Vajrayogini
Newari Paubha Thangka
The Vajrayogini Mantra: Benefits, Practice, Empowerment
The Vajrayogini is a tantric deity in Buddhism who represents the path that leads to female Buddhahood. She is regarded as the goddess of grace as well as destruction as she destroys the illusions of the ego.Vajrayogini is a 16-year-old female dakini embodying divine wisdom. She is a feisty manifestation of the divine feminine.
There are several representations of Vajrayogini, but she is mostly depicted as a young and naked tantric deity, blood red (representing her inner fire), wearing ornaments of the human skeleton, a necklace of skulls(representing 16 vowels and 32 consonants that symbolizes purity of speech).
She stands fiercely, holding a flaying knife in her right hand, using it to cut off all attachments. In her left hand, she holds a skull cup filled with mahasukha(eternal bliss); she pours these out to her devotees with compassion. She is surrounded by beaming flames of awareness. She looks up towards the pristine realm of Khechara and drinks from the skullcap on her left hand.
Practices related to Vajrayogini and the Vajrayogini mantra are often kept a secret, as anyone with limited knowledge can easily misinterpret it. The Vajrayogini practice is a sacred practice which requires guidance . If these practices are misinterpreted then the practitioners will have to face the severities including ; health issues, mental disturbance and spiritual regressions as well.
Vajrayogini Short Mantra oṃ va jra yo gi nī hūṃ pha ṭ svā hā oṃ vajrayoginī hūṃ phaṭ svāhā
This Vajrayogini mantra holds immense significance in Tibetan Buddhism. It comes from Anuttara Yoga tantra and should be recited with proper guidance and instructions. Like any other Tibetan Buddhist mantra; this Vajrayogini mantra can be a powerful tool for self-transformation, healing and liberation from samsara. This mantra is especially beneficial for women as they can relate more to the female deities.
Understanding the Vajrayogini Mantra Meaning
om om om sarva buddha dakiniyé benza warnaniye benza bairotsaniyé hung hung hung phat phat phat soha
oṃ va jra yo gi nī hūṃ pha ṭ svā hā
oṃ vajrayoginī hūṃ phaṭ svāhā
According to the Vajrayarahi tantra, after understanding this mantra, if one recites it 36 times every day, they can benefit from this not only in this lifetime but at the bardo state and lifetimes after that as well.
Each syllable and word in this mantra holds meaning and significance. Let's dissect them to get a better understanding.
OM- Om is a sacred syllable regarded as the universal sound. Om is indicative of the nature of the consciousness or the ultimate reality.
Vajrayogini: Vajrayogini is a fierce goddess embodying divine wisdom.
Hum-Hum is a seed syllable that is associated with Vajrayogini. This syllable is indicative of essence and her power. This is used to invoke her presence and blessings.
Phat-Phat is a dynamic syllable used as a shield against negative forces and dispels obstacles along the way.
Svaha: This is a commonly used syllable in Buddhism and Hinduism. This is used to seal the mantra and make an offering towards the deity while expressing one’s dedication and surrender.
All the mantras and practices related to Vajrayogini are often regarded as a secret and should not be chanted without instruction. Vajrayogini mantras are widespread all over the internet today, but you should not risk chanting these without proper guidance from a Guru.

"Kubjikā a secret goddess, having immense metaphysical depth, a large varieties of forms, and varied methods of yoga (especially those linked with the movement of vital breath), appears in the Bhairava and then the Western Kaula Tantra (Paschima-amnaya ) Traditions of the Himalayan regions during 7th century. She is variously addressed in her Tantras as :Kubjinī – the Hunchback Girl; Kubjī, Kujā, Kujī, Khañjinī – the Lame One; Vakrikā or Vakrā – the Crooked One; Ciñcinī – the Goddess residing in the Tamarind tree; Kulālikā – the Potteress; Ambā or the vernacular forms as : Avvā, Anāmā, Laghvikā; and, most common of all as Śrī – the Royal One who has as her scripture, teaching, school and tradition (anvaya, āmnāya); and as the Śrīmata. Kubjinī, a very secret goddess is worshiped in her Tantras along with Bhairava, her consort. As Kundalini, Kubjika is worshipped as the Goddess who is curled up and sleeping, waiting to be awakened. The sect of Nine Natahas is believed to have propagated the cult of Kubjika throughout Nepal and North India.
In the Kaula Tantra (Paschima-amnaya) Tradition, Devi Kubjika is worshiped with Shiva with his five faces Sadyojata; Vamadeva, Tatpurusha; Aghora and Ishana.. The hallowed mother Kubjika has six faces.
She is adorned with serpents: Karotaka as a waist band; Takshaka as a mid-riff ornament; Vasuki as garland; and, the venomous cobra Kulika as an ear ornament.
She holds in her arms as skull, a king-cobra, a crystal-bead rosary, skull-topped rod, a conch, a book, a trident, a mirror, a straight sword, a gem necklace, an ankusha (goad) and a bow. She is of fair complexion like a young jasmine flower.
The mantra of Kubjika is Om Shrim Prim Kubjike Devi Hrim Thah Svaha
As per the Kaula Tantra (Paschima-amnaya), Lord Bhairava initiates the Devi into the Kubjikā-mata-tantra, saying: Oh the Goddess of great fortune! O bestower of great bliss! (Mahābhāge Mahā-ananda-vidhāyini) The teaching that you have requested is truly astonishing and salutary (atyadbhutam anāmayam). That is kept secret by all the Rudras, Tantric heroes, and Bhairavas. Nevertheless, I will teach you that secret Tantra, which has come down through a series of transmissions, established through the line of Siddhas (Siddha mārga kramāyātaṃ Siddha paṅkti vyavasthitaṃ)..
Sādhu sādhu Mahābhāge Mahā-ananda-vidhāyini | pṛcchitaṃ yat tvayā vākyam atyadbhutam anāmayam || gopitaṃ sarva Rudrāṇāṃ vīrāṇāṃ Bhairaveṣu ca | Siddha-kramaṃ nirācāraṃ tathāpi kathayāmi te || Siddha mārga kramāyātaṃ Siddha paṅkti vyavasthitaṃ – Kubjikāmatatantra 1.44-46:
The Kaula Śhaiva Siddantha recognizes the lineage (santati) of four innately enlightened Siddhas (sāṃ-siddhika), the Masters of Four Ages (Yuga-nāthas) in the transmission (krama) of the Kaula-marga.
Abhinavagupta, in his Tantrāloka, recalls with reverence the Guru-linage (Guru-santati) , commencing with the four Siddhas, the Yuga-nāthas, together with their consorts: Khagendra and Vijjāmbā; Kūrma and Maṅgalā; Meṣa and Kāmamaṅgalā; and finally, Macchanda (Matsyendranātha) and Kuṅkuṇāmbā (Koṅkaṇā).
khagendraḥ sahavijjāmba illāri ambayā saha || vaktaṣṭir vimalo ‘nantamekhalāmbāyutaḥ purā | śaktyā maṅgalayā kūrma illāri ambayā saha || jaitro yāmye hy avijitas tathā sānandamekhalaḥ | kāmamaṅgalayā meṣaḥ kullāri ambayā saha || vindhyo ‘jito ‘py ajarayā saha mekhalayā pare | macchandaḥ kuṃkuṇāmbā ca ṣaḍyugmaṃ sādhikārakam. – Tantrāloka 29.29cd-31:
Matsyendranātha or Macchandanātha, the most iconic Siddha, is said to be primarily responsible for the spread of the Kaula-marga of the Shaiva Siddantha in this Kali Age.
Apart from Matsyendranātha, some other Siddhas were also said to have played an important role in propagation of the Kula-mārga.
The Tantric text, Devīpañcaśatikā, mentions the set of four other Siddha-couples: Niṣkriyānanda and Jñānadīpti; Vidyānanda and Raktā; Śaktyānanda and Mahānandā; and , Śivānanda and Samayā
niṣkriyānandanāthaś ca jñānadīptyā sahaikataḥ ||vidyānandaś ca raktā ca dvitīyaḥ kathitas tava | śaktyānando mahānandaḥ tṛtīyaḥ siddhapūjitaḥ || śivānando mahānandaḥ samāyātaś caturthakaḥ | khagendrādyādisiddhānāṃ kathitā gurusantatiḥ – Devīpañcaśatikā 3.15cd-17."

"This and That." From the Suka Rahasya Upanishad, “The Exploration of the Mysteries of Happiness.”
From the first section of the Upanishad we learned OM BRAHMA VASAT SVAHA HUM PHAT means:
“The Supreme Soul, who dwells in all articles of blessedness resides also within me and my big fat missile, this I do declare.”
Tumblr media
Once the Declaration is made, as with any aspect associated with spiritual practices, one must open the heart through meditation if the inherent meaning within its seeds are to sprout.
The heart, the compass of how others feel is the seed of all religion. Greed turns the heart off, its removal opens the observer to the ways others behave when they are happy.
Failure to recognize how unhappy others are so you can do whatever is called sociopathy. The entire purpose of the Script and church attendance and  so many yoga, meditation, and Bible Study websites is to curb the unnatural, inhumane tendencies that lead to uncivilized, sociopathic societies. We have seen what these look like; we are living in history’s worst at this very moment.
Even still, like you, I don’t want to have all that bad a day, let us resort to the advice in the Upanishad and see if there isn’t a really good way instead to pass the time today:
21-22. Meditation: I bow to the noble teacher, beyond becoming and the three Gunas, one, eternal, holy, witness of all knowledge, giver of bliss, beyond the world, sky-like, purpose of major texts.
The four major passages: (1) Consciousness is Brahman (2) I am Brahman (3) That Thou Art and (4) This self is Brahman. Those who recite the statement of identity become liberated in Sayujya (identity).
The Upanishad says “God is the Holy Witness of knowledge.” What does that mean for us, that we can witness the Witness? That means we must know what He knows. From whence comes the rather frequent permission we give ourselves to pretend we are clueless?
First and foremost we must not teach or learn about God in a way that assuages people into thinking they can be ignorant. To foster or remain in a state of continued ignorance is sin and God will not forgive it. You may not pretend guns are okay, you may not say climate change isn’t happening when it is, you may not run down the streets in the quantities of millions bitching and moaning over how other people schcrew.
The cure for the bitchers and their beholders is the same, full understanding of these Four Great Statements:
Consciousness if a gift of God. We don’t know how it happens. Man cannot artificially induce consciousness.  To be aware is the most mysterious and mountainous experience in the universe. To modify consciousness with unnecessary suffering it is greatest and most horrific crime. Guns, invasions, Republicans, Family Research Councils, Pro-Life, Fox News, all the things that are getting us down, these are examples of unnecessary sufferings that we could and should learn to do without and observe the creation just as it is without the voices of oppression ringing from end to end.
The Supreme Soul, the source of unlimited consciousness, is modified through limited consciousness, AKA the soul. We obviously can’t see and think through everything that happens in creation, but we can extrapolate. The ability to extrapolate the infinite especially by reading scripture is the source of all intelligence and human accomplishment.
This and That we are. Intelligent conception of reality unbinds us from sin. Mistakes are not sins. Behaviors that deconstruct the reality God gave us and intends for us to capitalize upon are sins. Gracious acts, which come to pass through proper cognition of reality, these end all patterns, causes, and erase all the traces of sin.
The Self is also the self. Once habitual tolerance for sins and their outcomes, their biases, the insane motivations we have them evaporate what is revealed are the qualities God and human beings share.
Without a glimpse of the untarnished Self through meditation, which antagonizes biases, the photograph of the  world does not develop properly. We will continue to act as if the utterly flawed and false tenets that are driving us all to the brink are right and proper when they are indeed deadly to us.
How to come back to life? The Upanishad says:
23-24. Of the great incantation ‘Tat’, “That”  the seer is Hamsa “the King of Grace” , un-manifest Gayatri is the metre.
=the King of Grace, fully illuminated by the Supreme Consciousness is more than just a well-wisher…
Paramahamsa the deity “The Most High, the Most Wise, the Forgiving, the Especially Forgiving” is God;
Hamsa the seed “who sows the creation with Grace” ;
Sama-Veda, power “knowledge of the Self, Supremely Still”;
So’ham is the pin; “Of His Kindness, I am.”
Application is the meditation for my liberation. Bow to the thumbs, to that aspirant Svaha “the autograph”,
 To Isana “the master”,
The index fingers, Vasat “the Habitat”,
To Aghora  “follower of Siva” the middle fingers,
To Sadyojata, “the newly born follower of Siva” the ring fingers, hum;
To Vamadeva, “the poet, the chariot of the gods”, the little fingers Vausat “the formula”  to that spirit, Isana, Aghora etc. Phat.
“The magic formula for life is found in the chariot of the gods, the words of the Script. From within the masters stamp the soul of the new and the established student alike with the Knowledge of the Supreme, who is indwelling, the Most Kind, the One Who Expresses Himself and sows creation with His Graces through embodied demonstrations of the Self.
Meditate on that shining light as knowledge and its objects and what is beyond them both, taintless, awake, free and imperishable."

Some such Mantras are given below for the spiritual benefit of the readers -
Special Ganesha Mantras
Aum Shri Ganeshaya Namah
"Praise to Lord Ganesha". This is the mantra of prayer, love and adoration. It is chanted to get Ganesha's blessings for the positive starting of a project, work or simply to offer him the praise.
Aum Gan Ganapatye Namah
This is Lord Ganesha's mula ("root") mantra .It is also known as his ''beej'' Mantra. This mantra is used for Yoga Sadhana in which we pray to Lord Ganesha and merge ourself with the supreme knowledge and peace. This is a mantra from Ganapati Upanishad. One can always use it before starting any new venture so that success comes without any hassle.
Aum Vakratundaya Hum
This is a powerful mantra from Ganesha Purana. When things are not in your favour, or when the minds of the people turn negative, depressed or discouraged, the attention of Ganesha may be drawn by this mantra to straighten their ways. The HUM symbolizes "Delay no more, my Lord, in straightening the paths of the crooked-minded ones." This mantra is used many a times in the Ganesha Purana to reduce the violence of cruel demons. In addition, this mantra could also be used for healing any spinal problem, such as curvature of the spine or curved limbs. Dedicate 1,008 repetitions of this holy word to straighten and heal such deficiencies.
Aum Kshipra Prasadaya Namah
Kshipra means immediate. If some danger or negative energy is coming your way and you don't know how to get rid of that danger, with true devotion, practice this mantra for quick blessing and purification of one's aura.
Aum Shrim Hrim Klim Glaum Gam Ganapataye vara varada sarva janamme vashamanaya svaha
There are several beej (seed) mantras in this mantra. Among other things, it says, "Shower Your blessings, O Lord. I offer my ego as an oblation."
Aum Sumukhaya Namah
This mantra has a lot of meaning, in simple terms, it means you will be always very beautiful in soul, in spirit, in face, everything. By meditating on this mantra, very pleasing manners and a beauty comes on you. Along with that comes peace, which constantly works in your eyes; and the words you speak are all filled with that power of love.
Aum Ekadantaya Namah
Ekadanta refers to one tusk in the elephant face, which means God broke the duality and made you to have a complete one-pointed mind. Whoever has that oneness of mind and single-minded devotion will achieve everything.
Aum Kapilaya Namah
Kapila (red) means that you are able to give colour therapy. You are able to create colours around yourself and around others, soak them in that colour and heal them. As per the mantra you create, so will you create the colors. Another meaning is "wish cow," the "cow of plenty." It means that whatever you wish, that comes true. There is a wish-cow inside you. Whatever you wish, especially for curing others, comes true instantly.
Aum Gajakarnikaya Namah
The ears of Ganesha, the elephant - god, are constant fanning, which means people can talk a lot, but you are not receiving inside anything other than what is important. It also means that you can sit anywhere and tune this celestial tube (the body) with seven channels (chakras) and all 72,000 nadis, to any loka and be able to hear ancestors, angels, the voice of God or the voice of prophets. That kind of inner ear you will develop through this mantra.
Aum Lambodaraya Namah
This means you feel that you are this universe. It means that all the celestial bodies are within you. Like an entire tree is in the seed, the whole universe is in the sound of creation, which is Aum, and that Aum consciousness in you makes you feel that you are the universe. Therefore, if you say, realizing the oneness with the universe, "shanti to the world" every day, then the grace of God will come and there will be world peace, universal peace. It is the universe within Aum and Aum within you.
Aum Vikataya Namah
This means realizing this world as a dream or a drama. When you are in that high consciousness, this whole world looks like a dream. All of us have taken a role. We have to play our role in life as wife or husband or children or citizens, all consistent with the role we have taken. When an actor bitten by a sponge cobra that is brought on the stage falls, the entire audience cries; but that boy who has fallen knows it was not a real cobra and he is not dead. Life is a drama --definitely life in this material world, this physical world of ego, is a drama. But inside, like the boy on the stage who is quite happy knowing that he didn't die by the bite of the sponge cobra, like that, the truth never dies in us; it is immortal. So everything else you consider as drama. That consciousness comes to you by knowing this mantra.
Aum Vighna Nashanaya Namah
This mantra invokes the Lord Ganesha to remove every hindrance in your life and in your works. By constant meditation on this mantra, all obstacles and blocked energy in your physical and cosmological bodies are released.
Aum Vinayakaya Namah
Vinayaka is the name of Ganesha in the golden age. So by realizing this mantra, your life will have a golden age. In your office, in your work, you'll be the boss. Vinayaka means something under control. Vinayaka means the Lord of resolving problems.
Aum Ganadhyakshaya Namah
This mantra is very important. Suppose you have a group, a country, neighbours, or any kind of group therapy, group healing or a whole country requiring healing, then you have to bring that entire group to your mind's arena and say this mantra. A group healing takes place by this mantra.
Aum Bhalachandraya Namah
In Sanskrit, bhala means the forehead center. Chandra means the crescent moon. Bhalachandra means that chakra from where the nectar drips. That is the secret of all healing. It is to feel yourself as Shiva, identifying yourself with the Truth and feeling constantly that you are carrying the crescent moon, the symbol of growth and nectar of peace.

Yagna - Superstition or Science?
Three years back, I had been to Varanasi to meet a business partner. After the day's work, I was back at Varanasi airport, and stepped into its small, compact smoking zone. As I lit my cigarette, a middle aged lady walked in, took out a cigarette from her handbag, lit it and smiled at me. She was a foreigner. We struck a conversation. She told me that she was a German and had come here to invite one of the pandits in Varanasi to visit her home town in Germany, to organise a Yagna for them. I looked at her incredulously. She told me calmly that there is a big market for Yagnas in Europe. I could not believe my ears. As she ground her half-finished cigarette and turned to leave, she smiled and said politely, "Indians have forgotten the science behind Yagnas." And she left.
She was wrong. I hadn't forgotten. I just didn't know that there was a science behind Yagnas.
Tumblr media
The above illustration is one of the thousand or so that Devdutt Pattanaik has sketched in his fifty plus publications demystifying Hinduism, its mythology and its complex imagery. Over the past three years, I have heavily banked on him to understand this multi-faceted way of life, originally called Sanatana Dharma, now conveniently but inaccurately called Hinduism. What I share with you below is based on my understanding, however incomplete it may be.
The most commonly used translation of Yagna is Sacrifice. Devdutt Pattanaik says that Yagna was infact conceptualized, not as a mere sacrifice, but as an Exchange. As such, it consisted of two parts - A Sacrifice or an Offering, made in return for an Expectation.
The initiator of the Yagna was called a Yajamana. He initiated a Yagna because he had a material desire that he wanted to fulfill - a son to continue his lineage, or wealth for his treasury, or rains for his kingdom, or victory in a war, and so on and so forth.
In order to fulfill his desire, he was willing to make an offering (donations of cows, wealth etc), represented by Svaha - This of me, I offer to you.
The fulfiller of his desires was a Devata - an energy form, representing the material apiration of the Yajamana. More on this guy later. The Devata fulfilled the desire saying Tathastu - So be it!
So, a Yagna was a mechanism of invoking a Devata to fulfill a particular desire. It was a "give and recieve" mechanism, a practical, material process, as against the misunderstood "noble" concept of simply a sacrifice.
This process of invoking the Devata was highly technical, and required an expert who knew its technolgy. This expert was called a Rishi, who was a Brahmana (one who is in communion with the Brahman).
Ancient Indian Rishis were scientists, who knew the science and technology behind invoking different energy bodies (Devatas) representing different material desires.
Tumblr media
Okay. But did Devatas exist? Are they these so-called energy bodies, or are they just figments of mythology? How do we get a grip on this idea?
To understand this, lets see what modern science has to say. I take modern science's reference, not because it is more advanced or more accurate, but simply because it is contemporary and so, we relate to it better. Lets see what its foremost scientist, Albert Einstein, had to say.
The crux of Einstein's entire life is a small formula, probably the most well-known formula in the world, E=mc2. Through it, Einstein states that:
Tumblr media
Matter is nothing but condensed energy.
Different types of matter resonate with different energy levels.
Now, compare this with what the Sankhya Yoga, one of the six schools of Indian philosophy, expounded by Kapila Maharshi, says.
Consciousness (Purusha or Shiva) manifests as Energy (Prakriti or Shakti).
Energy manifests as various forms of matter - from the very subtle (Shoonya), to the subtle (Sukshma), to the gross forms of matter (Sthula).
So, Energy is condensed Consciousness. Matter is condensed Energy.
Tumblr media
Through a set of processes, it into possible to change matter into energy, or energy into matter, or tap into higher or lower energy levels, and change the forms of matter.
So, it is possible to invoke an energy form that will bring rain to a land. Required frequencies have to be tapped. It is possible to invoke a male child in a barren womb. Those particular frequencies have to be tapped. This Yagna was called Putrakameshthi Yagna. It is possible to invoke wealth. A different frequency, and hence a corresponding energy form needs to be tapped. This energy form can be given a name (for example, Kubera) and can be considered a deity (worthy of worship), but in essence, I understand a Devata as an energy form, corresponding to the frequency of a material, physical aspect.
So, there can be a water god (Varuna), or a fire god (Agni) or a wind god (Vayu), or a tree god, or an elephant god (Ganesha) or a goddess for wealth (Lakshmi), or for knowledge (Saraswati), or for any of the 33 million gods and goddesses in the Hindu pantheon. They may just have been various energy forms corresponding to various frequencies on the material plane.
Next, how can one invoke these deities (Devatas or Devis)?
The set up of the Yagnashala itself is applied science, ie. highly advanced technology. Take for instance the Havan Kund, also called Yagna Vedi.
Tumblr media
The Havan Kund works on a simple scientific principle that geometry (shape, direction, size, location) influences the flow of energy. This is the same principle on which Vaastu Shastra is based. So the shape of the Yagna Vedi varies with the type of energy to be invoked.
Tumblr media
A funfact - the word pyramid means fire in the middle. It was an ancient geometrical tool to create a particular energy field within itself.
The second aspect of invoking the Devata is the use of Mantras. There is a beautiful book on this subject by Om Swami.
Tumblr media
Basically, mantras are sounds. Sound is infact energy. If a particular sound is uttered, a vibration is created. This vibration has a particular frequency. So different syllables generate different frequencies.
A mantra is a combination of different syllables in a particular order, which when uttered aloud, repeatedly, creates a particular energy field. There are mantras for various material and spiritual aspirations - for health, for wealth, for relations, for mental peace, for spiritual growth, so on and so forth.
Another funfact - the most powerful mantra in the universe is a simple syllable - Om, also pronounced as AUM, a corruption of which is seen in every religion - Amen in Christianity, Amin in Islam etc.
Another aspect of the science of Yagna is the use of Fire - Agni.
Tumblr media
Fire is one of the five primordial elements - Agni (fire), Vayu (air), Apah (water), Akash (space) and Prithvi (earth).
The discovery of Fire by man is a pivotal moment in his evolutionary journey, primarily because it marks man's evolution of consciousness. Reminds me of the movie - Jungle book, by Disney - where Mowgli is captured by a bunch a monkeys because the monkey king wants to know how man made fire.
Tumblr media
More importantly, fire is energy - heat energy. It also signifies purity. It burns away impurities and leaves a pure residue.
I read somewhere that there are 1008 types of Yagnas in the Vedas.
I wonder why the only narrative of Yagna I heard as a kid growing up was that it involved animal sacrifice. I wonder why I have always considered Yagna to be a superstition. And I wonder how Germans heard another narrative and decided to import its technology from India.

Summer Solstice 2021
Summer Solstice Is a Transformative Vedic Experience
International Yoga Day
Om bhaskaraya vidmahe divakaraya dhimahi
Tanno suryah pracodayat- Surya Gayatri
In Vedic thought the Sun or Surya is the Atman, the Self of all, which is also the Purusha, the pure consciousness that is the goal of Yoga. The connection of Yoga with the Sun at an esoteric level is well established in the Yoga tradition. Besides the outer Sun in the sky, there is the inner Sun of Self-awareness that dwells in the hearts of all beings, our immortal essence of light.
The significance of Summer Solstice is honoring  ‘International Yoga Day’, designated so by the United Nations in 2015 and is ever since observed on the day of Summer Solstice. A day to draw our inner perspective to synchronizing, body, mind, emotions and atman. When we are in a state of equilibrium we connect to the cosmic time cycles of wellbeing.
निर्जला एकादशी
June 21st is the auspicious Nirjala Ekadashi, the most sacred and significant Ekadashis out of all twenty four Ekadashis in a year. Also  known as Bhimseni Ekadashi, Pandava Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi.
As per the Hindu calendar, Nirjala Ekadashi is celebrated in the month of Jyeshtha during the Shukla Paksha on the 11th day (Ekadashi tithi). According to the Gregorian calendar, the day falls in the month of June.
Nirjala means without water and Nirjala Ekadashi fasting is observed without water and any type of food. Nirjala Ekadashi Vratam is the toughest among all Ekadashi fasting due to strict fasting rules. Devotees abstain not only from food but also from water while observing Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat.
In East Asian countries, the day is celebrated to mark Dragon Boat Festival, whereas it is observed as National Aboriginal Day in Canada to acknowledge the contributions of the country’s native populations.
It is the ‘International Music Day’, where we work with our inner Svara Shakti. Music is powerful as it draws us to meditate within the Hridaya or spiritual heart. A beautiful moment to dive deep into a mantra practices ad draw in the divine grace of Sarasvati.
This year we are also in reverence of Father’s Day where we remember the Father figureheads of nurturing in our lives. Balancing both the feminine and masculine energies within us , the earth, the animal world draws us to connect with the Universal flow of divine grace
The summer solstice is always an important astrological and astronomical event.
It marks the highest point of the Sun in the northern sky, the apex of the auspicious northern course of the Sun in Vedic thought.
Ancient spiritual traditions throughout the world have long marked the solstice as an important sacred day of celebrations, perhaps even the most sacred day of the year. From Native Americans, to pagans like Celts, Greeks and Romans, to the Hindus, the solstice is honored with rituals and meditation. The Sun is the visible face of the deity and Divine light.
In the Rig-Veda the ancient Hindu scriptures ‘Ayur’ is explained as Agni or fire which encompasses our soul stirrings or essence of life. The soul or reincarnating being is veiled in the body, mind and consciousness in the form of fire and Light. On the summer solstice, that energy of light is most evident.
While Stonehenge rituals are most famous on this date, it should be remembered that India has the most numerous, oldest and yet most alive Sun temples in the world, some with histories going back thousands of the years. India remains the land in which the Sun has been most prominently worshipped since the most ancient period.
Worshipping the Sun
At the dawn of this solstice may we welcome the transition through deeper sadhana with prayer, tapasya, puja and solitude, offering water and honey to the rising Sun with Surya mantras and invocations.
Working with the Pranic mantra of Shiva is very auspicious and harmonizing.
Revering Maa Durga as Devi holds the solar and lunar powers and helps ground the sadhaka in the muladhara chakra .
One can connect the Soma or bliss energy of the Sun with mantras on the Summer Solstice and an offering of water with honey. The powerful Paramjyoti mantra invokes the Supreme Light!
Aum Hrim Hamsah Soham Svaha
Yet the solstice has its own value as a sacred day and should be treated as such, regardless of the planets. This should begin with greeting the rising Sun, the Sun at noon and the Sun at sunset, with mantras like the Gayatri mantra of the Vedas, or bija mantras to the Sun like Om Shreem Suryaya Namah!
These mantras can be done along with offering water and honey to the Sun, particularly water stored over night in a special copper vessel, or while standing in bodies of water. One should honor not only the outer Sun but also the inner Sun, which can turn this day into a day of solar enlightenment.
Mantras to Saturn and Ketu can also be performed, particularly at night, as well as those for Jupiter, particularly when we are gazing at these planets in the night sky.
Om sham shanaishcharaya namah
Om hum kem ketave namah
Om strim brahm brihaspataye namah
We must strive for the highest light, even when surrounded by our shadow world  and secret darkness.
Humanity needs a new yogic awakening and we can all benefit by energizing our sadhana with the light of Shakti reflecting the Universal Self.
Surya Namaskar
Eka Chakro Ratho Yasya, Divya Kanaka Bhooshithaha
Sa may Bhavathu Su Preetha ha, Padma Hasto Divakaraha
Navagraha Stotra
Japakusumasamkasham kashyapeyam mahadutim
Tamorim sarvapapaghnam pranato’smi divakaram
Navagraha Nama Bija Mantra
Om hrim sum suryaya namah
Navagraha Tantric Bija Mantra
Om hram hrim hraum sah suryaya namah

Q & A Meme
I got tagged by @wrathofthestag who knows I love stuff like this. :D
Rules are: answer these questions and then tag people.
1. Name: Liz, sometimes Lizzie, occasionally Izzy. You can call me a Silver Fox if you want to. =DDD
2. Zodiac Sign: Scorpio on the cusp of Sagittarius, with (apparently) Aquarius rising.
3. Height: 5’ 4″, according to my drivers license.
4. Hogwarts house:  when i was 11 i would have said Hufflepuff. Nowadays I generally think Ravenclaw, because now i actually understand I am both smart and clever. There’s a vote in for Griffindor as well, because I’ve been impulsive my whole life but have taught myself to be brave.
5. Last thing I googled: “define corybantic” I was reading this insanely good Sherlock/John fic by MirithGriffin (Control, Alt, Delete) and she actually used language i had to look up? vocabulary I didn’t know?? it was the BEST. and such a deep rich emotionally congruent story...
6. Song stuck in my head: Sound of Silence, cover by Disturbed. Yummmmm
Tumblr media
7. Number of followers: 657. I do block the bots, so I’m proud of that number
8: Amount of sleep: 8-9 works best but i keep forgetting to go to bed. fortunately it’s only 2-3 times a week i have to be functional for anything before 10.
9. Lucky number: 13, 7, and 3. Also any age I am at which is a prime or a square.
10. Dream job: One that I’ve held is as a junior high librarian. Books and booktalking, teaching (informally, in small doses, without having to do grading), bookshopping, book repair, supporting and helping young teens to figure things out.
11. Wearing: Today was a workout day. I actually think i look cute for a change: silver sketchy flower on a dark heather grey dolman tshirt, my new black yoga pants from Duluth Trading company (recessed zippered pockets!) mismatched smartwool socks from REI, and my workout/walking sneakers. Piled my hair up in a bun on top of my head... see? cute!
12. Favourite Song: This is my impossible question.  I will never be able to answer this. It cycles, sometimes every week, sometimes every day. Different songs are evocative for different moods, soothe or stimulate. I love music that moves me to dance, but my favorite thing to do is to dance to live piano playing. We did that for eurythmy class in the waldorf teacher training, and there’s nothing like it: the rush, the calm, you’re living out to your fingertips and the ends of your hair.
Tumblr media
13. Favourite Instrument: I played violin for awhile as a kid, and even though I haven’t been able to pick it up again so it stuck lifelong, it informed my aesthetic appreciation of music. Remember Come On Eileen? a fiddle player working with a pop band is always going to get my attention, and a good violin-piano piece can break my heart or send me soaring.
14. Aesthetic: wait, i wrote this down in my planner when i first got the tag-youre-it: AH. Witchy Hobbit Cleric!
15. Favourite Author: Again, too many to nail down to one.  Ngozi Ukazu, Robin Mckinley, LM Montgomery (The Blue Castle), Mccaffrey, Heinlein, Charles DeLint! (Moonheart, Svaha) Lois Mcmaster Bujold (Vorkosigans), Seanan McGuire, R. Cooper (@sweetfirebird), Patricia Kennealy (Celts in Spaaaaaace), Patricia Briggs, Neil Gaiman. Urban fantasy, supernatural adventures, a little humor and romance yes please! Kedreeva, Xiaq, PorcupineGirl, Tiptoe39 ... Cakeisnotpie, shit. I wish i could organize all my bookmarks by author and give better credit where credit is due!
16. Favourite animal sound: the little huff that the cat makes when she settles down on me to nap... she’s 16, I indulge the fuck out of her.
Tumblr media
17. Random: I met Kenny Loggins once in college when I was working a clerical gig for the music department. One of our profs was working on electronic sound design (this was like 1989, it was a new field of study and development) and the prof was like, “he wanted to use my sounds! no way am i gonna give up my sounds!” =) also, like david tennant, I can pronounce llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch if i get a little warmup. (lived in Aberystwyth for a year)
Tagging... let’s tag some new followers! @lucyintheskywithpasta97, @insecure-whisper, @aethelflaedladyofmercia (hi by the way!) @shortorange76, @shyocean, and @fckthishitrn (very fun handle, btw)

This is a beautiful layered mantra calling on White Tara for her Divine Love, compassion, wisdom and protection. The White Tara (Sanskrit: Sitatara; Tibetan: Sgrol-dkar) She symbolizes purity and is often represented standing at the right hand of her consort, Avalokiteshvara, or seated with legs crossed, holding a full-blown lotus. She is generally shown with a third eye.
Tara, Tibetan Sgrol-MA, Buddhist saviour-goddess with numerous forms, widely popular in Nepal, Tibet, and Mongolia. She is the feminine counterpart of the Bodhisattva (“Buddha-to-be”) Avalokiteshvara. According to popular belief, she came into existence from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, which fell to the ground and formed a lake.
Out of its waters rose up a lotus, which, on opening, revealed the goddess. Like Avalokiteshvara, she is a compassionate, succoring deity who helps men “cross to the other shore.” She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as of spiritual travel along the path to enlightenment.
White Tara is the female Bodhisattva of compassionate activity, the supreme mother and collective manifestation of the enlightened activity of all the Buddhas. She is said to see all suffering and respond to requests for help. Her yogic method promotes health and extending one's lifespan.
White Tara is a Bodhisattva (one who has pledged to put the suffering of others before her own release from suffering) who encompasses the characteristics of all Buddha’s past, present, and future.White Tara is known by Tibetan Buddhists as The Swift Protectress because Tara acts quickly to protect the mind from the delusions and snares of Samsara. She is also known as Samaya Tara, translating as ”Vow Tara.”
This refers to Tara’s vow to save all sentient beings. Occasionally, White Tara is called “the Mother of all Buddhas”, because She represents the perfect embodiment of graceful power, purity, and wisdom. The main characteristic of Arya Tara is that she is....

The Gayatri Mantra is from one of the oldest existing texts in an Indo-European language, the Rig Veda, which was composed somewhere between 1700 BCE and 1100 BCE. It is a highly revered mantra associated with the rites of passage ceremonies for Hindus. In the twentieth century the same yogis who were bringing yoga to the west, began to teach the Gayatri mantra more broadly.
Gayatri is a vedic metre in which the verse is composed.
The first line of what we chant as the Gayatri mantra, Om bhur buvah svaha, is not in the Rig Veda mantra but is a later addition.
The Rig Veda is essentially a collection of hymns to Vedic deities and the deity of the Gayatri is Savitr. Savitr is sometimes regarded as Surya, the Sun, and sometimes as separate, but nevertheless shares many of the qualities: brilliance, life-giving, beneficence and protection.
As the Gayatri became popular in modern times we find some broader interpretations. So let's have a look at it. First, all the words together and then a word by word translation.
Om Bhur Bhuvah Svaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Diimahi
Diyoyonah Prachodayatt.
Om, or Aum, is regarded as the primal sound of the Universe and points to the Oneness of all.
Bhur – embodiment of vital spiritual energy, earth
Bhuvah – destroyer of suffering
Suvaha (svaha) – embodiment of happiness
Tat – that, in this way
Savitur – Savitri, spiritual sun, the One Light, all pervading Consciousness
Varenyam – worthy of worship, venerable, adorable, worthy of being sought
Bhargo – radiance. Effulgence, splendour, light which bestows understanding, destroyer of sins
Devasya – Divine, of the Deity
Dimahi – we meditate upon; or, may we meditate on, reflect on, be devoted to; or, may imbibe
Dhiyo – prayer, intellect, noble thoughts, intuition, understanding of Reality (buddhis)
Yo – who; he who; the one who
Nah – our; of us
Prachodayaat – may he energize, direct, inspire, guide, unfold; or, he who energizes, directs, inspires, guides unfolds
Putting all of this together, there are still many translations and interpretations.
Here is a literal translation by Christopher Wallis:
Om. Earth. Atmosphere. Heaven.
May we focus our Awareness
on the alluring radiance of the rising (or setting) sun
the Vivifier; may it inspire our thoughts and meditations.
One of our favourites is given by Donna Farhi:
Everything on earth, in between and above
Is arising from one effulgent source.
If my thoughts, words and deeds reflected this complete understanding of unity,
I would be the peace I am seeking in this moment.
Or the playful interpretation of Richard Miller:
Everything is light, this is light , that is light, we are all light, light light light....
So what does it sound like?
There is a particular way of chanting the Vedas called vedic chanting and in that system there is a specified way to chant the mantra. You can learn more about vedic chanting in the Wikepedia article here.
But since some of the mantras "got out of the box" so to speak there have been many versions of it, some more traditional, some more tuneful. Here is one:
he meaning of the Gayatri mantra is as follows: “We contemplate the glory of the light that illuminates the three worlds: dense, subtle and causal. I am that life-giving power, love, radiant enlightenment, and the divine grace of universal intelligence.
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः । तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्यः धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ।। Gayatri Mantra Words in English oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvaḥ tat savitur vareṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt Gayatri Mantra Meaning in Hindi & English Word by Word meaning of Gayatri Mahamantra: ॐ (oṃ) = OM is a sacred sound and a spiritual symbol in Indian religions भूर (bhūr) = प्राण प्रदाण करने वाला Who gives life. भुवः (bhuvaḥ) = दुख़ों का नाश करने वाला Destroyer of sorrows. स्वः (suvaḥ) = सुख़ प्रदाण करने वाला who gives happiness. तत (tat) = वह that. सवितुर (savitur) = सूर्य की भांति उज्जवल Bright like the sun. Give us strength. Gayatri Mantra Benefits Gayatri Mantra has special recognition in Hindi religion. Chanting of Gayatri Mantra brings happiness in a person’s life and a person gets fame, wealth and a healthy body. It has also been proved by many kinds of research that the chanting of Gayatri Mantra also has many benefits such as mental peace, glow on the face, attainment of happiness, the betterment of senses, anger is reduced, intelligence increases and it is a batter way to do meditation.

“Oblations!” From the Maha Narayana Upanishad, the Exploration of the Mysteries of the Creator.
LXIX-2: O water, thou art the spread out seat of Anna-Brahman, the immortal food. Anna= Crops Brahman= Unconditioned Light.
In the Book of Genesis, God uses water, light, and the sky to vault creation and create a mirror:
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.”
7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
In Sanskrit we call these primordial elements of reflection, (mananam- to ponder the Self), bhuh (earth), svaha (light), and bhuvah (sky) respectively, “medium, mind and consciousness”.
Without these, God is indeed utterly formless and empty, submerged in darkness. Imagine being Him before He made us and you will understand just about everything He does.
God thinks, feels, works, plays, sorrows, and withstands. He is without sin, but like us He is deeply affected by it. He hungers to look upon a world without disaster, bullets, drama, dogma, and confusion over basic principals.
Like Him, I just don’t see myself living here like this. No one should. It’s not right for us or natural to us.
As to how to fix all this, the Upanishad has some very good and interesting suggestions, as you will see...like Eff You See Kay in the USA! But first, we need to get firm:
LXIX-3: Firm in my religious faith, I offer this oblation of ambrosia into Prana with reverence. O thou offered substance, be auspicious and get assimilated into me, so that I may not be consumed by hunger. Oblation to Prana.
Firm in my religious faith, I offer this oblation of ambrosia into Apana with reverence. O thou offered substance, be auspicious and get assimilated into me, so that I may not be consumed by hunger. Oblation to Apana.
Prana is the animating energy, the life-breath. Anything that circulates, air, water, blood, the wind, the sea and contributes to the autonomous functioning of life is called Prana. It is the Prana we want to discover when we meditate.
Successful meditation, AKA the willful end of all distraction, takes place when all that is left for the mind to take notice of is the pulse and respiration. There should be a profound state of perplexity as to what keeps them going on their own and why. This unanswerable question is the Prana.
Reverence and awe for the Prana is the seat of yoga and meditation, even on the mat. When we sit, we observe how Prana enlivens the mind. On the mat, we observe how the mind enlivens the body, how it is interacts with each bone and muscle group attached within it.
Just as the body has circulating fluids in it and all these attachments, so does the self integrate to the Self through the substance of the mind. The goal of all spirituality is recognition of this Yoke between God and His Human subjects. Once there is firm understanding, then and only then come the appetites and desires, which all possess of this there is no doubt.
You’ve heard of the Vanity Fair, where one can go shopping and get into all kinds of troubles. The Upanishad calls the Fair, apana or “the marketplace”, which consists of all the objects, experiences and persons we want to sample in order to satisfy the curiosities caused by our desires.
Rather than demonizing the market, the Upanishad says to it we must pay it oblation, that is, ask it for favors. What’s the goal? Ambrosia, to satisfy all those urges with bliss.
URGES include anything from the desire to pee to wrap your hands around your bosses neck and squeeze and squeeze and squeeze. Hunger, cold, heat, new shoes or underpants, new houses, new cars, new anything all of these are caused by the union of prana with the body. There is nothing we can do to stop them, only mitigate them with experience and self-control.
The first thing a good yogi learns after he discovers prana is how horny he is. Once a man becomes fertile, the desire for intercourse, like the Prana never really goes away or gives us peace.
No matter where we go- out for a pack of cigs, for more Gatorade, for work, popcorn or pizza, whatever makes us leave the house, we look at other people and wonder what it would be like, and so do they.
If we could get rid of two things- fear of the human body and fear of the Jew, life on earth could be so much fun. And more fun, it must be:
Firm in my religious faith, I offer this oblation of ambrosia into Vyana (intercourse) with reverence. O thou offered substance, be auspicious and get assimilated into me, so that I may not be consumed by hunger. Oblation to Vyana.
Firm in my religious faith, I offer this oblation of ambrosia into Udana (the tingling behind the navel) with reverence. O thou offered substance, be auspicious and get assimilated into me, so that I may not be consumed by hunger. Oblation to Udana.
Firm in my religious faith, I offer this oblation of ambrosia into Samana with reverence. O thou offered substance, be auspicious and get assimilated into me, so that I may not be consumed by hunger. Oblation to Samana.
By these oblations may my Self be united with the Supreme, so that I may attain Immortality.
The Upanishad says Intense suspicion of our natural desires causes deep-seated anxiety, even endangers our health. Upon activation during youth, we have to figure out how to be sexy and do it right. The secret to success is to listen to the body and it must also listen to you.
Even the Torah, long considered forbidding towards sex says whatever! so long as he is nice. So no more fucking around with assholes, guys, okay?!
Tumblr media
Lasting hunger for sex is not good, and must be periodically, but logically satisfied or God says life will not meet its own needs. It will fail to meet with itself:
X-4: O water, thou art the cover for Anna-Brahman, the immortal food.
From the pulse and the breathing, to the pulsing of the penis behind the belly button and everything in between for these things we praise God. *See my Camel Love Poem elsewhere in this forum.
**And he’s really not that nice. I can tell. It’s a gift.
