in the second row. Colomby, Soulternal, and Neo in the third row. Lastly, Poppet (featuring her pet mouse Squeakers), Diston (who also got a redesign), and the new cousin who was created in early August, Myshell, who no one knows where exactly they came from.
These renders were mostly made due to the first set of renders, being made before Diston and Myshell, not being the best. This was mostly due to how they were traced from a group picture of them compared to the new set which is entirely brand-new art. And also how they would not be the best when showing off their personalities when they made their comeback in June (when We Love Katamari Rreroll released and I dove back into Katamari). So, for funsies, have the first set of renders for the "original ten" alongside the new set.
