Unlocking Summer Opportunities: When to Start Searching for Internships
Introduction
As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, students everywhere start looking forward to spring break. While the prospect of vacations and relaxation is undoubtedly appealing, summer also presents a golden opportunity for personal and professional development through internships In today’s connected world, virtual internships and hiring participation has become important ways to gain hands-on experience and build a foundation for future success.

Benefits of vocational training
Internships offer many benefits that go beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom. Students are exposed to their chosen field firsthand, enabling them to apply theoretical skills in practical situations. Additionally, internships provide opportunities to develop important skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving, which are often overlooked in academic settings.
Virtual internship programs on the rise
In recent years, the internship landscape has changed dramatically with the rise of virtual internship programs. The digital age has enabled students to work in companies anywhere in the world, breaking down geographical barriers and expanding opportunities Virtual internships provide flexibility, and allow students to work from the comfort of their own home while still gaining experience which is valuable.
Time to start the investigation
The process of getting a summer internship starts long before the temperatures start to rise. To increase your chances of landing a coveted spot, it’s important to start your search early. Many companies, especially those with highly competitive internship programs, start accepting applications months in advance. The timeline for applying to virtual internship programs can vary, but a good rule of thumb is to start applying at least three to four months in advance of your intended start date.
Employee internship programs: The gateway to career success
While virtual internships offer flexibility, professional internships provide a structured and immersive experience. These programs are typically offered by established companies that offer meaningful learning opportunities. Participation in such programs is often a competitive process, with companies looking for the most talented and motivated applicants. This makes it important for students to start their search early, so that they have enough time to gather letters of recommendation, match their resume, and complete applications.
Tips for applying for a successful internship
Create a strong resume: Your resume is often the first impression a potential employer makes. Edit it to highlight relevant skills, experience and accomplishments. Consider obtaining feedback from career counsellors or advisors to ensure it properly reflects your requirements.
Leverage your network: Networking is a powerful tool in the business world. Reach out to professors, alumni and professionals in the industry of your choice to learn about career opportunities. Attend career fairs, workshops and networking events and expand your network.
Research companies: Choose companies that align with your business goals and values. Examine their internship programs, company culture, and recent initiatives. Not only will this knowledge help you prepare your applications, but it will also impress the recruiters during the interview process.
Interview preparation: Once you start hand inviting your interview, it is important to prepare well. Use common interview questions, delve into the company, and be prepared to talk about how your skills and experiences align with their needs.
Practice: Instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, focus on quality rather than quantity when applying for internships. Customize your applications for each position, outlining your true interests and qualifications.
Conclusion
Summer internships aren’t just a way to pass the time during free time—they’re an invaluable step toward future employability. Whether you choose a virtual internship program or a professional internship program, the key lies in starting the search early and approaching the process appropriately with an active, dedicated plan to open up summer opportunities.

Many art undergrads misunderstand how book design works or didn’t know it was ever a job. It is!!! [Notes below, for anyone interested in that career path because I heart book design]
1. For artists trying to get into in-house publishing, you are not the one responsible for hand drawing full cover illustrations [Childrens/Middle/YA/Romance/Fantasy], and if you were to do that in house, you’d be very underpaid. They freelance those jobs. More likely you could do hand lettering and less extensive elements that a stock photo couldn’t provide. Maybe even interior spots if they can’t find freelancers. For example, I could be asked in-house to draw a fore-edge. If you're interested in book illustration, you'd wanna work on getting freelance gigs or joining an agency.
2. It is heavy on Indesign, and there is no way to get in without that familiarity. You NEED to know Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign (and acrobat for pdf). It's not for people who are allergic to using standard design programs or do not know how to format digital text... Depending on the position, you could be formating a full wrap jacket or formatting 200+ pages of text. The main three types of designers are Cover, Production, and Interior. The jobs for all three could be held responsible under one designer, or two, or all of these responsibilities could be held. [Obvious] The tasks you're able to do depends on your title's specification and the publishing house your under as well as imprint, your department, the genres you work under. Childrens picture books tend to have one designer working on the front title, the interior text, and the full jacket.
OK to lay on the honesty, publishing is not THAT high paying, so none of us are getting rich. It is difficult to obtain an entry level job in any design field not just publishing, but not impossible. There is a high competition with very little jobs. In particular, design is few and far between. Luckily, It isn't as competitive as editorial!!! Before 2020, it was very NYC centric. TBH many people still are asked to move in person (with entry level salaries, gulp), and nyc residents are sometimes prioritized. But since covid, remote work has been far more common. Some houses are more remote friendly than others. Like all industry jobs, its heavy on networking (fucked up). Its very good to keep in touch with creative directors since many of them are also the hiring managers for positions. Most of them are hiring based off recomendations and the people who know you, and THAN once your in the radar they look at your portfolio.
#which is why every designer im pals with has been an intern at least once or twice or thrice#either in the big 5 or indie#that is networking central and actual experience to show for#or have worked in a college academic publishing job during the undergrad years#better to build exp during college than after which can be hard for art students because the work load is insane...#but there are summer programs!#I personally only got into book design seniro year and took an internship after graduating. But I'm scared for how much harder it could be#in the future sooooo I highkey recomend jumping to it sooner than later#because you could be AMAZING but the hiring process is cruel no matter your skills

#SORRY im mad about my stupid college again#WHY do they require so many internhip hours??????#no wait i KNOW why. bc the chef who runs the program is EVIL AND STUPID#he literally thinks he as a chef is gods gift to this earth. he thinks CHEFS are gods gift to this earth but only if they agree with him.#however. gods gift to this earth do NOT deserve breaks. ('chefs dont get breaks' is a direct quote)#he thinks all chefs should work like dogs and SUFFER. and the industry should never change#and he loves the power of being the program head. (and most students' advisor)#and he can say im preparing you to be the best!!!!! and get away with it#and he doesnt respect pastry chefs. and guess what i am hahahah#like i know the culinary industry is toxic and most chefs are jerks. but bakeries are very different from restaurants#so i thought i could handle some jerky chefs during school and get my degree and go work in a bakery#(i can handle some jerky chefs)#the problem was that a jerky chef ran the program as if you were already working in the worst restaurant environment imaginable#and he only taught like everyone wanted to be world renown chefs of 5 star parisian restaurants that take 4 years to get a reservation#(which is crazy that he thinks hes qualified to get other people to that level but ok.)#and thats great for people who want that! but some people (me) just want a cute little bakery!#also ! its advertised as a 2 year associates program#which. is true that you'll only get an associates degree out of it#but 2 years is including summer semesters. sorry i don't think thats how that works. i think thats 3 years#2 years for people who decide to do extra and take summer semesters.#and i think the only realistic way to complete the internship hours is to take an off semester and only do the internship#so you're not doing it at the same time as classes#but that adds a minimum of 1 semester and maximum 2#or if you cram the spring and fall semesters to have summer off and do the internship during summer#summer semesters are shorter. so youd have less weeks to complete the same amount of hours#it is simply not a 2 year program for the average person!!!!!!#i was IN COLLEGE FOR 2 YEARS!!!!!! AND I ONLY TOOK 1 (ONE) PASTRY CLASS!!!!!! I SHOULD'VE BEEN ABLE TO GRADUATE!!!!!!!!!!!#and what do you MEAN you expect me to be in college for 3 years and only get an associates degree out of it. no thank you#its almost like...... an associates degree requires 2 years of schooling........ and theres too much happening in this program.......#bc the man in charge of it is power hungry and wants to control people and thinks chefs need to be beat into shape.......

COMPANY WEBSITE PROFILE SAYS HIRED#anyway ig the hack is to NOT do practice interviews and to be honest but also stretch the truth and bs some questions for what seems right#also my interviewer really liked hearing about my high school's freshman program (older students being like their high school guide)#future (aka tomorrow) amber will have to deal with cancelling the interview i scheduled for a different application and withdrawing my other#applications bc i dont want to be offered anything else atm lol#(excited this is part time since im doing full enrollment w 17 units at uni + an internship i need to put 6-8 hours per week in starting#in august but i wanted a job that i could do long term (or semi long term) bc a consistent income would be nice)#anyway pray for me ill be working retail for the first time ever but im actually excited bc i dont mind the idea of retail work#amber's shit you can ignore

It’s almost a new school year and I’m moving to campus! You know what that means 😁 (time to send a billion emails to student organizations and ensembles and scholarship applications and set myself up for burnout in a few months ❤️)
#it’s okay I really like to be busy#well. not even that#I like to feel like I’m contributing positively to a community#and this is a whole new community! way bigger than my current one!#with so many dying clubs that I will shackle myself with the responsibility of becoming student leadership for bc nobody else wants to lol#it’s okay :’) it’s always good to put on resumes#they have an entomology club (bug club) but I fear it may’ve been abandoned last semester#and only two active student newspapers with very few members.. hm#I need an internship too so maybe I should apply for one with the school-run news outlets#instead of the mostly empty student-run ones lol#also I’m auditioning for like four choirs just AT the school#I’m gonna try to audition for some in the nearby area too#plus the opera program which I want to get into way more than choir. but still. any singing is good with me :3#PLUS hopefully I can squeeze some scholarships and resume stuff out of at least some of these extracurriculars… right……. sweats#anyway I’m rambling byeee#🤓posting
