Nico di Angelo headcanons
- He was very confused the firts time that someone called him "Emo"
he doesn't have a clue of what the fuck is that, he just bought up the clothes and accessories that he looks at and thinks "cool"
It was a karen who say that btw, the fact that she only was saying nonsense prob was guilty of Nico confusion too
- both Acts of service and Gifs are his way to show affection to others
He often helps his close friends and Hazel with anything they need, he also would get whatever thing that they expressed to want or need even in the slightest way possible, it doesn't matter if it's expensive af or hard to obtain for any reason, he's getting that thing for later wrap it in pretty paper .
He also buys whatever that he sees and reminds him to someone he loves, New rome postal service is tired of getting packages of the pluto ambassador for the praetor Levesque atleats 3 times at week ( that's not all the things that he gets for hazel, it's just the ones that he doesn't give her face to face)
- He's a polyglot ( i kinda talk about it here)
It was a part of his education back in the 1930s so he doesn't remember a lot of how he learned most of the languages he spokes, or even remembers that he actually spoke that especific language until he is in a situation were is needed
Something funny it's that one of the languages he taked longer to realize that he spoke it, it was greek, like, modern greek, he doesn't know how to feel about that
He also has a inherent understanding of dead languages so he's really good at read ol text of any kind
He also it's kinda a nerd about etymology
- He has a lot of beauty marks
Like, a lot of them, the most noticeable ones ofc are the in his face ( one at the bottom/side of his left eye and above the right eyebrow and two at the left side of his nose and bottom of his lips) but those things are everywhere in his body
- A lot of people feels that his appearance seems out of place, like, something ood to look at without an apparent reason
The things starts to make sense when you put his hair back with a bit of gel and give him a suit, then you realize that he looks like one of those pictures of grandpas when they were young
It can be a bit eerily because, in fact , he is actually from the same generation of those grandpas, that's why he looks like them but due the Lotus he's a teenager instead of an old man
the fact that his appearance it's the definition of a haunting beauty contributes to all that, he's beautiful, there's no a sigle appice of doubt about that, but you can compare the feeling that he evokes to the feeling of looking at a gothic church or the one of being at one of those old and Rich graveyards full of angel's scultures but cover in moss after years of abandonment , beautiful and stunning but also imponent and bone freezing
But hey!! It's also cool, and you can say that he's the antitesis of an iphone face
- Kinda related to the previous one, but his eyes are always changing colours.
It's not like piper tough, her eyes are literally a multicolor spectrum, Meanwhile, Nico's are more like his eyes being shallowed by the deep and dark waters full of misery of the styx, deep ebony black but in constant movement and little forms that looks like ice sublimation
Still, sometimes in moment of pure joy or when hes relaxed his natural color is visible, being a mostly brown iris with little details of grey and deep green like the bark or the fruit of olives
- Has a large collection of silly bands ( you know , the 2000s elastic bands with form of anything you can imagine?) think about any collection of those things and he has it
He also knows how to do those bracelets of bands btw, he uses his fingers for it and as a result he always has the strangulation marks or bruces
- He and Drew ended up being friends
He had that little hunch Drew's attitude having more behind that she just being a Bitch without reason, he was totally right
They aren't attached to the hip or something, there's a lot of things about each other that they don't know or they didn't bothered to ask, but they thrusts each other and are close enough to talk about their life and things they feel can't talk with anyone else every once in a while
Nico's is also drew personal manikin/ken doll for her fashion design projects, he isn't complaining tough, all the clothes are stunning
- Other of his friends is Clovis from hypnos cabin
A lot of people doesn't understand how they have a lot of anecdotes about things they did together, because Clovis is always half sleep or straight up in another world or something during the day
The last part is they key, they literally are in other world, or something like that, dream magic has potential to take the phrase "live your dreams" to another level
- Full grown up , He isn't tall or short, he's just (technically )average
He's 5'7... It taked a time for him to grow up to that point though, he was stuck in 5'5 for a while until he was around 17/18yo
Still, he looks a bit short at the side of most people around him, it's not his fault 90% of the people he knows are fucking giraffes
The fact that a lot of the boys he falls for are... Well, pretty tall ( Solace, Torrington, Grace, yk that you're the ones im talking about) isn't helping neither.
- He has a transatlantic accent ( alongside with a slight Italian accent)
Is a result of learning English as a second language and having both american and British people like reference and not something made on purpose
Is almost vanished after being living in America at the XXI century for the past few years, but you can still hear it in the way he say some words and the fact that his idiolect mix indiscriminately British and American words
Btw, something funny of that is that if you let his guy at the Uk for enough he would totally turn into the other side of the coin and now he picked up the accent of the region were he is at the moment
- He has a wii and a DS ( he later got a 3DS when it was released), nobody knows how the fuck is that he isn't chased by monster 24/7 using that thing
He also end up with a insane amount of amibos once they were released in 2014
- For some reason his collections of anything are in those vitrines that the grandmas uses for the pretty dishes
- He got the standar lobe piercing
usually he just have a pair of black diamons studs ( kinda looks like the diamons by the yard earring of Tiffanys) but sometimes he uses a bajoran or a pair of drops
- Even whe he is older his job is basically being his father second had and ambassador, but a general concense is that he is also a really god tourist guide
Probably he would be turned into a god after he passes away for just be doing exactly what he already was doing as a demigod, just with immortality.
-Despite being Italian and the stereotypes, he was a disaster in the kitchen, the kind of person that you say them to boil 2 glasses of water for the rice and the next thing you now is that 2 cristals glases are straight up in the stove
in his defense, he at best can remember see his Nanny doing something or being with her sister and mother doing some kind of dessert ( his only contribution to that was eating the chocolate)
Now he may not be a five stars chef but he can do pretty good stuff sometimes, he's trying
- He can make pretty concerning "old fashioned" coments sometimes
Alright, he is not an asshole ( at least non on purpose) or something like that, but sometimes while talking he would say things that are the daily reminder of the fact that this guy over there is a white ass boy raised in the 30's decade with the addition of being Born in a pretty much wealthy and probably Noble family and who's whole social interaction with other people that aren't hundred of years old beings has been limited, and that leads to his perspective of society being a bubble of privilege and old high society ethics.
Like, the most of the time if he say something really... Questionable, is because he really never has stopped to think about it and he is just saying what they teach him ,was normal at the time, or is just a comment made of pure ignorance mouth-is-fasther-that-the-brain-tipe.
Sadly for him ( and luckily for the rest of the people that have to hear him) 90% of the times hazel is close when he say that kind of stuff and two of Three times he ends up being hit by the closest thing that was at her hand or for one of her shoes if nothing else is available, the other time its a 50/50, he realizes that he just said something that isn't right or hazel just look at him in full deception mode.

TMAGP 39 analysis: Dreams in seven stages
SPOILERS. Please listen to the episode first, I'll leave my analysis under the cut. This feels big. It will also be a long post so buckle up.
Yes, the episode was heartbreaking and I do feel emotions, but I'm also way too deep into the alchemy rabbit hole to comment on the emotional impact. So I'll get right into the meat of it all, ie. Alice's statement. I was excepting to get a pure fear-based statement, and you can certainly read it as a mixture of the Buried, Corruption, Flesh and maybe Desolation. But it feels oddly fragmented to represent the fears, and that's because it's instead an almost perfect analogy for a transmutation. Let me first walk you through the seven stages of the Great Work (the number of stages vary from text to text but I'm going with seven) and explain how they relate to the statement, and then I'll get to what I think this all means.
1. Calcination
Alice is wrapped in a curtain and begins to heat up, much like how matter is trapped inside a container and burned down to ashes. Psychologically, this stage signifies the beginning of the ego death, and it burns away your conscious mind and the rigid societal masks, such as Alice's customer service role in the dream.
"I start to struggle, first in anger and then in panic as I grow hotter and hotter and feel myself begin to suffocate." [...] "I can’t breathe any more and it’s so warm and… wet. The cloth is sodden and warm and heavy."
The heating wasn't always done by direct fire, it was sometimes achieved by encasing the matter within other substances and letting its "natural heat" do the work. This would be a much slower process and wouldn't necessarily reduce the matter to ashes (but would nevertheless reveal its body or Salt).
2. Dissolution
Alice's ego has stopped resisting the transformation, and she's beginning to dissolve. At this point, alchemists would reintroduce moisture into the remaining matter or Salt (sometimes inserting its own sublimated Mercury back into it, sometimes purifying it with other liquids). This is what Jung would equate to dissolving into the dark mercurial sea of the unconscious.
"There is a deep, low roar all around me, rumbling and rushing in all directions; incessant and overwhelming. Soon I can’t tell the difference between the noise around me and the rushing of my own blood in my ears. They are one and the same… swelling and ebbing in time together."
This is the purifying water rushing in and Alice dissolving into it, her own blood becoming one with the solution.
"I recognise what is wrapped around me, what is shrouding me and smothering me and will not let me free: Living, sweating flesh."
As a side note: This is both confusing and interesting to me, because Bonzo's been associated with sweating skin a couple of times now. In alchemy, "sweat" or "dew" is often associated with the moisture that forms on the outside of the glass vessel when it's heated. Not sure what to make of this, but it feels connected. Especially with the curtain also being both wet and warm. I'm yet to find the perfect text that ties skin to alchemy.
3. Separation
At this stage, we can finally separate the matter into its components, find its true essence and separate it from the rest. Similarly, Alice is able to locate the source of her pain and fear within herself:
"I reach for it but it’s burrowed too deep into me. I just want to grab it and rip it out, tear out whatever is inside me, throw the festering mass as far from me as I can." [...] "It is me and I am it and I am trapped within myself and no matter what I do I will never escape this living tomb."
Psychologically, this is the moment Jung describes as encountering our own Shadow in the unconscious.
4. Conjunction
Perhaps the most important stage in an alchemical work. It's when two opposing substances are combined in a union. The purified aspects of the matter are brought back together, the gold is unified with the silver, Jung's contrasexual archetypes (Animus and Anima) are reconciled with each other. Symbolically, it's the union of the king and queen, sun and moon, Sulphur and Mercury, mind and body, or...
Sam and Alice.
"You are there and we are together again. There is no speech, no contact beyond the crushing embrace of skin and bone to which we belong but I can feel you within myself and feel myself within you. And while I lie foetal and squirming in this bloody rushing meat you stand cracked and sharp, enshrined in bone but we are together… together…"
5-7 Fermentation, Distillation and Coagulation
The last stages are intermingled and run through pretty fast in the statement. Basically, in fermentation the matter is let to rot and decompose (ie. putrefied) so that new life can be born out of the remains. In distillation, liquid is extracted from the matter, after which it's cooled and condensed and then sometimes reintroduced to the mixture in a series of circular processes. Eventually, the matter is coagulated, and it takes its final, physical form. Psychologically, it's where the self emerges through integration of the conscious ego and the unconscious shadow.
"Then it begins to cool, the overbearing heat slowly giving way to a pallid chill as the once pliant muscle stiffens like cured leather around and between us. We can feel the liquid pooling beneath then slowly rising, tepid and viscous as the skin wilts and sags upon us, dragging us down into bubbling putrescence below. The body, our body, rots, warping and wilting and bulging and melting, around us and within us, sloughing off and away leaving us, only us, naked and withered and bleeding and starving and shitting and dying… but together. Always together."
So what does this all mean?
Now's the time for my hear-me-outs. If we are to accept that the reality rift that ended the Eyepocalypse has (mostly) banished the fear entities from that universe, and that the fears are potentially bleeding into other dimensions (such as our TMAGP one)... who's to say that it's a one-way street? What if the fears are bleeding in, but at the same time the alchemy is bleeding out?
Apparently, there are now people in the TMA universe who keep revisiting their domains in their dreams. As we have seen, dreams are a recurring theme on both sides of the rift, and I think it's also bringing people closer to the border. Dreaming and meditation are considered states that bring one's mind closer to the collective unconscious (or the mercurial sea), which is why archetypes often manifest in our dreams. If you recall in episode 17, the anger management guy was transported into another dimension when he was meditating in a doctor's waiting room that (and this was specifically pointed out to us) didn't have a clock on the wall. So he's sitting in a definitionally liminal space with no sense of time, and his mind was in an altered state of consciousness. My point is, the dreams are not caused by the fears, they are bringing these people closer to the boundary between the realities, where they get their fix of whatever dark domain-induced fantasy it is they're clinging to. (Almost like something's reflecting their twisted wishes, hmm.)
I feel like I have to revisit the case about that Beholding-obsessed victim of bullying. There were some oddities about that statement where my alchemy bells were ringing, but I brushed it off since I thought we were only dealing with the fears on this side. However, with this statement being such an obvious allegory, I feel like there might be something more for me to dig into.
P.S. This episode truly did break my heart. I just wish she could let go.
Edit: After writing this I realised that it's also the five stages of grief, which is why the final three stages were sort of jumbled together in the fifth and final stage.

Propaganda
Greta Garbo (Camille, Anna Karenina, Queen Christina)—Enigmatic and alluring and made me bisexual. The perfect example of the eroticism in silent films that literally transcends text. Could literally not change anything about her expression but you knew by looking at her eyes what she was thinking. She’s so gorgeous.
Kay Francis (Jewel Robbery, I Loved A Woman, British Agent)— kay francis was an icon of glamor in her time and a top star of the 30s - she was the highest-paid actress at warner bros from 1930 to 1936. she tended to play characters who were charming, sophisticated, and elegantly dressed, and starred in at least one legitimate masterpiece, the sublime 1932 comedy trouble in paradise. her first big role was in the marx brothers movie the cocoanuts in 1929, and she and william powell made seven movies together between 1930 and 1932. even in her sillier movies she always elevates the material with her charm and presence - she never phones it in and there’s a sort of warm, knowing wittiness about her. a really good short promo from a retrospective of her movies that i think really gets her Vibe across
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Kay Francis:

Jewel Robbery clip
"From 1932 through 1936, Francis was the queen of the Warner Bros. lot, and, increasingly, her films were developed as star vehicles. By 1935, Francis was one of the highest-paid actors, earning a yearly salary of $115,000, dwarfing the $18,000 Bette Davis – who would one day occupy Francis's dressing room – made. From 1930 to 1937, Francis appeared on the covers of 38 film magazines, second only to child sensation Shirley Temple's 138." Source: Wikipedia. Kay Francis is like the MOST FAMOUS Actress from the 1930s you've never heard of--and it was her and Norma Shearer who wore and made classic the 1930s tall, slim, bias cut silhouette. She ALSO has a WHOLE PODCAST episode devoted to her life and career in Hollywood--it's fascinating! She is both tough and a total wet cat.
Tumblr media
One of the TALLEST Warner Brother stars at 5’9” and known as a “clothes horse” for her glamorous roles wearing the height of 1930s fashion. She fell out of popularity in the 40s, but her 30s work sizzles. The scene with her and Herbert Marshall in Trouble in Paradise where she says she doesn’t care about his reputation (because she’d rather sleep with him?) HAWOOGA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
melted my gay heart with her butch look in stolen holiday
Tumblr media
"My life? Well, I get up at a quarter to six in the morning if I'm going to wear an evening dress on camera. That sentence sounds a little ga-ga, doesn't it? But never mind, that's my life ... As long as they pay me my salary, they can give me a broom and I'll sweep the stage. I don't give a damn. I want the money ... When I die, I want to be cremated so that no sign of my existence is left on this earth. I can't wait to be forgotten." —From Kay Francis's private diaries, c. 1938
Tumblr media
Garbo:
Tumblr media
A cold-ass Swedish WLW Sphinx. Had plans to murder Hitler that she never got around to. "She will remain always a child of vikings, moved about by a snowy dream."
First of all, she's on the money; that's how much of a treasure she is. She's beautiful in such a distinct way you need very few lines to draw her. (Drawing by Einar Nerman) She managed to be mesmerizing in both silent and sound films. She kissed a woman in Queen Christina (and probably several more in real life). She was super dry and really funny in Ninotchka. She got the hell out of Hollywood and stayed out, living for almost 50 years after her retirement.
Tumblr media
Garbo is one of the many reasons why I'm gay. If you haven't seen Queen Christina please do, She is so gender in that film. Also her accent makes it sound like she's always talking in cursive and it's so hypnotic (or at least I think so).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's a gay introvert, like all of us here on Tumblr.
Tumblr media
Mysterious and aloof, charismatic and enigmatic, with beautiful androgynous characteristics, Garbo is undoubtedly the most eccentric and unique Hollywood vintage star. Her aversion to fame and stardom makes her even more desirable to the audience, and her insane chemistry with the camera, an actress one of a kind! Her particularity and her oddity is what discerns her strongly from her hollywood co workers at the time, noone was like her and would never be like her. I think, to the utmost extent, that she deserves the title of the hottest vintage star, even though that would be an understatement of what she is!
Tumblr media
SO gorgeous, her thick Swedish accent makes will turn your brain into pudding
Tumblr media
Probabaly a lesbian, absolutely a mood when she retired

Comments on 2x08!!! Well… spoilers, obviously:)
.
.
.
.
Being buried like that is my absolute worst fear holy shit
Armand painting himself as the poor little victim makes me livid lol
Louis thinking about what he could havw changed and always arriving at kissing Lestat?!!! 😭😭😭😭
Armand reviving Louis but letting him tonrise by himself *insert middle finger emoji*
Louis going a bit mad - holy shit. sooooooo creepy I love it. And him preparing and getting their asses!!! Sublime!
Thank god Louis takes her diaries and dress 😭
Calling “Francis“ LMAO and with Come To Me toooooo 🙌😈😈
That sliver of light separating Louis and Armand… and Armand just continues to lie….
Sorry not believing the dungeon scene. Lestat just… sitting there? Contemplating and citing Magnus??? Mhhhh. Louis… threatening him and then… passionate kiss and leaving with Armand? That’s…. another Armand fanfic. Sorry, but … lol. No. No way. OR it’s edited and Louis bargained for Lestat‘s life there. As for Claudia’s back then. For example Louis could have burned Lestat there and that is why he was so apprehensive and fearful in SF. But this??? Nahhhhhhh - but: We‘ll see. In s3 apparently ^^ I could also see Louis burning him there or in the theater in a rage, but we’ll see. Anyways: this??? Nope. :)
Also, that blood of Akasha nod is very weird
Ah yes - the disassembly has started 😈
Get him Daniel!!!!!
There goes the broadcasting theory 🤓
And the soldiers!!!!! Yesssss
Not believing the rehearsing btw
LESTAT SAVED LOUISSSSSSSSSS Yesssss baby 🙌 I KNEW IT
Look at them bleeding ears 🥹 (also Armand (supposedly) would have let Louis die. Right. We‘re alllll clear on that, right.)
77 YEARS BASED ON A SEISMIC LIE (ooof!!!!)
Oof Louis is maddddd
Yes get his ass. Also him threatening Armand 👀
Hurricane Odetta! 2021!!!! The crime tour was funny. And then… Moss house. Implied fledgling but… no way
Yeah. Rip my heart out while you’re at it. JAM just have the energy for them. And god… Lestat breaking on remembering Claudia burn 😭 and the embrace on him calling himself her father.
Lestat looks like healing from burns still 👀 (also him using Siri?!!!)
Louis apologizing for making Lestat miserable
Because he didn’t know it was a gift 😭😭😭😭
That embrace. The looks. It’s just raw 😭😭😭
And to leave us like that the BASTARDS!!!!
Daniel!!!! Sweety!!!! Love the sass!!!Look at your eyes!!!! But yeah no, Armand did not turn you out of spite lol
But - calling it: contested NOLA meeting (OR Lestat is in Dubai either Louis)
Louis (supposedly) returning to Dubai alone… I get it. Louis needs to find himself. And honestly?? After Claudia asking him who he is outside of Claudia and Lestat? To say: “I own the night“????? ROCKS. 🙌🙌🙌
Also: Louis challenging the other vampires to come and get him - well - with the s3 announcement??? - HERE COMES THE VAMPIRE LESTAT!!!
I‘m not crying and grinning happily, you are…
*sniffs*
Episode Insider:
Jacob texting that pic - LMAO
Assad: All lf the facade […] has been shown to be a complete lie
Jacob: Lestat would have saved Claudia if he‘d had the energy 😭
Jacob: There’s things said at the end that nobody will ever know other than me and Sam. RIP ME 💀
OKAY. I‘m … good. Happy. Satisfied. Season 3 - here we fucking come!!!!

Gabriel specifically told Marinette to make sure Adrien never knew he was Hawk Moth/Shadow Moth/Monarch. He didn't show any remorse for the way he treated Adrien. If he actually loved Adrien, he wouldn't have treated him like an obedient drone for the last few months of his life.
A wise man once said "He may have been your father boy, but he wasn't your daddy."
Allright, @crimson-ace lets start by getting the obvious out the way: Clicking the Anonymous question button doesnt work when you send the ask 1 minute after leaving a comment, and immediatly before leaving another comment on the same post you are talking about. You cannot layer a troll-sandwitch with an anonymity filling. Now to give you more grace then you deserve, given that all signs point to 'obvious troll'. Im nonetheless going to abide by Hanlons razor and give you a last benefit of the doubt.
While i have a lot of negative feelings about the decision to write an abuser as a complex figure with nuanced emotion in a childrens show that is notorious for its inability to manage pay-offs to basic concepts. I nonetheless need you to understand: 1-Abuse is complicated, and not all abuse comes from a place of malice. Gabriel can be both an abuser and have genuine, dying regrets about the strain he put on his relationship. These are not mutually exclusive traits. 2-How often in cannon does gabriel actually treat adrien like a drone/slave? Because those moments that involve ring use are very much fewer and further between then most of you seem to think. (most of them arent even cannonical to the timeline, occuring in Ephemeral, Chat Blanc and similar. And even then i cannot help but notice that bringing them up in an attempt to distract from Marinette's 3-4 paterns of on-screen Catdrienabuse might be likely to backfire
3- At no point in that post did I ever defend Gabriel. In fact the only bit of that post that described the actual reality of the events that happend rather then the fandoms deliberate, malicious misreading OF the scene, explicitly says that the few moments are not enough to redeem Gabriel. While TA might think that Gabriel 'died redeemed'. Neither I, You anon, nor the character of Gabriel himself hold that opinion. 4-There is a difference between gabriel technically asking that his crimes be covered up to protect adriens memories of the good days, and marinette's choice to go way above and beyond that request to manufacture the big 'hero' lie. There is a difference between 'dont tell them I was a supervillain' and 'tell them I was secretly the hero and personally saved the world from the guy who almost started WWIII in New York'. Gabriel did not ask to be turned into a saint. That was wholy and fully a Marinette decision. 5-Even if gabriel had asked to be made into a hero (which i need to reiterate, he explicitly did not), that would not free Marinette (the person the post is actually about if you hadnt noticed) from acocuntability for her choices in maintaining the lie... such as: Murdering Adrien in cold blood Emotionally manipulating Sublime to prevent Adrien from getting a support network outside herself, absolve marinette of her decision in Revalator to mind-wipe Alya rather then face accountability, otherwise wash marinette's hands from any other crimes against adrien's right to self-determination she's inevitably going to commit as-of-yet-unnaired episodes in the upcoming season. If you genuinely think that post was me defending Gabriel? You need to read it again, that post was about only one thing and one thing only: The fact that the fandom has wildly reinterpreted what happened in that scene because they'd rather rewrite cannon and erase Marinette's choices and decisions in the story, Then risk having to accept accept that Marinette , according to the text of the show, supposed to be considered fully responsible for the various gaslightings, manipulations and on-screen murders she's comitting this season. But her stans (that, i presume, includes you) would rather reduce this character, textually stated to be 'considered fully mature' in the eyes of magic and 'already the best possible version of herself' to an easily-manipulated, spineless perpetual-victim. Rather then engage with the fact that the character is being written (and has for been so for 3 seasons straight) as a selfish, manipulative controllfreak who lacks the ability or desire to respect the agency and personhood of others.

Jonny Greenwood:
"Every art girl's (and boy's) wet dream"
"He wrote the tourist. That's all you need."
"Repeat from my Thom propaganda but he was a part of it so anyways. I had a dream once where I met him and Thom on the street and asked them to sign my Pablo Honey CD, so Thom pushed me into open traffic and I got hit by a car and died and Jonny laughed his ass off. 10/10, my last sight before death was his beautiful face laughing."
"I could probably snap him like a twig but I want to marry him and have 3 children with him before I do that"
"Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose 1/5 of Radiohead. Choose 1/5 of In Rainbows. Choose the man who wrote weird fishes, both Greenwood sisters ,the man in South Park, his telecaster and the stickers on it. Choose the bug Jacqueline Kennedy, his love for literature and poetry, and his lovely lisp. Choose his sublime score for Phantom Thread and his husband Paul Thomas Anderson. Choose the weird amount of straight men who thirst over him in the YouTube comment section. Choose his jawbone. Choose the most pretentious, unpretentious member of the band. Choose his silky hair and his (probably) Dove shampoo. Choose his great knowledge of music theory and how he often disregards it. Choose Astroboy's biggest fanboy (minus maybe Thom. Choose a very hot Alex James who eloped with a fish. Choose Jonny Greenwood. Choose your future. Choose life… Involuntary Trainspotting reference but please vote Jonny over Wario. Oh, and( even though Jonny lives in Italy at the moment), I live in Oxford and if I meet him, I'll tell him that he won."
"He keeps chickens guys, CHICKENS"
"I'm a straight guy but no joke Jonny is hot tbh maybe it's cuz he looks like a chick but like damnnnn"
"He's so gorgeous....kinda like an ant 😍😍😍😍"
Mike Patton:
"Mike didn't consistently wear BDSM masks matched with boiler suits and lick Trevor Dunn on stage just to lose this bracket. Also, if you don't think he's hot in every which way, you clearly haven't seen this: https://youtu.be/gjEbHBafvm0 or this: https://youtu.be/i9_hCjcFNO0 or this: https://youtu.be/Kfq7wHJu21c"

Deborah Turbeville (1932-2013), a fashion photographer representing postwar America, has created a collection of works "Le Passé Imparfait" (English version "Past Imperfect 1978 --1997"). Since the 70's, Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and others have transformed fashion photography with innovative works that portray the strength and beauty of women in avant-garde, while Turbeville and Sarah Moon. From a female perspective, Moon has become a contributor to the sublimation of fashion photography into art, capturing the delicacy and cuteness of women, which is mysterious and fantastic. In Japan, he also works on the images and visuals of Comme des Garcons in the 1980s, and fans who love this fantastic atmosphere are incessant. Although he died of lung cancer in 2013, this book is a collection of works that summarizes the trajectory of 20th century Turbeville published by Steidl before his life, and also includes a collage of Diana Vreeland. ..

Juneteenth Flags
This cc object was produced as a selective clone using Sims 4 Studio.
Item Description:
Swatches 1 and 2 are the official Juneteenth flags that were created in 1996 by Ben Haith, founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation, along with contributions from Verlene Hines, Azim, and Eliot Design. The Arc of red symbolizes a new horizon with new opportunities and promising futures for Black Americans. The Star is a nod to Texas, the Lone Star State where Juneteenth celebrations originated. The Star also symbolizes the freedom of every Black American. The Burst surrounding the star symbolizes a nova, a new beginning for all. The colors Red, White, and Blue symbolize that the American Slaves and their descendants are Americans.
Swatch 3 is the Pan African Flag which was created in 1920 by the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League, led by Marcus Garvey. This flag serves as a unifying symbol for Black people around the world. The Red represents the blood shed for liberation by all people of Black African ancestry. The Black represents the people of Black Ancestry. The Green represents the abundant and vibrant natural wealth of Africa.

3/3 people add the image description to the original posts in plain text, so now you get to see my new design for the Sphere even though I'm not done writing the short story yet, which will be posted to @neopronouns-in-action
This version of the sphere is named Kormance, and uses the pronouns xet/xev/xel/xevself, which are used like he/him/his/himself:
Replace he with xet
Replace him with xev
Replace his with xel
Replace himself with xevself
EX:
"He is going to adopt a new puppy soon, as soon as he gets a fence set up around his yard so the puppy can go outside without him having to walk it. His uncle is going to help set up the fence, since he has a set of power tools he's letting him use, since he lost his. He's going to buy toys and train the puppy himself."
Becomes:
"Xet is going to adopt a new puppy soon, as soon as xet gets a fence set up around xel yard so the puppy can go outside without xev having to walk it. Xel uncle is going to help set up the fence, since he has a set of power tools he's letting xev use, since xet lost xel. Xet's going to buy toys and train the puppy xevself."
this is not actually a scene from the short story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: A three panel comic, showing A Square and the Sphere from Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. A Square is a 2D square with purple and blue insides, with blobs for organs in different shades of pink and purple. Kormance the Sphere is a light red sphere with blue and darker red spots and diamond markings, with sharp teeth. Xet has a single diamond shaped eye, with blue and black diamonds inside it. Xet has two arms, one ending at the elbow unevenly. Both characters are sitting on tall stools with yellow and orange cushions, while the Sphere uses a short rod to point at a chalk board marked in blue white and gold, showing the progression from a point, to a line (3) to a square (3 squared), to a cube (3 cubed). Panel 1 has Kormance the Sphere asking, "So do you finally understand the mathematical progression now?" A Square replies, "Yes, and I'm ready to learn about the 4th Dimension now", with a smiley emoticon. After panel 1, the cushions on the stools become the same green as the chalkboard. Panel 2 has Kormance staring at A Square with a blank expression, saying nothing. Panel 3 has Kormance with arms lowered, mouth agape, asking, "…What?". A Square is lost in thought, thinking, "A Fourth Dimension…with a sublime creature made of cubes…where we will look down and see the insides of all Solid things…some more spacious space…some more dimensionable dimensionality…what next? What about 5D? Why stop there? 6D! 7D! 8D!" End ID.]
For every $10 donated to a Palestinian relief fund, I will make another character design like this to be public domain!

Rassam Cylinder, a ten-sided clay cylinder that was created in c. 643 BC, during the reign of King Ashurbanipal (c. 685 BC - 631 BC) who ruled the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 669 - 631 BC.
It was discovered in the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh, near Mosul, present-day Iraq, by Hormuzd Rassam (3 October 1826 - 16 September 1910) in 1854.
In over 1,300 lines of cuneiform text, the cylinder records nine military campaigns of Ashurbanipal, including his wars with Egypt, Elam and his brother, Shamash-shum-ukin.
It also records his accession to the throne and his restoration of the Palace of Sennacherib.
The cylinder is the most complete chronicle on the life of Ashurbanipal.
There are some extracts from the cylinder below:
"I am Ashurbanipal, offspring of Ashur and Bêlit, the oldest prince of the royal harem, whose name Ashur and Sin, the lord of the tiara, have named for the kingship from earliest (lit., distant) days, whom they formed in his mother's womb, for the rulership of Assyria; whom Shamash, Adad and Ishtar, by their unalterable (lit., established) decree, have ordered to exercise sovereignty.
Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, the father who begot me, respected the word of Ashur and Bêlit-ilê (the Lady of the Gods), his tutelary (divinities), when they gave the command that I should exercise sovereignty.
In the month of Airu, in the month of Ea, the lord of mankind, the twelfth day, an auspicious day, the feast day of Gula, at the sublime command which Ashur, Bêlit, Sin, Shamash, Adad, Bêl, Nabû, Ishtar of Nineveh, Queen of Kidmuri, Ishtar of Arbela, Urta, Nergal, Nusku, uttered, he gathered together the people of Assyria, great and small, from the upper to (lit., and) lower sea.
That they would accept (lit., guard) my crown princeship, and later my kingship, he made them take an oath by the great gods, and so he strengthened the bonds (between them and me)....
By the order of the great gods, whose names I called upon, extolling their glory, who commanded that I should exercise sovereignty, assigned me the task of adorning their sanctuaries, assailed my opponents on my behalf, slew my enemies, the valiant hero, beloved of Ashur and Ishtar, scion of royalty, am I.
Egyptian Campaign:
"In my first campaign I marched against Magan, Meluhha, Taharqa, king of Egypt and Ethiopia, whom Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, the father who begot me, had defeated, and whose land he brought under his sway.
This same Taharqa forgot the might of Ashur, Ishtar and the other great gods, my lords, and put his trust upon his own power.
He turned against the kings and regents whom my own father had appointed in Egypt.
He entered and took residence in Memphis, the city which my own father had conquered and incorporated into Assyrian territory.
A swift courier came to Nineveh and reported to me.
At these deeds, my heart became enraged, my soul cried out. I raised my hands in prayer to Ashur and the Assyrian Ishtar.
I mustered my mighty forces, which Ashur and Ishtar had placed into my hands. Against Egypt and Ethiopia, I directed the march."
Rassam Cylinder records the reign of Ashurbanipal until c. 645 BC.
The latter years of his reign are poorly recorded, probably due to the fact that the Neo-Assyrian Empire was plagued with troubles.
One of Ashurbanipal's last known inscription reads:
"I cannot do away with the strife in my country and the dissensions in my family; disturbing scandals oppress me always.
Illness of mind and flesh bow me down; with cries of woe I bring my days to an end.
On the day of the city god, the day of the festival, I am wretched; death is seizing hold upon me, and bears me down..."
Rassam Cylinder is currently on display in the British Museum.
A truly remarkable, yet biased, insight into the reign of Ashurbanipal and the world in which he lived.

Thoughts on Alex being wrong and loving it
Red White and Royal Blue (2023 movie)
Remember the little quip Henry makes about admiring Alex's willingness to admit when he's wrong? It's such a great moment of foreshadowing, especially since Henry has no idea just how right he is.
Alex prizes himself on being someone who is skilled at reading people, at seeing the person beneath the surface, but he's never come across anyone quite like Henry before.
Alex must be used to people hiding who they truly are - he's been steeped in American politics for years - but he probably isn't expecting anyone from such a legacy of historic power and entitlement to be, at their core, an actual cinnamon roll.
Their initial meeting also comes at a time in Henry's life when any chink in his armour reveals only pain and anger, leading Alex to assume that what lies behind the carefully controlled façade isn't pleasant.
This assumption is only reinforced by further antagonistic interactions, fuelled by Henry's attempts to balance civility while protecting his heart as Alex consistently pulls Henry's metaphorical pigtails.
The fallout from cakegate forces them into extended periods of proximity and we see Alex start to glimpse pieces of the real Henry beneath his bland public persona. Each further piece that's revealed surprises and delights Alex and it's a joy to watch Taylor Zakhar Perez bring those moments to life.
Allow me to ramble about some of these:
1. Alex's pause of panic followed by surprised relief as Henry suavely responds to the interview question, "How did you end up on the floor of Buckingham Palace, covered in cake?" Alex's relief is two fold: he was floundering with no idea what to say (shouldn't have rebuffed Henry's request to prepare for this interview, Alex...) and Henry's answer is not at all what Alex was expecting. Henry could easily have attributed the event to clumsiness or tomfoolery on Alex's part - even just by subtle implication. That wouldn't have been out of line with some of Alex's answers (e.g., "Three words to describe Henry? Um... White, blond and British.") but Henry chooses a more protective route, deflecting attention from Alex, which comes as a pleasant surprise. [Of course he can't show this, so instead retaliates with something as annoying as possible. Cue side eye from Henry.]
2. Alex's big-eyed expression of sympathy as Henry tells him the Palace insisted on parading him around while he was grieving for his father. It's the key moment Alex realises he's built a lot of assumptions on a misunderstanding and has probably treated Henry rather unfairly.
3. Alex frowning at Henry talking and laughing with the little girl in the hospital bed. He's seeing Henry through a new lens and realises this picture doesn’t fit with a lot of his previous assumptions.
4. Alex shaking his head at Henry's joking attempt to decline an invite to his NYE party that most people would kill to get. "That's perfect, you kill me and then I won't have to go." It's the first time Henry uses his sharp wit to share a joke with Alex, rather than directing it at him in a fit of pique. It's an olive branch and I don't think Alex was expecting such easy forgiveness.
5. The sublime series of text based interactions where Alex is surprised and charmed by Henry flirting (under the guise of gentle ridicule).
6. The iconic "I can't believe how wrong I was about you," while he and Henry are as close as two people can get.
7. My all time favourite: Alex's reaction to Henry pointing out the yellow roses on his tie. Henry employs this in a sweet distraction during a moment of all encompassing anxiety for Alex. It's enough to bring Alex out of his fog, to realise how much strength he draws just from Henry being there to support him. The way Taylor says "Oh my god. I'm so grateful you are here," is perfection.
I'm a gooey mess thinking about all the future moments where Alex is surprised and overwhelmed by Henry's kindess.
[Sobs]
On a related note @mulderscully has a great post titled: Alex's headshake of Love™, which captures several of these moments, and more, in perfect gif form.

The Idea of the Sublime in the Enlightenment
During the European Enlightenment, a concept was developed in philosophy and aesthetics called the sublime. In the arts, literature, and the works of intellectuals, the sublime referred to the awe-inspiring capacity of nature and beauty, characteristics that artists and thinkers sought to replicate in their own work and even to apply to ethics.
The concept of the sublime involves the inherent conflict which comes from an appreciation of beauty with a feeling of awe, astonishment, and incomprehension of the eternal. Philosophers discussed this conflict and suggested that our aim should be the harmonious blending of reason with emotion, and so the sublime became an element of the great shift during the Enlightenment which saw reason come to replace religion as the dominant driving intellectual force.
Origins of the Sublime
The idea of the sublime was revitalised during the Enlightenment thanks to the translation of an ancient text by Boileau in 1672. This text, only rediscovered in 1554, was On the Sublime, then thought to have been written by Longinus, a Greek author of the 1st century CE. J. W. Yolton summarises Longinus' thoughts on the sublime as:
…that quality which gives a distinctive power to works of art and literature; it rest primarily on grandeur of ideas and the capacity for strong emotion, supplemented by certain features of rhetoric; sublimity is the echo of a noble mind and a passionate heart.
(508)
Although he is primarily concerned with poetry and oratory, Longinus also writes about the sublime in nature and how impressive natural features and phenomena like wide plains, rugged mountains, and powerful rivers can bring out in all (or most) of us a pleasure at beholding them and a clearer sense of and proximity to the divine.
The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy gives the following definition of the sublime: "The sublime is great, fearful, noble, calculated to arouse sentiments of pride and majesty, as well as awe and sometimes terror" (462-3). The sublime then creates a strange mixture of feelings like pleasure, awe, anxiety, personal insignificance, and even fear and terror; think of one's mixed emotions, for example, when standing above a precipice gazing down on a majestic Norwegian fjord.
The idea of the sublime in nature and the arts would capture the imagination of many writers, artists, and philosophers during the Enlightenment. The sublime, with its focus on immense grandeur and unfathomable meanings, seemed at odds with the progress being made by science where discovering nature's laws and order were the objectives of knowledge. Philosophers attempted to reconcile this conflict between emotion and reason and to show that the mind can indeed triumph over nature. A wide range of Enlightenment thinkers considered the sublime as part of their philosophy but here, in the interests of space and clarity, we will consider only three.

20 Questions with a Fanfic Author
tagged by the @thewildballyntynesgrow - thanks!
Let's do this!
1. How many works on AO3?
33
2. Total AO3 Word Count?
233,556 words
3. Top 5 Fics by Kudos
A German, a Russian, and an American Walk into a Bar (The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015), Illya Kuryakin/Napoleon Solo/Gaby Teller, 97k) - 703 kudos
Two years of missions, from trafficking rings to spy hunters, attempted kidnappings, underground boxing matches, and sanctioned bank robberies. The three of them have found sharing secrets helps.
spoonful of sugar (Ted Lasso (TV), gen) - 314 kudos
Roy flipped through the pages. Stopping at a blank one, he held the pen at the ready. “What do you want me to write down?" Jamie chewed on his lip. Roy was on the verge of repeating himself when he said quietly, “Summer 2009. Broken arm.”
oh god, you're gonna get it (you have not been given love) (Ted Lasso (TV), gen) - 262 kudos
Roy’s got a new job, a therapist, and a niece who isn’t around as much anymore. He’s got decades of anger that’s never seen the lights of day. He’s got a coaching staff trying to move forward without Ted. He's got four footballers looking to him for answers, and one of them—the one that’s become a bit special to him—is hiding a ticking time bomb under goofy outfits and complaints about classic literature. Roy’s got one month to get his shit together before the season starts.
Bottled (Ted Lasso (TV), gen) - 244 kudos
He shakes his head and swears warmly, the way he must’ve done a million times before– “I should fucking strangle you.”
The Dick String Incident (Ted Lasso (TV), gen) - 231 kudos
Jeff was halfway through tying the string around his waist when Colin asked, “Did he say ‘you’ or ‘your?'”
4. What fandoms do you write for?
I've got a ton of unpublished fic lying around, but of the ones that are published, I've done Ted Lasso, The Man From UNCLE, The Musketeers, and One Piece. Also Original Works.
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try. God, I try.
6. Angstiest Ending?
Despite the fact that ensky (One Piece) features Major Character Death, I think that one actually has a very... sublime ending. Like, Sanji may be dead, but Zoro is dedicated to carrying their relationship and rivalry, even if he has to do it alone. It's very Zoro, in his approach to things like grief and responsibility
Kettle. Kettle is, in my opinion, the darkest ending. It's one short, harrowing moment of child abuse, with nothing to soften the blow until the sequel (Bottled, which surprisingly made the top 5 kudos list).
7. Fic with the Happiest Ending?
whipped to a frenzy (Ted Lasso (TV))
Roy receives a text from Jamie that's either very concerning or very stupid.
Spoilers: it was very stupid.
This one simply delights me. I love writing humor, and with this one it hits so softly and fondly.
8. Do you get hate?
Not yet
9. Do you write smut?
Not often. Like fantasy or historical fiction, it's just not a genre that I often feel inspired to write, but when the inspiration does strike, sure. I'll write anything, really, so long the story inspires it (which is why I've written all of those things)
10. Do you write crossovers?
While I've had ideas for crossovers before, they've never come together into a full story for me. Which is a bummer because I currently have that as a square on one of my bingo cards : (
11. Ever had a fic stolen?
Not a clue
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic?
Yes! I've cowritten 2 fics (both on ao3) with a friend, and I'm currently going back and forth with the same friend on another possible fic now that the stars have aligned us on a similar interest
14. All time favorite ship?
Don't really have a favorite-favorite
15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I've got a fic I've not updated since 2016 and I'm still holding out hope
16. Writing strengths?
I think my ability to describe things from a sensory perspective is quite good. Also, in general, I think I tend to have a really solid idea of what big idea or theme I'm writing towards with my fics. This means that when the brainrot subsides, the fic is still safe, because I've got a really good story to help keep me hooked
17. Writing Weaknesses?
I am beginning to suspect that I may have untreated adhd. Other than that, I'd say my dialogue. You know that post going around that's like 'how do you write such good dialogue' / 'I say the words out loud like I'm talking to myself'? The problem is that's still a skill, and it's a skill that I don't always have. Some times I hear the characters perfectly, sometimes I don't. When I don't, it takes a lot of work and focus to try and chisel the ideas of what a character would say into actual dialogue. I'm trying to get better at it, but it's hard.
18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue?
I don't like it when the translations are all at the bottom in the author's note, but I did once read an incredible fic that was about a character purposefully speaking in another language to see how well the person who knew them best would understand them. It was so remarkably well-done, and it's sort of the standard bearer in my head for how to write mixed language that's still enjoyable for the reader. (They also had hover-over translations for people who wanted to know what was being said, but part of the fun was trying to guess based on the context clues from the pov character)
In general, my rules for mixed language dialogue tend to be the same as my rules for using pop culture references:
would a person who doesn't know what it means still be able to enjoy it?
would someone who doesn't know what it means still be able to engage with the story being told in a similar way to the rest of the audience?
To me, it's not enough to simply have translations - you've gotta make sure the rest of the story carries the weight too. If the audience and the character are meant to be confused, great! Nicknames, titles, things like that that can be tricky to translate without losing meaning, those can usually be gleaned with some contextual clues.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I wrote one page of a Dragon Ball Z fanfic when I was 10
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
oh god, you're gonna get it (you have not been given love) is probably my favorite. It's been immensely satisfying to plot out, and it's giving chance to focus on character pairings that don't get a lot of in-depth attention
I do want to give a small shout out to two of my other fics though, because I'm feeling soft about them right now:
juice boxes and snacks
When Jamie was really little, his mummy used to work the swing shift.
This one is just a small introspective piece about Jamie growing up in poverty with a single mum, and how that colors his present even as his current self has come to understand it more
If I have things you need to borrow (I won't borrow what I can't earn)
Roy might have given him the captain’s band, but that’s not enough. He has to earn it. He has to put the effort in, or it doesn’t count. He needs to be worthy of it, or else what’s the fucking point?
This is my Isaac character study, where Isaac struggles to figure out how to be the sort of leader he wants to be. Featuring his friendship with Jamie and Colin over the seasons
Tagging for funsies, no pressure at all:
@abubblingcandle @altschmerzes @tenderhooked @nativestarwrites @cartwrong (if you want to do slow horses too <3)

The myth of Medea (3)
After this previous article about Medea by the Renaissance, I offer you another loose translation – of Michèle Dancourt’s article about « Medea in the European culture of the 20th century ».
Tumblr media
It seems that, within the myth of the infanticide, Medea’s male counterpart is Herakles, who killed his wife and children under the illusion that he was sacrificing animals. Heiner Müller highlighted how Medea became one of the great figures of the 20th century and one of the symbols of the disasters that struck it, alongside Herakles. (Meanwhile the 19th century was more fascinated and devoted to the duo of Antigone and Prometheus). When he staged his work “Cement” in 1972, depicting the monstrous metamorphoses caused by the Russian revolution, Heiner Müller slid in both an “Herakles 2 or the Hydra”, and a “Medea-Commentary”, to better show the “war of the texts” around the character of the child-killer. He said: “Myths are a collective experience that repeats itself. We can make them variate up to infinity, just like dreams.” During the 20th century, Europe modulates the figure of Medea, reinvented from the texts of Euripides and Seneca, in the theater, in the opera and in the cinema. These variations are all the product of male artists, except for a few attempts in different medium: choreography (with Martha Graham and Birgit Cullberg), essay (Isabelle Stengers), novel (Christa Wolf) – almost as if the radicalization of Medea’s monstruosity finally called for women’s voices to speak after centuries of male creation.

1/ Fable variations
The Medeas of the 20th century all edit and nuance the original legend. Jean Vauthier’s partition created for the play of Seneca develops and expands the subject (with the music that Xenakis composed for this show being very insistent on the original Latin inflexions), while the “Medeaspiel” of Heiner Müller is very contracted between the choral of the two sides, “Abandoned shore” and “Landscape with the Argonauts”. Close or far away from the texts of Antiquity, all those contemporary rewrites offer new insights on the character. For example, they shift the focus towards a Medea still deeply rooted in Colchis: Pasolini’s movie opens, with Cappadocian landscapes and Tibetan music, on a mysterious sequence depicting archaic agrarian rites and sacrifices where Medea performs as a priestess. In the sardonic and misogynic play by Gilbert Lely, “Only kill your father for good use”, Medea, depicted as a parricide and as involved in an incestuous relationship with her brother, cannot even leave Colchis: Jason rejects her and escapes while she is having a breakdown.
Other works prefer to move the tragic emotion towards the children of Medea and Jason, who were barely heard in the centuries past. Hans Henny Jahnn’s “Medea” presents two sons with a strong bond, a weapon that Medea will use to “nail down this beautiful couple”. The play highlight the cruelty of the impossible rivalry between Jason and his oldest son, who both are in love with the daughter of king Creon. Medea, indeed, gave to his lover in this version an eternal youth. Similarly, when Lars von Trier shoots in 1988 the scenario that Carl Dreyer wrote in 1965, and where Medea poisons her children with a sweet tisane while singing a lullaby, he invents a new pathetic sequence: the oldest son helps his mother to hang the youngest one on the branch of a tree, in a wasteland, and after waiting for a long time he finally asks his mother to help him make his own noose.
However, the works of the 20th century get the further away from the tradition when it comes to the endings. While Medea stills takes refuge at the Athens of Aegeus (as in Euripides), no work ever present the “epiphany of the crime in a triumphal chariot” (as with Seneca), a scene which had been a rule for the classical theater and opera. The idea of Medea going “upwards” is simply suggested, sublimed: the Medea of Bergamin calls for the Celestial Father, “I will fill your eternal solitude with a human solitude of love!”. Outside of Anouilh’s Medea, who kills herself, the Medeas of the 20th century all disappear without dying because, as Max Rouquette wrote “how can one die when we are but a kind of death, a cursed wind which haunts endlessly the earth”. The Medea of Kyrklund petrifies herself in the shape of the Minoan snake-goddess, with Jason by her side, “like an engraving on a funeral stone”. The one of Jahnn, sitting by the corpses of her children, announces the end with her prophetic voice: the fortress will crumble down to the bottom of the sea.

2/ Paroxysm of violence
It is through modern singing that Medea now tries to capture the “furor” of Antiquity and the “panic” energy which infects the entire city. Christa Wolf’s “Medea-Stimmen” depicts the mechanism of how a scapegoat is created by a chain reaction: Medea is insulted in the streets of Corinth and treated like a scapegoat, she is banished from the town, her children are lapidated by the crowd, and the collectivity ends up inventing the legend of the infanticide after the one of the fratricide. To express the excess of this “spiritual disaster” (as Pasolini said), of this undepictable crime, all the tensions go through the sounds, from Pasolini’s deafening silences to the stenographical screams of Jean Vauthier. The scream is a recurring didascaly in Anouilh’s “Medea” where the protagonist makes an effort to become the Fury that Creon sees in her: “Beasts of this night! […] I shout with you your dark scream. On this night, Medea is all that hunts and all that kills.” Heiner Müller’s Medea echoes in her monologue the screams of many more victims, those of Colchis colonized, of her children that she murdered, of her rival which she mimics the agony of: “Here she is screaming / Do you have ears for this scream / And so screamed Colchis when you were in my womb / She’s still screaming / Do you have ears for this scream”.
All the voices of this echo chamber scream of life and death. Max Rouquette’s Medea screams to an old woman “Shut up! I should not have allowed you to speak. You offer your tongue to the voice of my belly which begs me to save them.” In this this game of hyper-intensity, there is a physical dimension to the passion, which keeps involving in all of these works the blood, the heart, the entrails, the belly, all tied to the notion of devouring. Heiner Müller’s Medea screams “Does this body not / Mean anything to you anymore / Do you want to drink my blood, Jason?”. To her children she says: “I want to rip you out of my heart / You who are the flesh of my heart / My memory / My darlings / The blood in your veins, give it back to me / Enter again my body, for you are entrails”. When she kills her sons, Jahnn’s Medea dares to say: “My thick blood has no shame in laughing, / drunk with vertigo, / because my eyes saw the fruit / of my entrails”. The same characters describes with horrible details how she cut into pieces the body of her brother. She listens to Jason, but only to her him begging her to mutilate him organ after organ, or to listen to how his new wife turned into a carrion.

3/ Medea the barbarian
These explosions of violence are all concentrated within the words “monster”, “savage”, “barbarian”. Sometimes it is Creon that uses them against Medea: “You are a beast! A non-Greek Barbarian! Your work is as black as your skin!” (Jahnn). Other times it is Medea herself that uses the word: “Why are you still clinging on to this barbarian / Who is your mother and your mark of shame” (Müller). “Medea the barbarian” is a notion that comes first, replacing the old idea of Medea the sorceress that Corneille’s play or Charpentier’s opera favorized. Medea becomes the character throughout which the notion of “barbarity” is reversed and decentralized. The artists of the 20th century turn Medea into the “strange foreigner”, robbed of her identity and who can only regain it through an enormous crisis. For Anouilh, Bergamin and Rouquette she is a Gypsy woman, for Jahnn she is a cultureless African, and with Kyrklund’ “Medea Foreigner” she forces the characters to see and hear everything that the European colonization vanquished and repressed: “This vision, Jason / That with the boots of your troops you painted all over my Colchis” (Müller). Kyrklund’s Medea, when she talks about the tree of her native land, the m”bongo”, defends strongly the notion of “sacred” and she fully understands the emptiness of the utilitarian rationalism of which Jason is so proud of. A same conflict is developed by the episode of the “mythical Centaur” in Pasolini’s movie, with Chiron educating a child Jason. Once adult, impoverished by both the colonial adventure of the Argonauts and the male culture of the “logos” at the heart of the city of Corinth, Jason loses any access to the poetry of the hybrid, to the unicity between man, animal and god. When he hears the “rational Centaur” talk and thus verifies the disenchantment of the world, he goes away crying, one hand before his eyes. “Medeaspiel” takes place in a set called “Abandoned shore”, a tormented earth after the last battle of World War II, an atrocious trace left by a male predator that was drunk with the might of his murderous technology. The nature has been torn apart just like the woman was forced to flee, and Medea in her distress knows a “reverse conversion” as she loses her sense of the mystery. The modern works thus invoke back the colonial denunciation present within Euripides and Seneca, but it isn’t just a battle between Europe and Asia anymore.
Tumblr media
4/ The gender war
The knot of violence binds together the bursts of History with the sexual antagonism, because the Greek man betrayed the foreign woman and her children. Numerous texts create a duel where each repeats with a hateful obsession the theme of the “mine and yours”: “I come to give you what belongs to you, and ask you what is mine.” “Who are you fleeing, Jason, you or I? My sons or yours? Your blood or mine?” (Bergamin). “All within me is an instrument all for you. / For you I killed and I gave birth. / Me, your bitch, your whore, me.” (Müller) In this hateful lists that closes the suicidal infanticide, Müller’s Medea can only conclude with this position: “I want to rip humanity in half / And stay in the void between. Me / Neither woman nor man.” The Medeas of Gilbert Lely and Anouilh, the only ones who are vanquished, turn against themselves an irrational hatred of the wounded and amputated feminity. But the feminist cry that can be heard in Euripides’ Medea is still maintained by the works of Dreyer, Lars von Trier, Kyrklund or Bergamin: “I do not want to see the hand of man stop the power of my soul”. “Medea la encantadora” gives a unique light to the dialogue Medea has with her rival Creusa: the word of Medea, “the soul’s weaving”, initiates her to a hidden knowledge, her incantations are tied to the “cante jondo” where a male and female singer oppose each other in a new take on the old chorus. Indeed, in the modern works the chorus is always transformed: for Kyrklund the bourgeoisie of Corinth, for Max Rouquette old women who sing psalms with the voice of magpies, for Müller anonymous and apocalyptic voices… But in very case it amplifies the tragic song of Medea, who keeps modulating her own name (Medea nunc sum), since, by Anouilh’s words, “mothers will never call their daughter by this name anymore”. As with the other Medeas, the one of Max Rouquette plays with the numen of her name:
“You are the image of Medea. You are my mirrors… / More beautiful than any of those that were given to you. Of Medea no image can be ever be bound. / No image of Medea to pay the happiness of another. Be sold who wants to. / But not Medea. Nor Medea’s flesh. / Nor Medea’s love can be separated from Medea.”
