had a moment watching TTS where I was incredulous that everyone was chill with Mrs Sugarby, an old lady who looms out of the shadows extremely creepily with a walking stick and a hood decorated with skulls, then promptly remembered that literally half of Rapunzel’s best friends are Noted Pub Thugs and presumably no one in Corona bats an eyelid at weirdoes acting villainous and covered in skull-shaped accessories anymore.

Have I ever talked about my very not serious theory about Gothel, Zhan Tiri and the other two disciples?
Cause I always wondered by Gothel was the only of the three to not have a cool spirit form and then I realised: it's her vanity.
I'm imagining this big event: disciples swearing their loyalty in exchange for eternal life and the form of a spirit.
Sugracha and Tromus don't think twice, but then it's Gothel's turn.
She looks up at her two friends, think: goodness, those spirits forms are UGLY.
Turns around like: "I'll find another way to eternal life!"
And Tromus, Sugracha and Zhan Tiri are just watching her wander off like... the fuck just happened?
And in her defence, she did find another way.

I have a question that I don't know if you can answer, but I'm asking, anyway!
In Moonlight, have you any plans for any of the disciples to return?
In canon, Sugracha was yeeted into a portal and Matthews promised to return before turning to dust. Neither felt too permanent and seeing how you utilize so many under-utilized characters, I have to wonder.
What about the not-so-loyal disciples who found eternal life?
I definitely plan to play around with the Disciples in Moonrise! Zhan Tiri is an extremely important character in the story and to me it makes no sense for her not to have her Disciples back at some point.
In my AU I made it so that Sugracha wasn't sent into the Lost Realm with ZT because it'd be bad for my storyline, so she was arrested in Painter's Block and escaped when Ruddiger's monstrous form damaged the dungeons, allowing her and many others to run away.
I won't be saying much else besides the fact that both she and Tromus will show up eventually :] !!!

The Eclipse Upon Corona Zhan Tiri Origins (Fanfic) - Summary/Teaser
Hi Everyone! So I’ve recently been working on several season 3 AU fanfics, which will include a deeper focus on the different characters in the show (Rapunzel, Eugene, Cassandra (not being Gothel’s daughter and having a different motive for taking the moonstone) & I plan to do fics focused on Lance and some on Varian, especially addressing Quirin’s note and build up some of their relationship). I also wanted to do a Zhan Tiri backstory with Demanitus and the Disciples because I felt that it would help me so much with my planned writing. What I have now is a brief summary of what I came up with, inspired by a lot of fan theories and some of the lore we were provided in the show.
Tumblr media
I wanted to give a major shoutout to my friend @monicascorner for suggesting this incredible name that I ended up using for my Zhan Tiri Arc, @tangledbea for helping me stay true to the lore and @zhantiri who inspired me to do this project after reading their incredible fanfic AUs as well!
Please note that this whole project is a work in progress but I'm thrilled to share this and continue working on this! :)
Here’s a an AO3 link as well!
Zhan Tiri was a witch of Saporian origin who lived most of her life in Corona. She and Demanitus were best friends who were summoned by the King of Corona to seek knowledge and uncover the mystery of the sundrop flower that was just outside of the Kingdom. During Demanitus and Zhan Tiri’s research and travels, they were able to discover that there is a polar opposite, cosmic element called the moonstone opal. They were also able to discover the power of these cosmic elements as well as the cosmic phenomenon that created these elements, leading Demanitus to make a scroll based on his research. However, Zhan Tiri didn’t share Demantus’s motive of seeking knowledge. She resented Corona royalty for their abuse of power and the overall class inequality that existed in the kingdom, especially since she came from a lower class family. She grew very greedy for the power of the sundrop and the moonstone and was claiming to use them to bring down the royals once and for all. While Demanitus agreed that there was corruption, he did not agree with Zhan Tiri’s methods and saw her grow corrupted by her immense greed. He tried calling her out and warning her, only for her to wreak havoc in the kingdom and harm innocent civilians with her magic. She wanted the ultimate power for selfish reasons and this gave Demanatus no choice but to build a portal to the netherworld and to send her away, despite one last, gut-wrenching warning.
After years of doing research on his own after having to send Zhan Tiri to the netherworld, Demanatus recruited three pupils to help him with his research: Sugracha, Tromus, and Gothel. While the three were rather helpful and seemingly interested, they each had a greed of their own: Gothel wanted eternal youth and beauty, Sugracha wanted the ability to control minds and bodies, and Tromus wanted the ability to manipulate dreams and make whatever he wanted appear. Due to Demanitus’s strict rule about seeking knowledge and seeking what’s best for the greater good, the three pupils decided to betray him and summon Zhan Tiri by performing a ritual, which brought her back as a mighty demon. In return, she gave each of the disciples the powers they wanted, and taught Gothel about the healing incatation to keep her youth and beauty for eternity; all in exchange for them serving her and following her commands.
Zhan Tiri not only cursed Corona with a massive blizzard, but also corrupted the Great Tree when she made it her stronghold. Distraught by his pupil’s betrayal and the mass destruction caused by his former friend-turned-enemy, he had to use magic and engineering to defeat them and save Corona, along with the rest of the world from their danger once and for all. Zhan Tiri and the Disciples, except Gothel, who managed to flee, were all sent back and trapped in the netherworld for generations, until the events of Queen for a Day. Demanitus felt that his quest for knowledge had corrupted so many people and would continue to do so, therefore he tore the scroll and hid the pieces, until the rightful one would put the pieces together.
Meanwhile, Gothel was the only disciple to roam free, unbeknownst to Demanitus. Zhan Tiri was able to use limited magic in the other realm to communicate with Gothel, who was tasked with using the power of the sundrop to bring Zhan Tiri back but ending up betraying that task to continue to use sundrop for generations and generations to come.....

Ricky’s Quest
So after hearing about Ricky’s Quest, I started rewatching some of the season one episodes, mainly the ones that could have serious relation to season two like Queen for a Day and Painter’s Block. While watching those episodes, I think I might have found what he might have been hinting towards.
After rewatching Painter’s Block, I actually picked up on Sugracha the Eternal (or Sugarbee) telling Rapunzel that she would never have to make difficult choices and giving her an easy way out of her problems. This actually stood out to me mostly because it sounds almost identical to how Tromus (or Matthews) tried to trap Rapunzel in Rapunzeltopia.
With Zahn Tiri playing such a huge part in season two and possibly season three, this connection seemed really important to me. It shows that Zahn Tiri will prey on his target’s insecurities to make them believe that the choice he wants them to make is maybe not even just the right choice, but the only choice.
In Queen for a Day, something Cassandra said actually connected this theory in a way. I believe the quote was after Rapunzel said she hoped she was making the right choice, to which Cassandra responded, “You’re not. You’re making the only choice.” I feel like even though it might seem small, that it hints that she might have that mentality further down the line.
So to put a conclusion to this rant, I feel like Painter’s Block and Queen for a Day give a lot of insight to how Zahn Tiri might have been able to manipulate Cassandra when she was separated from the group. Like how Sugracha was able to manipulate Rapunzel into working for Zahn Tiri when she was alone, when Cass was alone with his disciples, they could have similarly preyed on her insecurities and made her believe that maybe taking the moonstone for herself wasn’t the right choice, but the only choice.

@levi120: I’ve been wondering, a lot of the the things we’ve been looking for have been focusing on Cass, but another yet to be solved Mystery that is going to come up in Season 3 is Zhan Tiri. Maybe we should look a little more into Painter’s Block. I’ve only seen background details pointed out from that episode, but from what I gather what we’re supposed to be looking for is “obvious”. No one would look at a little background deco while something else is going on in the scene and slap their foreheads going “OF COURSE I should have seen this coming” from a trivial prop.
Maybe it’s something like the fact that only Sugracha has been freed from re-activating the Demanitus device. Back when I first saw that Episode I could have sworn there might be more minions locked in that room and Season 2 might have put a bigger focus on dealing with that… but we’ve gotten a number from Demanitus himself so I guess that theory is debunked even WITH there being more sigil’s like Sugracha’s in the room.
Or well… journal entries, because the fact you can actually READ what Rapunzel writes there as opposed to the scroll, the scripture from the Tree or Quirin’s letter prompt us to actually read them (these hurt now btw xD)

This is how I see it going:
Gothel, Sugracha the Eternal (Sugarby), and Tomus (Matthews) were the pupils of Demanitus, helping him seek out and study the Sundrop and Moonstone. However, Zhan Tiri convinced the three to double-cross Demanitus and set him free, probably promising to turn them into the powerful spirits Sugracha and Tomus are now. I don’t think Gothel had this power, though, I assume she found the Sundrop flower alone one day and decided to keep it for herself without telling Zhan Tiri or the others. I hope we find out what she was doing the whole time during raising Rapunzel, since it’s clear she didn’t live in the tower with her. Any insight?

Hey Bex! What gimmick do you think Gothel would have had if she had been a spirit? Like Tromus and Sugracha, what do you picture her “Boss Battle” being?
This is such an interesting question, Roy! I read this ask last night and decided to go to bed and think on it because I wanted to give you a really good answer.
So first, I want to go over a few facts that we know. The first is that we don't know what Tromus and Sugracha were like when they were alive. We do know that the "Mrs. Sugarby" guise that Sugracha took on was not her natural one, but "the vessel [she] chose to suit [her] purpose." It's safe to assume that Tromus is the same. Yes, the silhouettes they used in "Lost and Found" were of them, but that was so the audience would recognize them.
Tumblr media
Second, let's break down their known powers that seem special:
Sugracha: Can travel unseen through crowds in her spirit form. Can control multiple people's minds at a time (perhaps only if she's giving them all the same task?), using a trigger sound to "activate" them. It's possible that she has a connection to art (I've RP'd a story with her where she could bring paintings to life for combat purposes) but we have no solid evidence of this. The manipulation/mind control seems to be her biggest "trick," though it's a pretty powerful one.
Tromus: Seems to like to collect magical artifacts (we don't know that he created any of the things in his house, only that he had them). Can put/keep people asleep and invade and control their dreams. Built the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow out of sand?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like Sugarcha, his biggest "trick" seems to be tied into manipulation, something we know Gothel was skilled at as a human.
So I think Gothel's manipulation would continue to be mundane and not magical in nature. I wrote an au RP once where Rapunzel's power didn't come directly from the sun, but was tied to light itself. In that RP, Gothel had power over darkness and shadows. She could manipulate them, travel through them, remove the light from a room by increasing the shadow. In the movie, she used darkness to manipulate Rapunzel a lot, snuffing out her candles, using shadows to create monstrous forms to frighten her, and making sure that she was the only thing Rapunzel could see in a gauntlet of shadowed horrors. She even used the dark of night in the forest by the campsite to make herself more threatening and intimidating, and to seem to vanish. So, I think Gothel's spirit power would be darkness/shadows. It would feed into her drama, as well as her manipulation.
Can you imagine Rapunzel and Eugene and Lance having to fight spirit Gothel in the dark? Rapunzel's C-PTSD triggered not only by her presence, but by all the tricks she was playing that had been used against Rapunzel her whole life? Can you imagine how worried Eugene would be, paranoid that at any moment, there'd be a knife in his side, and trying to keep it together for Rapunzel's sake? Can you imagine Lance just having none of it, and succumbing to a panic attack, because he's skittish at the best of times, but this time he knows there's a threat out there in the dark? It would be horrifying and wonderful to watch.

Disney: So then, while Eugene is fighting the Brotherhood and Rapunzel is fighting Cassandra, everyone else is going to be trapped in the Lost Realm where Zhan Tiri was for all those years!
Me: Oh, cool! So they’re going to fight Sugracha?
Disney: ... Who?
Me: Sugracha the Eternal? She was one of Zhan Tiri’s disciples, and at the end of “Painter’s Block” she got trapped in the Lost Realm with her.
Disney:
Me: Ooh, and Tromus? I assume that’s where the House of Yesterday’s Tomorrow was sucked into at the end of “Rapunzeltopia.” So the gang gets sucked into the Lost Realm, and now they have to fight the Disciples!
Disney:
Disney:
Disney: No.

ok but like the canon tts cass gothel parallel could have been so great like canon tts had so many avenues it could have taken here and it chose. to lift some of gothel’s iconic lines and slap them into cassandra’s mouth with no context. oh and cass looked into a mirror once. it is so superficial and thoughtless and lazy. and if cass weren’t biologically related to gothel absolutely nobody would buy it
but like. ok ok i feel like i’m crazy because no one else talks about this but, gothel was one of zhan tiri’s disciples right. she was sugracha’s and tromus’s contemporary and she worked with them and zhan tiri in pursuit of the sundrop—only to seize the sundrop for herself and use its power for her own ends WHO does that sound like it drives me INSANE that tts never made use of the exceptionally obvious “you are not the only one she abandoned for that flower” line like COME ON
anyway the point being as soon as you engage with gothel as a real person who had this messy, emotionally fraught departure from her own group of friends/colleagues/whatever involving her own pursuit of power everything about the parallel tts wanted to have falls into place but, like, the thing is that parallel has virtually nothing with gothel OR cass being a villain and also rapunzel becomes the zhan tiri in the cass side of this parallel so of course the disney princess show couldn’t do that
this is like barely coherent rambling and i would apologize but i’m not sorry the point is
the contrast here and the key to setting up gothel and cass as foils in this way is their reasons for the betrayal; gothel wanted to be young and pretty and presumably not beholden to zhan tiri for those things and ultimately hoarding the sundrop’s power to herself was about self-aggrandizement. but cass was desperate to escape a toxic situation by any means necessary and seized the power that allowed her to do that
and tts did not want to explore this so the bridge is left incomplete. but there is so much to explore here, in cassandra echoing the patterns of her mother’s abrupt break away from her friends in exchange for a power she used to do Fuck All with for two thousand years. like. like. yall. cassandra has a whole scene in BVA where she’s pacing around failing to harness this magic and worrying that she has no destiny, that taking it was ultimately meaningless, that she will never accomplish anything that will shatter the indifference of the cosmos towards her fate—HOW do you write this and also write gothel’s crowning achievement in 2000 years of immortal life be beauty vlogging into enchanted mirrors for an audience of me myself & i and also NOT CLOSE THE GAP
IT IS
RIGHT
THERE
gothel, zealously guarding the sundrop for two thousand years while whittling away her humanity inch by inch, wasting the eternity she chased so eagerly that she sacrificed everything and everyone else in her life to get it - in front of a fucking mirror, talking to herself about herself and resenting every minor intrusion into her little lovefest for herself — and cassandra, broken down to despair and rage by a country that never gave a damn and a friend who confused obedience for love, grappling with existential terror because even with half of the cosmic power of creation and destruction in her hands she can’t make herself believe she matters. and zhan tiri, zhan tiri who gothel left behind for her stagnant immortality, pushing cassandra to act, to scream defiance into the face of fate and take what the universe refused to give her. maybe it’s a lie but fuck it, that ‘cassandra alone’ ep everyone in the fandom wanted? it should have been about this. this. cassandra barely remembers her mother but she’s terrified, TERRIFIED of being like her - not like her in the sense of being cruel, no, but like her in the sense of being a waste, of squandering herself, her life, her power, of not mattering.
gothel didn’t matter to anyone but herself and she reveled in it and cassandra is so so scared of that and she has the same being her mother rejected telling her over and over again that she’s meant for more than that. literally FUCK zhan tiri convincing cass to pine for even a scrap of a dead woman’s love when it could have been zhan tiri cutting to the heart of it and saying no you are not your mother you could never be your mother you are better than that.
(and wouldn’t that have made the “just like your mother” comment in plus est so, so much heavier? and like actually fucking relevant to cassandra’s arc up to that point sigh)

Tangled the Series Season 3 AU:
Cassandra discovers her true origins behind the door at the House of Yesterday’s Tomorrow’s, which results in her decision to take to moonstone to fulfill her 'destiny' to bring down the class system once and for all.
Eugene has a dream of his late mother, which inspires him to start a movement and reunite the Brotherhood of the Dark Kingdom to take back the moonstone from Cassandra. Joining him in his alliance is his best friend Lance and the genius alchemist Varian.
Rapunzel assumes the role of Queen of Corona and as a result of her best friend's betrayal, she works to rebuild Coronan society. She also takes part in the alliance led by the love of her life, all the while discovering more and more about her destiny as the Sundrop.
Zhan Tiri's true origins are revealed and her plans to enact her revenge against Corona approach quickly as things go according to her plan....
Read my season 3 AU here on AO3! :)
In my AU, Cassandra IS NOT the daughter of Gothel but she discovers that she came from an impoverished family from Old Corona, and her discovery of what happened them led to her betrayal of Rapunzel to fulfill an important quest she believes she's destined for.
(Still in the works):
I also wanted to expand Eugene's role in the plot more and explore the backstory of his mother. Since I thought the brotherhood were really cool characters and Eugene's the heir of the Dark Kingdom throne, it would be awesome for him to work with the brotherhood, Lance, and Varian to take back what was stolen from their kingdom that was truly meant for Rapunzel.
As for Rapunzel, since she is destined to become queen someday, she felt that as acting queen, she needed to rebuild the Coronan justice and class system, as well explore more of her destiny as the sundrop.
I wanted to explore more of Zhan Tiri's backstory with Demanitus and the disciples via her flashbacks and she definitely is going big with her revenge plot against Corona.....
Huge shoutout and thanks to everyone who gave feedback and helped me with this project! I hope whoever reads this fic enjoys! 😊
Feedback and suggestions are always welcome! 🙌🏽
