anxiety, depression and/or being mentally and/or physically exhausted should always be a valid reason for any employee to take a day off without their paycheck being affected in any way, and also for any student to take a day off without their grade being affected in any way by the way

👩‍💻 How to Prep for an Important Presentation 🗃️
even if you don't start out on the right foot, every decision you make starting now can still ensure your success ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
last week, i scheduled an important meeting for the end of the day today for everyone on my team to roast review the plans i had made for our upcoming project. i wanted to give myself as much time as possible to prepare for it, but things don't always go according to plan. when that happens, don't give up. all it takes is one step in the right direction to change your trajectory 🌠
Have All Presentation Materials Ready
i was multi-tasking up until yesterday and overestimated my ability to finish preparing everything on top of writing code and bug investigations, so i finished within hours of the meeting 🤡
Get Enough Sleep The Night Before
i went bouldering and then had dinner with friends last night, so not only did i not go to bed early, but i also had arms/wrists so sore that typing up all my presentation materials that i left to finish the day of became unusually difficult 🤡
Circulate Agenda / Relevant Documents
i know exactly one person besides myself reads the circulated documents prior to any meeting, but i circulated the completed document two hours before. at the same time, i know more notice would have been ideal not just for attendees, but for me to get early feedback that would've allowed me to present better 🥴
Practice Presenting, Answering FAQs
i had time for one run-through and while i couldn't help but be flustered during some portions of the meeting, i definitely felt more prepared than i would have been without any practice and honestly, my peace of mind and striving for my personal best is what's most important to me ☺️
Be Open to Actively Solicit Feedback
i notice there is a world of difference in response at times when you say "i am open to any feedback or questions, so feel free to jump in" vs. "does anyone have any questions, thoughts, concerns before i move to the next section" or even specifically calling people out based on what you know to be their area of expertise! ☺️
Post-Meeting Tasks, Follow-ups
got (positive!! 🙏) feedback from my manager ☺️
organized meeting notes 🗃️
scheduled follow-up meeting ⏰
reached out to other colleagues whose input we still need 💬
🍃✉️: whether you're preparing a presentation for school or work, hope this helps! 💚 do you have any go-tos when preparing presentations? 👀

Hello femme! Different anon here, but do you have advice on how to connect with people and do networking in a new industry when you can only do it online? I live in a small town and if people see me doing in person networking, someone can mentioned it to my boss and I can get fired and I’m trying to change industries too. I’d love to move out from here so that’s also a reason why it needs to be done networking. I know there are places to do networking online but I’ve not found anyplace but Evernote or something similar to that name. Thank you ❤️
Hi love!
I would say LinkedIn is the best place, but platforms like Meetup (you can attend virtual events) Facebook Groups, and even Reddit, Slack, or Discord can be great places to start.
Try to find virtual events/interest + networking groups in your current/desired field or industry and feel free to reach out personally with a thoughtful connect request via email/LinkedIn. While there's no guarantee with networking, these options can have as much (or more) potential than IRL networking in many cases due to the seemingly endless connections you can make via the Internet/social media.
Hope this helps xx

working girl diaries // habits to maintain sanity ✒️🖤
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we have a saying in our department, "if one person succeeds, it's the success of the team, and if one person fails, it's the failure of the team." that's the root of no-blame culture that allows everyone to grow and learn, keeps toxicity and burnout-inducing stress at bay, and fosters an attitude of having each other's backs. whenever i made a mistake, i used to be very hard on myself, which makes me much less productive. over the years and with amazingly supportive mentoring from my former manager, i learned to put my mistakes in context to not only improve, but also move forward. so today i felt especially frustrated at a current superior's hypocritical way of handling a situation that goes against all of the above. i'm also frustrated with myself for allowing their attitude to get to me and falling back into my old, counter-productive ways. i'm trying not to let it weigh me down anymore.

💌: i really hope there isn't any more drama since i have to start prepping for final exams soon (not to mention actually taking them 💀) if there is... well, i suppose i'll just have to deal with it 🙃

I received some great advice from a mentor a while back on leveling up your career that really changed my perspective on my own standing. She broke down career growth into three main categories in terms of how you position yourself to your manager.
Stage 1 - You bring problems. When you're at the beginning of a career or the start of a new job where you're still learning the ropes, you will bring problems without solutions. At this stage, you're going to your manager for solutions. This is the learning stage, where you're aiming to absorb as much information as you can to begin building your skills.
Stage 2 - You bring problems, with possible solutions. They might not be the right solutions all the time, but you're headed in the right direction. Your manager will guide you in validating your solutions, or course correcting. By now, you have a good enough grasp of the fundamentals and responsibilities of your job title to think about the bigger picture. You're still learning, but you're moving towards higher level problem-solving.
Stage 3 - You bring solutions. At this point in your job or career, you have developed a great understanding of your responsibilities and its challenges. You have enough experience to know what works and what doesn't and you can see the bigger picture. You solve problems before they even get to your manager and sometimes even follow up with a summary of the problem and what you did to solve it. Things are better because of you, and your presence is felt and acknowledged.
In reflecting on my own experiences, I've found the above to be true in mirroring my own career growth. It doesn't come quick, and it doesn't come easy but it's a great framework to understand your next steps to growing your career and securing a promotion. The above is an oversimplification of years of hard work, but it's a great framework to use in assessing where you stand in your journey.
