Holy shit the fact half of team RWBY has their primary color change is also part of what makes them different from STRQ.

Red, White, Black, Yellow. It was the core idea behind the show, it was the basis of the main character designs.

And it’s the big visual connector between STRQ and RWBY.

But Weiss isn’t really represented by White — her family is. The more she comes into her own, the more prominent that blue becomes in her outfits, and she’s always had those red accents that made her outfits pop.

Similarly, Blake isn’t really Black — that was all Adam’s influence. Blake’s primary color is purple. And the further Blake and Weiss get from their abusers, the more they heal and grow, the more prominent their own colors become compared to those of others who influenced them.

Team RWBY changes because they overcome their past traumas and get away from the people who influenced them negatively. But their adult counterparts — the RWBY that failed — didn’t. STRQ stayed with their same color schemes into adulthood, while team RWBY has changed and grow.

Thinking about Team STRQ, about how Ozpin never knew Ruby had silver eyes.

About how Summer Rose, his frontline agent of choice, gambled her life on ending the conflict before her daughter could see it with doomed eyes.

About how Qrow, Ozpin's most unflinchingly loyal soldier, who saw the horrors Salem was brewing, never breathed a word of it to him.

About how Taiyang glared his brother-in-law down when Qrow went to tell her the truth about her eyes.

About how Raven stalked and betrayed their family in her own twisted love but never betrayed that secret.

About how Ozpin walked into a conference room one day and looked into silver eyes and four different pairs of eyes said back: 'Our love to her trumps our duty to you.'

About how this family of choice, defined by loss, all looked at each other, and said, 'Not our girl. We will not let this be her burden.' About how the result was all for nothing because it became hers anyway.

Thinking about Ruby Rose, a Huntress of Atlas, who chose love over duty without a second thought and saved two cities' worth of people for it. About how sometimes, the choice is far more impactful than the result.

The new rwby short reminded me of one of my favourite aspects of team rwby. Which is that it starts with Weiss and Blake being two traumatised teens with dark backstories who meet Ruby and Yang who are like wow! You guys seem to have a lot of baggage and we'd like to help with that. We're just normal sisters but we'll do our best :D

And then cut to 9 seasons later when Weiss and Blake have conquered their demons, reconnected with their families and are slowly healing meanwhile every small drip of lore we get about Ruby and Yang's family feels like this

I feel like perhaps we should have gotten an apology from Qrow for dismissing his niece like that in v3 because damn. If I were Yang i’d be hurt lol

Yang and qrow have a very interesting relationship it’s very right to business and mostly based on dealing with the other people in their lives they were both responsible for

Not for any lack of love for each other they just had to you know

They kinda have a weird agreement going on with that where they’re clearly working together to keep they’re family alive and they’re both doing really unhealthy things to do to themselves but they can’t help or stop each other

Like qrow probably wants to stop Yang from having to take care of her family 24/7 but that has to happen

Yang probably wants qrow to stop drinking so much and go on less missions but there’s nothing she can do about it

So they’re relationship is just…. Weird so I personally don’t think she was to hurt by him

Also I dont think either of them are emotionally in a state where they could even comprehend an apology for anything from each other ever about anything

So I think if Qrow apologized to her she’d just stare at him

So. Team STRQ pairings.

I had…assumed, not necessarily was totally convinced, but it made sense to me that the twins were a pairing, and then Tai & Summer were one.

Because with Raven’s semblance, finding her brother would be ridiculously easy. And given the mindset the Branwens had — that they were here to learn to kill Huntsmen — they’d for sure want to be teammates, to stay close. And under Oz’s cryptic, weird, seemingly randomized system, the only way to be sure they’re on the same team is if they’re partners.

But if Qrow’s semblance fired at the wrong moment? If Raven was trying to hide hers and thus waited a while to open a portal so she and her brother were for sure alone?

It would’ve been easy for pairs to be different.

Now, before? My second guess would’ve been Raven & Tai, Qrow & Summer. Not because you have to date your partner if it’s a teammate (though I was once on the Qrow is Ruby’s Dad train, which helped), but like — Tai and Raven probably did have a unique bond. I had assumed she was the teammate he was closest to while they were still Team STRQ. And there is a trend of the partner pairs also being romantic pairs, when there are any on the same team.

But now? Precisely to that end? I am 80% sure Raven’s partner was Summer. The fact it was Raven whom Summer asked to go with her on her suicide mission means something. The fact Summer stepped up to raise Raven’s kid, that Raven seemed to expect it after she left, means something.

The fact both of them failed the other so completely means something.

Plus, if one of the pairings was Raven & Summer, the other was Qrow & Tai which, given the state of their relationship, past and present, is hilarious to me. The one teammate Tai didn’t screw was his partner. And it’s also tragic, because despite having been the ones who stayed, being the only two left to look out for their family and children for many years, Qrow and Tai clearly do not get along.
