Alternative Sweetener Market Segmentation Analysis - by Type
Alternative Sweetener Market based on types can be further segmented into High Fructose Syrup, High-Intensity Sweeteners, Low-intensity Sweeteners and Others. The High-Intensity Sweeteners segment held a dominant Alternative Sweetener Market share in the year 2021. Food additives known as high-intensity sweeteners (HIS) are sugar substitutes that resemble the taste of sugar. These sweeteners have a calorie value ranging from 0 to 4 Kcal/gm and are used as flavor enhancers in food and beverage products. To address the need of health-conscious consumers, HIS is utilized as a diet sugar. Furthermore, after it is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, it can be utilized as a food additive (FDA). It can also be used commercially after receiving approval from the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) organization, which is particularly important in North America and Europe. For instance, Sweden would launch its new natural sweetener in October 2021, as part of its "high-intensity sweeteners" product portfolio. Small amounts of ultra-sweet taste protein were discovered in West African plants known as Oubli. Also, awareness & brand promotion by key manufacturers increase the Alternative Sweetener industry's strength in the forecast period. However, the High Fructose Syrup segment is expected to grow at the quickest rate between 2022 and 2027, with a CAGR of 5.9%, owing to its distinct taste. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a liquid sweetener made from a modified type of corn syrup that is utilized in the food and beverage industry as an alternative to sucrose. Wet milling is a method of producing high fructose corn syrup from corn. HFCS is more stable than granulated sucrose and works well in acidic beverages. It is also easier to carry, handle and mix attributed to its liquid property. The US Food and Drug Administration, on the other hand, has designated high fructose corn syrup as "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) (U.S. FDA). HFCS has been widely adopted by U.S. food manufacturers owing to its advantages over granulated sucralose. For instance, it is easy to supply and handle and has good stability. Such use of High Fructose Corn Syrup helps to boost the market of the Alternative Sweetener industry over the forecast period.

Alternative Sweetener Market Segmentation Analysis - by Geography
The Alternative Sweetener Market based on Geography can be further segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America and the Rest of the World. North America held a dominant Alternative Sweetener Market share of 36% in the year 2021. This is attributed to reasons like the presence of key market players and their product developments. Key manufacturers are promoting their products in innovative ways. Manus Bio, for example, launched the next generation "Natural Zero-Calorie Sweetener" in April 2021 in the United States under its iconic brand NutraSweet Naturals. To enjoy in everyday life, a plant-based sweetener with zero calories and 100% pure-tasting sweetness. The product has no aftertaste and can aid people who are trying to reduce weight quickly. Alternative Sweetener Market Drivers
The Rise in Health-Conscious Consumer is a Key Factor Driving the Market Growth.
The market for alternative sweeteners is expanding owing to an increase in health concerns, as well as an increase in the incidence of diabetes and obesity. Increased demand for low-calorie sweeteners and an increase in the obese population, particularly in emerging countries, are driving market expansion. In addition to monk fruit extract, users use stevia extract, a sweetener obtained from the leaves of the stevia bush. According to WHO 2020, there are 422 million people suffering from diabetics 2020 and 1.5 million deaths are attributed owing to diabetics. With such increasing diabetes prevalence, people prefer alternative sources of sweeteners to avoid health risks. Low-calorie sweeteners are preferred by diabetics and obese people owing to their having a lower sweetness quotient than sugar. During the projected period, the global alternative sweeteners market is expected to develop owing to an increase in demand for healthy and low-calorie foods and beverages.
Application of Alternative Sweeteners in Various Industries is Propelling the Market Growth.
Alternative Sweeteners are used in various industries like the food & beverage industry in various beverages, juice, jam, jelly, cream, bakery-confectionery, diary, frozen dessert & others; in pharmaceutical & nutraceuticals in for preparation of anti-biotic & cough syrup to hide odor and taste of active ingredients and other compounds in formulations; in animal feed to enhance taste and mask unwanted odor in pet food and others. In 2020, the United States consumed 14.7 million metric tonnes of sweetener ingredients. Such an increase in consumption propelled the Alternative Sweetener Market size growth in the forecast period.
Alternative Sweetener Market Challenges
The Overall Market Growth Has Been Hampered by Product Combinations that Equivocally Place Alternative Sweeteners Against Natural Sugars.
To combat sugar compositions, multiple components are required. As a result, holistic techniques to reduce sugar content while still harmonizing taste must be pursued. Formulators, for example, must combine stevia leaf extracts with erythritol to create sugar-free goods that fulfill consumer expectations. Sugar and artificial sweetener prices are 269.04 % more in 2022 than they were in 1977, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics (a $1.83 difference in value). Tate & Lyle will unveil new SWEETENER VANTAGE sweetener solutions design tools in July 2020 to assist formulators in creating sugar-free food and beverages using low-calorie sweeteners. Furthermore, a study has yielded a number of results that are further inhibiting market expansion. When taste receptors are exposed to other sweeteners or natural sugars, they react in the same way and the need can sometimes outweigh the health benefits. When we eat high-sugar foods, the brain sends out signals; however, there is no actual sugar in alternative sweeteners and the body creates insulin to offset the lack of a potential glucose molecule. As a result, the body begins to build insulin resistance over time. Finally, alternative sweeteners have been heavily processed with substances that can have negative health consequences. For example, intestinal health can deteriorate, resulting in obesity. Alternative sugar's negative health effects may stifle Alternative Sweetener Market size expansion over the projection period.

Rotten Apple
Ghost x fem!Reader (Canary) x Soap
A/N: This is set after the events in Bird Hunting, but is mostly centered around Canary (here [Name] due to her being in a civilian setting) and her parents. Just a lil' bit of lore for BH fans :)
Warnings: hurt/comfort, referenced past child neglect, narcissistic/abusive parents.
Summary: Sweetened apples turn sour when rotten apples are around.
Word count: 2100~
“...Yae think we should’ve brought a leash?” Johnny pondered, and Simon had no choice but to consider his opinion for the next time they went to the farmers’ market with [Name]. Only ten minutes had passed from the moment they arrived, and it only took her catching a whiff of sweetened apples for her to zoom away into the crowd.
And it was crowded today, with a congregation of people, alone, in couples, or entire families that had decided to brave the unusually sunny weather to stock up on organically harvested seasonal fruits and vegetables, animal products, and other produce made by the same people that sold them in cute little stands.
[Name] absolutely loved the farmers’ market - Simon wasn’t that keen on crowds, but both him and Johnny were easily swayed by her excitement. The initial plan was for them to stock up on groceries before spending a long-awaited long weekend at Johnny’s cabin in the north. But now she had disappeared to who-knows-where.
Her stealth had been an important skill during missions, but now it was a problem. Is this how their enemies felt, knowing that she was around there but being unable to find her?, Simon thought, his eyes scanning the crowd from above - luckily, there weren't many people even close to his size.
“There!” Johnny exclaimed, and took off in a random direction. Simon was hot behind his heels, refusing to lose another one of his partners today. Both men had to struggle to part the crows around them without shoving them aside, and not tripping into distracted kids that wandered around their parents.
Finally, Simon saw her, but there was something off about her. He couldn’t quite place it before Johnny got to her, his hand brushing her arm.
“[Na-]! Oh, sorry,” Johnny quickly retracted his hand with a sheepish grin, “I thought you were my girlfriend, you look a lot like her.”
The girl eyed him up and down and quirked an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed, “That’s the most awful pick-up line I’ve heard,” she sneered at him, and Johnny couldn’t help but notice that she really looked eerily similar to [Name], from the color of her hair, the shape of her lips, to the scrunch on her nose when she looked at him in displeasure. “And by the way,” she continued dismissively, crossing her arms over her chest, “I already have a fiance, and you can’t afford me anyway.”
Both Simon and Johnny blinked at the woman, who was looking at both of them up and down. Johnny was getting rightfully annoyed at her choice of tone, and was about to turn around when she saw the woman’s face shift into surprise as her eye caught something behind them. “...[Name]?”
[Name] had been about to grab Simon’s shoulder, excited to show him her newly purchased jars of jams while munching away at a caramel apple, but the moment she noticed who was speaking to them, she turned around and shifted through the crowds again.
Her heart was pounding in her ears and she felt her lungs constrict against her ribs for oxygen. The soles of her feet stung - although her burns were healed, the new skin was still sensitive. She had lost her treat somewhere, but she paid it no mind, eager to find the exit, and wait for Johnny and Simon by the truck.
However, and she should already know this by heart, Lady luck sometimes is a bitch.
“...[Name]? Is that you?” The voice made her freeze on the spot, right outside the parking lot, and she felt like a child all over again as she slowly turned around, her eyes meeting her mother’s.
“...Hi, mom,” she sighed dejectedly, resigning herself to her fate as she saw her father turn around to face her, regarding her with an unimpressed stare, “Hi, dad.”
“Haven’t seen you in years, darling,” the woman spoke sweetly and smiled politely, but it didn’t reach her eyes. It never does when it’s for me, [Name] thought bitterly. It was no different than when she spoke to a stranger at the grocery store, definitely not how one would speak to a daughter.
“Have you finally come to your senses?” her father was less subtle, crossing his arms over his chest, “Are you finally coming back home?”
“Ah, no, I’m actually on medical leave,” she cleared her throat and straightened her back, finally remembering she was not a teenager anymore, “I have my own place, had it for a while now, actually.”
“Really now?” her mother cooed, “When are you going to get the rest of your stuff from home, then?”
[Name] blinked at her, tilting her head a little in confusion, “you told me you were getting rid of my things years ago, you said you were going to use my bedroom for an office for Trish or something.”
“Oh, we did repurpose your old bedroom, silly girl,” the woman laughed, then shrugged condescendingly, “what we couldn’t give away is in a couple of small boxes in the attic, mostly your childhood photos.” [Name] said nothing - she had already expected her parents to get rid of all traces of her the moment she joined the military, she was only mildly puzzled about them keeping anything. “I'm sure you’ll want those, at least.”
“...You don’t want them?” she asked, although she already had an inkling of what the answer would be.
“Well, it would be embarrassing to have people asking about you, you know?” her mother sighed, shaking her head, “What would we tell them? It was easier to pretend your sister was an only child.”
“You could tell them the truth,” [Name] retorted, and her father seemed to tense up at her answer.
“Tell people that we have a daughter who whores herself out for a living?” He grumbled, while her mother looked around to see if anyone heard, “what do they call them, barrack bunnies?”
[Name] bit her lip, her mind unhelpfully replaying the disastrous argument that resulted from her enlisting years prior. “I thought you didn’t care if I died, anyway.”
“But you’re alive, and you owe us,” her mother chastised, her pitch dropping a few tones, “we raised you-”
“Grandma and Grandpa raised me, you were too busy raising Trish.”
“We kept you fed and clothed even though you always rebelled against us,” her mother hissed, stepping closer, “you turned our family against us!”
“You did that yourself,” [Name] kept her voice down, calm, knowing from experience that getting herself fired up would only give them more power, “you’re the one who started pretending I didn’t exist when I turned ten, saying you wished Trish was your only daughter.”
Her mother huffed and turned her face away indignantly, “and I stand by that.”
“...I know, you find it easier to pretend I don’t exist than to check whether I’m alive or not.”
“We should’ve left you at the hospital when we had the chance.”
[Name] rolled her eyes at that. After so many years living away from her parents, the usual quips and threats from her mother hurt less than when she was a teenager. It was a small comfort, to know that she’d grown out of her parents' shadow. “Yeah, that wasn’t very smart of you-” she was stopped by a sound slap, her face turning from the impact. She slowly raised her hand to cup her stinging cheek, and eyed her father, whose hand was still raised.
“You will not speak to your mother in that manner, young lady,” he growled, and [Name] just blinked at him, unsure of how to react without getting herself arrested.
“And you will not raise your hand against my corporal again, unless you’re ready to lose it,” Simon’s voice was low, dangerously low, and it sent shivers down both [Name]’s and her parents’ spines, although for entirely different reasons. She glanced over her shoulder, finding herself eye-level with Simon’s chest. Johnny stood by his side with a severe expression in his face, one she had seldom seen before.
Her parents warily stepped back, taking in the two large men who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. “W-who are you?” Her father stammered - although he would later deny he did.
“Lieutenant Riley, and this is your last warning,” he grumbled, although he didn’t need to do anything else to intimidate them. They already looked as if they were trying to find somewhere to hide.
Knowing that her parents were - for once - the ones cowering in fear stirred a newfound sense of power in [Name]’s heart - what was it that Gaz called it? Ah, yeah, scary dog privilege. She found it easier to look at the people in front of them and realize that nothing had tied her to them for a long time.
The branches of the genealogy tree can also be snipped to one’s content, her Grandma had told her on her twelfth birthday, when she couldn’t grasp the concept of her parents choosing to celebrate one kid’s birthday and not the other’s.
She had found herself being dropped off at her Grandparents’ early in the morning, while her parents boasted about taking Trish to an amusement park for the day. Little [Name] was heartbroken, and had begged her mom to forgive her for whatever she had done to not deserve a birthday party. But alas, they were relentless, and a lot of screaming from her mom and a backhanded slap from her dad had broken her pleas and made her silent, just like many other times.
At that time, [Name] couldn’t grasp the meaning of her Grandma’s words, but now that she had grown up, and disappointment had settled in a long time ago, those words rang truer than ever in her mind.
Even when she was on the brink of death in the forest, seeing them again never crossed her mind, for she knew they wouldn’t care even to visit her grave.
Keep up with that attitude, and you will die alone, because no one will ever love you, her mother had told her at thirteen, when she started openly questioning the difference in treatment with her twin.
How wrong she was, she thought. She was far from alone, and she was very well loved. Although her Grandparents were long gone, she had Simon and Johnny right here with her, and Gaz was her chosen brother, and Price was a better father figure than the man in front of her had ever been.
“Burn those photos, for all I care,” she smiled at her mother. It was a calm, detached smile - a polite smile you give to a stranger at the grocery store, not to a parent. “Make it real, that I do not exist for you.”
And with that she turned around, tugging on Simon's long sleeve as discreetly as she could. Johnny did notice, however, and smirked to himself as he followed after them - Simon would’ve gladly squared up to those two for hours if needed, but he easily relented to her touch.
Simon opened the truck’s passenger door for [Name] and she sat in silence, still mulling over her thoughts. A warm hand rested on her knee and she looked up to see her favorite pair of blue eyes staring back at her. They looked at each other in silence - there was an unsaid question in his lips, but she could almost taste it.
“...Let’s go home, okay?” She whispered, her hand stroking his knuckles. He simply nodded and shut the door before climbing in himself. Johnny was already sitting behind her, his lips pressed in a pout as he caught her reflection on the side view mirror, staring out of the window at the pair of strangers that once held her heart in their hands.
After a few silent moments as they pulled out of the parking lot, Johnny reached over, presenting [Name] with a fresh candy apple with sprinkles on top. She took it from his fingers, chuckling to herself at how easy it was for them to draw a smile from here, even though her heart still stung a little.
"Thanks, love," she hummed, pressing a kiss to his wrist and knowing that Johnny was grinning proudly to himself. Simon's hand was warm on her thigh, a welcome weight that grounded her in the present.
She could grow her own tree, if she so wanted, with the people she loved the most.
A/N: poor bby Canary deserved better parents :(

Relationship: f! reader x m! monster (Tabaxi)
[Also I am not familiar with tarot cards and palm readings so I did some research on it and hope it makes some sense.]
-
“Tarot and dreams are two dialects in the language of the soul.”
― Philippe St Genoux
-
The days were hot, days longer and lives lived longer.
Though even with the heat that swelled and radiated through the city of sand, it was known that fortune came to those who sought it.
With destiny that you thought a 'trial' awaited, you needed answers. Needed answers that would fall on false hopes and dreams; for it all to be wafted lies that anyone would have to pay double in seeking.
You did not pay for it luckily, with your parents and their pleas for you to seek 'professional help' in your dilemma, you found it in the eyes of fates, fates that lay within the flick of a card.
Adar was his name. Adar the Sahir. Adar the Seer of Fates. Yet, you had to be the judge of that.
You found his spot in the market easily: situated between the two stone walls of other buildings, his was smaller and made from sticks and heavy cloths, telling you it had been put up with haste and less in need of protection against the elements.
Off to a good start, in thinking this person and their job was real. You sulked, making your way over, ignoring the staring, and the whisperings that came from drawing your name. Many thought of you as odd, leaving you to yourself as they whispered and mocked.
When you stood a few inches from their open entrance, you gave a harsh knock to the wooden panel holding the structure together, and popping their head out was the one you sought that was known as Adar.
The palm reader was that of a Tabaxi, and though you had seen few of them in your lifetime, you had been familiar with them roaming the lands, tending to keep to warmer temperatures, though some preferred the cold.
You were familiar that many were different from one another: ones with dark fur, light fur, ones big and small, stripped or with spots. Though you had never seen one like himself. He looked like a caracal: small and lithe, standing almost an inch taller than you. He's dressed in cooling clothing: an open white blouse, with tailored purple and bold trousers, his long legs wrapped in dark linen that acted as 'shoes' to protect the soles of his paws from the heated cobbles and boiling sands.
"You must be my new customer? I am Adar, a palm and tarot card reader. You are familiar with my work?" You liked his voice immediately: velvety and pleasantly soft, mixed with a sweetened accent.
"That is correct, yes." You awkwardly spoke, he was charming, and the way he looked at you so kindly made your stomach flutter.
"Come, come, you are welcomed inside." You're shuffled inside the small hut with sweeping rugs and colour cloth that was as bright as him and his clothing. When he passed by you, you got a hint of jasmine and plum, a scent sweet that surprised you yet suited him well.
You entered his small hut, a richness of Sandalwood and Patchouli filled your nostrils, candles lit in the unlit room as you followed the Tabaxi to the table in the middle of the room. It was instead an eyesore, an controlled mess. Cards filled the table with crystals of all sorts of colours, mainly amethysts were scattered across his table of all shapes and sizes.
"Excuse the mess," Adar spoke cheerfully, "I need rearranging."
"It is quite alight. My ma is always telling me I must tidy after myself."
"You live with your parents, correct?" He shuffled around the table to sit, you following in the chair opposite him, nearly being engulfed by the plush cushions. "It is not a judgmental question," he eased, "it helps me to know you better and with the cards."
"Ah," you awkwardly laughed, trying to get comfortable. Maybe it was the ease of him, his aura, but you grew a bit more and more comforted. "Forgive me, I've never done this before."
"That is quite alright," Adar reassured smoothly, and your stomach twisted with glee. "I will go through everything with you, and what everything means." Your eyes lit up as you watched him smoothly stack the tarot cards, shuffling them as if they were nothing but leaves and he was the wind, guiding them with a sound that was a delight to anyone's ears.
"These are tarot cards, all different but will tell of your story and what will come. Look at them, and pick which ones look like they call to you. Pick three, and I shall go through them one at a time."
Seems easy enough. You thought, heart racing. They were just cards, it couldn't have been that hard. You eyed the cards, all facing down, and you carefully picked out the three. With a flick of his wrist, Adar swiped the deck away with a smooth motion, the deck stacked once again and neatly placed on the side of the table.
"The first card represents what you can do to surrender to the change in your life." He flipped the first card over, revealing the plain picture of a horned monster, sitting on a throne, above two naked and chained individuals. "The Devil is upright, which can mean shadow self, attachment, addiction or restriction."
It could mean a few things: how the way you had been completely controlled your entire life, dictated by your parents to suit their needs and please them. The ever-dutiful daughter, silent and obedient.
You didn't dare say what you had thought to the Tabaxi, instead, nodding along as the next card was flipped.
"The second card offers direction on caring for yourself during this process." It was a depiction of a knight on a pale horse, offering aid to a kneeling and begging priest, surrounded by others either begging or lying dead.
"Death." You read aloud from the card, but Adar was quick to interject. "It is not foreshadowing your demise," he laughed comfortingly. "The card can mean endings, change, transformation and change."
Oh, that seemed better than it threatening my death. You thought dryly. "So, death is giving advice?"
"Exactly." Adar grinned a toothy smile, before flipping the final card over. "This final card serves as a guide for centring yourself amid this change."
Two individuals, naked as the day they were born, in a loving embrace.
"The lovers can represent love, harmony, friendship, values, alignment and choices." He spoke before looking over to you. "Perhaps there is someone in your life you can look to for help in a situation that is troubling you."
"Perhaps," you thought, fully knowing there were only a handful of friends you could rely on, but they were rarely sighted in your hometown, instead, venturing off to seek a new life elsewhere. "There may be someone."
Adar smiled as he removed the cards away to stack with the remaining deck. "These are just speculations. I do not truly know the inner conflict that goes on inside my customers, so these cards should be of help."
You nodded, believing there was some aspect to it you could understand a bit better. "What about palm readings?"
Adar's eyes lit up with glee at the mention, "Ah, I'm glad you asked, it is after all included in my session with you today!"
After moving around things on his table, he placed his hands stretched, the claws in his paws had been retracted and not showing out. "Again, I will go through the process of how this works."
You shakily placed your left hand in his, aware that you had been sweating profusely when you were about to touch a handsome stranger, your body rigid as he took your hand into him to 'inspect'.
"You have very soft hands," he laughed to ease the tension.
"Thanks, you too." His paws were soft and warm, a contrast to the hands of humans when the fur on him was soft and short. "So how do palm readings work?"
Adar smiled at this as if the topic was a lifetime hobby of his joy from a youngling. "Think of your hands as portals- shedding invaluable insight. It is the art of analysing the physical features of the hands to interpret personality, and characteristics and to predict future happenings."
He inspected your palm closely, and you had to ignore the way it felt so comforting to hold his hand. "Your sun sign is fire, but the shape of your hand is that of an air sign." He spoke after some silence.
"And that means?"
"It means that you have a lack of nuanced insight into the complexities of your personality. You can be easily distracted, anxious or on edge."
He pressed into the bottom part of the palm below your pinky, "This mount of Luna reveals an individual's empathy, compassion, and imagination. And here," he points to the base of your middle finger. "The mount of Saturn reveals you have a hidden yet deep understanding of the ups and downs to life, hidden wisdom some would say."
"Some hidden wisdom, huh? Couldn't say I've heard that before." Your cheeks rouged.
"Meanwhile, your lifeline-"
"It doesn't determine how long of a life I live, does it?" You laughed nervously.
He smiled easily, "No, it doesn't." He squeezed your hand teasingly. "It reveals your experience, vitality and zest. Your line isn't deep, meaning you there is not have much experience. Your line is long, however, meaning you have had much influence and little independence."
How interesting. For not believing in any such thing, the cards and readings did an exceptionally good job in your predicament. It was as if Adar had been there for every aspect of your life, chipping away at your shell to find the crux of your issues.
"I hope this gave you some more insight. Is there anything else you wish to ask me before our session ends?"
"Yes, I do actually, just one thing." You braced yourself for the rejection, the hopes and dreams to be crushed. "Have you ever dealt with anything to do with curses? Or even if the cards could solve them?"
"Curses?" He queried.
Nerves wracked through you as you told him. "I've been told all my life one thing: make my family proud, and not in education but in marriage. I had to find a cordial spouse who had strong blood and good fortune. I had to be compliant, dutiful and quiet, yet the older I got, the more I was told how... undesirable I was becoming. How no husband would want me."
"And who told you this?" His long ears twitched.
"My pa."
His eyes locked onto yours, and it had felt as if he stared not into your eyes, but through the window into your soul. It was uneasy, and jarring to stare back, uncertain of what he saw staring back at him. The silence was palpable, before Adar gave a long hum, releasing your hand as he stated. "Well, there's nothing wrong with you. You're perfectly fine, not cursed I may add."
"Are you certain? I've been told this my whole life. The readings could not be picking this up."
"The cards and readings never lie, sweet thing, and nor do I." His smile was lopsided. "Maybe listening to the wise words of your pa aren't something you should consider."
You could've laughed, could've thought that all of the nineteen years of living had come to being told it was all a lie. That being told a horrible thing would stick with you for the rest of your days: a challenge to your approach to living when it had all been for intimidation.
"So, I've never been cursed?"
"Never before and never have." Adar gave a sympathetic smile. "If what you're going through has been any foresight into the cards-"
"They have, to some degree," I answered. "I want to be independent of my family, but I fear I will never be able to."
"Breaking a harsh cycle is a lot for anyone," spoke the Tabaxi softly. "But if you need anyone to talk to, you know I would be there in a heartbeat."
Your cheeks rouged, words jumbling in your throat. "Is... would I need to book another session?"
His laugh was a sweet thing: a melody so fine. "No, not for me, sweet thing. Free of charge if you wish to have someone to chat with outside of my work."
"Then, I shall be seeing you again, correct?"
"Of course."

Hello everyone, today i bring you:
Things Americans don't realize they have the shittiest version of
or
Things the Swiss Do Better
At the top of the list, brought to you straight from the bath,
Bathtubs
Are you a full sized adult who longs for the days of childhood when they could lie down in a bathtub and get fully submerged? Do you wish you could stretch your legs out instead of bending them in half and neglecting your ever-coldening knees?
The solution is easy! Go literally anywhere else!
Okay I admit I have actually no idea how most other countries do this; I'm in Switzerland right now staying with my partner. The tubs here are huge. Upon describing the ones I'm used to, my partner was absolutely horrified, so I have to assume this is the norm, because it seems much more likely that most places in the world make adult sized tubs than sad little baby sized ones like the US.
This thing is like 20ish inches deep. When I put my elbow to the bottom, my fingertips are only about an inch higher than the edge. I'm 5'7 and can stretch my full height, the top of my head only sticking a few inches above the edge on the sloped end. This thing makes me feel so short. I'm 250lbs and can rotate fully. None of my torso touches the sides unless you count my upper arms, which don't if I pull them tighter against me. I haven't had a bath like this since I was 6.
Yogurt
I spent my entire life thinking I hated yogurt. It turns out yogurt is actually delicious! ... If it's not American. That sad, overly sweetened, gelatinous, low fat nonsense we've been eating is an affront to good yogurt everywhere (but especially in Switzerland.)
Decent yogurt... It tastes less sugary, yet sweeter - the difference between a gas station donut and a piece of fruit you just picked off a tree. Don't get me wrong, I love a good gas station donut... Just not as much as literally anything here.
I was excited to share American donuts with my partner since donuts here suck, but the problem is that, while US donuts are better than any donut here, they are significantly worse than literally any other dessert here. I got here/brought them two weeks before Christmas. Sadly, they ended up getting composted. There was simply too much better shit to eat.
I digress. The yogurt has a natural sweetness, it's not as thick, which you might think is a bad thing until you realize that the thickness of American yogurt is almost definitely achieved with some kind of thickening agent to make up for the complete lack of creaminess. The yogurt here is thinner but more creamy. It's so nice that I've gone from adamant yogurt hater to eating one all but two mornings since I've gotten here.
Toilet paper
Okay this is a weird one and, again, I admit it could just be a gap in my experience, bit I have lived on the west coast, in the midwest, and in the south of the US, with many different people with many different preferences and I have yet to find toilet paper like this.
The toilet paper here does not have squares. The squares are elongated (rectangles). It's like two ply and it's not soft, but it is thick and firm. The US toilet paper market is so good about pushing a narrative about toilet paper needing to be soft to spare your asshole that we have completely fallen for a scheme that ensures we must use more toilet paper and end up less clean in the end.
Soft, thick toilet paper may feel nicer but you end up having to wipe more because it's never as good at staying together as they claim it is. They can do as many 'drag tests' as they want to show how it stays together, but a flat surface and a hairy ass are not the same thing. Anyway tmi but I use like half as much toilet paper now and never have anything getting left behind.
Doorknobs (THEY DON'T HAVE THEM)
That is to say, doors have handles here. Those round fuckers you twist are nowhere in sight. You might think this is a minute difference that isn't important but you would be wrong. Hands full? Just lean your elbow on the handle. Bam, door is open. Knobs might have been a stylistic marvel in the design world at some point but, practically, they're a fucking nightmare.
Chocolate
Okay I know you've heard this one before but it's usually Europeans scoffing at American chocolate so I'm giving you the American take which is that they're completely right to be scoffing at American chocolate.
I brought a bunch of expensive-ish, Dove mint chocolates with me to share with my partner. The fact aside that he doesn't like mint chocolate apparently, I ate one a couple weeks after getting here(I didn't before then because I was too busy horfing down Swiss chocolates) and it was like their goodness had just fucking disintegrated. I was so disappointed. I had been shoveling these in just weeks before coming here because they were impossibly good and so smooth and luxurious and now I have this big fucking canister of disappointment chocolate. It's not bad... But considering this is some of the better mainstream chocolate in America, that's a devastating downgrade in status.
Ferrero Rocher is extremely common here (it's Italian in origin, just south of Switzerland). I keep feeling like I'm the only one eating it and I finally asked my partner if anyone else is going to eat it because I don't want to eat all the fancy chocolates and he said, "It's not really exciting to us."
Hello??? This is the fanciest of mainstream chocolate in the US!!
The same goes for Lindt Lindor truffles, which are Swiss. They're so accessible here they're not even fancy, they're just average chocolates.
Don't even get me fucking started on the chocolate from the confectionary that we bought when I first got here. We got about eight pieces of different flavors and have only just finished them because each time we had some, we each had one piece. They were so fucking divine that I couldn't eat the rest in one sitting because I was too busy ascending to another plane of existence. Don't get me wrong, we took our time because they're really expensive, but I'm telling you that was okay. One of them was so good that it completely satisfied my desire for chocolate. That's how insanely powerful these chocolates are.
Conclusion
All of the things I hated about America, while in America, have become just kind of baffling to think back on since coming here. Like, how is the US even like this? How is it that bad? It has its merits, but mainly in character and culture, not in quality of life. Anyway, of you ever have the sliver of a chance to go to Europe, absolutely do it, even if its just to visit. I haven't been this happy in my life. Yeah that's largely because I'm finally here with the love of my life after five years of online-only, but a not insignificant chunk is also the quality of life. I've been poor and/or just skirting homelessness for the last 7 years, so this is like whiplash. Anyway I just wanted to share these things. Mainly the tub and yogurt, those are just mind-blowing. I hope it was all a bit interesting to read.

Send in the Clones
Tumblr media
One of my fascinations is Barbie clones, as what's cloned for the dollar stores tells us a lot about what's really popular in fashion dolls. For instance, back around 2014, Family Dollar and Dollar General were loaded with Monster High clones of quality ranging from "incredibly cute" to "you must be kidding me." Today in 2023, you'd barely guess MH had existed: not a weird vampire-werewolf hybrid with scanty rooting to be seen!
While trying to find a good Asian market in the next big town north (because I was craving more of the puku puku tai I got in Little Tokyo), we stumbled into, and through, the 99 Cents Only rebrand called The 99 Cent Store.
The store had a decent-sized doll section, including our friend Sofi, above. She stands out among clones because her outfit doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. It's a pretty impressive ball gown by clone standards, with even long gloves! And then... mob cap. Why? Is she hoping to be whisked back to the 18th century, a la Dark Shadows?
Sofi has a more modern and stylish counterpart, Sofia. (None of these brands means anything much. They are slapped on a box at a factor in Chengdu. The girls likely have the identical Chengdu body, and I didn't buy any to double check.)
Tumblr media
Sofia's clothes are surprisingly complex, especially that pink outfit with an actual chain belt. If I were still doing body transplants, the brunette would be tempting, as that's one of my favorite clone faces.
A typical clone goes more for the "Barbie shows the ravages of drug abuse" look seen here.
Tumblr media
I'll admit, I'm weirdly fascinated by the red braids: that's more creativity than the cheapest clones used to have. (The rooting will be horrible, though.) Having actual belts (or heck, even fake belts) on the outfits is surprisingly posh.
Sofia has a rival, Davina, who likes her glitz.
Tumblr media
Davina has arms so skinny that she can't lift her own heavy sequined dresses, but terrific eyeliner and another face-up that's growing on me. Presumably she's paying for those party togs in her day job as a doctor.
Tumblr media
Finally, I thought this was a clone, and it sort of is, but it's from a known name manufacturer. Meet "Spring Break" Raynea from Mermaid High, by Spin Master (who briefly, circa 2011, brought the world Liv dolls, still among my faves).
Tumblr media
This here is what would have happened if MGA, for their Bratz revival circa 2016, had gone for the X High trend and the mermaid craze all at once, instead of whatever that thing was that they did. While these girls participate in the "sweetening and softening" aspect of modern fashion dolls, they still look like they'd be a bad influence, which was part of the charm of original Bratz.
Had I realized these gals had articulated elbows and knees, I would have been seriously tempted, because they're pretty cute and such a brilliantly absurd marketing ploy.
I am such a sucker for a bad idea.

Touhou Ship Week Day 2: Sweet/Pride (yep, did both)
“Really? That’s what you’re most proud of?”
It wasn’t often that Minoriko Aki had visitors over to her home. It was a rather ramshackle place built on a field fairly recently, basically just had the basics for herself and her sister Shizuha, plus maybe one guest if they didn’t mind the small size. But, well, this wasn’t any other visitor. This was a rather cute maneki-neko that she’d recently hired to help with her sales, but… well, something just clicked. Maybe it was her savvy, their shared taste in warm colors, or maybe she was just pretty. But after a few days of working together, the pair couldn’t bear to keep their partnership strictly professional.
Of course, that didn’t mean they had to agree on everything.
“Yep. Once you see how much money I’ve been making from that card trade, you’d get it too.”
“Really, money of all things.” Minoriko rolled her eyes as she worked on baking something. “No wonder you call yourself a cat-pitalist. It’s always money with you.”
“Hey, I started from nothing, lived my life and eventually got to become something. It just so happens that money’s involved in it! And besides, don’t act like you weren’t also getting in on that card trade.”
“H-hey, I just… wanted to use it as an excuse to sell more sweet potatoes, okay?”
“Right, right.” Mike smiled as she moved to sit down. “But anyway, what are you proudest of?”
“Me? I can think of a few things.” Minoriko got to thinking as she placed the results of her work in a wood oven. “I’m proud of the work I do for the autumn season. As a deity of the harvest, I’m proud to be able to work with the few villagers who do worship me, to be able to grant them bountiful crops every year. Though…”
“Though… what?”
Minoriko stepped away from the oven and smiled. She moved to sit next to Mike and scratched behind the cat girl’s ears, prompting a murring noise from the latter.
“What I think I’m most proud of is my cooking. You’ve had my sweet potatoes and such, but I’d like to think I’m talented enough to be able to handle even non-autumn dishes perfectly.”
“Your cooking, huh?” Mike glanced over at the oven. “Well, we’re about to see how justified that pride of yours is, huh?”
“Don’t give me that competitive tone, we both know how you feel about my cooking. You know what they say,” Minoriko said as she held up a finger. “The best way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach.”
“Hah… haha… right.”
Mike blushed and went silent. Now it was just time to wait for this thing to finish baking. Using this silence as an opportunity, Minoriko stood back up and walked over to a small box on the floor. Inside the box was ice, and a lot of it, but more interestingly was a small container sitting on top of it. Reaching down, the goddess picked it up and set it atop a table, before opening it. Inside was something akin to cream, though it was lighter, almost airy.
“What’s that you got there?” Mike asked with visible intrigue.
“I just took some heavy cream and very quickly mixed it. It’s something that Western maid taught me about when I visited last autumn. Same with this dessert I’m about to give you. I sweetened it too to make it a bit more flavorful, I’m sure it’ll go great with it.”
“We’ll see about that.”
There Mike was with the teasing. That was the one annoying thing about her, she just kind of always insisted on being right. Maybe that card market was starting to give her a swelled head after all, but now probably wasn’t the time for that conversation. Now was the time to wait for food. So back and forth Minoriko would go, switching from checking on the oven to scratching Mike’s ears, on and off until…
“Aha, it looks done to me.”
Minoriko put on some mitts and slid the finished dessert out of the oven. The result was something resembling a bowl of an orange-ish custard, except between the custard and the bowl was a layer of browned pastry. Mike clearly didn’t recognize it.
“What’s that?”
“The person who told me about this called it ‘pumpkin pie’. Apparently it’s a popular dessert in the Outside World during the autumn months. The filling’s based on a type of squash you’d see out there too, I’ve started growing them as of last year as a matter of fact. Never hurts to expand your culinary tastes.”
“I guess so.”
Minoriko nodded and moved to cut out a slice from the pie. As she did so, she glanced down at Mike.
“So, just to be totally clear. Are you proud of the money you’ve earned, or, uh, or the work you put in to get there? Because if it’s the latter, you sure fixated on the former a lot.”
“Well, I’m… I’m… huh.” That seemed to catch Mike off guard. The maneki-neko leaned forward, hands on her face, and paused. “You know, when you put it like that, I’m… actually not sure?” I feel like… huh. Are my words and my thoughts just completely mismatched? I feel like…”
“Go ahead, think it over. I’ll give you time.”
The next minute or so was mostly quiet outside of a few grunts from Mike, as if they were the sound of the wheels turning in her head. Eventually, there was a nod.
“I think I was thinking of the latter. I’m proud of the work and the results of said work, not just the money itself.”
“Alright, alright. Thank you for the clarification, that’s a lot more understandable. Now, please try this.”
Minoriko finished slicing up the pie and placed one onto a plate. She dabbed some of the whipped cream on top and passed it off to Mike with some silverware; she was gifted some and found it was helpful for some of the more out-there foods she tried making, this being an example. She cut some for herself as well and moved to sit back down with her partner.
“Don’t have to wait for me to start,” Mike commented, “you can go ahead and eat.”
“Well gee, thanks.”
The pair both dug in at the same time, each taking a fairly small bite at first. The room fell silent with their chewing, neither knowing how the other would react. It wasn’t until Minoriko caught a small, rumbling noise coming from next to her that she had an idea of what her partner felt.
“Hey, are you… are you purring?”
“W-what? What? It’s good!” Mike leaned back and gave Minoriko the absolute most sheepish look the god could imagine; it even made said god chuckle. “It’s sweet, but it’s not super, uh, sugary. It’s one of the best desserts I ever had. I think the only thing that may beat it is your sweet potato stuff.”
“Oh, it’s that good? Thank you, I’m glad it’s up to par.” Minoriko finished her first bite and smiled, before taking another. “I wondered if I had the spices messed up, but no, it’s exactly how I wanted it.”
The couple would work on finishing their pie slices, not even bothering to take it slow given that they had another several slices for later. No time to savor the flavor when the flavor was that savor-able as it stood. Eventually they finished, leaving empty plates in front of them and their stomachs full. The pair sighed and leaned back, before Mike eventually spoke up.
“...y’know what, Minoriko?”
“Hmm?”
“...you know, I’d be way prouder of this if it were my talent.”
“Ah, don’t let yourself down. You’re a hard worker, Mike, you deserve credit there.”
“...yeah, you’re right.”
Minoriko got up to cover the pie and put it in the ice box, before moving back to sit near Mike and return to petting her. That conversation certainly ended better than expected, and they both felt remarkably cozy afterward. Sheesh, the deity thought, if only every conversation ended like that.
